- Here's a gem for you Lone Star/ Paul Chapman/ Jon Sloman fans. September 29th 1977, London. The video is not great, it's OK though, but I haven't seen another source for this broadcast, I got hold of this video in a trade, then synched audio from my own master analogue cassette recording of the radio broadcast . The radio b'cast was a little shorter than the TV b'cast so the inferior audio cuts in during the last track. What a great band, check out their two albums and the originally unreleased third, Riding High.
The other half of the show was the legendary Pat Travers.
1. She Said She Said
2. The Ballad of Crafty Jack
3. Bells of Berlin
4. All of Us To All of You
5. Flying In The Reel
RIP: "Tonka", God Bless you & Thank you! :(
I’ve seen all the greats. Why this band never made it is beyond me.
I’ve got firing on all six. What an album !
Holy Mother of God - 70's Rock at it's finest. Why this band didn't conquer the world is beyond me. Thanks for uploading..
Just reformed and touring !!!
Couldn't agree more.
RIP Dixie Lee.
They came a bit to late. At that point Punk and New Wave was riding high. Classic style Rock bands were considered "Old Hat" in these days. Even established bands had difficulties selling enough albums to satisfy record companies expectations.
@@Klaus80804 their manager stole the money , left them high and dry in an airport in Canada. Dixie lee was a personal friend of mine .
RIP Paul Chapman. absolute legend guitarist
I saw this incredible band several times at the Rainbow Finsbury park and still have the original albums with both Kenny Driscoll and Jon Sloman taking the lead vocals. Should of been a massive band along with Leppard and co they were incredible.Rick Worksnop was a great songwriter and Chappas an incredible guitar player.
The 2 albums they left were awesome. Imagine if this creative streak would have continued? Such power and engagement. They had a brilliant formula. I grew up with this shit. We listen to so much stuff over the years and a lot of it gets, sadly, forgotten; but Lone Star made a big mark on my memory and I still listen to them now. The Beatles cover! Jesus Christ how good was that?
Hello everybody, and sorry for broken English...I'm French ...
Thank you for posting this great vidéo, this remind me when I was a teenager, I'm now 51 years old.
I'm very pleased to hear this group again...
I'm always very fan of solo guitar, for instance at 6,52', and a lot of others and solo drums too...
Thank you for all that..
+alain c oh toi, tu dois connaitre angel...trigger...whitesnake....rainbow....mahogany rush...
Oui je connais Angel et Rainbow.
Mais aussi et surtout Judas Priest.
Sinon j'aime aussi, Starz, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep,
Enjoy. ..
RIP Paul Chapman
What an absolute gem.....! I had the BBC Live in Concert audio for this show and have wondered if it would ever be published and here it is.... Like many other commentators on this gig I too have searched for this many times on here and now I can jump in to the DeLorean and get back to the 70's.... Well done Nigel, step forward and take a bow!
I had the pleasure of seeing this band live at Newcastle City Hall back in 1977 fantastic musician, great vocals from John Sloman this band deserved much better, they should be a recognised name like Deep Purple, Led Zepplin etc in my opinion.
"Agree also" middle rows 5 rows back, great sound on the night". my local gig" these guys can really play" the drummer is awesome,.
I saw them in 1977 what a band live hail to mr chapman on lead
I was there, they were the very best, along with Nutz, Budgie, Stray , Widowmaker, you know , the ones who filled the technical colleges on a Friday night xxxxxxx
John Sloman was outstanding, he is still gigging, if he plays somewhere local, will definitely go to that one.
Super British band. I was raised on their top-of -the-line music at that 70s..Thank you Lone Star!!
Lone Star was my youth. I loved this band. Thank you for this great video. Peace ,love and safety to you and your family.
Me too 78 brill year for music
Saw them in 1977, loved them, sadly broke up, still have their albums "Lone Star" and "Firing on all Six"
RIP paul glad i discovered you here in this band, you will be missed
I recall seeing UFO numerous times in NY/NJ area from 1976-1981. When Schenker didn't appear Paul Chapman did. he was booed. Not due to his performance but the expectations of the hungry Michael Schenker fans. Paul Chapman was nothing less than superb performance and sound wise..brilliant. Fortunately I had the chance to chat with paul after a 1980 show, downright good guy as well.
