    I have lived in Frederick since 1988, both in the city and just outside the city. I now live in an older community on the east side of Frederick. Yes my city taxes are higher, but I don’t have the cost of an HOA as I did in a newer development just outside the city. Inside the city has HOA’s also, and I just don’t understand why., except for condos. The best thing about where I live is the walkability. Most anything I need is within walking distance. I’m retired, so I rarely use my car. I love your channel.

    Overdevelopment in Frederick has been growing for 30 years and will not stop. I lived there for 6 years and loved it but could not afford a house there even 20 years ago. I live in Sharpsburg now, but still miss Frederick!

    I have lived in Frederick since 2008. Downtown in the historic district. The only thing that is bad living here is dealing with the historic district commission if you live in that sector of town.
    My commute though is annoying and it would obviously be better if there was a better hub for public transportation between here and DC and Baltimore.

    Someone born and raised here: The development is awful, makes me want to move away frequently, but despite how expensive it is to live here, it's even more expensive to pack up and leave, especially when you're already settled with a career. That's why all of our transplants tend to be those on the more wealthy side of the spectrum. It's not a good look.

    I live in Arlington, VA now, but I grew up in Frederick, was there until I was 18 before I left for the military. Frederick was the best place to grow up. I come back often to visit and it's still an amazing city.

    I live just past the warehouse and medical park you showed. The city has been creeping towards us in the last decade. I have no problem with redeveloping downtown and the run down strip malls, but they need to stop the urban sprawl. We don't have the infrastructure for it

      I haven't seen too many new projects turned down by the planning commission lately either. I predict this will continue for a while.

      Walkersville has added 6 new developments since 2018 and 8 since 2010. They just approved new rezoning on the Staley farm on Glade road to add additional 60 townhouse to the 20 that are already there. Just keep your memories close because Frederick is not the same anymore. The friendliness you remember and the Appalachian culture of looking out for another has long since gone with all the new people. It’s a very me first outta of my selfishness now. Frederick County is turning into a giant overcrowded suburbia. I really miss the old Frederick but like you my wife and I will be moving as the culture and city just aren’t the same anymore.

    I'd give anything to be able to move back to Frederick. I had to move to Hagerstown after my husband died and it's horrible. Yes, it's a place having growing pains. That's WAY better than dying on the vine 20 miles up the highway.

    I live in Frederick but will move back to Montgomery county this year. Rents have gone up in Frederick so the are about the same as Mongomery. The problem here is that the population exceeds the infrastructure. Five highways cross Fredrick. I have had two accidents here, the first of my 76 years from trucks drifting into my land, my swerving and hitting the curb. I never see anyone pulled over for speeding, which happens all the time. In Montgomery county the population has not changed much and the existing roads handle the traffic. Retired people avoid driving on 270 during rush hour. If you have children, the schools are becoming very crowded. Montgomery county has class A schools with a great deal of support for children who need extra help. Not Frederick schools. They are at this point overwhelmed. Montgomery county has great recreation facilities with many pools that off programs for seniors like exercise classes and water aerobics. There are all kinds of trails and some are groomed for easy walking and there are a lot of options. Movie theaters in Montgomery county show lesser known pictures while the ones in Frederick stick to the basics. Just try to drive north of Frederick on 15! There was even a plan to add 250 houses in a small town on 15. People said no way. Are you crazy.? This road is stop and go almost all of the time, seven days a week. There is no plan to address this problem. So, Frederick is not planning for the growth it is experiencing. I have no idea what they spend the higher tax income on. Not police giving out tickets, which I have never seen here, ever. Not plans to deal with 15. Read the report about student achievement last year. Are there plans to build several new schools? Builders are making money like mad here, so someone is getting rich, but their plans do not require new developments to contribute to the schools and roads. So, live in one of the outlying communities and become involved in their long-range planning. I used to joke that Montgomery county was perhaps over planned, but now I appreciate it.

    I grew up in Frederick, and while I loved it there for a long time, it's losing its touch. There's so much development and many of my favorite spots are gone. I loved going to the Holiday Cinemas, the cheap theater that played movies weeks after its release. It was the first place I worked at, actually. But it closed down because of minimum wage, and a used car lot was put in its place. As if we didn't have enough of those?

    I live in the city of Frederick & drive I-270 in the mornings. The biggest problem with it it that the Governor and the county executive refuses to widen the northern half of I-270.

    • @movingtomaryland
      @movingtomaryland  6 місяців тому

      That section absolutely needs to be widened. Thanks for sharing your insight as a local!

      @@movingtomaryland I commuted on I-270 for over 25 years. I know how bad it is (well, was -- it's worse now) and there was a time when I would have agreed that 270 should be widened. The problem is "induced demand. It has been shown all across America that when highways are widened, residential sprawl increases and the congestion quickly becomes as bad as it ever was -- or worse. The only way 270 should be widened is if there is an absolute ban on residential construction, in perpetuity, in FredCo. Otherwise, we'll just end up with a wider linear parking lot -- and no more right-of-way. Then what? BTW -- good video. Well done.

    Odd. No mention of Ft. Detrick and it's responsibility for Frederick's status as the top 5th Superfund site in the US. I would kinda think that drinking Frederick's water is and has been for over 50 years, a primary cause of the cancer cluster that earned the Superfund designation. The US Army Chemical Corp's presence at Ft. Detrick throughout the 50s, 60s, and 70s during and after the development of herbicidal weapons including the various 'agents' such as agents orange, white, purple, and green including spraying all designated areas within Detrick's: A, B, C, D, E, and F, and the resulting runoff into Frederick's water table, discussed for years after entire families died of identical tumors, should be known to Frederick residents who've been there any amount of time.

      Me too! The building is ridiculous. I've been here for 22 years and seeing it change has been astonishing. No longer affordable or quaint. The hospital has horrible wait times. There is not enough attention given to infrastructure. The roads are just clogged and not just at rush hour. As more people from other expensive counties continue to flock here this situation at some point needs to be addressed. Population will probably exceed 100k in 5 years.
