People talk about John and Flea as the musical core as they are, that's indisputable but Chad is the true binding force behind the chili peppers. His drumming is an over looked facet of their sound. He makes them step up their game each and every time they hit the stage, so that when they step up to the plate, the whole band is rocking out of the gate like a racehorse. A good drummer will make you play better, fact. One of the greatest drummers of all time!
Flea and Chad made RHCP. Good rhytm section is true core of the every band. Guitarists of the RHCP never were not awesome, and Anthony isn't the best singer - they could just fool around, if just Flea and Chad played straight.
vieri031 When John left, which i am not discounting as an integral part to their sound, my point is is that Chad's drumming up's their game live. His drumming is spiritual. Anyway, when John left, Chad and flea could have gone with John to do his solo stuff too (which Flea did on some songs but Chad did not). Then they would be a three piece without Anthony playing only prog rock instrumental - THAT is what I wished happened instead of new guitarist and John as solo-act. But hey, they are a corporation entity now, they can't stop -pun intended- the money making machine.
Heck yeah! Drummers are the shit, and I say that as a guitar player. Playing with a good creative drummer is like opening my eyes to see that the celestial cosmos of possible rhythms has opened before me.
Coltrane Cat Thanks for your comment, it really does .... "open one's eyes" to the possibilities of widening one's creative expression of instrumentation. Interestingly I've been watching a lot of Tool interviews lately, and Adam Jones, the guitarist was talking about how crucial Danny' Carey's poly-rhythmic style of drumming was to the creation of the many complex sections of their songs which blossomed from out of the riffs that he andJustin Chancellor, the bassist, came up with the day before. In other words, the song-writing process for most, if not all, bands starts when you blend your guitar riffs and ideas with a drummer's sensibility of song-structure and dynamics, period. That's when the "peaks and valleys" in a song gets created, which keeps you listening and wanting more. Hey, best wishes for your band, you know, it's not easy to play with drummers sometimes because of the digital revolution, so cherish it and hopefully, you can write songs that satisfy your soul. Peace.
That glass screen is to prevent the full power of their funk connecting, resulting in a lethal explosion of purity, ultimately bringing everyone to their musical demise.
With just 2 cymbals, a hi-hat, two toms, a snare and a bass drum, Chad can produce such amazing drumming improvisations, just goes to show that you don't need an 18-piece metal drum set to rock it!

Seriously one of the greatest and most talented rhythm sections you'll find in modern music. Period. Whether or not you're a RHCP fan, these two are still insanely talented and play off each other so naturally and intuitively to perfection.
They really play as one. The musical telepathy going on here is on another level of live musical improv, as far as rock and popular music goes.. Been playing together for like 28 yrs and they keep getting better. They are real musicians
Drums are about the feel. The more sounds and space you have, the more creative you can be. Shame that so many closed minded people view it as "showing off"
How many pieces your drum-kit has has ZERO to do with your skills. There are great and terrible drummers on both big and small kits. It's really about genre, options, and personal preference. Chad plays Funk-Rock/Pop. It is very uncommon in that genre to have a giant drumset.
This is what happens when two musicians learn about each other's styles. What I love about these guys' jams is the dynamic evolution. It's never a smooth ballad or a crazy funk rock shed, it's everything they know.
Chad Smith went to MI. and because of him and my buddy who graduated from there, i am enrolled. and my drum skills have improved! IM COMING SOON CHAD! :D
Chad is only getting better as a drummer, which is incredible considering how long he has been playing. It takes a lot of work and focus to be able to consistently get better over a span of 30 years. I would think his talent would top out at some point.. maybe he's at his peak now? Or he was in 2009?
@George Kamil listen to chad Smith's bombastic meatbats. And just watch a few videos of him mang. Of course everybody has their own style but hes always building on it. He can be a technical jazz fusion drummer u will see if u listen to what I said.
Chad as a drummer has really nice skills for improoving and soloing and sweet ghost notes feeling, real profesional, with Flea there are super consistent duad.
CHECK OUT THE DOUBLE RIGHT HAND CRASH ON THE RIDE CYMBAL TIME STAMP 8:43 Hitting from the bottom on the way up and from the top on the way down. So sick. Love Chad Smith. They FEEL each other=) God I wish to play with someone that talented as Flea and it's my dream to have such a friendship with some music guys to be in a band together=)
He plays ghost notes like a boss!
Charlie L U know the funky shit 👍. Is originated on 'second line' from New Orleans and the african cadence of Babatunde Olatunji in drums.
Holy ghost notes

When chad first auditioned for the band he even then started leading flea when they were jamming couldn’t agree more

Ya, or, they dont want Flea humping Chad's leg
Or flying drumsticks.😂

It's awesome to see that their funk has never been interrupted, this could be on the Chad and flea show for sure.
ghost notes

I love how Chad always plays big on small drumkits. He makes drummers showing off with giant kits look ridiculous.

It depends on the genre, I'm not particularly a big fan of metal and I don't even like the kits that drummers use in that style.
