As a British enthusiast who has had the pleasure of travelling Europe after hyperia was my first big coaster, I can confidently say that whilst hyperia definitely is one of the most unique and interesting rides in the world, it does not and can not stack up to rides like Voltron, Hyperion or even something as seemingly inferior as lech coaster. I can confidently say it's the ride the UK needed and I hope it brings a new coaster war to our small island, but it absolutely is not the world beating coaster so many people, most of whom who haven't ridden it, claim it to be. Finally rode Hyperia for the first time yesterday. I absolutely love the theme music and I think the first drop, outerbanked airtime hill and stall dive loop are all world class elements and feel like nothing else in this country. Plus, the speed you build up and then take those elements with is just completely nuts. Until I can get myself back over to the states and over to greater Europe to try all the new rides there and my old favourites, Hyperia now sits as my number one, as, as far as I’m concerned, it’s nothing like anything else I’ve ever experienced on the planet. Yesterday managed to ride it on the front twice and then the other rides were also near the front. 3 rides on the rattle train and one on the one that isn’t rattling and I actually think the rattle is even worse than people say it is. It was very uncomfortable in those valleys and hopefully in the planned maintenance next week, they sort it out, because it’s only going to get worse. The themeing is also disappointing and definitely half baked. If it could’ve been even nearly as good as something like Nemesis Reborn I think it would’ve elevated the coaster even higher. I also don’t like the trims on the splashdown. I get why they’re there but they really take the speed out of you and they’re actually a little uncomfortable in my opinion. It would be more forgivable I think if there were a few more elements after the trims, but, I don’t actually have a problem with the coaster’s length. I think it takes 5 really solid and unique (unique at least for the UK) elements and executes them really damn well. Could they have been better, yes, but I still think they’ve done them really well. The speed each element is taken with and the complete lack of dead space or throw away elements makes it feel like every moment on the coaster counts and every moment your body is going through something weird. I think if it was longer it potentially could’ve added to the experience, but too much would’ve killed that relentless pacing and any potentially throwaway elements like a helix I feel would’ve detracted because it would feel out of place. It’s currently my number 1 (for now) because the rides I had yesterday, especially the last one on the front row of the smooth train were just exceptional and I’m obsessed with that stall and first drop. It absolutely could be better and I’m a little disappointed in areas, but most of those things like the broken splashdown, lack of theming and rattle train can be fixed. You have to consider that for british ppl, this is a huge scaled coaster. Its faster and higher then the average coasters in the uk. Most coasters are short in the uk, so they are used to it. And for what it is, it is enough for the brits. For us coaster enthusiasts out there and from other countrys, we are used to bigger scaled coasters, more intense one and better themed one. The most intense cossters, beside this one, are nemesis, smiler, stealth and maybe saw and oblivion. You cant really compare these coaster with hyperia. Look I’m sorry we don’t have a whole 50-states worth of space to build a long-ass hyper coaster, okay? 😭 Just let us have this one. This thing in the back row is better than Shambhala, arguably the best B&M hyper. I will take it all day long and I will love it until the day I die. I’m so grateful this ride exists.
If the elements were insane, I’d have no problems with its length. There are plenty of short rides that make the best out of their short length, but imo Hyperia isn’t one of them
I rode it twice yesterday, I don't think it's overrated at all. It's a great ride. Amazing first drop and elements. Like the outer bank into the inversion. Loved it.
I've ridden it in both trains, every row, every seat multiple times and its safe to say its an elite coaster for me and makes my top 5. And sure some of that is bias as I still can't get over the fact theres a Mack hyper coaster at a day tripable park, each element really hits the spot for me besides the last little airtime hill (still decent though) but the waveturn just before is excellent. It's my UK #1 and definitely offers something different than any other UK coaster, it's ashame that it was around 3 to 4 million pounds from being worthy to be considered the best in the world but it's Merlin after all.
