@TheLunaticLycan or anyone still looking for a game to try out. Planetside 2 has the combined arms and a large player run war, it doesn't have the RTS per say. Unless you have a large group and you lead them. Although it isn't as large as it once was, I still can get into 3 way 96 v 96 v 96 battles on the USA's east coast sever ( that's called Emerald by the way). Although it isn't WW2, it is Free to play. It can be a little hard to run with maxed out settings but it's loads of fun. There are a decent amount of guides to help those who want or need it, stay within the last 2 years and you should be good. Ignore the doom Sayers they have been around for forever, the game is almost 12 years old and still here. It still gets updates, albeit very slowly.
I think the heroes and general's replacement depends mostly on what you liked and got out of h&G in the first place. If you liked playing the war map and you liked that player interaction; give Planetside 2 a try, it's not the same but it's probably the closest you are going to find. If you liked the gun play, there are lots of options for you to consider, personally, I know a lot of former h&G players that started playing Battle bit and have turned that into their main game for that reason. Ultimately, there is nothing on the market right now that will give you the unique blend of strategy, tight mechanics and progression that heroes and generals offered, even if it was a grindy glitch fest half the time.
I went to war thunder too, because it scratches that grinding itch i had with hng where it made me feel some sense of accomplishment when i unlock stuck. And i did enjoy tank gameplay in hng a lot. But if hng magically was back i would instantly drop war thunder like the dirty rag it is

My suggestion for people looking for an H&G replacement is honestly just try Enlisted. I think people see the word "Gaijin" and automatically loose any interesI. I kinda understand that point of view, but why not give it a go anyway? It's free-to-play after all, so if you don't like it after a few battles just unistall it, no big loss. I myself have enjoyed Enlisted for multiple years now. Some of my elite soldiers are even named after my old H&G soldiers, so at least this way they live on in a different game 😊
Lycan, i don't have patient anymore, can you please try to review Easy Red 2 game ? They have a fanatical community core, similar with HG. It has similar mechanics except no RTS. It was build by one guy overtime.
someone needs to pay some devs to make a community server launcher for h&g, titanfall 2 had a problem with ddosing and the players made a third party launcher with community servers and mods

Era Free To play games is kinda dead, free to play games this days are mostly on battle pass system and in the end of the year it will cost you as any good game you could buy to play for year.

Enlisted on its glory days circa 2021-2022 sure I would've recommended it but not anymore with the merge update destroyed one of the game's selling factors to the point that was forced to uninstall back in December and trying to find a replacement. Easy Red 2 yes I have the game even though the amount of Eastern Front content wasn't scratching the itch enough so search is still on but already frustrated for months on failing to do so even if its a full priced game if I have to but nothing impressed me.

You should try Isonzo for infantry combat. I know it's WW1 but still.

i guess the most similar game now is enlisted, from gaijin. even have the progress like h&g.
