- While the console version of Sonic Colors is well known, what about the DS version? I took a look at both versions & their unique traits.

Originally, the Wii version of Colors was meant to have 2 acts like the DS version but to be around 3-4 minutes long like Unleashed levels
Never knew that before. That’s interesting.
@@RandomAtom ua-cam.com/video/UrAaVLt59Fg/v-deo.html Yep, there was a video made about the original intention for the Colors levels
@@Colepalmer20-20 Well, it might have been 4 minutes per Act, 8 minutes in total for the whole Zone + 1 boss fight in each Zone.
@@Colepalmer20-20 who cares
You're not the only person who would say the DS version is better, which I agree with. Also, the DS version is canon because of the Mother Wisp's cameo in TSR. The Blady Nosehair line from Wii is canon to, though.
Agree. Both versions have parts that are canon. I would say that when it comes to stuff in both versions (i.e., Tails getting temporarily mind-controlled), Wii's interpretation is canon while the stuff introduced in DS (such as Mother Wisp) is canon alongside it.
@@RandomAtom i heard sonic friends being in colors is canon
both versions are supposed to complement each other, I don't understand why they say one is or isn't when they are the same game lmao, atom already said it up there so there I save myself to say that both are canonical.
And also you can play the DS version on mobile with an emulator
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the DS version is superior than the console counterparts. Even the Remastered HD version is inferior to the DS. Not only is Colors the best out of the Rush Trilogy, but I also think it's one of the best Sonic games period.
I grew up with the DS version and was always jealous that I couldn't play the other. Seems like I wasn't missing much.
Random thought, Cube should have been an instant stomp that swaps the blocks instantaneously similar to something like Mighty Switch Force.
If Cube did work like that, that could have opened the door for more interesting ideas. For example, maybe a segment made entirely of blue rings and block could be over a pit so you have to quickly switch the rings and blocks in order to make it across before your power runs out.
I'm not very fond of the Wii version, but I still think you should give it a try. There's stuff to love in that game.
same
I Love Every Game, and I also played the DS Emulation when I was 12, and then now I still love the entire game! And rise of the wisps and Colors Ultimate was a bit buggy, but it has a subtitles disable, where you don’t see the texts and all of that. Also I love the Japanese dub in Colors!
Fun fact: Pontaff wrote the story in Japanese and translated it to English.
@@traviscunningham7062 That’s Good.
bro rise of the wisps is an animation how is it buggy
@@MariadoSocorro-un2mn I meant Colors Ultimate the game. you might've been confused sorry!
I'd easily pick DS without hesitating, it just suits me more
As a kid I did only have access to one version, my parents wouldn't let me buy the game on both Wii and DS. So I got the DS version as it was the system I played more and was the version my friend had.
And having since gone back and played the Wii version I definitely feel I made the right choice, the DS version just has much better pacing and less of a focus on the short single gimmick levels of the Wii version that honestly feel like thwy belong in a Mario game than a Sonic one (this is not a dig at Mario).
Funny that you mention Mario because it was mentioned in an interview that the target audience included those who played Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. I’ll link it when I find it.
Edit: Here it is: spong.com/feature/10110209/Interview-Sonic-Colours-Producer-Takashi-Iizuka/2
“...I wanted to capitalise on the new audience that we gained through the success of the Mario & Sonic games. Those titles in particular really worked well for Sonic as a character because it made our potential audience much broader than existing Sonic fans.”
- Takashi Iizuka
I just recently picked up colors for the ds for $10 at a local pawn shop. I love it!
I was actually introduced to the DS version first before the console and so the console version felt underwhelming to me
Both games are canon, I don't see how everyone is saying that the DS version just because of some cut end games story content
If you 100% colour ds, you get infinite boost, which is literally super sonic but you don't need 50 rings.
It's like Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic games 2010, the DS version is much better.. (Adventure mode)
As a big fan of the rush games, Colours on the DS really is the more fun game between the 2 versions. It’s basically like a 3rd Rush game
more watered down rush
@@Luna-pk7gz Watered down? Colors has more going on than Rush.
@Luna-pk7gz I disagree. Colors DS is better. It doesn't have many bottomless pit or other obnoxious level designs and bad bosses that Rush has nor it doesn't that stupid grindfest for materials & upgraded boats and long ass cutscenes that Rush Adventure suffers.