I feel it’s a lot easier to love the coasters in the UK when you live here. I doubt I’d be as attached to any of the rides here if I hadn’t grown up with them and if they weren’t often my only option when it comes to thrill rides to be honest. Pretty excited to have Hyperia which actually lives up to all of the incredible coasters I’ve rode in the states.
I totally agree with your points. Hyperia is unnecessarily short and it is rattly and was a bit underwhelming. It's not even my favourite in the UK but it still is a great coaster.
It does feel like the majority of people who have ridden Hyperia loved it, and you are right in saying that you're an outlier for saying it's not as good as people say, but I get where you're coming from. That being said, for us UK enthusiasts, getting a coaster of this magnitude is very rare, so when it does come around, we are going to hype it up to the maximum. So it was inevitable that some people were going to come off underwhelmed. I think those 4 big elements it has are really good, but then it just ends. With an actual second half and better theming/landscaping, I really think it could have been a top 10 roller coaster in the world. And that's a shame because like I said, it will be a while until we get another coaster as good as this one.
Loved this video. I think it excellently summarises everything that's wrong with Hyperia despite seemingly being a great ride. I still can't wait to go back to Thorpe to ride this thing, even if I knew it wasn't gonna be all that since it started construction 😂
It is a very good coaster for the length of ride time it has. It should have been longer and the trim was poorly thought out. The outer bank is a quality element, something different but it is much better at the front then back but then you have a weaker first drop at the front. It is sad that we had to wait 30 years to get something to top nemesis. We are so restricted in this country because of the whingeing, complaining populace on the whole. Just look at who we vote for. Oh, I am complaining 😂
The reason uk people love hyperia like me is because it’s the best in the uk. But the thing is, all other uk coasters are SO MID. I absolutely love hyperia but I still think Thorpe park should have made it longer. We will need to wait another 10 years for it to be topped so they have kind of not made the most of the incredible opportunity. To potentially make one of the best coasters in the world. Edit: I am English if you can’t tell
@@FastFox1 I just can’t see what makes it the best ride in the uk. It’s tall and has one unique element, the out bank turn, Other than that it’s nothing special. Plus the theming, which plays a big part of making a ride special is poor.
@@gumpy4960 last thing I thought I was gonna hate it but I loved it it’s prolly just coz I like those sort of elements to a coaster: big fast airtime and speed and intensity even thought it isn’t that intense
best ride for me but i havent gotten outside the uk. however its not overrated. it is insane especially that drop but i need to get to some euro parks. def a no1 uk coaster and it has a potential to be top 10 in europe. thats my take
I havent ridden it yet. Its a 5 hour drive for us & up until recently the thing spent more time broken down than open. As a big mainline European coaster fan... Sigh... I hope youre wrong 😢
My first reaction when I saw a POV of Hyperia was: "Wow! I would feel robbed coming off that short ride!". But then people keep saying that the elements make up for it. Let's just say it's not on top of my bucketlist.
i absolutely agree with everything said especially since im one of those people you mentioned at 6:26 lol. only thing id say tho is the outerbank turnaround thing is significantly better in the front row as you get proper ejector going up into it which is then sustained all the way through and down through the roll (i was lucky enough to experience it on the front row with a friend using single rider) so if u had managed to get a front row ride i think you probably wouldve had a different opinion on that element. but yeah it 100% only gives floater in the back rows and then some nice pull down thru the roll. also about the rattle, it seems to be one of the 2 trains that is particularly worse for some reason as well as it being worse on both trains in the middle rows. the front and back rows on both trains are pretty much perfectly smooth. i had 2 rides on it that were quite bad in terms of the rattle, one of which was really quite awful because of it and i had to p much brace myself in every valley bc my back was having non of it but the other 3 rides on it were perfectly fine. and tbh it is quite concerning especially as its a brand new coaster and i rode it after it had only been open to the public for about 4 weeks in total so i just worry about what its going to ride like in 10 or 20 years time
I don’t understand the rattle complaint. Like yeah it is there, but that’s it. It’s not like you get headbanging or anything it just exists. I get it shouldn’t be there but it doesn’t detract from the ride experience at all
i mostly agree with you on this however one of my rides was absolutely awful and insanely uncomfortable because of it so i guess i just got unlucky since all of my other rides on it were fine
Im a proud british man and i absolutely love hyperia, i do agree that its not in the conversation as regards to being the best in the world, however it is the best in the UK and us brits definitely should be proud of it. It really has upped the level for coasters in the uk
Road it yesterday with 5 friends/family. The whole trip to the park was planned around riding hyperia and all of us were left feeling disappointed. Just didn’t hit like we hoped it would and we all individually preferred other rides at the park. After visiting magic mountain in Cali last year you realise how shortchanged us Brits are for world class coasters. A wasted opportunity imo.
