Hey, just want to say I am getting into Mongoose Traveller 2e and your videos have been great. I've watched mapping space, sci-fi world building and now creating technology. Ill make sure to recommend you to other Traveller community members. Cheers!
S Tier - Song of Ice and Fire. I really like the whole veil of mystery when it comes to magic. What is magic in this world? A blessing or a curse? Are gods like R'hllor or the Old Gods really responsible for it? We know that people make cruel sacrifices to the Lord of Light by burning people alive, so should he be called a God or a Demon? Is it R'hllor who revives the dead like Lord Berric Dondarrion, who fell dead in battle 6 times, only to finally give his life the 7th time and pass it on with a kiss to Catelyn Stark, who had been dead for 2 days and thrown into the river, turning her into Lady Stoneheart, burning with fury and a desire for revenge? The Old Gods and the creepy faces carved into the white trunks of weirwoods and the red leaves resembling hands. Bran, who is a warg and a green seer who can enter the bodies of animals, as are all the Stark children who are unaware of this (apart from Arya and Jon) Robb, Arya, Jon Snow, Rickon. Only Sansa is cut off from her powers, having lost her direwolf Lady. What's up with the talking raven of Lord Commander of the Night's Watch Jeor Mormont and later Jon Snow? Is someone entering his raven body and trying to manipulate reality, like in the election for the new Lord Commander after Mormont's death? The whole story of Bran gives me the shivers. What are we supposed to think of an 8-year-old boy who enters the bodies of ravens and other animals, and as his direwolf, Summer eats human flesh? What are we supposed to think when he enters the body of a retarded giant stable boy Hodor, who hides far to the end of his consciousness like a beaten dog and lets Bran, who has paralyzed legs, walk? And when Bran sees through the eyes of the weirwood the past from thousands of years ago and the sacrifice by slitting the throat of a prisoner with a bronze sickle and tastes the blood that seeps into the roots? And his mentor, Brynden Rivers, called Bloodraven, once Hand of the King and spymaster of the kingdom, then Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, who disappeared during the expedition beyond the wall and now rests on a throne made of weirwood roots, dried out like a skeleton, over 120 years old, teaching Bran to be a green seer? I won't even mention the Others and their army of the dead and Euron "Crows Eye" Greyjoy or dragons and Valyria. The whole series brings more questions than answers, but I like this atmosphere of cosmic horror, the unknown lurking in the darkness. I hope GRRM will at least finish Winds of WInter. A Tier - WItcher. Magic is drawn from the elements, it allows to prolong life and gain a youthful appearance even at the age of 400, but if used unwisely it can kill the user. Magic is based on the power of four elements - water, fire, earth and air. The safest and easiest to draw power from are water veins. All four elements have different uses: the element of water allowed you to cause floods, bring rain to farmers' fields affected by drought and control the waves of the sea. The element of fire allowed you to cause fires, throw fireballs and create incredible heat. Earth allowed for faster plant growth, earthquakes, avalanches of boulders and in extreme cases - shifting the entire terrain. Air, in turn, allowed for levitation or stunning, as well as moving heavy objects over long distances. In the world of The Witcher, magic and technology work together, creating a society almost equal to ours in terms of technological level - genetic research is conducted, it is used in cosmetics and in many other areas of life. Thanks to magic, there is something like our weapon of mass destruction - cataclysms (earthquakes or meteorite showers) can take countless victims. Magic was used, among other things, in genetics. It was also used to treat some diseases. Magic was also an element of the Witcher's Trial of Grasses. Elven magic allowed for the production of several excellent women's cosmetics, which were of no small importance. Their price on the market reached dizzying prices. In addition, sorceresses used magic to improve their appearance (for example, Yennefer's hump and several other defects were removed with the help of magic). Each king has sorcerers in his court, who serve him and the kingdom as advisors. The truth is that sorcerers plot their intrigues, communicate with each other and de facto controls politics throughout the Continent. There's more, of course, but I don't want to exhaust the subject, because of spoilers. I recommend everyone to read books about the Witcher! Sorry for such a long post.
PLEASE give us some ancient Inca content! I'm grateful you gave some love to the Mesoamerican cultures. It is difficult to research, but that content is always my fav!
I'm trying to find some good information :) The problem is that there's so few original sources and so much speculation and inference, it's hard to sift the chaff from the wheat.
manga, but i think the magic system from witch hat atelier is one my favorites now.
