I USE THE BAOFENG BF-F8HP. A 8 WATT RADIO, IN MIDTOWN MANHATTAN. ITS ON ALL DAY. I CHARGE IT TWICE A WEEK. $62.00 EACH. JUST REMEMBER THAT YOU WILL NEED TO PROGRAM THE FREQUENCIES IN TO IT.

I know this is 6 years old but I just did some battery comparisons this weekend on the Midland GXT1000 VP4 and the low cost Midland LXT114 handheld radio. The X-TALKER Series are high quality radios but on their most powerful model, is pushing only about two watts on high power and 0.5 watts on low power. On the LXT Models without transmitting only 4 times for 5 seconds, the DOLLAR TREE cheap alkaline AA Batteries lasted 12 hours before the radio beeped the low battery warning. The box said the range was 18 miles. I guess from mountain top to mountain top, you might get 8 miles. My friend was able to talk to me from her living room exactly 1 mile away on the LXT114 with me on my GXT1000 VP4 with 5Watts output and it was clear. With alkalines in the GXT1000 I was able to last 14 hours with a half dozen transmits of less than 10 seconds. With the Midland rechargeable 6 volt battery, I was able to last 6 hours with a half dozen transmitting sessions of about 10 seconds. The radios kicked down to low power as the battery drained. It would transmit on low power and medium power for a long time. The high end X-TALKER costs as much if not more than the GXT1000 VP4. The GXT1000 puts out 5 Watts on high power and I talk all over my city with two of these and the mxt105 &115 that I have in my cars and these work great. For distance, buy the GXT1000 VP4. In my opinion, these are the best FRS & GMRS out there for the money.

Most of these radios can't recharge batteries unless there wired correctly. The battery packs have only 2 exposed terminals.
I do like these little radios, and there now reclassified as FRS radios as of 2018.