It’s the best roller coaster I’ve ever ridden. In 6 months time I’m going to ride Iron Gwazi, Mako, Manta and Montu. I imagine all of these will place higher on my personal rankings.

Great video as always Mr John Critic. Going to thorpe for the first time next year, so I'll finally have a chance to ride it. My expectations for it have never been nearly as high as the rest of the community's, probably because of the shit state that video games have been in making me a bit more cynical, but I'm still excited (and its still probably gonna be my #1 either way), but my expectations are low enough as to where they can probably be exceeded. I shall return in like 9 months or whenever it is I go
I waited 2 hours for this ride, and my first thought at the end was "that was it"? I think because I'd seen so much hype over it in the last few months I thought it'd be a bit better. It's a good coaster but still doesn't beat Voltron or even Nemesis for me. Nothing gave me that 'wow' factor except maybe the valley after the first drop which hurt my back slightly. Wait sorry that's 'ow' factor. In all seriousness though I did enjoy it, just was disappointed by it's length and lack of more elements.
@@Coaster_Critic ok I was overreacting about the narcissistic part, but I absolutely see how much bias you have for the ride mostly because it’s popular
its still my No1 hopefully come a retrack which might come sooner than expected it'll get its actual second half + unload station + 3 trains+ extra theming maybe i should set up a go fund me lol
It doesnt have to do with mack. They made the best out of thorpe parks budget. Look just at voltron. Its a freaking intense coaster from start to finish. Its even so intense, that the turn table section is a welcomed break. Last year i wrote Dc Rival on my aussie trip and i was surprised how good this mack hyper is. And Hyperia isnt bad or a slow burner. Its actually pretty forcefull in some sections.
I've done hyperia and it didnt disappoint for me, i feel like it packed enough of a punch to justify the length of the ride. but there is definitely a rattle pacifically on train 2. the first train is glass smooth :). It would be amazing if it was longer and maybe a top worthy coaster but im personally fine with this, as I still think its the best in the uk by far.
Agree with the general thought that’s it’s great but not truly elite (Thorpe Park is my home park). Back is best for drop but there’s much more airtime at the front in the other elements. It’s too short and I don’t even consider the hill after the trims to be an element, just part of the brakes. The splashdown when it was working was hilarious - you can’t see it from the paths/queues and it was out of sync. The theming is not great and the ride actually faces the wrong way for views for most of the elements imo. I did get a rattle in the middle but not at the front or back so disagree with that. Just feels like a rushed hyper coaster done on the cheap. Still prefer Nemesis Reborn back row at night which says it all really.
It’s good but not even top 50 in the world imo when you really consider what else is out there. It’s just British people hyping it up tbh. They’re trying to speak hyperia’s eliteness into existence but voltron is way better
“I cant stand British people” ok valid coaster opinion but that’s just unnecessary. Saying you cant stand 70 million people without meeting them is generalising and stereotypical. That’s just a really rude thing to say.
