Surf Fishing in Shovel Nose City

This beach happened to be absolutely full of California Guitar Fish also known as Shovel Nose Sharks! They were pushing up into the sand crab beds on the ends of the water. I was throwing Carolina rigs for surf perch and Corbina, but kept on spooking large shovel nose in the shallows. So many that Gary accidentally snagged one on the tail! It was released quickly. Some people like to keep these fish, but they are now considered to be a “Near Threatened” species. Only found between central California and the southern Gulf of California, these special animals are worth learning about and protecting. I love seeing them in such healthy numbers in my home waters.
We then quickly found ourselves in a school of hungry surf perch. I like to use 805 Custom Baits as my go to perch grub as they almost always produce keeper fish for me. We all got on the perch bite and had a blast
The weather was less than stellar and there was a small storm on approach. Lightning and thunder made us pack up quickly and get out of there just as the rain hit
