- Another awesome Railpac Video! Join us as we go in-depth with the Iowa Traction Railway. We'll discuss the history of this unique railroad, America's last electric, freight hauling, interurban. Follow along with the daily operations as the crew services customers along the line, take a look at equipment in the carbarn, and finally, climb aboard with the crew as the motorman skillfully operates a 100 year old Baldwin-Westinghouse steeple cab locomotive.

This is the most complete and informative video I've seen about the Iowa Traction Railroad. Thank you for producing it.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
This is so cool since I just got to see this railroad in May passing through mason city and clear lake but it was the weekend and they weren’t operating but I got plenty of photos. I guess they are louder than I thought they would be too.
This is such a beautiful little railroad. I just love it.
Ive seen those traction locomotives a lot very unique in design
Funny thing is they were common as dirt.... in the 1920s. Completely unique today because unlike all the others that have been scrapped or sent to museums, these are still earning a living.
The horn on that locomotive sounds like a party favor
Another cracking video of a great electric line. I’ve been following this track on Google earth. I own an 0-4-0 steeple cab loco here in the uk but there is no overhead at the museum line where it lives. This is a wonderful survivor. Thanks for recording it.
This railroad missed the opportunity to purchase fright locomotives from the Chicago Aurora and Elgin when their freight service quit on June 9 1959. The could have purchased locomotives 4005 and 4006 which only needed bad flanges replaced. 4005 and 4006 together were capable of hauling 10 to 15 fully loaded freight cars.
At the time those locomotives might’ve required more power, and at the time might’ve not been able to afford additional locomotives. That’s just my guess tho
Thanks for visiting my town!
Mason City is a neat place! I just wish Bennigan's up the road in Clear Lake was open for more than dinner!
This is like reminiscent of freight operations on the Chicago Aurora and Elgin.
Incredible railroad. Long may it survive.
Great video. Just visited last month. You captured it perfectly. Nice job!
Great little documentary on a very interesting electric railway.
Thanks for watching!
The Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee trolley shown was used in trolley trains from Milwaukee to Chicago and went to the Loop via the North Side L using exposed 3rd rail like the Chicago L trains from a connection several miles north of the Loop.
i actually live in mason city and get to see these trains in person all the time
Subbed from Edmonton Canada. Excellent content.
Thanks! Hopefully you enjoy what's to come!
Color scheme reminds me of the old Chicago South Shore Line; another electrified railroad (now largely dieselized...)
30:30 with no prime mover its amazing how you can hear the brakes set
The in-cab views were great! I figured they'd be a little basic but sheesh, there is not much going on inside there! I guess no engine to worry about, it's just F or R and how much of it.
Simple to run and operate, DC needs to look at this for Electric power.
Awesome.....newbie from WV!
Thanks and welcome!
The old soybean plant, Hwy 106.
is that red signal at 27:30 protecting the UP line?
You are correct! That is the governing signal that protects the UP diamond.
So cool
The old ICE interchange.
Is the old State Brand Cremery part of AGP.
A good video, and very thorough. In fact I'd say it's a bit too thorough. It could really be 1/2 or even 1/3 as long. The long shots of trains slowly approaching, or crews standing around, are just a bit much in my opinion. I'd be interested in hearing more about the facilities, like their electrical supply/substation, what it's like operating and working on these little locomotives, any particular struggles they have with traffic, track maintenance, etc. It wouldn't even need to necessarily require interviews, just more narration. In either case, still a fun and fascinating watch. I'm glad they're still around.
Live thr cab ride and interior tour. Is that the resistor grids in the cage in the middle of the cab? Is there more switch gear in there?
Thanks for watching! As far as I know, the cage houses all the important guts like resistors and switch gear. Admittedly I'm more knowledgeable about diesels though.
I think it would be possible for IOWA TERMINAL to order electric locomotives from GE.
Oh wait, Biden is in charge.
Im trying not to be a hater but i just cant stand that horn
wait do you know about the norristown highspeed line? or the south shore line?
Sure, what about them?
@@Socoolds455 you said this was the last interurban...
@@emperor192 This is the last electric freight hauling interurban. Although South Shore has freight business, it's all diesel powered. IATR is the last "interurban" in the US hauling freight with electric locomotives on a daily basis.
@@Socoolds455 oh ok i thought thats what you meant but i wasnt sure.
@@emperor192 No worries!
