I saw him in London in 1982, we had cheap seats behind a pillar. The people next to us left after about 10 minutes and we enjoyed the rest of the show from their seats. One of the funniest men of our generation
Was watching old Dame Edna just a few weeks before he passed and I was so shocked. He was brilliant and I loved Dame Edna and Les Patterson. Brilliant! Thank God for giving us Barry Humphries!!!!
As an American, I wish we had a Barry Humphries. We don't....period. Not for 30 years. His wit, intelligence, and utter disregard for political correctness makes him a King among everyone. We have a few brave comedic types in the US who have been cancelled. When Benny Hill program came to the US around 1980, both of my grandmothers and mother were total fans..and my elderly mother loves Les! They were/are badass women who understood the undertones of what was happening. I feel no guilt of every last bit of UA-cam contest I've watched of Les. Sorry for the rambling...but as as bloke from the US, I wanted to say how much appreciate what you all appreciate.
Ahead of his time 😂. As a proud Aussie we are very sad to see him shrug off his mortal coil. We need him and his sense of humour more than ever ! Your tribute well said 🙏☝️🍺
And tragically Australia which always prided itself on being irreverent is now following America and the Uk in the politically correct stakes like you wouldn’t believe.
@@lorraineprahm5461 psst its called satire. Its about highlighting poor behaviour by making a joke about it. Also I understand anyone who is not familiar with the Australian condition may be perplexed. Yes its cringey, feel free to search other aussie comedians from days past. Start with Norman Gunston. I saw him at the Regal theatre in Subiaco then the next day I had breakfast with him, I just happened to bump into him on the street. I read his biography and was a huge fan, he truly was a comic genius and Sir les was the antithesis of Dame Edna, they played off each other to perfection and my view is he was the funniest comedian ever to exist. Nobody could ever better his lifetime act.

Simon Brenden. Humphries doesn't despise his characters, he enjoys them. He sees the humour and the tragedy in them and uses them to shock and amuse his audiences and in so doing points at our own foibles and hypocrisies. But you probably don't get that, Simon because you see yourself above these character creations. And you aren't!
MrDogsledder Simon deleted his comment and ran away after I replied to him, Mr Dog, but I think you get the gist of what he said when you read my reply to him.
Australia’s favourite Son will be sorely missed and we won’t ever see the likes of him ever again! P.S And he bought my mate and me a pint in Cambridge!❤️
Ken Bellchambers Your name is spelled wrong. It must be BELL END, surely. You MUPPET. They are neither, 'dismayed' unlike your wife on her wedding night. You have taken it upon yourself to let us know how you judge them to feel. Another great success for YOU, vicar. Bore off.
Brilliant Barry at his best. Hard to believe this is now 25 years ago as I'm watching it in 2016 shortly after this great artist retired from touring. Also liked the little plug for the street he grew up on in suburban Camberwell in Melbourne, ie Christowell.
Oh if only we had more like Barry today a true genius who pushed the boundaries of political correctness to bring joy and laughter to millions, RIP Sir Les.
What a comedic genius! I have been watching him for years. He made me laugh so hard, I took an honest to God spit take, when I was trying to finish a pint of beer.
As an Australian, I must report how important this genius was in my life. First saw him in an advert for “A nice night out” in 1961 in Newcastle New South Wales. Later I learned a lot about alcoholism from him, after he recognised his alcoholism. His interest in literature, art and history was extraordinary. Now he is gone. So sad, but his work will live on. Vale John Barry Humphries.
Met Barry in a South Melbourne cafe by sheer chance about 8 years ago… He was on his own, stylish as ever, waiting for a taxi over a coffee. I sat, smiled at him and he did the same. He commented on my runners! This triggered an opening for a conversation… We chatted about Melbourne, what he was up too here in Melbourne, discussed television and film in which I was also working in at the time. 20 minutes later arrived. Walked to the door with him. He shock my hand and we wished each other well. Indeed one of the most ‘striking’, nicest guys you would ever wish to meet. Rest In Peace Barry. Really really miss you…
Too bad this character didn't take off as well as Dame Edna - obviously due to the adult nature of the comedy. But he's hysterical even all these decades later.
Yes, and that shows we’ve all matured over the years… and so the cycle continues. Why is this surprising to anyone. Of course, it should never be banned or erased. If you’re the same person you were 40 years ago, I feel sorry for you and those around you.
Les Patterson is one of the greatest comedy characters ever created. RIP Barry, than,s for the chuckles.
By far
The best
Fully Agree 😅 Way funnier for us Aussies than the damn Edna one ...
