- Опубліковано 14 лют 2021
- I picked up the Moment Cinebloom diffusion filters a bit ago and have gotten tons of questions about them, so I went out and gave them a try with my Fujifilm X100V at night. I'm also testing out some new presets, so if you read this, let me know how they look. I also filmed the intro and outro of this video on the new X-E4 and 18mm f/2.

This is so helpful! I love how you just put each filter up one after the other so it is really easy to see the difference.
Love these Cinebloom filters! Need to try them out!
Exactly the informative video I was looking for on these filters. Thanks again! 👍🏻
Was subbed to this channel at less than 10k, i can already tell it has huge potential. See ya at 100k
This is the video I needed. Thank you. I wasn't sure which filter I wanted to buy. I used to use a version of this technique I learned from reading about the photographer Robert Farber; he would use a UV or SKY or a clear filter and spray hairspay up in the air. He would then hold the filter underneath the particles as they fell. How close to the spray and for how long you held it there determined how much diffusion you would get on your filter. I used it shooting a RB67 back in the true film days. Works very well.
Just got this camera this week and loving it! Ordered all the accessories you recommended. Can’t wait to receive them. This filter looks so cool.
Hey thanks, Anna! It’s so good, huh?
@@benjhaisch it is amazing! I own the xpro2, and this is the first newer Fuji camera I have purchased. The autofocus is the biggest difference for me as well as the amazing viewfinder update. It is so much quicker. Definitely a fun and gorgeous camera!
Super rad effects. Going to have to give them a try
Thank You :) I was waiting for this video. Always wanted to know the difference between 10 and 20 on x100v
Good job explaining the difference and the basics
Was looking forward to this
i really need to buy one of these. i always neglect filters too much, but this one is fantastic. 😀
I learned about diffusion filters because of the Moment CineBloom. Wanted to purchase one for my X100F, but a the time, they didn't have them on a 49mm size so I got the Black Pro Mist 1/8. It stays a 100% of the time on my X100F.
¡¡¡ Un gran video muy explicativo !!!
Muchas gracias por el montaje de fotografías comparativas
I swear you are going to make me buy this camera.
Sorry, not sorry, my dude 😂
He made me buy one 😂 no I was saving for it since it came out and he sold me on it
I ended up getting a second hand X100F because I didn't want to spend $1400 on the X100V. My only complaint about the X100F could be that the screen does not tilt. Other than I'm quite happy with it as an everyday camera.
@@moncho33 I got mine on sale for $1000
@@SadSpaceDuck That’s a great price for the X100V! I paid $600 for the X100F. Less than a thousand shots, extra battery and thumb grip.
Cheers dude, I appreciate the examples to help me with my choice.
Great examples...I get it now. 20% too much for me for photos but I did like the 10%. Thanks.
I got the Tiffen Glimmer Glass and I'm really excited to see the difference between the Cinebloom and that Glimmer Glass.
Amazing photos!
10% looks great!!!
Good one. Enjoyed that. Thank you, I appreciate that!
Thank you for the effort! Just what I wanted!
Will own these for sure. Well as soon as the back order comes in 😉
I’d love a video on the xf18mmf2! I’ve been thinking of getting it for a long time.
It’s in the plans!
I kept going back and forth on which one I should get and after watching this I think I’m gonna go with the 10%!! Gonna be using it on my Sony a6700 with the Sony 35 1.8 oss so it should be fun!! Thanks you for this awesome video!!🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Ordered mine in late November at b&h ...still back ordered. But I’m looking forward:) thx for the video.
fantastic vid / info, great display as to how much bloom difference between the 10 & 20 ... do you use or like the Tiffen pro black filters and how do they compare?! (if you use them) thanks so much for this comparison 🙏🏼
Been shooting on the 10% w/ my xt2 and haven’t really taken it off. The filter + fujixweekly film sims is 💰 💰 💰 👌🏼
Which mm filter did you get for your xt2?
It all depends on which lens you’re using
Very informative. This camera is a must buy, also love the font used by chance can you mention what font you used?
As always, great work. I really am regretting getting the 20%. It just is a lot and every time I see folks with the 10, it just is such a good balance. At least for my taste.
Yeah the 20% is really stylized
As an owner of the 20% cinebloom, I also regret not getting the 10%. For both photos and videos taken with the 20% attached, I’m left underwhelmed when going through them after a shoot. Mostly with video. Too milky looking across the whole frame for me. Far too soft. Plus the effect becomes way too pronounced at longer focal lengths. The RAW photos, on the other hand, can be edited to a larger degree to bring them into line with what I had envisioned
back in the day, we made our own.