It's very overrated. I saw alot of people acting like this is the first elite coaster ever in the UK but it's not. I liked Megaphobia Grand National and Stealth way more.
Too much is made of the ride being short. I’ve been on rides that are a lot longer but to me most of them are too long where they have been made long for the sake of it so they have lots of forgetful elements.
It’s much better to go find roller coasters you enjoy than to spend time bitching about how the new one isn’t good enough for you. As if Mack exists only to satisfy your impossibly high standards.
this is something i feel is true for British themeparks in general. I've heard people saw that Nemisis reborn is the best themed coaster in the UK. and then i look at rides like black mamba which is really similar but from the looks of things way better themed. or i look at at Efteling which might be less thrilling but you cant beat their ambiance, theming and music. UK does have some really good parks. but I feel like they don't hold up to the standards of Efteling and Phantasialand. just compare Taron and Fly to all the UK rides and the difference is clear... tbf i've never been to any uk park but from video's i've seen I don't think that alton towers or any other UK themepark is truly world class.
Yeah, the UK doesn’t have anything world class. Towers is really good but there’s several parks better, and you can find better examples of theming all across Europe
I think it’s a bit unfair comparing UK parks to some of the two best parks in the world, it should be seen as a park with a lot of history and a very strict set of rules to follow which has still achieved some pretty decent rides.
@@Test-qe7up yea but then again efteling and phantasialand have pretty scrict rules too. Efteling can't build above 30 meters and has to keep atleast 90 percent of it's land area as forested nature. And phantasialand can't do anything in a pretty big chunk of it's land untoutched because of noise and they cannot expand because Brühl is so strict. Those parks are top class why not anything made by merlin. Alton towers has a lot of limits put in place but that hasn't stopped other parks from being great.
I'm one of the few enthusiasts from the UK that felt disappointed with Hyperia. I live about 4hrs away and visited during construction which gave me high expectations as it looks so damn good off ride. BUT there's 2 huge elephants in the room, the 1st is I was born long before the UA-cam trend so content creators pushing their (sometimes bias opinions to get more VIP invites) don't blinker my own. The 2nd it's Mack, who seem to enjoy a slower less forceful ride experience. I feel anyone who rides Hyperia and then goes out and rides the name sake - Hyperion, will soon come to their senses and see what a tame coaster we got. So after booking my hotel on open day, getting to the park for 6am and being one of the early public riders... It was... well,,, just Meh, ok. Good by UK standards but there's better coasters over here, well better coasters at the same park even. I'll return in a few years when the tracks naturally settled and the coasters a few % faster.. but I've been on this rodeo enough to understand an average coaster. I wouldn't rate it in my top 20 Euro coasters.
It's not a UK top 10 for me but I never expected it to be. It's a fun ride though and I would imagine it would be great for someone who hasn't done any modern hypers.
ive ridden hyperia 7 times now, i think its slightly overrated, but thats only because of the lack of theming. the length is perfectly fine with me, its impressive how many amazing and unique elements it packs into the layout. if it was any longer, it probably would be too much for some people. you can see people’s reactions coming off the ride, and they are all blown away and satisfied with the ride. (by the way the rattle is only on 1 train, the other train is perfectly smooth)
@@rubenlikesrides_ yes it definitely would be too much for me if it was longer. Unfortunately every time I get out I have strong headache (especially later in the day, my first ride was fine). I don't know if it depends on the rattle, very strong, or the positive Gs.

Thanks for your input, I just didn’t experience it the way you did I guess
I feel it’s a lot easier to love the coasters in the UK when you live here. I doubt I’d be as attached to any of the rides here if I hadn’t grown up with them and if they weren’t often my only option when it comes to thrill rides to be honest. Pretty excited to have Hyperia which actually lives up to all of the incredible coasters I’ve rode in the states.
I totally agree with your points. Hyperia is unnecessarily short and it is rattly and was a bit underwhelming. It's not even my favourite in the UK but it still is a great coaster.