@@skunthundlerthe cut scenes and story maybe is what he’s talking about the presentation
Colors story was pretty straight forward rush was a lot more adventurous
Colors on the Wii was my first Sonic game ever, and, despite its flaws, i have a massive nostalgia feeling for it, when i discovered a portable version for DS back then in 2018 (before the Switch version was even revealed), i went crazy, and the game surprised me, being the only game I've seen where the portable version is the canon version. The final stage with Super Sonic and all the modding opportunities (like adding different skins to Sonic's model) were something that blew my mind too. The Wii version is the one i love most, and the DS version is the best
@@Colepalmer20-20 it's a better version of reach for the stars, but without a voice
@@LotsOfToubleUsuallySerious no

I actually prefer Sonic Colors on the DS.
They're multiple Pathways that aren't built around grabbing Red Rings, I love going faster by jumping in the loop and there's more for you to do in the DS Version.
Sonic Colors on the Wii feels like a spectacle...the environments are great and make me wish for a hub world, I can go Super Sonic in 3D for 30 seconds before it goes into 2D sections again
Sonic Colors DS > Wii
For me:
Sonic colors ds < wii

Colours DS is one of my most played games ever, I've had it for a huge chunk of my life at this point and always end up revisiting it at least twice a year, to contrast I always hesitate to revisit the Wii version because there's just so many iffy levels even if the majority is admittedly good. I still like Colours Wii, I just vastly prefer DS, great video!
I agree. The DS version is way better than the Wii version.
DS has the better exclusive wisps, better more fleshed out story, an actual Super Sonic boss fight which is canon btw, and the better level design and boss fights.
Sonic Runners and Team Sonic Racing both reference the DS version by featuring/mentioning Mother Wisp and the ending of the DS version, making it also canon.
Indeed.
So glad the DS game is slowly getting more attention recently, I always loved it but couldn't help but to feel like I was missing out because I didn't have the Wii version, nowadays I don't regret it a bit lol because the DS version is imo the best version of the game and I still go back to it every once in a while. I hope that Generations 3DS also starts getting some more attention because I feel it's a solid counterpart to the console versions!
This is a pretty good video. The script is great, and the editing is not bad, especially considering its from a small creator. Friendly tip though, try speaking louder and clearer, especially so you can contrast your normal voice with your sarcastic voice, and be better understood in general. I'm excited to see more in the future.
Thanks for the tip.
I'd add to try and make your voice sound like genuine conversational talk, instead of sounding like you're reading a script. good shit though
Sonic Colors is my least favorite game in the series, but I actually quite like the DS version
I haven't watched most of the video yet, but I want to say that I grew up with a DS and no Wii. The DS version of Sonic Colors was part of my childhood. To this day, I've never played the Wii version or Colors Ultimate, though I've watched UA-cam playthroughs. I generally think that the DS version is better. I cringe at half the things that come out of Sonic's mouth in the Wii version, and the final boss on the DS version actually has more attack patterns than the Wii version. Five (one for each wisp in the DS version other than basic white wisps). That's how many attack patterns the DS version has. As far as I know, the Wii version only has attacks for Spikes, Cube, and Laser. Also, the DS version has a secret boss where you play as Super Sonic, and the Wii version just doesn't for some reason. I assumed that the Wii version was better before having seen it, but when I did watch it, I was just disappointed.
EDIT: After having watched the whole video, I am now very happy. I agree with so many of the points brought up here.
ds verison is goated
plus burst wisp is very satisfying
BURST!
The rush series have my favorite playstyle, guess which Colors version I like more
I grew up with the DS version. So naturally I think that is better.
They’re both good. The real question is, which one is your favorite?
The DS version
DS is THE Sonic Colors game in my opinion
Wii
I haven't even watched the video yet, but I've played both games, and the DS version is better, by far.
Recently, I've been playing every Sonic game (Available for purchase on Xbox) in the lead up to Frontiers (Only up to Unleashed when it released). Anyways, when I finally reached Colors, it felt so disgusting and weird to play. The controls were so terrible, and the Acts were just the worst to get through. I thought I could hold it out. It was short, and Generations was just right there.
I could not. I never try to skip games. But I could just not get through that slog. It was horrible. Meanwhile, I managed to beat every act in the DS one, manage to get almost every Red Star and also the Chaos Emeralds for the Secret Boss. I had a far better time on the DS one than I ever did the Console one.
