It’s just past midnight, and it’s another sleepless night. My dad died in 1997 of cancer, at the age of 82 , and when I was 45. There hasn’t been a day since his death , that I haven’t thought of him. Tonight in my sleep deprived stupor , I thought of him again, and this song. Dad used to prop me up on his lap to steer our old 1939 Chevy Pickup truck, back to town from the farm. Allan Jackson, tonight, brought that precious memory , crashing back again into my 72 year old head. Beautiful song , Mr Jackson! Love you daddy!😢
Know what you mean, lost my grandfather who was my father figure since I was 14 months old, now I'm 19, he passed away about a month ago. Miss him more everyday. The moments you have with your father will always hold a special place in your heart!!
God bless you sir. Awesome memories you have and a great dad. Miss mine also and think of him every time I hear this. My car was a 85 Chevy Impala. Dang.. what good memories.👍💯😢
When he said it was painted red, stripe was white god it takes me back wasn’t a boat but a bronco and that floor board would get hot on my feet and sometimes the key would fall out of the ignition while I was driving because it was wallerd out but god those were the good ol days ❤
I’m 16 years old. Recently heard this on the radio. My dad knew every single word to it. Never really hit me until I listened to the lyrics. The bond he and my grandpa had was perfect. Now I listen to it and relate it to me and my dad. I love this song
My dad never took time to give me these memories. Thank God for my grandaddy giving them to me though. I'm 27 now with a 3 month old, and I cant wait to give him these memories as he grows.
Eldest grandson lived with me his last year in high school -- at his request -- and, also at his request, I taught him to drive, helped him study the DPS handbook, and took him to take his test. He aced it and was, and still is, a very good driver.

My dad use to bring me to empty parking lots when I was 8-9 and let me drive his car. He passed away when I was 10 this song has so much meaning to me. I’m 28 now and a father of two beautiful children and am now creating the same great memories my father left me with. We bought a 16ft 80s fiber glass boat and fixed her up this summer and let the kids drive. I get emotional hearing this song because it reminds me of the past future and present.
This reminds me of my father to he passed away a few days ago . We use to go fishing and he would let me drive the boat . And I think now that I would be smiling bigger than a hero back then with him .
Barb Bunker I just lost my grandpa and I had heard this song a million times until it was played at his funeral and it hit me so hard. I wish I could have went out on the boat with him one more time.

Thank you so much Alan. You made me remember when my dad taught me to drive. I´m from Venezuela, my mother tongue is spanish, my english is very basic, but I wanted to say thank you for all your songs and specially for this one. God bless you.
I'm 60 years old. I grew up in Metro Atlanta but still very Country. This song chokes me up and makes me fight back tears every time I hear it. Excellent job Alan Jackson.
I was 12 when my Daddy let me drive his 18 wheeler. I could reach the clutch but he had to change the gears. I went 1 mile but I thought I conquered the world. ❤

My dad taught me how to drive in 1980 when I was 8 in his 1962 Ford truck with a 3 speed manual on the column. We went to an uncompleted subdivision (streets in, no houses yet). Thanks dad.
I would sit on my dad's lap and steer the truck Dad was sending me to the store at 15. 3 on the column. Man the good ol days. Where a kid could drive with no lic or insurance, The 80's rock on.

I aint got much money to spend on things like new boats and whatnot but I just restored an old bass tracker pt175 boat that I got for $800. It had trees growing in it. Well after a long 2 years of restoration work on and off (I work full time so had to work on it in my spare time) my daughter has gone from 2 years old to 4 years and that old bass tracker boat went from having trees growing in it to going on its first voyage in ages. I can't wait for the memories my daughter and I are about to make in this old bass tracker.
This song makes me think of things I haven''t thought of in ages, but they're memories that will never be forgotten. I remeber as a kid,, my dad took me to the empty racetrack parking lot in grampas old car after he passed away. I couldn't have been more than 9 or 10 years old, and in that big empty parking lot, dad let me drive grampas old Impala. That was a lot of car for a little kid., and i never knew why dad did it, but imagine he had a similar memory with him and grampa. I got 4 kids of my own now,, and there was no way i was letting them.learn to drive from my wife.. I've taught all of them to ride a bike and put three of four on the road now.. One of the greatest treasures of my life as a dad to make those memories with my kids. Alan Jackson is the greatest IMO. Simple, God fearing, faithful family man, and an absolute treasure for using music to help us polish the memories of our lives into priceless gems. God bless Alan Jackson.
Im not a big country fan but this is one of the only songs ever to make me cry. It doesn't make me think of my parents. It makes me think of my kids and hope they have good memories with me when they are older. And yup I cried halfway through typing this lol
I was a teenager when this song was released. I have a girl and a boy now with a beautiful wife. I let them drive everything we own all the time. Gives me chills to think that maybe one day they will remember those times when km gone

