How police manipulate facial recognition

- Police across the country are using facial recognition to check IDs and find suspects -- but are they using it the right way? A new study from Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy & Technology suggests even good algorithms can be put to bad uses, particularly once police start getting creative with the images.

Hi ! ;-)
So it is like it always is - The technology is not the problem - the humans are ...
It need to be banned
😂 The Machine said it was you😳
i mean, i can't imagine it to be any other way and that's like deadass scary
The Rise of the Machines!
Oh those buttons.....
Vladislav Kerechanin 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great content Russell! Keep up the good work.
I hear that Juggalo makeup works to break face recognition. Anyone want to clown around?
WHOOP WHOOP
profile picture checks out
Barf
Minority Report is officially here.
Yes!!
It had started way back... We just didn't realise it. The Rise of the Machines is upon us!
So this is nothing new. I dont know how many times as a teen we were stopped or approached because our group "fit the description" were driving a "similar vehicle" to something/someone supposedly involved in a crime. It was really just an excuse to search.
ryan you survived to tell the story. you've got the right skin color
"It was really just an excuse to search." Supposition on your part. How do you know you didn't fit the description of a person or vehicle? You could have followed up a the time to find out the facts. But instead you're just complaining later.
It is 2019! Why do you have a notch?
lolololol
🙄
He reminded me of the essential phone.
thank you for the good laugh! 😂
Hahaha
No mention about how China is using it ...
IF you want to understand the problems..... LOOK AT CHINA's usage!
Funniest opening 20 seconds I've heard in a while!
Also, it possibly police can use this tech to just arrest ppl they feel annoyed with. Example, people doing a protest they used FR to see if the person did a crime like running a red light or forget to pay a ticket they just arrest for that. Maybe the police didn't like your face. So they just take a picture and search in the database to just arrest you for something because they didn't like you.
a lot of people are about to be in jail for nothing... again
I don't think an outright ban is correct solution for something like this. The problems as described in the video seem to be more a lack of accountability on the side of the user and a lack of data integrity on the side of the manufacturer. A more constructive use of legislative oversight would be to require manufactures to close the gap on racial recognition disparity and until that gap is closed and certified by an independent third party they can't use it for law enforcement.
By the same token, there should be regular audits of how the system is being used by officers and what information is being used to conduct a stop. If an officer is dialing the accuracy settings to fit a narrative then corrective action should be taken, whether that be further training or disciplinary.
We as a society should be wary of tech like this and should work to make sure it is being properly used and monitored before wide scale adoption but outright banning of tech should not be the answer.
🙌🏼🙌🏼
@Blake Helms You, sir, seem to be a sane individual.
*gets shot and killed*
"The machine said it was you .."
The title should rather be: The moral problem of the police and tech
Love vids with this guy!
Do wearing spectacles create iny differences in recognizing face if the original photo uplaoaded is without spectacles
Another very good reason not to support Amazon.
Then there may be a carnage
Soudweep Banerjee 😂😂😂
Great Video
Very nicely presented Verge, not overly politicised. Keep this high standard pls. Cheers.
This video needs the input of folks in the industry. A good video overall but dated in how the neural networks work
3:04 I see an orange line not red.... Is this another white and blue dress??
This is the best video I’ve seen by Russel Brandom so far.
talked about algorithm and to be honest to make one algorithm you have to do so much work... algorithms are not easy to make as you just said ..
The machine from Person Of Interest is REAL!!😥
I see you are a person of good taste.
Crazy I got pulled and car wasn’t in my name but they acted like it was a sting.1 pulled me over and the other one cut in front of me going to work.Came to window said my name and all and said I’m associated with the owner of the car .
So all people will know the secret identity of 🕷 spiderman !!!! 😢😭
lol this comment is funnier cuz you have a venom picture
I kept waiting for him to say "we have to look at the Big Picture" but it never happened.
This is a great video! Nice job.
1984
Hol up did he just say all black people are at risk? Lmao
I believe he meant a community at risk [of being misidentified by the algorithms].
