The big thing that I'd like to know is whether the "smart thermostat" is smart enough to allow for a single set temperature and intelligently select between heating and cooling. For example, my current Ecobee (a fairly old model) lets me select both a heating and cooling temperature, but they must be 5 degrees apart. This tends to be problematic in the spring and fall where temperatures can easily be warm during the daytime (necessitating cooling) but colder in the evening/night (necessitating heating). It boggles my mind that the "smart" thermostat can't see that the temperature has fallen below the set temperature and that the temperature outside (via sensor or Internet-based weather) is also below the set temperature, and based upon that, heating may be needed. (I think you could have a user tolerance level for how quickly to adjust.)
