    I really love steam Locomotives they seem to have a personality, sound & smell. Being born in 51 close to Mortdale station I never got bored with them ...

    Nice compilation Mitch. Well done. Was on the inaugural 6029 trip from Goulburn to Thirlmere. Great loco. I do hope it's not sold for scrap.

    6029 is in limbo currently.
    Laid up out of service due to her owning body becoming insolvent.
    A great shame as she was restored to service only 3 years ago.
    The AD 60 class is both the largest and modernest of the Beyer- Garrett type locomotive. The last was great delivered to New South Wales railways in 1957

    Enjoyed your video, as ex steam fireman/driver in the UK it was much appreciated. Kind regards

      really ? excellent i have a question for you then .. why is it sometimes you see a steam train working hard and it have nay a whiff of barely visible smoke other times billowing clouds of white steam and other times still the blackest smoke this side of 17th century coalbrokedale ?

    • @firefox5926
      @firefox5926 4 роки тому

      4:37 i mean for example these 2 here ... i've seen semi trucks putting out more black smoke than these two

    • @firefox5926
      @firefox5926 4 роки тому

      5:47 like this here what just happened ? evidentiality they didn't just start using the "picturesque black smoke coal" right ? but all of a sudden boomf

      @gibbsey9579 2 роки тому

      @@firefox5926 The driver has just closed the regulator so there is less air being drawn through the fire, so less air means more smoke.

    • @gibbsey9579
      @gibbsey9579 2 роки тому

      @@firefox5926 They have a good fire that is well alight, soon the fireman will need to start shovelling coal and they will smoke. In a perfect world they will emit a grey smoke.

    They are effectively 2 Loco's under one large Boiler with one crew. if the UK opperators had bought from Bayer Garret the designers and not tried to influence them then I think a lot more would have been used

    The Garratts are truly fascinating! We never used these in North America to my knowledge.

      Not required! An innovative way of fitting a larger/more powerful engine within a small loading gauge. A North American one could have been huge!

    This is some fine looking locomotives. Are they still running today. I would do anything just to get that smell and to listen to that sound again. Born in 1967 but we had a railway line in Kensington Cape Town just 20 meters from our home. That was the line that ran into the military base called Wingfield.

    9:27 The diesel at the rear of the train, is to power electronic power and extra support through the hills.

    • @video_mitch
      @video_mitch  7 років тому +1

      The train was operating in the Sydney suburbs between regular services. The diesel hauled the train back to Sydney Central after a very fast turn-round.

    So they are Garretts?? I think that the Victoria Falls Railroad in South Africa or in Zimbabwe may be the only two places in the world where Garretts are still running on a daily basis. What a beast. Would like to see one in the US along side the Big Boy 4414 the UP is restoring. It would be so cool to see a foreign, design built locomotive like a Garrett on American rails.

    • @video_mitch
      @video_mitch  7 років тому

      Yes, built by Beyer-Peacock, in the UK in 1954. Australia also built a design for narrow gauge (3ft6in) - the Australian Standard Garratt.

    • @bigkiwimike
      @bigkiwimike 7 років тому +1

      3RTracing Take the garratt to the USA? It wouldn't be the first time a preserved loco has done it. That idea is so "out there" it's brilliant. Would certainly be a sight to see.