Thanks for this. I’ve never seen any footage of the band. Found their Lone Star album in Japan. Just listened to it on a whim. Loved and bought it. Been listening to it ever since. But no one in my part of the world has heard of them. This is my first glimpse of the band. So, thanks again. Cheers.
I saw them as a 17 year old at Reading Festival 77. Superb and later got the album Firing On All Six! Thanks for this! Also very sad news today regarding Paul Chapman!
what a great band this was . after all these years it is still great to listen to
Fantastic !!!!. I remember this on the TV and could never understand why they vanished as a band shortly after. As someone else has commented they should be up there with Deep Purple etc.
I saw them live, as good as they were, they were at the wrong end of an era. Punk was the reason they disappeared.
We used to listen to these guys back in the day 1977!! awesome! Just bought the vinyl today!
I just bought the remaster 2011 Rock Candy cd today as well. Cool band. Reminds me of stuff like Led Zeppelin, Rush, 70s Styx, and early Magnum.
John Sloman also sang for Uriah Heep for one (really good IMO) album.
A very good band who were - depending on your perspective - a little too late, a little too early, or not quite good enough. This shows them at their best: the strengths and the weaknesses. It's a fair representation. The records are still worth hearing, which isn't always true of 'unjustly forgotten bands'.
I remember that they were relentlessly plugged by Alan Freeman on BBC radio: and not without reason.
Thank you been looking ....ALL OVER...... for this , saw them and Mahogony Rush in '77 ??
I was at that gig.. Wasn't full but totally Love LS.. Went to see them as much as I did Mahogany Rush
🙋♂️ Wow! 😊
Lone Star were the first live (non-pub) band I saw who truly 'blew my mind'!😊 🤪
As a fresher student at Strathclyde University in the Autumn of 1976 I went to see Mott The Hoople. Thank God I got there early for one of the best seats in the house. I had never heard such amazing keyboard playing and nor had I seen live harmonising guitars. I agree with other comments saying they are gobsmacked that this band never made it bigger... 😕
I bought their first album there and of course came away raving about Lone Star 🌟!!! 😊
Mott The Hoople were great, but I think Lone Star just blew them away that night! 😊
This is what great memories are made of!
THANK YOU LONE STAR 🌟!!! 😊 👍 ❤️
Lone Star attract a lot of UFO fans like me, but they were in fact very much their own band. Very original too!
Thank you , thank you , thank you ....forever in your debt, I knew this footage existed I watched it at the time....looked all over the net for years ....love this band.
Dixie Lee. Totally outstanding.
just saw the vid of him throwing a drumstick in the crowd, stupid move but he is still ridiculously good at what he does
Surge Álvarez many drummers throw sticks into the crowd. Why is that a stupid move?
Agreed
Nigel. Thanks for posting this. Been searching for I for a while. Remember seeing this on the BBC and also saw them twice on their UK tour with Mott. Great band and felt they never got the recognition they deserved.
I saw them with Mott too, Edinburgh Students Union.
I thought I'd lost this about 30 years ago when my tape of the original broadcast (including the Pat Travers gig) went AWOL. Great band sadly underrated.
Thanks fir retrieving some genuine rock memorabilia!
Still have the albums on vinyl.
What a great band, they deserved better.
Yes Hahaha , I had forgotten what a Robert Plant impersonator John Sloman was on stage , but what!!!! he did have one hell of a voice
Brilliant band, I know Tony well, he's still gigging regularly, still outstanding.
Saw them playing at the Reading festival. Met Dixie some years later when he was playing with Wild Horses, he gave me a drum stick which I still have today :)
I saw Lone Star supporting Mott and they were terrific! I have a feeling that I saw them twice, but I wish I could have seen more!
First heard Lone Star doing a session on The Friday Rock Show around 1979! I was absolutely transfixed! Tommy was stunned as well! 😜
What a great band- just the wrong time!!!!
