Australia: Sydney's Great Steam Train Race 2018

- The annual Great Steam Train race through Sydney's inner western suburbs.
The year it was Garratt 6029 against the recently restored "Nanny" 3526.
It was raining again this year. An unfortunate slowing of 3526 and train near Ashfield reduced the "racing" well before the scheduled finish at Strathfield.
Firstly, Its very rare to see an articulated engine in action. Secondly, I like how the diesel engine is at the back and not saddled just behind the engine like the americans. This is truly a beauty!
Thanks for your insights Francisco✨️
that Garratt is such an amazing machine. As it sped up at about 12:30 it was so apparent that it wasn't even breaking a sweat, and had tons more reserve power and speed to put to the rails. How nice to see one of these so unusual, and unique steam engines in such great shape, doing what it does best, speeding down the rails, not sitting on static display somewhere. Great on ya gentleman.
We were all looking forward to the Hunter Valley Great Train race this year when the Garratt was to go up against the newly restored 3801( after a very LONG time), unfortunately now cancelled.
@@video_mitch I live in the Newcastle area and was really looking forward to that but in a race between a 38 and a 60 over mainly flat ground, no prizes for guessing the winner. That said, the 60 is my fave loco of all time and I had a cab ride in this one back in 1980 or '81.
Absolutely splendid footage, being an old `trainspotter` from the UK in the 1950s, the ones we had were of a 2-6-6-2 formation and must admit never EVER seen them in such a sparkling condition, ours back then were used on the heavy coal trains in the East Midlands mainly between Toton and Brent yard in north London, unfortunately all ours were scrapped by 1957, it's a credit to the maintenance staff who look after these splendid locos.
A very well built British Steam loco!!
That whistle though That is just amazing it’s one of the most incredible things I’ve ever heard in my life
That was so reminds me of a movie that I cannot think of
Sorry auto correction
I love how it’s the Australians who do this, and then make it into something of a passenger service
It's a heritage charter
@@85dstudios nope that's deffo Australia can tell by the warth sets (apologies to any ausdie enthusiast I know I spelt it wrong)
@@85dstudios sorry buddy but she's Australian.
@@Steven_20031 And also the names of the stations chronologically, the design pattern of the suburbs beside the rail lines, the diesel locomotive that's pushing the train... everything indicates it's Australia. Infact I use this line at least three times a week 🙂
Makes me pound to be Australian
Fantastic great movie, have never seen this type of steam locomotive before. Unbelievable that you are allowed to drive side by side. Thumbs up from Denmark.
Glad you enjoyed it
So wonderful to see a Garratt operational. Great effort from all those who have worked to preserve her.
She’s not the only Ex- South African Garret left. The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland line in wales own 3 that are all operational
@@85dstudios she's Australian mate. This one was built in the UK then shipped out to Australia in the early 50s.
the whistle on that Garrett class loco is beautiful and I like it a lot.
FANTASTIC STEAM RACE TRAIN! THE 6029 IS SO STRANGE!
A Garratt! Never seen one in action before! Thank you so much 👏👏👏👏✌️
Our pleasure!
Fantastic images. High qualité filming, a Real story. A document. A lot if work too Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
I was delighted to bump into 6029 at Goulburn station in 2016 when visiting Australia, where I grew up long ago. I had no idea some of these magnificent beasts had been restored. There was a personal connection for me.
We used to have a railway cutting behind Gordon Public School in Sydney which mostly ran electric trains, but every now and then the rails would start ringing and we boys knew what was coming. Our third class teacher would start hurling his usual threats if we did not stay in our seats but it was no use. Suddenly great towers of steam would shoot out of the ground behind the school as the Garratt thundered past. Boys would jump up on their seats and stare out the window at this remarkable spectacle while the noise drowned out even Mr James's yelling. It was a rare and much appreciated interruption of the unrelenting tedium of school.
It's a little ironic that 6029 now pulls passenger cars since these locomotives were acquired to pull heavy coal trains over the mountains along the sharp curves and through the low tunnels from Lithgow. My only very minor criticism is that 6029 is just too showroom clean. Working Garratts were always covered in soot and grease. Diesels are far more efficient of course, but steam had real character and with its passing I feel we lost something. Same for steam marine engines - anyone whoever took the Dee Why to Manly would know what I mean.
Although you were at the mercy of the relative motion of the two trains you covered this really well Video Mitch. Thanks for the memory.
