A small point that pertains to Gluttony: don’t be rude to sound engineers. I once played a show where one of the opening band’s singer started arguing with the sound guy during their set because the engineer was requesting that the singer sing louder since he couldn’t be heard by the audience. The singer goes on to make a big deal out and everyone is just standing there awkward and confused. Great video as always!
@@NateIsLame you think its possible to negotiate with the audience a little bit of the songs they'll put on instagram and a little bit of the sound we want to make? dude the “sloth” section hit hard. i spent 4 years working on an album and towards the end i realized i was being a perfectionist to an annoying degree. set a release date for myself, forced myself to finish that shit, and now i’ve written either a full or partial song every week since it came out last month. sucks knowing just how much time i killed working on those same 10 songs but it was an important lesson in not being a perfectionist. also we’re now playing shows, having fun, making friends, gaining traction, etc. and it’s reminded me why i started playing music in the first place. music is the coolest thing ever
sloth is definitely the most important sin to avoid, like there is no excuse to NOT be making music when programs like garageband exist. squash those fears and download it, you can learn the basics in a day! it makes me sad thinking about how many people out there could be musicians but aren’t, when all that’s holding them back is picking up an instrument or opening up a DAW.

Ik a guy here in FL who’s friends with ADTR and he tells stories about how before they made it big, they’d literally play for peoples bday in their back yards for like 50 bucks (for the whole band) and a slice of cake, and even for free just to do a friend a favor for a party and stuff. He says how chill and nice they are as people and how they’re still the same guys they were back in HS, that the fame didn’t change them and inflate their egos.
Gluttony is a real problem. One time I had 20 minute "suite" that was really 4 songs forcibly squished to together because I thought it would be cool to do. I should have just made the songs separate and just had them put back to back in the album. But, the good thing about music is, as well as art in general, there's always more to explore.

Mannnn idk if youre gonna see this but its so cool how your content keeps coming back in my life. In like 5th grade I first saw your freshman year survival guide and I was like, its gonna be in forever but the night before the first day of highschool, Im gonna rewatch this video again. That time flew by and I did end up rewatching that video right before I went to bed the night before freshman year. Pretty recently I picked up guitar to join a band with my friend, when before I had no interest in music. The band obviously didnt end up working out, but I did discover that I really do enjoy music. I started enjoying more of the emo and punk type stuff (modern baseball, american football, the flat stanleys etc etc) so I was really surprised to see you make content on band stuff specifically in the style of music I really dig. I rewatch the how to start a band video and it always gets me pumped up to pick up my notebook and write my shitty lyrics until they become not so shitty so I can find a band and start playing house shows and all that stuff. Sloth killed me... I also have 0% confidence in myself and I give up so easily. I'm the definition of "half a page of scribbled lines". I felt called out by your words but I needed to hear them...
What do I do if, when I decide to write songs, most of them sound the same as the songs I enjoy listening to? I struggle to come up with anything slightly original these days, and it almost makes me feel like my burning desire to write music is misplaced. I want nothing more than to create original songs, share them with friends and an audience, and I’m fine with doing nothing but basement shows of five people for the rest of my life, but I don’t want to make unintentional carbon copy songs anymore. I just don’t know what to do.
Nothing is original, music is about your personal expression, not about your originality. But if you can’t get past this mindset, delve into theory (specifically harmony and arrangement) make the sound of the band what makes it unique or borrow harmonic concepts from outside your genre. All that matters about your music is that it gets made and it is yours, because the fact that you made it, is what makes it original.
Something will already sound like something. Music has been around for thousands if not millions of years. Someone has already used that chord progression or came up with that riff or whatever. Just make what makes you happy and don't be so set on being 100% original