Well one is a good video game and one is Colors Wii
Sonic Colors DS is one of my first Sonic games and I loved it. Recently I've been hearing more about the Wii version (for obvious reasons), and I was mindblown to learn that it didn't have the Nega Mother Wisp nor the normal Mother Wisp.
I mean, she's the mother of all Wisps, I feel like that's a pretty important plot point !
And now I learn it doesn't have the Red and Violet Wisp ?? First of all, the Red Wisp is the first transformation you get in DS, so the fact that in Wii it's not even there is yet another mindblown for me.
And yeah okay I figured that Purple Wisps are also a kind of Nega-Wisp, but as someone who played the DS version, the main appearance of Nega Wisps is the violet one, so it feels weird that it's not there. But I understand that it's not such a big deal since the purple one serves the same role.
And I personally loved the gallery, it was super interesting to me, especially since yeah I didn't have access to Internet.
As a kid, I remember using the Wisps artworks as a base for drawing Wisp "OCs" that were basically just the Wisps in DS with Yacker's curly hair. Yeah it wasn't very creative but I had fun.
I didn't know much about Sonic's friends back in the day, but now that I do, I feel like going back and do the missions in order to see all the fun interactions ^^
I feel the opposite in terms of content in DS and Wii. While the Wii stages can be pretty short, they still give you the Red Rings as an incentive to explore the stages and find different paths. Not only that but some of the Red Rings are like mini challenges, like the one that can be accessed by Rocket but only if you can dodge some spikes on your way down. It's why Blue Wisp isn't a waste. It's slow paced turning on and off cubes on a normal run which is why I avoid them in some stages unless I can just activate it once. But Red Rings that are on top of blue cubes make platforming on the cubes more faster paced than the normal route, because of how timed they are. In the DS you find the red rings by hitting a jump or not dropping off a route to get them instead of finding them within a fork in the level design where you have to decide whether you want to explore a path with a mini challenge to get the red ring or the faster path. And also the DS Red Rings feel like an additional collectible that you probably won't think about again after finding it, while the Wii Red Rings are essential to the gameplay in how the player engage with the level design where exploring and not taking the fast path isn't just slowing down and finding the collectible but taking a path that's slightly slower but still asks you to be engaged in order to get the collectible. That and Wii Red Rings affect your score. With the Red Rings it feels like there is a consistent additional layer to the Wii stages, and it's why the shorter sub acts felt as engaging as the main acts, giving you the option to do engage with more than one type of platforming (exploration vs reaching the goal), whereas the challenges in the DS just give you one goal and doesn't give the player the freedom to choose the type of gameplay to engage in since it's a mission that requires you to platforming under one rule.
That’s a pretty interesting take on Wii’s levels. You could say looking for the Red Rings calls back to how exploration was rewarded with rings/power ups in the Genesis titles.
yeah, ive had the ds version for a good chunk of my life and it always annoys me when ppl only mention the wii version and its..plot..
They're both 2D games, but DS has better gameplay
i like both equally, and i think the cube wisp was fun
i am also biased because my first gaming device was the wii and my first sonic game was sonic colors on the wii
I knew I wasn’t tripping, the ds version was better, too bad I lost it tho
I own the DS version legitimately since it was my second Sonic game after Unleashed since that game and also Sonic X made me a diehard fan of the series. I first played Wii version on my dentist. And remember the first time I wanted to get the Wii version only because it has more wisps.
Haven’t played the DS Version but I love the Wii Version (Colors Ultimate Now). Either way I’m confident I would still Prefer the Wii version because I prefer 3D Games.
I think the DS version of Sonic Colours is the best
6:40 I hated this world so much bro...
They should’ve done this…
Push back Colors release by a few years to focus on Generations, this way Generations could have a proper story, and if they wanted to, have Jason Griffith in his last role as Sonic.
Then make Sonic Colors a Wii U launch title, make Color have the longer 2 act structure, improve the story and writing, have the super Sonic boss fight at the end, and incorporate the rest of the cast in a similar way to the DS version.
Bam, just fix your game!
