    It's a nice change of pace to get some world-crafting guidance that is not just about logistics. A focus on culture will definitely lead to a richer world. I guess the main challenge to including myths, fables, epics etc. is to avoid the delivery feeling forced. Thought-provoking. Thank you Just In Time Worlds!

      My advice is stories told in taverns :) Or if you're up to poetry and songs, those.

    I think an important factor, especially with creation myths, is whether or not they are actually true. After all they are stories about entities (i.e. gods) that often empirically exist in fantasy worlds so why wouldn’t they be factually accurate stories? Perhaps the sun god really does travel through the sky in a boat during the day and descends to the underworld to fight monsters at night.

      This is so true especially in a fantasy setting. In fantasy, myths could also have more than just a grain of truth, beyond what would be true in our world.

    Very interesting video! I'm always amazed at the worldbuilding process and how deep it can get.

      I’ll keep doing some myth based shorts, they’ll at least give you a passing knowledge of what’s in the myth :)

    As a musician, actor, general fine arts educator, and former dancer, I have actively sought ways to incorporate the arts into my D&D characters & campaigns. A recent triumph is my Drow priestess of Eilistraee, a Sword Dancer, to be sure, but I built her as a Bard. While she does play several instruments, she also uses oratory, singing, dancing, and acrobatics as verbal & somatic components for her spells, for which she often improvises relevant, short poems to use with each casting. Her parents are Lore Masters living in quiet exile in a remote place in the Upper Dark, and they prepared her for their career, so she has the Sage background & uses a scholarly approach to learning, studying, teaching, and performing. I’ve gone so far as to create a set of 18 standard forms that Eilistraee’s priestesses use to prepare to learn the Sword Dance, and I intend that this Dark Maiden will write the book some day, but I’ve not yet fleshed them out in great detail. Nonetheless, simply having this pattern of “Recitals” & “Arias” planned out aids my role playing & enables me to focus upon playing her as an authentic artist.

      Sometimes you don't need to go deep on the world building, just having the broad understanding of what you're aiming at is enough.

    I may well be remembering wrong, it has been a few decades, but I am certain, the Scorpion in Lot5R asked a Lion for piggyback over the river, not a frog.
    I love the little stories in the Scorpion clanbook (1st edition) in which a Scorpion visits the other clan animals in turn and always ends with "and the [insert clan animal here] had nothing more to say." Scorpions were my favorite clan.

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds  Рік тому +1

      The story is definitely a frog. l5r.fandom.com/wiki/Tale_of_the_Scorpion_and_the_Frog
      I also loved those stories :D I enjoyed the Scorpion very much, but my favorite will always be the Dragon clan.

      @@JustInTimeWorlds Dragon is my second most favorite Clan, but I always loved ninja and always will, even after all the demystifying the ninja myth I have read and watched documentaries on. In L5R, I always played Soshi family or Shosuro family. In the tabletop wargame Clan Wars, I always played Dragon clan

    There was an few panels were batman and the joker where fighting. At joker was telling the story of the frog and the scorpion. Batman (the frog says) "why did you sting me? Now we'll both die!" And joker (scorpion) replies "thats the point!" And laughts maniacally

      Hah, well, that's another interpretation. I must admit, I love the Scorpion version. "But little frog, I can swim." Such a main character moment.

    The tortoise is about to get to the finish line when as fast as a lightning the hare, who had been lazying around all race gets just in time and beats the tortoise, the hare starts celebrating and asks the tortoise why he isn’t mad, the tortoise responds, why would I be mad? Destiny may be set, but that won’t deter me from my best, I nearly won you, I, a tortoise!

    • @JustInTimeWorlds
      @JustInTimeWorlds  3 роки тому +2

      There is also a fable that I made about how the tortoise got his patchwork shell that they tell in Africa. Tortoise are popular!

      The story did not end with the race. They needed a fast messenger and chose the winner, the tortoise. The end result was very nasty because the tortoise was not fast enough.

    Recuerdo la fábula del escorpión y la rana, de niño escribí unas cuantas variantes de esa historia, todas unidas por la supervivencia mutua de la rana y el escorpión:
    A veces el escorpión intentaba picar a la rana, pero ésta era más rápida y lograba dejar al escorpión en la orilla a tiempo, quedando en malos términos, pues el escorpión iba a seguir siendo una mala "persona" y la rana buscaría el exterminio absoluto de todos y cada uno de los escorpiones, da igual si eran hombres, mujeres o niños.
    Y otras veces el escorpión, a través de la razón, lograba sobreponerse a su naturaleza y no mataba a la rana, por lo que la rana seguía su camino y el escorpión se volvía mejor "persona".

    Do you by any chance, recognize the similarities between global myths? Of course there are many things that sound different, but many elements are the same.
    I have analyzed and analyzed and have come to the idea that the Monomyth complete, (Joseph Campbell did not completely identify) forms the core structure for all myths and religions, but they are nested in a verbal puzzle of creating analogs to represent the inner self and our life cycle. The Creation myth is how each of us comes about. The creation myths continue till a change needs to be made, then the monomyth picks up from there. Campbell completely missed the creation steps and went to the inner calling. It is most common of course. Creations myths only occur at the start of each myth or religious line. Exodus is a stark example of a monomyth and reads nearly like the Greek Argonautica. But we can see the template steps clearly.
    Both Moses and Jason isolated out and saved as kids.
    Both struggled to leave the past in leaving old islands for Jason or Egypt for Moses. Both leave but are chased. (Represents struggle to leave our own past behind)
    Both called to higher place, (Supernatural aid) Jason taken to Mt Olympus to talk with Hera and Zeus and gets help. Moses guided to Mt Horeb to talk to Yahweh at burning bush, calling, denial of call and gets Gods help.
    Crossing the Threshold - Jason sails through clashing Rocks with help of a God. Moses walks through Red Sea with help of God
    etc
    We must interpret the inner facing concepts nested within the carrier story.
    This above similarly represents, few will be called, they will suffer cyclical pain in life and that is what drives us to seek. But, it will be a struggle to leave behind. We must turn inward to face the depths of our own fears and so on.
    Just my thoughts. Great channel. Subbed

      So, I did some content on this. In my creation myth video I break down some of the various shared myths. In my live streams about layers I actually discuss exactly what you're talking about, the shared myths and how they work.