Thanks for covering this one, empires are one of those things I learned abourt early since my dad's English. A lot of times enpires don't exclusively oppress or uplift, it's usually both. For every atrocity the British Empire committed it ended another, it sucked resources out of India but it brought infrastructure.
13:43 this is the USA rn
It's very easy to fall too far down the rabbit hole of cyclical comparisons. Learn from history, yes, but don't believe it will of necessity repeat exactly as is.
Another great video! I have grappled with questions of empire definition in my fantasy novel series The Ultideic Prophecies. For example, when an empire loses control of all but its core constituents, is its still an empire? When a kingdom formalizes the subsidiary relationship of vassal polities within its aristocratic structure (e.g. a conquered king becomes a duke of the conquering kingdom), but otherwise allows the vassal jurisdiction to maintain a degree of autonomy, is it actually an empire? If an empire endures long enough to create cultural and political homogeneity among the controlled territories, does it eventually cease to be an empire and become a single state? Line drawing (like in the real world) can be messy and interesting.
Up ❤🇧🇷 i love this video ❤❤
Up 😮❤️🇧🇷
Aren't you married to that famous Author Donald Mullany? Interesting vlog - thanks for sharing Marie!
LOL. I'd say he's married to famous UA-camr from Just In Time Worldbuilding.
My favorite thing about the Han Empire is it was the gayest Empire in China's history 😊 You can tell by the fashion too. 😊 It had the best fashion 😊
I don't even think you need the fashion. Emperor Aoi was pretty open about his male companion, as were most of them :). I love that bisexuality was the norm for the Han. I wish China kept that till today. If you forced me to go back in time, please send me there. I could do "paired eating" as they called the female version :)
5:53 I think some of the early colifete, as basis for empire would be interesting: Rashidun, Umayyad, and/or Abbasid.
Those have life cycles of an empire within the empire, it's crazy
Maybe an expanded list sometime in the future.
@JustInTimeWorldbuilding You were asking at the time about south american, but I think going into the islamic cycle is certainly the priority in trying to expand our understanding. I'd even prioritize it up over the chinese, but those two are the mysteries most important non european. The south American groups have the record missing, but the isolation barrier also means they're outside the cultural cycles, and it's a zeitgeist of cultures of the audience. On that basis, after I was looking at go to the western and eastern european, the east asian and the islamic cycles, I would go to africa and then astronesia/polynesia Add evenne indus before I went to the the america's as a source just because of the isolation and erasure, moving it out of the zeitgeist, and therefore the audience relatability.
Matriarchy would be better.
What I feel like I'm witnessing now, is that the obsession with strength and authority causes competitiveness, and bullies to pick on those they see as vulnerable and weak, the "weak" strike back when and where they can, sometimes as crime, theft and bandits or weaponized incompetence. Justice is abandoned in favor of power. This whole situation causes mistrust in society as a whole until it breaks down. In other words: the obsession with strength leads to weakness. And they do this instead of creating unity and strength through compassion and cooperation. Calls for unity are done through force and moral judgmentalism rather than care for others in a real material way. It doesn't work, and life only gets worse for the general population who eventually revolt or there is civil war or external powers invade, which the people are relatively apathetic to instead of fighting back.
Respectfully, I would classify the US as an empire. The US has territories where the people are citizens that can vote for president, but they don’t have representation in the House or the Senate. I think the plan may have been to make them states, but the political will for that died out, and now they’re technically citizens without representation. The US won’t let them become their own nations, either, since they’re in very advantageous positions for military bases.
The US rules other countries indirectly through propaganda, the IMF, the world bank , and other institutions [neo-colonialism]. Totally in line with the stated definition
@@programmerdave9893 came to say something similar, I’ve also heard America described as the imperial core
Do you have a plan for your thumbnails in the future? Ugly patched-up renders probably made by AI are really giving your channel an air of cheapness. I don't know any other channel who does thumbnails as accidentally deepfried as yours. Most dnd and worldbuilding creators just use their own face. Even small creators hire artists. It feels like the one thing about your channel which doesn't have a professional touch. You clearly have expertise in what you say and we get to feel that when listening to your videos. I don't think the thumbnails do you any such justice. I wish your channel really reflected the value I believe you have as a creator. Those thumbnails really keep catching my eye for the wrong reasons, I even avoid most of your videos until I seek them out on purpose. They are not appealing at all in my news feed between a face and an artist's work. It clashes. Feels cheap. Anyways.