Glad you enjoyed! Very interesting point about 6029 being to clean, I had never thought about it that way. All preserved locos are cleaned to a very high shine now. We are very lucky to have so many locos preserved in operating order in NSW. Even 3801 is back and running, but unfortunately due to Covid, has not been able to haul a public train. This is slowly changing, with a few trips operating at the NSW Rail Museum & charters this coming weekend to Kiams (expensive, limited passengers)
@@video_mitch NSW is indeed fortunate to have so many beautiful steam locomotives (do they still run the Lithgow switchback?). Rarely seen these in action days up here in Canada, although they have a great railway museum near Montreal.
I wonder if anyone is making similar efforts in NSW to restore and promote steam ships? A triple expansion steam engine viewed from a void above like older Sydney ferries is also a sight to behold. Both are history in motion, not well understood by a handheld device generation but not likely to be forgotten once experienced directly. Thanks again for a great video.
Amazing video, felt like as if I was travelling, very magical moments. Steam engines are really fascinating for ever.
Thank you very much!
Excellent! Loved the little kid bouncing in his seat early in clip.
I love the sound of steam trains in the morning.
Went on many trips ,in the great Steam trains, out of Sydney, years ago, when they were all there was, and love them all today. What a massive part of history.
I have never seen a wonderful race like this before. It has shown how efficiency of first locomotive's technology moved by steam engine. Thanks everyone who still maintains privios Train Technology for this generation.
The whistle of that Garratt gives me chills...
you can wonder in amazement about the engineering of these amazing machines.........but nothing beats the look and oh that sound
It’s good to know that there are people in this day and age that have the knowledge and ability to keep these things alive
Love those Beyer Garratts!!! First thing I am going to do when I get to Australia will be to see them in person. What can you say about a nation that prizes their history and maintaining such beautiful examples of human technology....
Actually, W.A. tried them too with disasterous results. They put them on narrow gauge and then they couldn't handle the curves, resulting in the first and longest strike of engine drivers in the state refusing to drive them.
I live here and theres only 2 fixed Garratts, 6040 and 6029, 6040 is a static display in Thirlmere while 6029 is in Canberra and gets steamed up for special events
beutiful locos i want to see garratts so bad cause there are none here absolutly none
i am angry cause the Denver and rio grande western never used any and since most of their 3 foot gauge track had curves gentle enough for
2-8-2 mikados it should be albe to handle a garratt no problem
@@AustralianRailwayVideos It's now in Thirlmere not Canberra anymore as of 2016.
We need more Garratts!
There's just something that so majestic about steam loco's.... 🥰
The race is so wonderful, beautiful, amazing, exciting.
6029, one of the best looking Garetts, what a beautiful beast. Who needs F1 when you watch this!!!
I'm still wondering why this isn't a worldwide sport
Me too
They could do a World Cup sort of thing where it’s a tournament and each country has their own team
Whirlpools
Poverty? Non clean air? Who knows, these things require coal
Adam Chmielewski it’s just a fun concept, there’s no need to be a Debby Downer
A very unusually designed steam engine this is and I have never seen this kind before!
The front extension does not house a boiler but a separate pair of piston chambers exiting the exhausted steam and the tender houses underneath another set of flywheel extension. Traditional tenders do not have anything but two axles and wheels mounted on them.
This must be a fully restored steam engine and by the looks in this video is capable of 60MPH top speed! What an enjoyable and nostalgic ride this must have been!
Yes, it s really 2 steam locomotives fed off the one large boiler. It allows for a much more powerful engine operating on light rail lines. The front extension is a water tender.
Just to let everyone know that the Garrett 6029 in the video was owned, fully restored and operated by the A. C. T. railway historical society before being wound up in 2018 due to a lack of funds, the crest on the tender is from the A. C. T. The locomotive is actually stored at thIrlmere near Sydney
Outstanding capture! By far the best I’ve watched so far. Many thanks for the upload.👍👍
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it
I keep watching this. The sound of the steam whistle brings back many memories for me. It is music to my ears.
These magnificent engines were all originally built without using CAD, CAM, or any computers! Just engineers with brains, sliderulers, ingenuity, and the willingness to dream big and take a risk.
True craftsmen!
Rare steam engine parallel action. Wish they'd build modern engines that would look and sound as good as these steam engine beauties.