The pink wisp is by far my favorite if you just Spam the b button he'll go supersonic speeds
I've never played Colors on the Wii, but I just got the Super Sonic-less ending on the version for the DS and I had a blast with the game! Though because of how much good there is to say about the game, I'd be remiss not to mention that there was exactly one thing I outright disliked - the music track "Cutscene: Happy". It got tired very fast lol
Your first console was the DS? I can relate to that so well. I was 3-5 years old and I always played Lego Batman 1 and 2 on the DS (I don’t remember if it was the DS Lite or DSi I played first) and I played Mario & Sonic Olympic Winter Games on it a lot as well, sadly I don’t know what happened to it’s cartridge, I probably lost it just like I lost Lego Batman 1. Still have the Wii version though but ngl, there were some ways the DS version was better than the Wii, just like this comparison of Sonic Colors. I swear I could beat my mom’s time on speed skating if the motion controls didn’t screw me over, hopefully i’ll get another someday. I even first played Call of Duty on the DS, despite what everyone says it’s really not that bad, and usually they’re not even playing it as intended, they play on a PC Emulator. The DS is definitely one of the best consoles of all time imo. Still use my uncle’s DSi XL to this day (that I totally didn’t steal from him, and he totally cared).
I still 100% prefer the Ds ost. Especially Aquarium Park and Terminal Velocity.
I'm so glad I made childhood memories out of the DS version. I also think it's better than the Wii version. The Wii version is good but it lacks in its story. It doesn't get the characters right and the dialogue and the humor are just not good. The levels feel pretty divisive because there are levels that take a few minutes to finish while others take like 30 seconds. I still think it's pretty solid in terms of gameplay. As for the DS version, the dialogue isn't cringey like in the Wii version, I like how Sonic's friends make appearances, and the Nega Mother Wisp is cool. The levels are more fun on the DS version and they don't feel divisive. Sure there are missions that are short but it makes sense because they're optional side missions that you can do if you want. It doesn't make the levels feel divisive. DS version is pretty great.
I read the Title and thought it was a comparison between the Wii game and the PS4 remaster
Whoops
In my defence, I always saw Colours DS as Rush 3
I love the ds sonic colors cause it's not only quicker and more enjoyable. But unlike rush the bosses aren't scuffed
DS = You love platforming and tricky stunts
Wii = You love the boost effect, the speediness and you just love 3d graphics in general.
Ultimate = No one loves you.
I like the console version however I probably like the wii version it’s the definitive version in my opinion
It's fortunate that Dimps already had a good foundation from the Rush games to use for Colors. Their 3DS versions of Generations and Lost World didn't fare as well, though the latter is certainly ambitious. Also i think all of their weaker hardware variants managed to have better final bosses than the Sonic Team versions. Though that's not saying much with how annoying HD Dark Gaia and Time Eater are.
Both of them got cute cut scenes.
The Wii one just has more bleak forgettable level design.
You forgot DIMPS made the Sonic Advance trilogy. Also, I like to think both versions are canon. After all, why would there just be Sonic and Tails there if the amusement park is open?
Only thing wii has over ds is playable super sonic in normal stages
I only played the DS version and I still love it to this day but I do want to play the wii version someday or wait for a few more patches to colors ultimate
Wonderful Video! I prefer the DS Version but you need a DS of some sort to play it properly. If you're playing on a PC then unless you have two monitors on top of another or are okay with a large amount of empty space everywhere when playing on a Emulator. And the 1 screen hack would hinder the game since you can't see what's above or below you. so you can't see stuff like Spikes or Enemies. I was thinking about learning how to code so I can make a port for PC where you could see everything.
I can see playing on original hardware being preferable because if you use an emulator, you’ll likely have to put the controller down to use a mouse for the special stages & that can hurt the experience.
@@RandomAtom Yeah :( there's no definitive way to play the games outside of the DS which sucks!!!
@@RandomAtom Oh also did you wanna play Colours DS online sometime???
@@prestonanderson1719 Colors is mostly a single player game and the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service has been down for years so unfortunately, it is not possible 😅
@@RandomAtom No it is still possible. You can still play DS Games Online. You can even do it with a original cartridge. Just look up "How to play DS Games in 2022" and you will find a really good video on how to do it.
Both are great. The Wii version was my first and is still my favorite Sonic game ever. I got the DS version because I liked the Wii one so much. They are both great, and I’m still disappointed they didn’t add the DS soundtrack as an option in colors ultimate.
That idea about the DS soundtrack being included in Ultimate sounds neat.
@@RandomAtom I'm actually working on a Sonic Colors OST evolution video series inspired by the "Mario Kart 8 - Then and Now" by The Luigi Master, Skipper9365 (aka Toby Bailey) and NintendoGameTuber (will also do Sonic 3 & Knuckles later on)
generally, both are my favorite sonic games in the series. i have many memories playing both as a kid and they both were extremely fun, and i liked the style of the ds version as its take was pretty unique
You know what, I don't get why Sega didnt go all out and Remake and mix both Versions of Sonic colors together!