Mulch! LOL. I think you summed it up perfectly.
I am an American half British and it makes me sad seeing so many people call this the best coaster in the world when there are so many better ones! 😭
No one is calling it the best in the world lol
@@iliketrains3546 have you watched any British coaster enthusiasts videos 😭💀

It is my top coaster. I personally think it could of been a little longer, but I never come into the break run thinking I wish that was longer
Real af
Finally
I agree!
Loved this video. I think it excellently summarises everything that's wrong with Hyperia despite seemingly being a great ride. I still can't wait to go back to Thorpe to ride this thing, even if I knew it wasn't gonna be all that since it started construction 😂
Thank you Pol, hope you enjoy it
It is a very good coaster for the length of ride time it has.
It’s definitely not the best coaster in the uk. It’s the tallest and that’s about it. That’s not to say it’s not good but there are better rides here.
@@gumpy4960 ok you can have an opinion but I would disagree sooooooo much
@@FastFox1 I just can’t see what makes it the best ride in the uk. It’s tall and has one unique element, the out bank turn, Other than that it’s nothing special. Plus the theming, which plays a big part of making a ride special is poor.
@@gumpy4960 last thing I thought I was gonna hate it but I loved it it’s prolly just coz I like those sort of elements to a coaster: big fast airtime and speed and intensity even thought it isn’t that intense
best ride for me but i havent gotten outside the uk. however its not overrated. it is insane especially that drop but i need to get to some euro parks. def a no1 uk coaster and it has a potential to be top 10 in europe. thats my take
I agree that it’s #1 in the UK, but barely squeaks into top 20 in Europe imo
I havent ridden it yet. Its a 5 hour drive for us & up until recently the thing spent more time broken down than open.
As a big mainline European coaster fan... Sigh... I hope youre wrong 😢
My first reaction when I saw a POV of Hyperia was: "Wow! I would feel robbed coming off that short ride!". But then people keep saying that the elements make up for it. Let's just say it's not on top of my bucketlist.
it should be for sure i thought that aswell and when i rode it recently i was blown away and it didnt feel short at all since its so intense.
If the elements were better, it wouldn’t feel short to me since the overall level of intensity would be higher
@@Coaster_Critic the elements have good intensity and all provide good forces, how could they be thatttt much better ?
i absolutely agree with everything said especially since im one of those people you mentioned at 6:26 lol. only thing id say tho is the outerbank turnaround thing is significantly better in the front row as you get proper ejector going up into it which is then sustained all the way through and down through the roll (i was lucky enough to experience it on the front row with a friend using single rider) so if u had managed to get a front row ride i think you probably wouldve had a different opinion on that element. but yeah it 100% only gives floater in the back rows and then some nice pull down thru the roll. also about the rattle, it seems to be one of the 2 trains that is particularly worse for some reason as well as it being worse on both trains in the middle rows. the front and back rows on both trains are pretty much perfectly smooth. i had 2 rides on it that were quite bad in terms of the rattle, one of which was really quite awful because of it and i had to p much brace myself in every valley bc my back was having non of it but the other 3 rides on it were perfectly fine. and tbh it is quite concerning especially as its a brand new coaster and i rode it after it had only been open to the public for about 4 weeks in total so i just worry about what its going to ride like in 10 or 20 years time
Thanks for the input emerald4!
I don’t understand the rattle complaint. Like yeah it is there, but that’s it. It’s not like you get headbanging or anything it just exists. I get it shouldn’t be there but it doesn’t detract from the ride experience at all
I thought it was more than noticeable and absolutely took away from the experience. It’s not horrible but bad enough to detract from the ride
I can’t stand silly thoosies who complain about rattles
i mostly agree with you on this however one of my rides was absolutely awful and insanely uncomfortable because of it so i guess i just got unlucky since all of my other rides on it were fine
No seriously, what other ride you think is better than hyperia at thorpe park?