I know you realize this, but while steam can be as powerful as a diesel, it is vastly more maintenance intensive, requiring many, many more maintenance hours for every operational hour. Steam looks and sounds great; their design by Class is always interesting and often beautiful, but Steam just costs too much today for any viable freight or passenger service anywhere in the world. This one's a beauty, though.
I mean IMO a lot of high speed rail looks amazing, the original Shinkansen is probably the most beautiful piece of design from the latter half of the 20th century. And the truly cutting edge stuff from China and Japan looks amazing. They don't really make any sound but in a way no sound is the best sound, it obviously is if you're anyone that has to hear it often. I also like a lot of modern DMUs and I know that they aren't popular but I do think they're comparable to something like a Garratt, like you can hardly call a Garratt pretty but it's functional and rugged and that has a certain charm and I think modern passenger DMUs do the same.
bulldog cab design locomotives looks cool as steam locos
There’s something about steam engines absolutely fascinating thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
Un souvenir vivant de la belle époque où rien n'était facile mais tout était authentique ...la modestie et la générosité était la vrai richesse... la vie avait un goût...c'est le bonheur. Merci pour la vidéo.
What an enjoyable film. The first part from Central was very Film Noir with the steam and glimpses of the train. Great Camera work and what a fantastic opportunity to see the amazing Garrett .... thanks Video Mitch, this is a true historic document.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. I was initially going to some of the trip between Central & Redfern, but I liked the "atmosphere"
What a marvellous piece of human engineering!
Have been up close and personal a few times with 6029. Great giant that it is!! Love Garrets👍

Great filming! that was so good I really felt I was on the train! that Garrat is absolutely beautiful! thank god it was saved & it is here in Australia! it is a rare, valuable, historic operating time capsule for all of us to enjoy! by the way how the hell could anybody give this the thumbs down?????
Thanks! Yes, there is no pleasing some people.
*My word... it fascinates me to know how both men and women can be creative enough to build something as magnificent as the Garrett engine*
Lord DuckingTon Women?
I've read that H.W Garratt got the idea from rail guns. I've also read he got the idea from seeing a bogie well-wagon carrying a boiler being shunted in a yard somewhere. No idea which is true but if it's the latter, it wouldn't have taken too much imagination to turn that wagon into his locomotive.
What a beast. Great vid.
Love everything about steam loco,s, the sound, the smell of hot burning coal, watching them in action, fantastic!
One of the best rail videos 👍
Good job and great views. Best regards from Poland 🇵🇱
Garratts are cool looking steamers my favorites of this class are the ad60 class, the ear 59 class, the sar gl, and gmam, plus the Rhodesia railways 20th class and class 15a. 😊
My father drove 59 class EAR in Kenya. Till 1972.
What a nice whistle *** one if the 👍best ever. Great video ***
Thank you.

awesome. hats-off to the people who maintained and organized this event. Thanks for capturing and sharing this!
hi ,I would just like to say that I've enjoyed your amazing video on this great locomotive ,i not been Australia but that would be one of the first things i would do ,thank you for sharing .
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@@video_mitch There is a Garratt waiting to be restored at Paekakarki New Zealand.
Thank you Mitch for sharing your video as I wish that I could fly home from W.A. to see it for myself but I can't , so , this is why I'm glad that other people can share their videos on You Tube like you did , as for those people who don't like your video - could they do any better under the circumstances that you did , I think not ; Keep up your good work mate. :-)
My pleasure!
That loco is so cool! Built in Manchester, England, for the Australians. Looks like a mixture of UK, U.S and Oz. Love it.
Yes, I would have liked seeing them move it to the port & load it on the ship.
@@video_mitch same!
I have just read all comments but i can top the lot my grandfather and father drove the magnificent garret and 3801 .60 years ago i rode on the foot plate of of many steam engines with my dad out of eveleigh sheds. When i was a guard i worked the last steam train out of Enfield railway yard to morandoo ( Newcastle ) have many fond memories of the steam era .
Excellent video and a wonderful spectacle. The quality of the footage adds a lot to the feeling of 'being there'. I think the only Garratts we have in this country are on the narrow gauge Welsh Highland.
I think they were also very popular in South Africa. Australia also had a version to work on narrow (3ft 6in) gauge.
Magnificent, greetings from SA enthusiast. Here we have an ongoing battle to keep the few remaining of the what was largest collection of working steam in the world going through public participation.
Watching this on a cold wet UK Saturday is awesome! superb filming, some years ago i was the only guy taking photos at Sydney Central of the green streamliner, 3807?, superb sight!
