    Northrop got robbed. This aircraft is one of the most beautiful planes ever produced. It’s a shame that this aircraft never got put into service.

  • @Aim54Delta

    It really depends upon what airspeed you're talking about.
    The F-23 had superior maneuverability at higher airspeeds, and also had laminar flow over its wings through much greater angles of attack (because of the same wedge wing design that reduced viscous drag). The F-22 had superior handling at low airspeeds due to thrust vector control.
    It basically boils down to whether you want to look good at airshows or kill things.

      YF-23 is more like a little fast bomber than a fighter, is like the continuation of the family B-52, B1, B2 and this one.

      The agility difference between the two was minimal the thrust vectoring didn't make much of a difference for the F22 they both achieved the same 70degree aoa. The difference was the Northrup team wasn't allowed to say the flight capabilities at the time because the numbers were so good the air force literally didn't believe them. The big difference was the huge canted vertical stabilizers don't have flaps they actually fully rotate

      Invisible means 'not visible to the eye.' The use of 'invisible' to say 'not detectable by radar' is hyperbole. Furthermore, it *is* detectable by radar. It is just less detectable. Between the two of us, I am clearly not the dumbass. You can keep your personal insults to yourself, along with the rest of your worthless, ignorant words. Thanks.

      Actually "invisible" can mean very different things depending on context. Duke University researchers just invented an acoustic cloaking device that is "invisible to sonar". It isn't an impossible exaggeration, but rather an alternate definition, so the word hyperbole was inappropriate for your comment as well. Your first comment was clever and funny, but your second comment was neither. You're certainly not a dumbass, but that guy is indeed a prick.

    I worked at Edwards Air Force Base during the YF-22 and YF-23 fly off. First of all the real name of the YF-23 was the "Gray Ghost" until the Northrup-McDonald Douglas team found out that they had named their airplane after Lockheed's first test vehicle of the P-80 (F-80), which was given the nick name and call sign, the "Grey Ghost" because it was painted grey and it was so fast for its time that it came and went like a ghost. Next, the radar guided telescopes/video cameras at the Ridely Mission Control Test facility had no problem locking in on to the YF-23 and was able to follow both of the test aircraft's flight path during testing, so it was not very "stealthy". What finally happened to the two YF-23 prototypes is one was left out in the sun at Edwards for several years to test the damage done to the composites during extended exposure to the elements. It was first stored on the flight line and them moved over to the B-2 Combined Test Facility. The second one was taken and used as a target to test the impact damage done by rounds from various types of ordnance. While the results were used to help in the design of other aircraft, it is still a sad way to end a very unique looking aircraft.

      Cocandre yes, it goes away from the general public. But this plane was too good to just throw away. I'm sure many of the new technologies incorpotated were not discarded, specially if the system was considered revolutionary. A similar case: the f18 lost to the f16 in their contest for the USAF's light fighter, in the 70s. But the loser became the navy's premier fighter. Also, when a weapon is too expensive, the brass at the Pentagon will not necessarily discard it ALL the time, just like the f35.

    • @mapanggulo
      @mapanggulo 8 років тому

      +mapanggulo Yeah, after reading up on the contest between yf-22 and yf-23 it seems the testing criteria we're getting weighted for jobs that neither of the planes ultimately ended up being built for ( navy pulled out of the program ). I've heard this plane might have overall, been less expensive and just as capable ( if not more so due to the criteria ). Strange how these were evaluated.

    The F23 had several problems according to the US Defense Dept., if you believe them: #1 It was too hard to handle, #2 It was too complicated and too expensive because the DOD framed out components to so many places and design specs could never be met, #3 Components broke down so often, especially in flight that repair time turnarounds were impossibly long, #4 It never met performance claims, #5 It was horribly expensive to build and took so long to assemble that only a few were ever made, #6 The test pilots hated it and said it handled erratically, responded oddly and simply was not safe and #7 It used too much fuel. The F22's neatest feature was that it had vectored thrust. the F23 could have had it added, but it didn't have it. This was the "Official" rejection notice. But everyone I ever spoke with who was involved with the project said it was the best aircraft of its kind ever made and its pilots said it handled like a dream.

      James Barclay Also in Role & yaw authority at high Alpha, the YF-23 exceeded the YF-22. Which 2D TVC does not help. TVC is mostly useful for trim, bleeding speed quickly to reach optimal corner IAS, and for enhanced authority post-stall pitch authority, though. Just from a big fully moveable tail plane like on the the YF-23 without problems like tail slide from TVC . I doubt Northrop would have done silly things like put magnesium access panels on a carbon composite frame & cause unbelievable corrosion problems like Lockheed did .

    A quick glance at the parallelogram wings and ruddervators, the highly canted ruddervators, combined with the sleek, smooth, streamlined fuselage will tell anyone that , even without adding RAM, this plane's fundamental shape beats the F-22 ''Craptor'' hands down in terms of RCS, supercruise and acceleration.