What a heartfelt tribute to your Daddy Gene. I love the fact that you decided to record an upbeat song for him. Although I would love to hear the first song you wrote for him too. I bet it is beautiful as well. Nobody can pen lyrics like you do. You're such a blessing to my life. Thank you,Darlin',for all your very being has given me!💙😉
My dad passed away 3 years ago from alzheimers/dementia. This song reminds me of when he taught me to drive. He probably didn't remember it at the end, but still one of my fondest memories. This song hits differently now, and always brings a tear to my eyes.
My dad had an Oldsmobile station wagon wood panel. Let me drive to Hinckley Casino down dirt road they used to have. What a memory one of the few songs that get you emotional. Still nice to have him around.
I'm French and just discovered this song yesterday at the amusement park. I love this song cause it's deep and also real for my own childhood. Thank you Alan Jackson! I hope more songs like this cross the Atlantic!
This is an example of poetry where the person is talking about something simple but everyone knows and feels he's talking about something much bigger. One of my all time favorite songs that regularly chokes me up.
I have played this atleast three times a month for my oldest daughter. one day it came on the radio, and she said: "Dad, is that you?" My heart skipped a beat

My Dad let me take his car for a ride in a parking lot by myself when I was 8 years old. Years later we talked about how crazy he was to do that and how this song always reminded us of that memory. We never had many father/son memories due to his life struggles, but this song will always make me smile. This year marks 10 years that I lost my Dad and man, I really miss him.
My dad used to tell me how this song always made him think of us when we were young and we'd sit on his lap, steering the wheel... I now think of my own 3 girls as they get older. It's sad how time just flies past.
My grandma just passed in December, she used to listen to this song when she'd take me to school in the morning and bought me this album when I was kid. Now I can't listen to it without bawling my eyes out.
My dad passed this Tuesday and when we were kids he would always take us out to the country to drive. I will cherish those memories forever. I love you, Daddy!!
Heard this song earlier yesterday afternoon while taking my girlfriend home before I went to work. I sure do miss my dad. My dad sat beside me when I got my license. Dad,I miss you so much.
My dad passed back in March at 87. He was a veteran, honorable and hard-working. Special days when he let me drive the boat and this song it's hard... Y'all would have liked him alot!❤️👊🇺🇸
Or the memories we wish we’d gotten the chance to have. My daddy passed when I was eleven, but I’m so thankful others’ have these memories. I can picture it in my mind, and he’d have been great at teaching me. ❤
Couldn’t have written it better. Alan wrote the song for me and my dad. This song has reminded me of my dad for years and was part of my memorial to him at his funeral. I knew it was special when I saw Alan at the Houston livestock show and rodeo and he dedicated it to Daddy Gene.
I love this song. My dad and I build a little plywood boat ( we painted it red with a white stripe, just like the song ) together my senior year in highschool. The next year he was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer and was gone 6 months later. It's been almost 3 years now and I still can't listen to this song without breaking down.
Biggest fight my brother and I had was when he was teaching me to drive a standard shift!!! Something about don't put it in reverse when you're trying for 2nd! Oops! The car and I both survived. His girlfriend taught me! 😏🥴😲
Alan Jackson Played Craven Last year, A Country Festival in Canada with over 30 thousand people lasting 3 days. He showed up for his night of Performances in a Old pickup Truck with blue jeans and a cowboy hat. The Security Didn't believe it was Alan Jackson so he sat outside patiently for an hour before it was finally cleared up and some extremely embarrassed security guards working crap duty the rest of the festival later.. He got up and rocked the stage better then the headliners and was voted best Performer of the festival. Just a Class act and the most humble 6 ft blonde cowboy you'll ever meet.

This song brings back the pleasant memories of me and my dad. He passed away from cancer ten and a half years ago. He will always be in my heart
Hi Charlotte, thanks for the nice comments and for the words of encouragement. You seems to be one of my real fans. If you have anything to share with me about your stories or anything, you can always contact me here and we can talk better. .. 609-293-0116... have a great day and weekend ahead.
My Dad just passed away from cancer on January 23rd 2022. I'm so sorry for your loss.
That's so touching. This song often makes me cry because it's so nostalgic.

I’m sorry that you both lost your dads. I hope you have memories of driving😊
Wow... sad
Good on you brother they will keep those memories just like u did with your dad.
Wow, im sorry to hear about the loss of your dad at such a young age. You were fortunate to have had a great man as a father. Keep his legacy going!
My dad did the same he died when I was 15 now I’m 20 I inherited his 01 Ford F-150 that he taught me to drive in
My DADDY was EVERYTHING to me! This song was PERFECTLY written for us! HE let me DRIVE!!!
Sending you roses 🌹
Peace and love always ❤❤❤❤❤❤
this makes me tear up, I think about my Dad letting me drive the boat or teach me to drive a car, glad I still have him
Barb Bunker I just lost my grandpa and I had heard this song a million times until it was played at his funeral and it hit me so hard. I wish I could have went out on the boat with him one more time.
I don't have my dad anymore 6 years without him
We had the same boat with a red and white 56’ Johnson 30 hp... Dad has been gone since 2,002....Memories...are we all making good ones ?
your dad didn't yell at you the whole time?
I'm still a dad and my kids play this song when we drive because I taught them how to drive my truck
GOD knows you're tired.Don't give up.Your breakthrough is just around the corner. You're transitioning into a new season! You'll end the year strong & victorious in the Name of Jesus
Amen.
Thank you for this 🙏
I haven’t heard this song in probably 15 years, for some reason it just popped into my head today. All the memories it brings back give me goosebumps.
It seems so long ago since this was on the radio but I remember listening to this with my dad when I was just a kid and man it takes me back I love my dad I hope he gets to see my kids