Using UV filters with hairspray on them...or old stockings/tights stretched over them and secured.....
May try doing that again to see how it works on my 100s
Wow! I like the 10% B&W photo portraits. Though I see exterior shots with the 20% look good. Now I just have to figure out which of my lenses I'd use with this filter. Thank you.
im just gonna get the largest filter thread and get a set of step up/down rings from amazon for like $25
Dumb question, are the thread mm sizes the same on both sides to add a VND to the Moment CineBloomers?
When you were offering the filters up to the camera, it reminded me of going to my optician when I’m trying to read the chart...”So what one is better, number one or number two? One or two? “. People who wear glasses will get this 😆
The filters looked interesting
Hahahahah
Can I ask a perhaps silly comment: so will these make it so that manual focus is a must?
Just sold my Fuji xt1 and looking to get another one. No certain one I’m set on, but I wanted to know what Fuji do you think is the best?
Not new at all, they used to be called Pro-Mist filters by Tiffen, I still have the Warm Pro-Mist 2, and the Warm Black Pro-Mist somewhere in my stuff from years past. Good filters to have, so I can see why these Moment filters are seeing the hype, and a resurgence in that type of filters to use.
I prefer the Tiffen Pro Mist to the Moment, but I prefer my DIY with a cheap UV filter and hairspray to both.
Bought the 10% cinebloom but My hairspray diy filter still makes a decent job!
Is this the same thing Hitchcock used in Vertigo? I would love to be able to recreate that. BTW is there a way of recreating this in post? Video and photo.
So just like Black Pro Mist but another brand ? Are they at least cheaper?
Awesome video! I wonder how the Cinebloom compares to the Black Pro Mist
I had a pro mist 2 and it was waaaaayyy too strong. I’m sticking with the 10%
If a subject is standing in between let’s say, a practical light and the camera with the cinebloom, with no additional key light hitting the subject, does that filter still soften the subjects skin etc.?
Tldr, do a key light need to physical hit the filter in order to “soften” a person’s face? Thanks in advance if anyone tested/knows 🙃
Hey, do you need the weather sealing filter adapter to screw on the cinebloom ?
You need some sort of an adapter, yes
I wish that 49mm would be available to buy 😧 sold out and on back order for weeks now. Everywhere 😩
I’m not too sure about these. I have a Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4 basically glued to my X100V and it gives a similar effect to the 10% but retains contrast too which is nice. I guess it depends on the look you’re going for.
I was about to say the same. The BPM 1/4 keeps the contrast, the moment filter feel too wash out
Hey Ben, do you need an extension ring to attach the 49mm cinebloom on your X100V?
Yes. You will need a spacer/adapter to mount any filter to the X100 cameras.
How to get rid of ghosting effect when using these filters?
When covid clears, you should take it to Dorky's and get some shots of the old arcade machines!
You don't use to take pictures during the day? :D
It would be nice to see it with sun light
What size did you buy for the x100v? I'm ordering it for myself for Christmas and I already have the 67mm and 77mm one for my other lenses but which size fits the x100v?
I believe those are 49mm
The moment filters are fine and all, but I'd recommend a Tiffen Black Pro Mist instead. The 1/4 filter is about par with the 10% Cinebloom, but just has better halation. Also easier to find.
You prefer 1/4 vs 1/8 Tiffen?
@@elliotresnick5433 I use both, but generally reach for the 1/4 first.
What do you think about using the 10% Cinebloom or Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 1/8 on Tri-X?
Ah would be pretty cool, definitely a vintage look
Hey Benj, I noticed you use Squarehoods (in your other videos). Does your Squarehood fit with the filter attached?
No 😭
@@benjhaisch nooooooooooo. I have a third party Amazon one (not squarehood.se) one and I’m running into the same issue :(. I’m thinking of shaving a bit of the bezel off.
I’ve considered it too...
@@benjhaisch for the record, I have a tiffen black promist too... that *does* fit
Dude, I wonder if you use these filters in any of your work? I’m still tempted, but getting anything from moment in Europe is basically paying double for shipping and taxes, so waiting until I get on your side of the ocean!
I haven't yet for the most part. I'd really only do it for more "creative" types of shoots, but I've been keeping the 5% on my X100V just for family stuff and it's a nice bit softness
I have both...i use the 10% on my X100v almost all the time.
Great Video. Is there a technique for avoiding reflections when using diffusion filters? They can be scene at the 4:39 (the yellow blob to the left of the street light) & 5:15 ( the line along the right side of the building) .
oddly enough the yellow blob at 4:39 was with no filter at all.
