Zak Wolf Rants Again about PBS's Copyright Tirades!

  • You've probably noticed that PBS Distribution went on another one of their copyright claim tirades and blocked a good chunk of my "Arthur" UA-cam Poops, even some of their classics! So of course I do another rant about this as Zak Wolf, along with my status on making new YTPs.
You can see the blocked YTPs HERE:

The fact that even PBS is being stingy with copyright is a bad sign

0:47 WHAT?! Not "Binky's Widdle Night Fwight" too! That was one of my most favorites!
And curse them for doing the same to the 1000th video one.

Zak Wolf, looks like you have to make a GoAnimate Video similar to the Caillou one when his hit video was blocked.

This is bad news for Matt Neff of "FU DW" fame. He's become one of my new favorite reviewers because of his many series where he rants on infamous cartoon episodes (besides FU DW, there's also FU Caillou, It's Just a Cartoon, and Angelica Can Eat it). His videos have been copyright claimed by PBS before.
UA-cam seriously has a problem with their "For Kids" policy, since adult shows like South Park, Family Guy, Robot Chicken, and MAD TV (1995) have all been falsely been marked as being "For Kids" simply because they feature family-friendly characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Mario, Sesame Street, and Disney characters. Never mind that these videos feature mature humor and themes like drugs, crimes, sex, and brutal injuries/deaths.

I loved your Arthur YTPs. They were so funny and well-done! PBS really appears to be coming down hard on Arthur content; whole episodes that had been uploaded years ago have now been blocked.

Yeah. They're largely doing this to block the actual episodes, but end up also blocking YTPs and mash-ups in the process.

I swear PBS Distribution has one of the worst copyright systems to date.
I find it real funny that it took them 15 YEARS, yeah that's right 15 YEARS to start taking down Arthur-related content, wether it is fair use or not. For example, I've seen many Arthur YTPs and Episodes that were uploaded way back in 2008-2009 , get taken down NOW because PBS all of a sudden became a little stingy over a 28 year old show in the past two years.
It seems like PBS is following Viacom's ways, heck, even Viacom does slighty better than PBS when it comes to managing copyright. Thanks to this, now many Arthur dubs and poops have become lost media. You guys never heard of Fair Use? I think they should read basic copyright rules before abusing UA-cam's copyright takedown system.

I remember in my early videos from around 2014 PBS too would copyright claim one of my videos just for showing a few seconds of the Season 11 episodes of Arthur like: Swept Away and Germophobia I believe. And then I remember they put ads on my videos without my permission and it's bullshit UA-cam is ok with this and allows it, and it wasn't even a full episode it was only seconds!

Doesn't PBS stand for PUBLIC Broadcasting Service? To serve the public as a nonprofit organization unlike the corporate commercial broadcasters? Why would they have a problem with comedic remixes of their work or anything covered by Fair Use? They should honestly know better but maybe they have gone all corporate because Viewers Like Us aren't giving enough (because we're struggling too), plus with the government being mostly right-wing for the past decade has probably affected their funding as well. ☹ Plus with the Overton window shifting right maybe PBS has too... I'd hate to think that but welcome to the 21st Century aka Hell. I'm so sorry about all this. 😢

Hopefully Disney doesn’t block your Disney YTP videos like Disney Buys Out Hanna-Barbera and Basil’s Craziest Case.
Reckon PBS would possibly lobby for copyright extensions in the future given how they’ve been blocking Arthur YTPs? I made a bit of an error when I told you about what will be public domain for 1978 and later works. It’s corporate authorship works that enter the public domain in the US after the end of their 95th year while individual authorship works from 1978 onwards enter public domain 70 years after the author’s death. So when the first season of Arthur enters public domain in the US in 2092, the first Arthur book, Arthur’s Nose would also be in public domain since 2072 but the post-1977 Arthur books would still be under copyright as even though Marc Brown would most probably be gone by 2092, given the oldest a human being has ever gotten to was 122, the 70 year period after his passing probably wouldn’t be up by then. If you live to 100 in 2088, Zak, assuming no further copyright extensions, all 1977 and earlier works would be in the public domain, all 1978 and later individual authorship works by authors who passed away 2017 or earlier and all corporate authorship works from 1978-1992 would be considered public domain in the US. If there’s any more copyright extensions between now and 2088, I bet the nicknames would be something like the Snow White Protection Act or the Arthur Read Protection Act.

What made PBS suddenly come down so hard is how financially strapped they have become now. You may have noticed your local station spends exactly half the year fundraising. That's also why PBS mainstays like Sesame Street have had to ink deals with new program sources. Yes, some states have defunded their PBS but government (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) is about 5% of what they receive as a whole entity. They've been sharply dropping for about the past 15 years because people can watch the kind of content they post elsewhere--AND they can do so without a pledge drive or fundraiser interrupting what they're enjoying!
