Hi Larry, you are on point with your takes on the Feel Flows set. My go to is usually either the 2000 remasters or the original vinyls when it comes to Beach Boys. Though the Feel Flows and Sail On Sailor set are still worth the money for the bonus tracks only. They left the best songs off from the actual albums! You might want to check out the Sunshine Tomorrow 2 CD set which has the best sounding version of Wild Honey + amazing extra content. Also you'd love the (digital only) release of the Friends sessions. A lot of cool tracks to listen to on it with the same Friends vibe and style.

I love the 2000 “two-fers” of the post 60s Beach Boys catalogue. They sounded great. But the Feel Flows bonus tracks are truly fantastic and so it’s worth it just for those.

A lot of Beach Boys fans suspect that Mark Linett's hearing has slipped in the last few years, as the latest remasters and remixes he's created have been a little all over the place. The bonus tracks sound better, but a lot of people still weren't happy, so a dedicated fan mixer remixed/re-EQ'd the whole box set and put it up as an online download

Larry..love those Kinks and Procol Harum reissues..I had to stop the video and immediately go to Amazon and order that 50th anniversary Pet Sounds set..the good thing about that large opening is the discs won’t get as scratched when taking them in and out..I would just put the booklet in the middle..a remix and newly remastered does not alway mean better..sending love to Mittens❤❤❤❤

I personally have a love/hate relationship with digipaks & CD slipcases.
I do like how they feel closer to LPs but the lack of plastic inner sleeves for the slipcases really urks me.
It's already bad enough when you buy a new LP & they don't include a proper inner sleeve but it annoys me even more with CDs. Especially the ones that have quite a tight fit.
I now invest in CD inner sleeves, specially for this reason.
I've also noticed box sets have also joined the slipcase design.

Hey Larry, enjoyed your last video on The Beach Boys and agree with your critique of the packaging issues. I will also agree that “Feel Flows” box and its companion “Sail On Sailor” have mixing issues as well. They just don’t compare well with previous Beach Boys remasters and box sets that sound uniformly good which is a shame because content wise The Beach Boys have been hitting home runs with their boxes so it’s a shame they’ve been bogged down with poor mastering as of late.

The packaging for The Beach Boys' "1967: Sunshine Tomorrow" 2 CD set is much better. It's in a standard 2 CD jewel case. I agree about the sound quality on the "Feel Flows" 2 CD set. And the "Sail On Sailor 1972" 2 CD/ box set. I think the 2000 remasters are better for all four albums. But, you do get nice bonus tracks. I'd recommend the big box set for "Sail On Sailor 1972". The 1972 Carnegie Hall show makes the big set worthwhile. But get it cheap.

  • @danerd8978

So the 2000 remasters for Sunflower on onward were suppose to have Bonus Tracks but, they got cut. I think it was due to sales or Capitol/EMI at the time. The rough Mixes for those cds were found in a record shop as CDRs. So they did slip out eventually. Those actually sound amazing compared to the recent releases.

It was you who got me into The Kinks in earnest, Larry. My copies of Kinks, Face to Face and Something Else (as well as Lola and Show Business) are just like yours, but my Preservation Society isn't super-deluxe; it just has a single disc and a small booklet. So I'll need to get the deluxe edition of that one.
And I always appreciate your insight into Can. All I've got now is Tago Mago, but I want to go much further than that.
With Procol Harum, I just can't get past "A Whiter Shade of Pale," a song I loathe and which prevents me from pursuing that group at all.
I can't offer any insight on the Beach Boys, but I wouldn't be surprised if the bonus tracks on the Sunflower/Surf's Up set have the same problem that you encountered with the remixed albums. Occasionally a bad product gets loose, unfortunately.