I don't think it's as bad as you, but I can absolutely recognize where you're coming from
I have never experienced a rattle on Hyperia. But I have heard one train has a rattle and one train does not so maybe I have got lucky over 6 rides.
0:01 chat I could name 5 European countries > the Uk in theme parks right of the bat…
Innit
It’s just Germany imo in terms of quantity, there might be one or two more if we’re talking quality

It’s the best roller coaster I’ve ever ridden. In 6 months time I’m going to ride Iron Gwazi, Mako, Manta and Montu.

I prefer Hyperia to Mako and Manta but the other 2 over Hyperia

yes the reporting on the construction was way over the top - OMG a fence, OMG a footer, OMG a digger
I shall return in like 9 months or whenever it is I go
Thank you Mr John Bean
I waited 2 hours for this ride, and my first thought at the end was "that was it"? I think because I'd seen so much hype over it in the last few months I thought it'd be a bit better. It's a good coaster but still doesn't beat Voltron or even Nemesis for me. Nothing gave me that 'wow' factor except maybe the valley after the first drop which hurt my back slightly. Wait sorry that's 'ow' factor. In all seriousness though I did enjoy it, just was disappointed by it's length and lack of more elements.
Try to have huge bias challenge (edited because it was mean)
In what way am I biased or narcissistic? I’m providing an honest assessment of the ride based off my experiences.
Since Merlin skimped on the original construction of the ride, I HIGHLY doubt they’d do anything you mentioned
They definitely won’t change the layout lol
@@Coaster_Critic ik😭😭 I can still dream tho
@@Coaster_Critic rest in piss splash plaza (theres literally a gate to where it wouldve been and the exit path is really wide to accommodate it)
It doesnt have to do with mack.
I meant the rattle had to do with Mack, Hyperia’s length is Thorpe and Merlin’s problem
I think it’s still the best in the UK as well, where my opinions differ is that I believe it’s not intense enough to justify its short length
Good coaster but does not hold a torch to a RMC. I do like it better than Skyrush which is overatted in my opinion.
I still think it’s the best in the UK, but it could have been a lot better
Too much is made of the ride being short. I’ve been on rides that are a lot longer but to me most of them are too long where they have been made long for the sake of it so they have lots of forgetful elements.
I agree that some rides drag out for too long, but Hyperia definitely could have used a few more elements
It’s much better to go find roller coasters you enjoy than to spend time bitching about how the new one isn’t good enough for you. As if Mack exists only to satisfy your impossibly high standards.
It's not bitching, it's a valid critique based on my opinions. I praise it for things and criticize it for others.
this is something i feel is true for British themeparks in general.
Alton towers has a lot of limits put in place but that hasn't stopped other parks from being great.
most UK thoosies are too thirsty for any honest neutral reviews. Merlin are cheap period, this ride should have been 4000+ foot long.
Thanks for sharing your experience, I have a higher opinion of it than you do
It's not a UK top 10 for me but I never expected it to be. It's a fun ride though and I would imagine it would be great for someone who hasn't done any modern hypers.
Why is it not top 10 in the UK?
I’d love to hear the 10 UK coasters that are better lmao
It's not possible ahaha
ive ridden hyperia 7 times now, i think its slightly overrated, but thats only because of the lack of theming. the length is perfectly fine with me, its impressive how many amazing and unique elements it packs into the layout. if it was any longer, it probably would be too much for some people. you can see people’s reactions coming off the ride, and they are all blown away and satisfied with the ride.
(by the way the rattle is only on 1 train, the other train is perfectly smooth)
I wouldn’t have had as much of a problem with the length if the elements were better, but for me it fell short in terms of intensity/length
@@rubenlikesrides_ yes it definitely would be too much for me if it was longer. Unfortunately every time I get out I have strong headache (especially later in the day, my first ride was fine). I don't know if it depends on the rattle, very strong, or the positive Gs.