    No one talks about it but, having a family member the worked at Northrup Grumman for nearly 30 years, in all honesty, the F-22 win because if the fact that there was a "feud/bad blood" between the US Government/Military and Northrop from the early days of the OG flying wing of the 1950s and the subsequent B-2 and thus, because the 23 didn't blow the 22 clearly out of the water (most categories it was decently ahead but not by a huge a margin like the 35 was over the 36), the 22 won the contract.

  • @jonathanwhatley4230
    @jonathanwhatley4230 10 років тому +1

    The Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF-23 was an American single-seat, twin-engine fighter aircraft designed for the United States Air Force (USAF). The design was a finalist in the USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) competition, battling the Lockheed YF-22 for a production contract. Two YF-23 prototypes were built with the nicknames "Black Widow II" and "Gray Ghost".
    In the 1980s, the USAF began looking for a replacement for its fighter aircraft, especially to counter the USSR's advanced Sukhoi Su-27 and Mikoyan MiG-29. Several companies submitted design proposals; the USAF selected proposals from Northrop and Lockheed. Northrop teamed with McDonnell Douglas to develop the YF-23, while Lockheed, Boeing and General Dynamics developed the YF-22.
    The YF-23 was stealthier and faster, but less agile than its competitor. After a four-year development and evaluation process, the YF-22 was announced the winner in 1991 and entered production as the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. The U.S. Navy considered using the production version of the ATF as the basis for a replacement to the F-14, but these plans were later canceled. The two YF-23 prototypes were museum exhibits as of 2009

    • @InVisibleTechTV
      @InVisibleTechTV  8 років тому

      There are several different kinds of radar. One of which is the radar signal that is generated by the aircraft to detect adversaries. B2 and F117 can be detected by tracing their radar transmissions. The YF23 had stealth radar transmissions. It was totally silent. And it had far superior engine cooling so its heat signature was minimal compared to the other two.

    • @XyroNO
      @XyroNO 8 років тому

      +JEnkins91589 Your comparing apples to oranges. The F-117A has been retired for a few years now, although people still claim they see them from time to time. The F-117A was also one of the worlds first stealth aircraft (circa 1981), but from what I've gathered it was actually quite unstable in flight. The B-2 strategic bomber, is just that a bomber and is part of the U.S nuclear delivery system, it's made to stay in the air for quite literally days at a time.
      If you want actual stealth fighters then you have this as well as the F-22 and now the F-35. I also heard that the F-117A was more of a bomber in a sense, not really the kind of plane you'd want to be in during a dog fight. The F-117A/B-2 were designed to infiltrate enemy airspace, inflict maximum damage by hitting specific targets and then GTFO.

    People, please. they all fly better and more reliably than the F-35 MoneySinkHole fighter. Multirole; It does everything equally bad and doesn't work. They are putting in a new gun system now with 180 rounds of ammo and it won't be fit to the aircraft till 2017. i think it's time to put this dog down. The STOVOL version is so rediculously overcomplicated that it's got to be a joke.

      The F35 is so expensive and complicated to repair that they almost can't afford to keep one in the air. There have been other "uh Ohs" for US aviation: the F111B whose swept wings kept getting stuck on retraction attempts, the XB70 bomber that looked great, but kept crashing, the Navy "Pogo" that had to be landed on its trail and had bed casters for wheels, and Lockheed's attempt at a jet powered Flying Saucer. There was the most preposterous of all, the AB1 atomic powered bomber. And if you think we were doing weird stuff you should have seen what Russia and France attempted.

      Lockheed Martin F-35 is actually an updated Soviet Yakovlev 141 built as a prototype that never made it into production as it lost out to the SU 27 series during the Soviet military's product development cycle in the late 80's early 90's. Look for yourselves its not a secret.

    1:05 - and then it got scraped because it didn't look as sexy as the Raptor. By all accounts (all the available information) YF-23 performed better than the F-22 just did not have that hot rod factor. I actualy came across a peace of information somewhere that there were some rumors about ther revival of the YF-23 program to make it a light bomber.

    • @riskinhos
      @riskinhos 9 років тому +5

      those rumours are just that. rumours.
      and no. it didn't performed better. performance is measured across many fields and no way whatsoever that it was better in everything.
      also hot rod is not a factor.

      The YF-23 only had enough internal payload room for 6 air2air missles. It is doubtful it can be used as a bomber. YF23 supposely lost because its rival's team had a better management team , whatever that means.

      like internal bays had anything related with bombers. wake up. ww II is over. we are in 2014. there's no such a thing as a fighter that can't drop bombs.

    • @mrchie888
      @mrchie888 9 років тому +1

      riskinhos You have no clue do you? The point of the internal bays is so the aircraft maintains its stealth abilities. This is refering to the OP thinking that the YF-23 will be revive as a bomber.

    • @riskinhos
      @riskinhos 9 років тому +1

      mrchie888 B-52 must be a fighter since it carries loads of external bombs and missiles.
      as for the revive as a bomber it's ludicrous since it has the same capability as the f-22. that's just retarded.

    I'm sure I'm way off, but YF-23 wings look inherently unstable, thus would provide more agility. I'm saying this because I've read that the 22 was picked because it was more agile...

      The F-22 was chosen over the F-23 because it presented less development risk. The same goes with the Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 engines over the General Electric YF120, they presented less risk in development.