3801, which will hopefully be back in service by mid 2019. It has been out of action for about 10 years.
Awesome. Thanks to share this video..

Nicely shot!
Manchester's finest.. great to see in action!
Excellent vid mate, in the 1960s i used to pass Beyer, Peacock and Company on my way to school, the main erecting shop is still in use by Manchester Corporation. I managed to sneak in some time in the 60s when they were building the Class 35 Hymeks. cheers Steve ..
We could get away with a lot in those days! Access was so easy in many ways. The Hymeks were diesel hydraulic? another design that didn't really catch on.
Yes i did a lot of shed bashing back then. The Hymeks were a good popular loco but when BR decided they were going to have diesel electrics only they had to go .They were building the class 17 Clayton's at the same time they were a complete cock up cheers Steve ..
the good ol AD60. good to know she was saved by private owners after canberra went belly up. atleast shes at thirlmere with her classmate 6040. the other 2 6039 and 6042 are at dorrigo and forbes respectively. would be lovely to see all 4 operational and in one place or potentially being used as union pacific does with its engines.
Don’t forget our 2’6” gauge Beyer Garrett on Melbournes “Puffing Billy Railway” G42, although I have to admit it’s not in the same league as this beautiful machine! But this film is just so good, absolutely riveting to watch, I have watched this video literally dozens of times over the period and I am in awe of the beautiful Garrett!
I heard that the Puffing Billy Garratt has just been "retired" for the time being
@@video_mitch a shame if if G42 is to be temporarily retired but lots of cost pressured currently.
They also run their South African Garratt so may have that in reserve if needed.
Fantastic , well done on such a difficult wet day.
Thanks. Luckily the camera survived!
Absolutely love NSWGR chime whistles.
OK! Just to clarify what you are watching, it's a 4-8-4 4-8-4 Garratt class AD60 supplied to South Australian Government. Basically it's an oversized boiler and firebox with a power unit articulated at either end. The made it possible to travel greater distances without having to take water( front tank) or fuel (rear) although many carried water in the rear as well it could negotiate sharp bends and low grade track. This one was the larges of many supplied to Australia with a tractive effort of 52700lbs.
Hi Chris, the loco was supplied to the New South Wales Government - it is a standard gauge loco. The Garratts in South Australia were narrow gauge (3ft 6in). My understanding was the the tractive effort is just under 60,000lb.
Great video!!
Just Fantastic , THANK YOU

That Garratt is a lovely locomotive.
Great Vid ! Thanks to share this video ! :)
Glad you enjoyed!
This makes me miss Australia so much they would not do anything like this in England Very well filmed felt that i was there.Thank you.
They do this all the time in England, there are so many videos on youtube of British steam excursions.
When you're in the UK, have you checked what's going on on the Continent? It seems once or twice a year there's some parallel running in Germany. Especially in the Eastern part - around Berlin - you might be lucky.
A trip to Germany or Poland to a dampfspektakel is worth doing - especially for the parallel running. Check out the many films on UA-cam using the words dampfspektakel or plandampf - hours of fun :)
Phil Weatherley - The UK is not 'overcrowded' at all. Maybe to those living in London but that isn't the UK. And you think Swanage is 'overcrowded'?
The railways are in no way 'underfunded ' either. What a load of crap!
* Hundreds of new trains worth £ Bns
* Thousands of new workers
* Hundreds of new srvices
* Ridership doubled since privatisation
* Two new train factories in the last few years to add to the expansion at Bambardier Derby
* A new High Speed Line (HS2) worth £45 Bn
* New electrification on GW Main Line (which has cost far more than it should due to dumbarsed EU regulations demanding new bridges and heights)
* Old lines being re-openend
* Network Rail being given the largest R & M budget ever for 2019 - 24
Whether its badly managed is a matter of opinion and some may think the actions of the militant unions RMT and ASLEF over DCO that has chopped hundreds of key commuter services for the last 2 years has had a bigger effect than even the massive cock up in the new May Timetable change.
And why bring in your Remoaner self righteous prejudice and mention bloody Brexit? Before you get all superior and call it 'suicidal stupidity' explain to our Australian friends why reducing trade barriers by the removal of the EU External Tariff and doing a Free Trade Deal with them when we leave is either 'suicidal' or 'stupid'. What was suicidal was staying inside a protectionist political Ponzi scheme that cost us £13 Bn a year for which we had a £100 Bn a year deficit in Goods trade, where 60% of our laws were made in a foreign land and while we were the second largest contributor we had no more say than bloody Malta. The EEC was a good idea and why I voted to remain in it in '75. But what was really 'stupid' was having the EU, a Socialist political dream, foisted on the UK without any vote 20 years ago. Once asked about THAT I voted out.. if you don't like it clear off to your EU Nirvana Land and stop slagging of your own country ...