"If you are making music that is intended to be consumed and appreciated by other people, write music for other people." I dont fully agree with this statement. Although I do agree with the concept of performing for the audience and not yourself/keeping the audience in mind at some point during the writing process. But as far as "who" the songs are written for it is certianly not the audience. I write songs because I seek a creative outlet and a way to express frustrations, trauma, cool experiences, concepts etc. Of course before the song is performed there will be some structuring and such to make the song the most enjoyable and appealing it can be to a general audience. It was not written "for them". Maybe i'm looking too deep into it though who knows but thats just my perspective as it stands right now.
Thanks for the inspiration man and also no I can’t make stuff cause I have literally no resources to a trashy beginner amp a drumset but no sticks and a phone with a broken speaker and it won’t take any inputs and my computer won’t take inputs properly either but I will try to get some stuff down with the little stuff I have
One of the few bands I think uses gluttony but absolutely nobody cares (and for absolutely good reason) is/was Boston. Like Foreplay/Longtime, it uses the same riff throughout when it’s not distorted, but the last time it’s played is distorted and sounds like a full rock song. Plus the song is like 8-10 minutes long but nobody cares, it’s one of those songs/bands you can listen to and forget how long it is because it’s so good.
Wow ngl your comment makes you sound like a complete scumbag. If the only way to get people to sleep with you is to wave status over them… you’re a total loser. A worthless piece of garbage. A waste. A disappointment. Pathetic.
@@NateIsLame getting to the status of being famous/successful enough to sleep with a bunch of beautiful women is an incredibly Herculean, almost impossible task to achieve that 99% of people who try will never achieve. The lucky few who actually achieve that status should be rewarded with sleeping with beautiful fans (consensually of course). Status has been a thing since the beginning of humankind and it comes with many great rewards, sleeping with many beautiful women being one of them.
Women aren’t a prize or reward, they’re people. And if the only way you can sleep with people is to have power over them… you’re a loser unfortunately. I’d argue folks who need money and fame to sleep with folks are bigger losers than normal people. Your mindset is super super gross. I hope you’re like 14 or something, because I’d be concerned if a matured adult would be saying things like this dawg. The 80’s rock and roll mentality sucked and is rightfully dead.
@@NateIsLame Celebrities don't have any actual "power" over their fans. Women choose to sleep with famous people on their own free will, whether it be for clout or to brag to their friends or whatever reason. Women themselves are treating themselves like prizes to famous people because I promise you these same women wouldn't be throwing themselves to janitors or fast food cashiers. Celebrities aren't holding a gun to their fans heads and forcing them to sleep with them. Some women are attracted to high status men just like some men are attracted to women with blonde hair or bigger breasts. Saying men are losers for using their celebrity status to attract women is like saying women are losers for using makeup or push-up bras to attract men. People utilize their assets to make themselves more attractive to potential partners. This is something that even happens in nature and the animal kingdom and is nothing to be ashamed of because everybody does it to an extent. I'm sure if a girl you had a crush on said she likes men who have youtube channels, you wouldn't withhold that information from her because using your status as a youtuber would be a "loser" thing to do. So if a woman says she likes rich, famous musicians, then why wouldn't the rich, famous musician use that status of his to attract the woman? Should he lie and pretend he's a nobody? At the end of the day, it's two consenting, sound-of-mind adults making a decision to make love to each other. I'm not sure why you're being so judgemental about that.

THIS IS REAL, also home is where and BLA mention is crazy, I wills ay tho, I think Brave Little abacus is the band that started that whole meme lol
Thanks dad
OOF. The front porch step reference took me down an AWFUL rabbit hole
The time thing is hard. My band was going pretty strong, my solo stuff was ...coming out lol but i had a kid and had to start a family and were single income so i had to get a soul crushing type job to barley get by and now music is hard to find time for even though its my biggest soul passion. Feels bad man
i think this video is gonna be hard to hear for a lot of people, but i thought you made only good points. i am guilty of a few of these,, as we all are.. thanks for the perspective :)

"If you are making music that is intended to be consumed and appreciated by other people, write music for other people."
I dont fully agree with this statement.
"I want to imbue a sense of authority between us"
YOU'RE NOT MY REAL MUM YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO

Thanks for the inspiration man and also no I can’t make stuff cause I have literally no resources to a trashy beginner amp a drumset but no sticks and a phone with a broken speaker and it won’t take any inputs and my computer won’t take inputs properly either but I will try to get some stuff down with the little stuff I have

Slacker rock artists during the sloth section: 😨
/j
I loved seeing the Sk8bar clip!
Trying desperately to overcome my propensity for sloth but i cannot figure out how to get a band together. Im 38 and i have a tiny social circle.
Shoutout to the heroes who bring the drum kit
I love this new era of Nate Is Lame
Educating people on artistry with an Imagine Dragons band behind you is the definition of bold.
Hahahaha to be fair they were just the support slot for AWOLNATION which is out of view
This video gives me a little bit more faith in humanity
Nate is so sigma!
Sigma balls
Amazing video
>Does that intro need to be 2m long?
*Papa was a rolling stone has entered the chat*
Swans side eyeing in the corner
Day 16 of asking for the senior year survival guide (best UA-cam video ever made)
I MISSED THE SHOW WITH SMILIN VIOLET 😭
One of the few bands I think uses gluttony but absolutely nobody cares (and for absolutely good reason) is/was Boston. Like Foreplay/Longtime, it uses the same riff throughout when it’s not distorted, but the last time it’s played is distorted and sounds like a full rock song. Plus the song is like 8-10 minutes long but nobody cares, it’s one of those songs/bands you can listen to and forget how long it is because it’s so good.
I especially like more than a feeling
the gerogerigegege would like to discuss the 2nd sin with you
AYYY SHOUTOUT NATE
Sloth hit hard. Gonna go make some shit and network. NOW! Also practice for the Big Band show. Man I got time
11:50 Using your status as a rich, famous, successful musician to sleep with beautiful women makes you a…loser? I’m kind of missing the logic here…
Wow ngl your comment makes you sound like a complete scumbag.