That what Kenny said, Punk music killed off great musicians.........
Thanks Nigel, brilliant upload. Saw it when it was first transmitted - and have been hoping the full transmission would turn up at some point - nice job on synching the audio with it, and while its not super quality video its pretty watchable. Nice one.
I have been trying to find live footage of this amazing band for so long. I have been a devoted fan since the first time I heard the Firing on all Six album. Then lucked into finding the first album and (Firing) album combined. Thanks so much for sharing this! You Rock!!!!
You might want to get a copy of the CD unreleased demos of the sessions for the third album Riding High then mate
FANTASTIC ~ well done Nigel, you deserve a medal for preserving this gig!
er, namecheck required, but thanks
Nigel Butterworth Done! (ooops)
THX !! - Caught Chapman w/ UFO and had the first Lonestar album on vinyl. Brings back some memories.
Absolutely superb, seen the at Newcastle city hall around 1977 and great to have come across this
Wow...cannot believe this made it to UA-cam. These guys were beloved - in San Antonio, TX - of all places. Must be something in the water in Cardiff, what with Budgie and Lone Star. Nigel - thanks man!
RIP drummer Dixie Lee ..what a brilliant drummer he was x
Great to hear it in Dobly too
Rough as it is by today's standards, it's a good job this stuff lives on ! Music history !!!
Thanks for your efforts with this Nigel, love this band, much appreciated...
Holy shit.....
This is awesome....
Thanks
Listened to LoneStar first time on the Alan Freeman radio show in uk on a Saturday afternoon. He played tracks from the firing on all six album. Told the audience how it was recorded in quadraphonic, i just recall the sound being fantastic
Me too :) Happy Days!
Terrific! I'd never seen Jon Sloman performing the earlier stuff before. Always thought he was an exceptional and underrated talent and loved the brief period in Uriah Heep's history when he was with them.
emdienne
I think he was a better fit for Uriah Heep than John Lawton personally.
I like Chapman with Lone Star so much better but he was awesome with UFO as well. Just one mans opinion!
Schenker left extremely large shoes to be filled.
Those were the days! There were lots of good session stuff played on the late Alan Freeman's saturday Rock Show (2-5pm!!!) O-Level revision distracted and derailed by bands like Lone Star, Stretch, PFM etc etc... Lone star were victims of the punk movement gaining popularity at that same time (unfortunately!) Great videos and music - thanks for the upload. Check out John Peel's stuff on Spotify too
Those Saturday afternoon shows were unmissable. Fuck, even the jingles with snatches of classic tracks were exciting!
Great days. 👍
Well done for uploading, one of the forgotten bands, good vocals ( good to see a rock singer oversinging)
Seen Lone Star in Glasgow in 1976 supporting ' MOTT ' Brilliant !
I actually got to play the black Les Paul in there dressing room, great night.
Dixie just passed away 27.1.22. RIP
Thanks for posting and for your work. Great audio quality also.
The bbc should put these shows out again, Sight and sound in concert say a Friday night ideal.
Thanks for posting this I'm eternally grateful
thanks for uploading this video, brought back memories,a great band.
Can you believe that's 40 years ago.
Thanks!
Good for you, what a gem !! I love Lone Star from this era, this is a great track covered by many, but not anywhere as good as this not even the Beatles original, Many thanks for this, it;s great the soundtrack is brilliant.
Great band. I was singing in a local band and we covered a Lone Star track, and Dixie (who lived just down the road) and original vocalist Kenny Driscoll where listening to us during a rehearsal - no pressure then! Dixie hasn't played for decades, such a shame.
God bless Tonka...
thanks so much, already been posted to tony smith's FB page , and Kenny driscolls!
Great, thanks, if you get any feedback be sure to let me know.
Nigel Butterworth tony's partner says thanks, he HASN'T seen it before! saw Kenny driscoll last night but thought maybe he won't be to interested as paul chapman was singing! i'll wait til he comments online
jeff smith
Thanks, you mean to say Jon Sloman was singing.
