    So I have a Daniel Defense DDM4V5 and I purchased it four years ago. The rifle has about ten thousand rounds through it. I'm able to shoot quite a bit because I have 25acres in southern Ohio and I built a small range on it equipped with several AR-500 targets. Nevertheless after watching this video I went and looked at the firing pin in my DD and it has the exact same kind of cratering on the tip as seen in this video. The cratering on mine is a little bit more center but under magnification it looks almost identical to what this video showed. I wish I could send you a photo or hell even the pin just so you could show students or your UA-cam audience. With all that said I ordered a new one from Brownells.

      He mentioned what you’re asking in another video. I can’t remember which one exactly, but I think it’s the one titled why I gauge the AR so much. He modified his headspace gauge somehow so he wouldn’t have to further disassemble a customer’s rifle and possibly cause a warranty issue for the owner. He has dimensions for his modified tools he uses, but you have to take one of his classes to get the tech specs. Hope this helps.

    • @jwilsonhandmadeknives2760
      @jwilsonhandmadeknives2760 3 роки тому

      that is necessary when setting headspace, like replacing a barrel on a bolt rifle. Checking headspace on a floating bolt just ensures it won’t close on an oversized gauge.

    • @SchooloftheAmericanRifle
      @SchooloftheAmericanRifle  3 роки тому +6

      It depends on too many variables to give a hard number. These things can have an effect on bolt life: - ammunition used - gas system length - gas port size - gas system efficiency - carrier & bolt dimensions - bolt material & finish - upper receiver trueness - throat & headspace and so on.
      Some bolts can go 2-3x the round count you have on yours but some don't.
      If you do consistent visual inspections of the bolt, and check headspace occasionally you are better off than following a round count regiment.

Got it home to clean it for first time, - CAM PIN in BCG won't come out unless I pry it out with a screwdriver. Like the sqr nut head on the pin too big. I can see why he replace his cam pin. I think I may have gotten the same screw up group of cam pins from Daniel Defense. I cleaned it and went out and shot a few more hundred rounds without incident. CAM PIN sqr head on small sides may just have to be filed a little bit.

      CB Yes. I was wondering if chrome had problems like nickel boron does where the coating interferes with the carrier keys threading becoming to thick for the screws. Or like the nitrided bcg’s being oversized in the gas runs making them less gas efficient. The types of tendencies in manufacturing problems like those must be in the chrome bcgs as well. I just don’t know what they might be.

    I REALLY WANT TO ,,I MEAN I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT TO BECOME A GUNSMITH ,HAVE WANTED TO SINCE 1985 ,DONE TWO other trades and retired from them both,and now 50 yrs old ,single ,financial,and hoping to be able to live work learn in the greatest,free country of the world,covid has somewhat tossed a few spanners in the works for now but hopefully soon my plans can resume ,your a hell of a gunsmith ,i wanted your opinion of the online gunsmithing schools like S.D.I and if i was able to get some course/s prior to arriving uf it would help me find work within the industry?i had plenty of rifles and used guns for mostly hunting and plinking until tge government stole them from us with mandatory buy backs after the Port Arthur massacre back in the nineties,and where i live the government has made it so exspencive,with licencing and permits and just the way you can use guns out of every day middle class Australians income,its sort of there more for the rich and exclusive and people high up the politically incorrect ladder.any advice us great.thankyou

    Is there a point to changing a cam pin ?

    • @OtisFlint
      @OtisFlint 4 роки тому +1

      Its one of the highest wear components, so after 7K the first one was probably showing some wear.

    • @americanmilitiaman88
      @americanmilitiaman88 4 роки тому +1

      Best to change parts at first signs of wear then wait till they break. Every 2 years i replace cam pin and gas rings and o ring /extractor.

    A lot of things in these videos seem to be extremely overly picky, such as the very small dimple on the firing pin. "I'll discuss with the owner and he can decide how to handle it." If it is really an issue, why discuss with the owner? Just replace the $5 part and move on.

    • @floivanus
      @floivanus 4 роки тому +6

      “Just replace the $5 part”
      So you want a business to spend a customer’s money without asking them? Maybe the customer doesn’t want to spend extra money, they might even have a pile of spares themselves.