LOL! That is one of my least AI thumbnail. That photo? It's me from 10 years ago with a glam filter. The logo in the background? That's my new channel logo drawn by a human. I've just started a race between that thumbnail and one actually generated by AI. Bet you the AI one wins, as it always does. For 2 years, I tried using my face on thumbnails. No one clicked. I need clicks to make content. Oh and FYI, most videos don't make enough money to justify an artists. I hired an artist for the channel logo because I can re-use that all the time. The thumbnails change too often.
Ay! Another person using Historical Materialism in their worldbuilding!
I think teleportation case could be very interesting for a fantasy Empire you might not even need roads in certain places
What do you think of the concept of during the decline of the empire someone comes into restore it the fantasy equivalent of Julius Caesar or Alexander right when it's about to end
I mean, that's pretty much what happened to Rome. The Republic was crumbling and then there was Ceaser and a change in government and that's how Rome got a new lease on life. I explore that in this series :D

Magic contracts make a great plot device especially if you want to focus on external threats
Why would a fantasy empire need a transfer of power? An immortal leader might govern an empire for millenia
He or she could get bored and just have some one else govern, or disappear all together.

Sorry but Mistborn is not good, its slow and boring, its clunky, try-hard and overall its so hard to finish the trilogy. Its at least 1000 pages too long
Fortunately, we can all have different opinions on books and that’s okay 😊 I enjoyed mistborn, it was right for me. You didn’t and that was right for you.

One unique solution for the basic supply infrastructure for everything from mining metals, useful chemicals and medicines, sewers and waste treatment, food production, fuel, lumber and paper, and potentially even things like magic and alchemy, is Mushrooms! Did you know that the largest living organism on earth is a honey mushroom out in Oregon, USA. It's scientific name is Armillaria solidipes, and covers 10 square kilometers or 2,200 acres and is believed to be anywhere from 2,400 to 8,000 years old for that particular specimen. It's Mycelium has symbiotic connections to pretty much every tree and plant that grows in it's territory, trading water and minerals from deep underground for carbohydrates from the plants. The tallest known mushroom is called Prototaxites, and was 24 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Now imagine your forests having the occasional mushroom tree as part of the ecosystem, or maybe even entire forests of them. Are the stems woody, and can they be used like wood? Are they edible? When I first read The Way of Kings by Branden Sanderson, the thing I fell in love with was that their food, Lavis and Tallew was grown in Grain Polyps. That and the giant domesticated crabs as livestock. It made the world feel unique. Are there symbiotic species that grow on the giant mushrooms? Maybe an entire ecosystem of them? Do some of them produce grain? There is a theory about psychedelic mushrooms helping to contribute to human intelligence and mental development. You can take that a step further and have a "Magic" mushroom that awakens a persons mind to magic. Alchemy is an easy one. Why is that mushroom glowing? What does it do? I remember reading a joke about the first people to test for edibility. "This one tastes like beef, that one makes you see God, and this other one will kill you." How about adding "and this one gives you magic powers!" or "That one heals you rapidly", or whatever. Different types of mushrooms, or rather the Mycelium which is the real mushroom even if you don't usually see it, decompose things and absorb them. A wood mushroom such as oyster mushrooms have enzymes that break down cellulose. Turns out that those same enzymes can break down crude oil and plastic for the mushroom to absorb. I also remember reading a study about using mushrooms to "collect" heavy metals from the environment and concentrating them in the fruiting body. Mushrooms can be used to process human waste, decomposing it into mushroom food. Some decompose trees in a forest, while others decompose animals. There is even a type of fungus that lives inside of nuclear reactor rooms and eats radiation! Is there one that feeds on magic? How do your people mine your fantasy metal? In the book series The DemonWars Saga by R.A. Salvatore, Ferns are what collect the metal and concentrate it into a thread in the middle of the stems, Mythral if I remember correctly though it has been a few decades. The Mycologist Paul Stamets mentioned how Mycelium has signals similar to neurons in a brain. You could use this for everything from a living sentient world, to simple long range communications, to the internet, to memory constructs. Imagine an entity thousands of years old, that remembers everything. Is it a library? A teacher? A friend? An enemy? Does it have a personality? Several? Can a copy of people's minds live on inside it? So you created a fantasy world? When you describe the world itself, does it end up looking exactly like earth? Why?