That's great. thanks for the love and support i hope you keep listening and watching my videos and God bless you.. send me your email address so I'll text you
You did that day
My dad had me driving at 5.. many night at 8 he would be passed out I would get us home.. now I drive a big rig all across the country
I think I was 10 when my dad put me in his lap and let me drive his truck. He's a trucker too. It was at night of course. It was awesome.
Good dads will always have your back wheather you go a mile or you go the distance .
I learned on a '64 with 3 on the column in '79. Fun times......
3 on the tree baby
Makes me remember my dad, he passed away decembre 25th 2013, i was 23
Makes me cry even though it’s a happy song. Just takes me back to days with my late daddy.
That's good to hear, thanks Cheryl
Alan loves those girls so much. You can tell when he talks about them. He is a proud father. They are also very proud of him. They are blessed
@Alan Jackson Hi Alan, l am from Alberta Canada. Have loved your sweet voice for twenty eight years.l am still a very active 80 year old. But would love to get to know the man behind that so familiar voice. Will always listento your music.❤❤🙏🙏
@Alan Jackson Hello Alan. I am from Alberta Canada. I have been a fan for many years. Love your sweet voice. I only write what l feel.
If you have fond memories of your parents and children of your own, this is one of the greatest songs of all time.
When I was a kid, they played this at my dad's funeral, I never knew what it meant until this day today, that was February 14th 2010, I feel like I just grew a little inside.
Sometimes a Dad just shows how much He respects and Loves His Daghters and They take strength from His Love.
Music like this touch my soul..
69 years old - Grabs my soul, chokes me up, makes me cry - every time.. Sometimes musical poetry slips past the suits running the music "industry."

Well welcome to the club, this song the epitomy of fatherhood. Anyone have a Kleenex?
I aint got much money to spend on things like new boats and whatnot but I just restored an old bass tracker pt175 boat that I got for $800. It had trees growing in it. Well after a long 2 years of restoration work on and off (I work full time so had to work on it in my spare time) my daughter has gone from 2 years old to 4 years and that old bass tracker boat went from having trees growing in it to going on its first voyage in ages. I can't wait for the memories my daughter and I are about to make in this old bass tracker.
I 85 yrs. old and if could live another 85 it’s still the best
I'm 19 years old and Alan Jackson is by far my favorite artist and still will be when I'm 85.

Very good song sir. But there's 100 better easy..
I am just 14 but i still know what good music means :)
And yup I cried halfway through typing this lol
if this made you cry, then I know that you gonna be a good dad
It make me think of both

What a heartfelt tribute to your Daddy Gene. I love the fact that you decided to record an upbeat song for him. Although I would love to hear the first song you wrote for him too.
I bet it is beautiful as well. Nobody can pen lyrics like you do. You're such a blessing to my life. Thank you,Darlin',for all your very being has given me!💙😉
You're blessed
I growed up in the bush, Victoria and NSW Australia. How come Alan from America sings songs about my past like he grew up here? Amazing.
People are people. Aussies and Americans have a lot in common.
Will always come back here I love this song man
I have played this atleast three times a month for my oldest daughter. one day it came on the radio, and she said: "Dad, is that you?" My heart skipped a beat

I am listening....Daddy let me drive
Hey man I’m still listen great song
What’s it gotta do with you?
stupid question!!!
Me.. for sure ..
He has never made a bad song that I know of Alan Jackson is a great song writer with great song 🎵
Always love ❤❤❤❤
An amazing song by one of the last true country artists 😃

We don't look for old songs, we look for the memories they carry🤩😍
Truth. I like this.
Oh that’s good stuff
Or the memories we wish we’d gotten the chance to have. My daddy passed when I was eleven, but I’m so thankful others’ have these memories. I can picture it in my mind, and he’d have been great at teaching me. ❤

I will be honest. I hated Country Music, until I went to a Funeral for a good friends Half Brother. And I fell in love with it through this song.
This song made me cry 🥺❤️

Awesome song. My Dad let us drive an pick in the back acres of our property. Absolutely loved it. ❤ I sure do miss him😢

So my dad did exactly what Alan lived and did. I was 10 and learned how to drive manual on a Kia Sportage. Today i'm a racing instructor and if it wasnt because of my father I wouldnt be the man I am today. What an incredible moment. I promise ill do the same with my kids. Enjoy that song with the deep of your hearth! Peace xxx
As someone who had a really rough childhood “The piece of my childhood that will never be forgotten” hits so hard but is seriously the best sentence I’ve ever heard.