Think of the Health and Safety assessment ....... the paperwork..........the public spectating........parallel running ..oh God no!
I travelled to Sydney to watch my wife compete on one of the U.S. teams in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. On her day off, my mother-in-law and I rode the 'Long Lunch' train pulled by one of the local steam locomotives and I am sorry to say that I cannot remember the number. When the crew found that I am steam-qualified in the United States they offered me a ride on the footplate. What a wonderful experience that was and I am most appreciative of how gracious everyone was to us. Australia really knew how to put on an Olympics.
WOW! Firstly how amazing for your wife to compete at the Olympics. I live very close to Olympic Park - It's a very different place now with a lot of residential apartments being built. I have not been able to find any details of which steam locomotive would have been used on your trip as yet. Most likely it is still running, as there has been some restorations going on in the last few years to allow the preserved locos to continue to run on then main line.
I remember seeing a Garratt go through Blacktown station in the 70's as a kid....
Fantastic 👍🏻
Beautiful video.
Thank you very much!
Very very nice video. Nice race. While in so many countries the steam engines have been discontinued in Australia these engines are still used. The race between these two trains is super it seems that I am also enjoying the race. Thanks
They are trotted out for special occasions, last official steam revenue service would have been by 1970 on most systems. The Queensland system was all diesel by the end of 1969.
Aussie Pom Thanks for the information. I would like to say that I am very much fond of steam engine. It runs with steam imination noice which is very attractive. Thanks sir.
wow! still using steam in 1973!! the year after I was born.
Great video Mitch!
Thanks! I was hoping it would have been a longer race!
Next year! I'll be there!
A race between a Gerratt Loco and an engine like UP 3985, UP4014, or the PRR T1 “Duplex” that’s being built by the T1 Trust would be cool as well.

In my school days (during 1960 ) I enjoyed the journey by train pulled by Garrett steam Engine ( called double engine ) in the hill- section line in N. F. Railway under Indian Railways from Lumding to Badarpur through the beautiful blue Borail Hills. Now a days the train is lead by B. G. Diesel Engine. The journey with all enchanting natural beauties of the blue hills will remain ever fresh in the memory of all travelling passengers. Nice and cool well restored and a rare design steam engine with enormous horses power.
I have seen some strange engines, but this one is very unique.
No ifs not! It's a beautiful Bayer Garratt articulated loco used for heavy haul freight on lines with hefty gradients and sharper than normal curves. It's nice to see some still in existence. Welsh Highland Railway has 3 all be it on 2' guage

Sorry, it was NewSouth Wales not South Australia ,, I blame predictive reading as I was typing as I read the spec and read the 4-8-2-2-8-4 of south Australia by mistake, a class 400
Congrats to the crews for a well managed 'yo yo' leadership....great fun for all.....and isn't it great to see a Garrat in it's stride....well done Mitch.
Many thanks!
Very nice video, specially this locomotive and cars. I enjoyed. Congratulation.

A Great video, captured from another steam locomotive. We should try this in the States.
That would be cool!
Queensland Rail Heritage Fleet management should look at this and hang their heads in shame, their beautiful Garrett is sitting in a shed on ‘static display’.
Hopefully one day she’ll be back out on the tracks.
The South Australian National rail museum, should likewise get their act together and restore to running condition some of the beautiful locos they too have on Static display.
Great Video Mitch.
I was a passenger on a train pulled by that Garrett to Toowoomba some years ago
a great trip, shame governments have no sentimentality, maybe we should treat
retired pollies the same, dump them in a shed and forget about them.
Ivan Olsen
What a splendid Idea!
Ivan Olsen
Why wait until they're retired?
EarlJohn, Too late, they have already reduced Australia to a
terminal economic condition, selling off every thing that
rightfully belongs to the Australian People, and leaving us
almost in poverty, then reducing our weekend pay rates.
Why they should be perpetualy rewarded for this is beyond me.
Due to the dog's breakfast of gauges in Australia (thanks NSW) there aren't many lines the narrow and broad gauge locos can run on.