So in ds we got a fireball and a blackhole
And in wii we got classic Sonic, tails, chain chomp, and a block.
the handheld sonic games are all really solid - 3ds generations is also really good
Sonic color was the very first game of sonic i played in my whole life , and Its good
11:23
Well, both can be canon. Just the DS exclusive events just happens off screen in the Wii version.
True. I was mostly joking in that segment, but I was mainly taking about what dialogue in the main story was canon although that is inconsequential as the story is still the same.
This proves that the DS version is the definitive version over the original and "Ultimate" versions.
ds has two good exclusive wisps, while colors has 4 garbage exclusive wisps, wii also handles all the shared wisps much worse, and ds lets you instant kill bosses with enough skill
Void involves actual gameplay with moving through fans and trying to get large enough in the time limit, frenzy is just nothing
I didn’t even know they had a handheld sonic colors game the I don’t think I would of known about sonic colors if I didn’t went to foster care
sonic colors is a very nostaligic game to me it perfectly captures the design asstetics of the early 2010s
Are you going to compare the xbox360 version Sonic generation to 3ds version
I preferred sonic colors ds and ultimate
Great video!
Thanks!
This video is great! Only complaint I have is that you can't compare Colours Wii's graphics if you're using fan made mods, as it isn't indicative of the game's original graphics
When I was talking about Wii’s graphics, I was referring to how the game looked without the texture pack. Probably should have made that clear 😅
the final boss in ds felt way for fulfilling that the wii/remastered edition
I love the ds version, way better than wii, plus it's rush 3
DS all the way i love the wii one but ds is just wayyyy more better for me
All I can say is... There was a Wii version of Colors?
One thing to mention while the HD release sonic colors ultimate is generally the same as the wii version. It Does add some new content. Like the new Ghost wisp which allows you to phase through certain walls. Also Sonic's shoes, gloves, and trail are customizable after collecting and purchasing with tokens that are found throughout each level.
I forgot the Jade Wisp existed lol
Dimps made advance, battle, pinball party as well.
No copyright law in the world is gonna stop me
I enjoyed seeing someone delve into this, W vid my friend
Thanks!
I love that a lot of new sonic videos like these! I can't wait to watch more!
Honestly the DS version is better than ultimate
The DS version sucks, did like 2 stages and never touched it again.
Sounds like a skill issue
Funny thing is the ds version of the game is considered to be the canon bc the void wisp is in the ending cutscene in the wii version for some reason? And burst appears in force so yea it’s cannon
Ok I'ma say it
The boss music on the Wii SUCK compared to the DS version, the DS version focuses way more on percussion and melody then wiis focus on synth
Do you have any thoughts about the Ultimate versions of these songs?
@@RandomAtom I feel like the ultimate arnt the best remixes, they do incorporate some ideas from the DS but the main melody is pushed back further for extra instruments and way more synth
DS colours is literally just watered down Rush. that's all it is. definition of mid imo and not like story really matters in sonic imo.
Between both Rush games, which do you prefer? Also what did you think of the Wii Colors?
Loved both versions of those games as a kid Colors is just one of those games I seem to love regardless of its flaws
"No copyright law in the universe can stop me!" is one of my favorite stupid lines from those games
I first played it on DS when Christmas came. I never knew it was on the Wii will 2016. DS is the best, and has so many cameos of other characters and with missions. It has amazing an amazing story.
I’ve never played the DS version. My only consoles are the Switch and the Wii, so I have both the Wii and Ultimate version. I’ve always been curious about the DS version, however. I’ve seen images of the DS version’s cover on many Sonic videos but I’ve never really seen much criticism of the DS version. I’m glad I saw this because you really made me understand what I think is all I need to understand about the game as someone who hasn’t played it but wants information about it. Anyways, I really agree with a lot of the points made for the Wii version in your review! My personal opinion on this, I really like Sonic Colors! Yeah, the levels are really short and there should just be three acts that are like 2-3 minutes but I still manage to get much fun out of most of them. Sure, the bosses are definitely repetitive and this isn’t a 3D game (also I have no opinion on the wisps but they definitely overstay their welcome in later games) but it’s a pretty decent Sonic game for me. I’m definitely interested in playing Sonic Colors DS now, so this video definitely benefited me.