@@benjhaisch Doh! Thats what I get for scrubbing through
My Rf 15-35 only shows reflections with the Black Pro Mist. I try to tilt the lens to move the reflections into the halation the light sources.
As a Canadian I had to pay $96 for each 😂
I've always wondered how the x100v performs in low light as an everyday camera especially it being an apsc sensor
These are all at 6400 iso, 12800 is passable for personal stuff, but I’d try to avoid it unless you’re in a pinch
@@benjhaisch thank you for the response 🙏
@@liamdaniel8142 I have the X100F and owned the S before. Always found that the camera was not great in low light. Especially compared to a fullframe camera and fast lens. Not likely that aspc will (ever) be able to compete with ff in this domain. In many other domains X100 series is a winner: price, portability, color, fun factor, usability,...
@@yvesblieck6105 much appreciated with the honesty
Im confused. Couldnt you get the same effect with some simple post production editing?
not that I'm aware of that blooms the highlights so naturally
Do you shoot raw or jpeg mostly with the x100?
Usually RAW+JPEG but I actually rarely use the JPEGS
@@benjhaisch good to know, thanks
What's old is new again Benj...for years we spent thousands of dollars on Hasselblad/Zeiss lenses for our 500 Series cameras. Then we used cheap Cokin drop-in diffusion filters and matte boxes to apply a vignette, thus making custom negatives, rather than pay the lab to make custom prints and retouch. Standard practice in the portrait and wedding world. Hilarious in hindsight as Zeiss was working so hard to give us sharp lenses that didn't vignette.
Haha for sure. It all comes back around at some point.
Perfect.... glad I ordered the 10%... 20% is way too much.
same here
@@catostieve3532 just got mine yesterday. Looks nice! @werosenetwork on IG. Have some before and after in my last post and some on my story
Is this compatible with the Fuji XE4?
Yep! Just have to find the filter size of your lens
or just just set off-set exposure too +2 in Photoshop. same thing as off-set exposure in bridge, lightroom @ photoshop. great insight though
Use them on m lens would you?
Sure!
This filters with a CineStill film recipe
yea the 20% is definetely for the night.
Idk, didnt look harsh or digital without filter to me. The filters seem to benefit only in specific scenes.
the 5% is the one I've really landed on
I Pre-ordered the 20% in December, I will get it maybe March 31st. 😔
Yeah same, it's stupidly long tbh
does it fit with squarehood?
It doesn’t fit 🥲 I think the filter itself is a little too thick, sadly.
Unfortunately not, the outer diameter is just a bit too big and the lens hood does not fit over it.
@@benjhaisch Thank you anyway
The moment Moment starts to make diffusion filters you know it's time to give it up :)
Why?
The price are very crazy here in India.
Hey you. Yes you. random person that I will never meet. I truly hope that you will find happiness in life. Today is going to be a great day !
I love your channel Lloy Smith :)
Thank you I found true happiness Jesus(,: God bless you!
Could you do a video using x100v?
What do you mean?
@@benjhaisch Using the x100v as a video camera. Making youtube videos with it, problems with heating, any differences in image quality, and overall experience of using x100v to shoot video, etc. Thanks!
Gotcha :)
Camera trends always changing. First people complain about not enough sharpness in lenses. Others against filters totally, even good clear filters. Now people throw diffusion filters on.
Tbh it’s not an issue with the lens as much as the format for me at least. Digital sensors have such a rigidity that film doesn’t, so adding small amounts of diffusion via filters can help offset that a bit.
Damm the ghosting is worse then the iphone!
you arent really compensatiing for the exposure for the 20% bloom. iso is too high.
nope, they should all be at the same settings to show the effect on the image
@@benjhaisch i guess, but the highlights get severely blown out on the 20%
It's a greasy fingers filter.
😂
@@benjhaisch yesterday I used my phone camera and the lens was greasy. I thought to myself this looks like Cinebloom until my phone gave me a warning "CAMERA LENS SEEMS DIRTY. YOU MIGHT WANT TO WIPE IT" :-D
Cheaper way to get this effect is just rub a finger behind your ears and then smudge it on the lens.
Classic or Vaseline
20% is way too much!
Do not buy from Moment if you need your gear in a timely manner. I paid for one of these filters on Monday. Well it’s Thursday and the filter still hasn’t even been shipped yet lol. Worse part is I payed for 2 day fedex shipping lol 🤦🏻♂️
Lol. If you want a softer feel just shoot with the x100f.
you say « kind of » a lot don’t know if anyone has told you
Personally I hate them. Makes it look like your lens is dirty. Just try rubbing a big fat fingerprint on the lens and save the money if you really like the look. No really I get it that this is art and if these help you achieve the results you desire then they are a great tool.