The risk to individuals in other contexts would not amount to a community at risk. A community at risk would have to be shrinking or disappearing, but that still wouldn't make sense to his point.
@SassyBasilisk65 It's literally a story about how all black people look the same to this technology. It would be very difficult to discuss this without falling into that hole, because language isn't always perfect, but I really don't think that this reporter on this particular story is unaware of the trope.
Your right to privacy is gone, yet none of you even noticed. Ignorance is bliss, or not.
Corporations violate your privacy far more than any government can. The difference is that your government can put you in jail.
@Giulio Campobassi. I guess that's kinda true but what about the NSA?
@@haydencase7886 NSA is a special case, but there is usually judicial oversight, ie application of law, to determine what govt can do.corporations can be more opaque.. until they're caught like the Cambridge analytical scandal
Wait. So movies about police are lies?
I'm all for it as a person that doesn't break the law
If we knew who did what and where they were, crime would drop dramatically
we are already on camera when we shop for food, clothing, furniture, electronics etc
if the option to know if a dangerous person was near you, your spouse or your kids we'd take it
i love you great vid deserves 1000000000000000000 subs yes i love you
Oneth!
Surveillance is mainly monitor to stop any crime not to make it happen It cant be used in your personnel rooms but in a open area where large people move around its not easy to monitor by human
Government and science algorithms ?
I really dont get the scandal!
What about Apples depth-sensing Face ID?
It's data is stored on iPhone only, and only the user can access it no one else, so it's safe :-)
Nishith Joshi lets hope
Seems pretty black mirrory to me
and there i was thinking china is the only one doing this stuff to its citizens. What can you do this is the future, anything that make your life easier is the future.
Seems cold
I thought it was about phone unlocking
China has been using it for ages
I love this argument. Good job. Don't ever write about Plex and spin it as a privacy netflix.
"Should the police"
Well, probably not.
If you have to ask "Should the police..." then the answer is "No".
Once I got an iPhone XS and a HomePod a month later I knew I was giving my life away. I am now... forever being watched and listened to.
Hmmmmmm..... 🤔
What’s wrong with stopping a suspect ?
It doesn’t mean your human rights are violated.
The software needs to be banned!!!!
HEY BUT DON'T WE HAVE TO LOOK AT A BIG PICTURE!?!?
To better understand this we are going to have to look at...The Big Picture...
Why shouldn’t they have this tech?
George Orwell predicted this long ago!Soon we can all be convicted of face crime!
And end up room 101.
3:08
@3:01 just waiting when color was about to be dragged in 😂
It's a fair point backed by data tho
I was waiting for him to say : we need to look at the big picture. 🙄
Police stops do NOT have “dangers of their own” if you just listen to the officer.
You’re delusional...
Not necessarily...
Might be for you but there are others who would beg to differ
“A police-stop is a risk on its own.” Whaaat?
How about we start to act civilized before we start blaming machines?🤷🏻♂️
Privacy is a lost cause. Good luck fighting for it!
We gave our privacy for free lol
"revolutionary technology can't be fully utilised for good because humans bad"
racial recognition
I think the arguments proposed in this video are not well presented, why is a police stop problematic?
Law enforcement use it to catch criminals. But people will just complain that they will use for it no good reason.
Go indigenous and paint your face.
How is a simple police stop dangerous??
Clearly mistaken on how this actually works. No police department is going to say that "the machine said it was you, therefore it is you". The machine doesn't say who it is, all it does is produce matches of certain peoples who may be a suspect. Once that happens, the officer can detain you for further questioning. All this is doing is helping officers find where a possible suspect lives. So much fear mongering about literally a piece of software that just looks through the list of people who make look like that for you.
I love the convenience of faceID and I trust Apple not to abuse my private data.
They might not directly abuse your private data but they might sell it to someone who will. :-P
Wanna bet this wouldn't be a "controversy" if those lines were reversed?
Here we go again. Even machines are racist
I disagree. The problem will be going away.
I'm a person of color... white
So all people will know the secret identity of 🕷 spiderman !!!! 😢😭