Why are you sideways?
thank youo for the many tips
Any time!

I'm working on a world with a magic system that allows for sympathetic magic, but it's all presented through a vaguely alchemical aesthetic. For example, you could synthesize a special mercury-like liquid, which, if poured into two vials, will press against the sides of the vial, attracted to each other, instead of sitting at the bottom. This technique is used for navigation. Alternatively, you could get a powder which is configured to react to a specific creature (for example, if you give an alchemist a knife, they could configure this powder to react to everyone who has touched that knife. On either end.) and glows when it is sprinkled on their footprints. I have two stories in this world, and one of them has a major character who invented a way to make any ink written on one piece of paper appear on another page elsewhere. This technique would eventually go on to lead to the invention of mass-production of books, long-distance communication, and photographic film.
Nice.
I think the not washing myth comes from the fact that they also knew that washing outdoors in the cold wasn't a great option either, and moving and heating enough water to bathe with was difficult so a peasant might not bathe regularly for 6-8 months out of the year, but might also just go hop in the local stream in summer. I also recall hearing that one of the two Roosevelt us presidents was asthmatic or had weak lungs or maybe anemia as a child and the doctors recommended he smoke cigars to build up his lungs. An interesting side note on the Arab world taking on the classical knowledge bases was that one of the biggest spurs for that was the suppression of that same knowledge by the early christian church. It was less that the Arabs took that knowledge and more that the alchemists and philosophers and the librarians were either fleeing east or at least sending their work east to preserve it. So the active suppression of knowledge can be seen to ironically be a mechanism of the transmission of that same knowledge. An alternative to sewer systems was the nightsoil men, basically people would have non flush toilets in their homes and the waste would go down a shoot into a little room that could be accessed via external doors and the nightsoil men were paid to come by and shovel it into carts to be taken out of the city, placed in a compost heap or a midden outside the walls. An interesting idea with fantasy races if you have significantly longer lifespans certain tech might advance much faster than others, for instance a society of elves who live for a millennia or more might progress to the heights of the end of the bronze age without writing having ever been invented. Another fun idea to look at is more on the techno side of technomagic, so you can just make fire out of nothing ZPM style infinite energy because your a pyromancer... why would you ever stop using steam power, steam powered numatic tools steam engines steam cleaning steam powered guns. Alternatively you have lightning mages what tech could you build in a bronze/iron age transitional period if you just had electricity.
A nightsoil man would be a super interesting character :D
@@JustInTimeWorldbuilding would be a natural for a smuggler... do you really want to search the cart???
What do you think of an enchanted Polaroid camera that gives you power over whoever you took a picture of
That would be a very interesting "power corrupts" device.
When you mentioned the printing press images of having a problem with it that made me think what if they took the knowledge from The inventor mind and they used it for their own purposes for their own propaganda maybe they used it to mass-produced spells or curses of some kind I like the idea of fusing technology and Magic versus England against each other
When it comes to handing down knowledge I think there's four interesting ways of doing that knowledge crystals directly implanting memories through Magic Touch Your Spell ciphers that you can read once you're deemed Worthy genetic memory
What are your thoughts on playing with the time period and Technology I think it would be interesting to have a medieval Kingdom that's a buffer State and Ally to a Dwarven Empire so when he goes to war he has Gatling guns maybe I should introduce it slowly or make the guns copper like that way it won't brake immersion
Play some different forms of technology I can see Polaroids causing all sorts of problems I can see some countries requiring your license to have it
I'm always careful of time. There are so many ways to completely break your world if you futz with time too hard.
What a wonderful ditch, absolutely stunning.
What is a fosse if it's not a ditch? Ditches are great defense.
Very nice voice!! Well modulated!!
But teleporting wizards would demand pay, while owls work for free😂
Money makes the worlds go round
14:05 technically (and admitedly a absolutely pointless nitpick) North Korea is a necrocracy, since Kim Il Sung is the "Eternal Leader" possibly limiting his grandsons (or, as some claim, sons) power by the power of tradition.
wish I could send you my series to see what you think of my political fantasy structure. I introduced the change of political system early in book two of my series
This is awesome! Thanks for always putting out great info
