- Our own Dunken Francis sensei demonstrates and explains in detail the 15 movement "Kagami" (mirror) kata for the jo, which allows students to train both left and right sided as well as exploring fundamentals of posture and tai-sabaki (body movement). We have a bunch more Jo and ken video's planned, is there anything anyone would particularly like to see?
We've planned the Jo "knockdown" drill, so hopefully we can film that soon?
beautiful, will give this a go
😀😀😀😀
13-18 from the saito 31 jo kata? good idea doing it both sides for sure.
well spotted! it's nothing new, more a way to train on both sides
thanks for uploading, I've been wanting to play with this for a while
hope its useful
Maybe I am wrong but I believe you switch your grip and do yokomen on the first set and on the opposite direction you don't switch grip and do gyaku yokomen.
Yes, because the second set Is left sided, so the strike is gyaku. The point of the kata is that is performed on left and right sides to build symmetry, if that makes sense? Oddly enough the thing most people seem to have trouble with is the turn and keeping everything aligned. Good spot btw!
tsuki, gedan gaeshi, shomen, yokomen, tais sabaki. many principles here for study
100%
6 jo kata for both sides? Why not! Good for dexterity..I'll practice this for sure..
Or 15 Jo kata with a turn lol, either way it's a nice warm up for people and helps promote symmetry especially in newer students.
It's that turn that gets ya!
A very nice idea, where did this kata originate please?
This was put together by Dunken Sensei about 5 years ago, we use it mainly as a warm up drill
A real corker, nice and simple but tricky enough to make you step outside what "you're used to".
😀😀😀
Looking forward to trying this one.
Give it a go, it's a good warm up for the body and the brain lol. Feel free to ask questions if you get stuck
The most impressive thing about this video is how nice your hair is.
Why thank you. I hope that means it's world class so at least the kata could be considered great at a national level, you cheeky South African lol
neve seen this before - your invention? 13-18 from the 31 jo saito kata with symmetry yes?
Pretty much good observation
I notice that your hands always lead with your right hand during the yokoman attacks. Why do you not swap the leading hand as it seems to create an odd posture or have I not watched it properly? I do a 9 jo kata and mirror that swapping the lead hand as you go. Took some getting used to but feels more balanced now. Still early stages at the moment with it though.
Yes someone else mentioned that. You could of course swap to "left handed" but as the "gyaku" strike is more commonly used than an actual left handed strike in Aiki Jo this seemed more useful. Why not practice both, as a henka?
@@AIKIDOSILVERDALE I will practice both. With the Jo, I find it such a versatile weapon I try to practice as many different uses as I can. Although mostly concentrating on techniques at the moment, our green belt syllabus is huge. The gyaku strike, you swap hands after the strike? And I'm unfamiliar with the term henka.
@@paddyhinton9665 henka means variation. And yes to strike left handed you'd need to swap hams so the left hand leads
I see where I was different, I swapped my hands as I performed the defensive circle around the head on both sides , properly mirroring the action. More to practice, thanks I will continue my endeavour ( painful foot condition willing, age is a pain, literally)
@@paddyhinton9665 I'm with you there lol - keep off the red wine!