The Beach Boys CD reissues are a minefield. I would say if you want the pre Pet Sounds albums and singles and just want them to sound really good I'd suggest for the albums the 1989 Japan CD reissues or the more recent Kevin Gray remasters and for the singles get the Steve Hoffman DCC version of Endless Summer or the Thirty Years of Good Vibrations box set. Thirty Years also gives you a decent amount of Smile session tracks.
For a standalone mono Pet Sounds get the 2014 Japan SHM CD, for an expanded look with bonus stuff and stereo and surround mixes get the 50th anniversary box.
For the 60's post Pet Sounds/ Smile period I would say either go back into the late 80's Japan CDs or get one of the two issues of the Capitol twofer CDs (1993 and 2000) and for deeper dives supplement them with The Beach Boys' copyright extension titles from this era.
For Sunflower to Keepin' The Summer Alive I'd recommend the original late 80's and early 90's Caribou/ Brother CDs or the 2015 HD Tracks downloads. For a deeper dive into Sunflower and Surf's Up get the Kevin Gray SACD's and the Feel Flows and Sail on Sailor collections but with Feel Flows and Sail on Sailor for some reason they included very poorly done remasters of Sunflower, Surf's Up, Carl and the Passions and Holland. Ignore that part and go right to the session and outtake stuff.
If you go into the 80's albums, most CD pressings will be okay, so will the HD Tracks downloads. If you really want Still Crusin' the CD that was basically an EP of new at the time tracks like Kokomo and an EP of 60's Beach Boys songs that had been on movie soundtracks at the time, check thrifts, it's a common find.

Completely agree with you about the Sunflower remaster on Feel Flows. They’ve boosted both the bass and treble way too high, so I have to turn it up to really get anything out of it, and that just ends up hurting my ears. I have an original American promo vinyl copy, and it sounds so much better - the 2000 remaster sticks much closer to that. The 2019 master of Surf’s Up sounds good enough to me, but I don’t know what happened with Sunflower. Either someone’s hearing is shot or their speakers were blown, or something…

    • @TheCanadianStudmuffin

  • @zachwalentiny

This is kind of off topic, but one thing that really pisses me off is when I order CD's online and the cases arrive cracked or damaged. And most of the time, it's the CD's that come from Amazon that arrive damaged more so than Ebay or some other website. But what makes it worse is Amazon usually refuses to replace or refund a damaged item unless you return the damaged item to them. At that point it's like why would I waste my time returning a 12 dollar CD when there is a chance the replacement will arrive damaged as well lol

Not a huge fan of The Beach Boys, but I’m a sucker for twofers. So I have all their albums on those. In jewel cases, so no issues. They probably don’t sound as good as newer versions, but I’m not too concerned. I agree on Surf’s Up, btw. Best album after Pet Sounds.
And those Kinks ones are great, have all those. I have two deluxes of Arthur, because I didn’t have the one with the lost Dave Davies album in it. Learned about it from one of your videos.

    • @nicholasperl
      @nicholasperl Місяць тому +2

Actually, I'd say the twofers hold up pretty well against the newer remasters. My favorites are the Japanese Pastmasters CDs. I've only recently started collecting them because they're expensive, but they're essentially a 1:1 flat transfer of the original tapes. They sound gorgeous

Lately I became a big fan of Procol Harum, I heard their debut and Salty Dog and they are amazing. It's really suprising because there was time when I didn't like them.
I am not a big fan of Kinks but I think that Musswell Hillbillies is excellent. Still for example Lola, or Villige Green are pretty great albums it's just not my thing.
I thought once that I don't like Beach Boys, or that I like only Pet Sounds. Lately I listen to Friends and it was EXCELLENT. Thanks for your review. Last night I listen to Pet Sounds again and it hit me how awesome this album is. This might me one of my favorite albums. I think I'll hear the other albums by Beach Boys.

Larry you need to buy Wild Honey and Love You. Both excellent albums and I think Love You is right up there with Pet Sounds. It was rated the 25th best synth rock album of all time. Brian does pretty much all of the instrumentation with the exception of a few drum fill and guitar licks. It's a true master piece. Holland and So Tough are pretty good too but there's two members, Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Faatar that aren't original members and it definitely changes their sound. Great albums though but it takes a few listens to really hear and appreciate them. Also, you have to check out Dennis's solo album, Pacific Ocean Blue. It's great.

No real rant on your part, Larry, but CD packaging can get out of hand, I really don't care for some of the packaging. Take for instance Grateful Dead's Get Shown The Light (2017) four consecutive shows from May 1977 spread out over 11 discs. Each of the 4 shows is packaged in large 9x9 inch flimsy sleeves, (oversized wallets) that have some cutout sections, which makes the sleeves even more flimsy. All excellent shows, but I'd rather have them packaged in the standard-size (5x5.5")multi-disc jewel cases or digipaks or CD wallets. Both editions of this release are sold out.
Oh, yeah for the "bassy" Beach Boys CDs, turn down the bass on your amp.