Brilliant thanks for the effort in this upload
Cheers Nigel, been waiting a long time for this one!!! Shame they didn't do one with Kenny Driscoll.
Brilliant. That is all I can say. Gone for good "Lone Starring". Love this video.
thank you so much.. saw gabriel in the capitol in cardiff and these guys were playing the next night.. didn't make it but they have always been one of my favourite bands and to see the ballad of crafty jack.. has made my day.. Cheers mate!
Been a huge fan of this lot since I heard firing on all six. Have always thought bells of Berlin, was a last wave to "prog" and here we go with a heavier sound in UK music.
Great to see them live. lead singer had clearly seen Mr Plant before........... and so what.
I also hear a lot of Glen Hughes in John Sloman’s vocals as well.
Just discovered this band yesterday thanks to Joe Elliot who played The Bells of Berlin on his radio program. Kinda reminded me of the band Kansas.
One of me Favorit at this time
own first two albums. love the video.
thanks for posting...takes me back.
seen them in Newcastle city hall about 1977. great band great time sought of sad now iam 60 looking back at my youth...
Wow, what a find, Lone Star! What a track their album cover of She Said is, absolutely brilliant, I play it regularly in the car, simply superb stuff. If you're gonna do a cover, slaughter the original with a magnificent version of your own. Gonna trawl through my vinyl now. Tragically they should have been HUGE, what a sound. Thanks Nigel, bless ya, thumbs up!!
great someone found this....
Wow, hats off.
You're most welcome Steve Davies.....this one is a 147 for sure. ;-)
+Nigel Butterworth Thank you so much for sharing this f*cking brilliant video. Love to hear Paul "Tonka" Chapman. Cheers, Jerry
Thanks for this
Awesome! Thanks for sharing :)
Top!!!! Cheers mate.
First proper band I saw live in '77, had both albums and just loved them. Should have been massive!!
I had a terrific career in the late 70's repairing audio / HiFi equipment... Guess what I was doing on a Saturday afternoon while I should have been working...? Good old 'Fluff' He introduced me to loads of bands like this...!!
Awesome!!!
"Thanks for this Nigel" I have both albums" well done. "What has Happened to the British rock- music scene now""? "I think it moved to "Finland!! "Bless UA-cam for bringing it back""
Awesome
I can remember hearing this very TV/radio show at the time, and thinking "Yes meet Zeppelin in a three way pub brawl with Deep Purple,,, and Purple win" not maybe my exact thoughts after all this time, but hey! That's hindsight.....good shit though but punk was happening and Lone Star where a few years too late, gawd bless 'em
fantastic band saw them in Manchester at the freetrades Hall absolute talent from all members of the band should of been as big as deep purple it's a great shame there is only 2 albums thay should of taken the world by storm
There is a third album available online.
"Should OF been as big"...should OF!! It's "should HAVE dear friend. Don't cheapen the language. Should of...sheesh!
Saw these guys live at Johnson hall Yeovil in 76,supporting mott the hoople, probably gonna annoy a fan base in one comment, but line star were by far the better band on the night, was listening to firing on all six about half an hour ago and decided I needed a reminder visually of just how bloody good they were. I know you remember yer first live gig,and it was a special night, missed out on a lone star frisbee tho! Anyone else go to that concert,Tuesday 9th November? Fun thing was there was hardly anyone there, had groups of friends sitting on the floor,I was leaning on the stage all the way through,to the left side with my mate kev, will always throw six on and remember, long may they last in memories of a great band making great music.
SUPER !!!
What a great time for the britsh rock!!!!I miss a lot!!
Brilliant band ,saw them 3 times during their short lived career, should have been massive.
Great band should've been so much bigger
blinding Nigel maybe this time giants of rock mine head 2016 I wish . great stuff hats off to u buddy
Great ,wonderful concert !
Great drummer. Like them. Still have that lp.
Wow, that is great! John Sloman - brilliant.
Great band, should've been massive!
Gods Got you know Paul Chapman . See you up there someday . Amen .
