    Yes, violins. A few of them! ELO's prolific use of strings is not only rare for a rock band, but but elevates their arrangements to become unforgettable songs! PLEASE react to Concerto for a Rainy Day off the Out of the Blue album. You'll hear an amazing assortment of orchestral sounds within the whole suite of songs. You may have already reacted to Mr. Blue Sky, which is the last track of the concerto.

    This song is such a vibe. ELO was so far ahead of their time. Jeff gets a lot of credit, and justifiably so, but let’s not forget Mik Kaminski, Kelly Groucutt, Melvin Gale, Richard Tandy, Bev Bevan, Hugh McDowell, Louis Clark. Great groundbreaking band. ✌️

    Early AND later music from ELO was superlative! “Fire on High” is a great song to react too also. The entire “ Time” album from ‘81 was so far ahead of it’s “time” that many hated it, but it is in my Top 10 concept albums ever. Tremendous band.

      Same here. Born in 73, and I have a brother 8 years older than myself. Thank God he liked good music. Beatles, Zeppelin, Elo, Journey, Clapton, AC/DC, etc... My dad was/is into the Beach Boys, Buddy Holly, Beatles again, Elvis, and my Mom liked ABBA, Air Suppy, Seals and Crofts, etc. I'm glad I grew up listening to everything.

    3:50 That's a violin being ran through an, as it was called in the 1970's, Phase shifter. Nowadays they're called flange or flanger. basically, it gives it that swishy, spacey sound. In the 1960's it was created, ironically, by mistake, by the group, the small faces --- on a song called "Itchycoo Park". what happened was, the producers were trying to double up on the singers voice, to give it more punch in the track. Well, they were using vari-speed tape decks and someone accidentally had the speed control on one of the decks slightly slower. This caused that effect. The producer about sh!t! He went on a tirade! "you're fired, you SOB!" The band heard the ruckus and came running to see what happened. The producer told them, in some very angry terms. The band was like, let's hear it and they did and the band went, "That sounds COOL!" The producer thought they were crazy. So, as it was, it was used in a few places that the band chose. and so, that's the story of the creation of phase shifting in recordings.

    Yes, I’d say those are violins too. A viola is smaller than a violin. And yes Dee, a cello is bigger than a violin.
    Love this song!
    Oops! Corrected! 👇🏽

    • @Straydogger
      @Straydogger Рік тому +4

      The viola is larger than the violin. The violin’s body is usually about 35 centimetres (14 inches) long. The viola, on the other hand, can be as big as 45 centimetres (18 inches) long. In addition, the viola is wider.

    Electric light orchestra Incorporated lots of electric violin, cellos and many other string instruments. Chod,Dee ,you need to check out some of the live concert footage of ELO there's some real good stuff out there !Old and excellent new material and it all sounds great. In some of the videos they had a pretty big orchestra backing the band and it's a wall of sound with flawless arrangements and precision. Nothing quite like an ELO concert, they basically took over with orchestral type rock after the Beatles broke up. ELO picked up the torch influenced by Beatles albums such as Sgt Pepper's and Magical Mystery Tour. Jeff Lynne is a genius,he became very good friends and a bandmate of George Harrison later on in George's life.The Traveling Wilburys for example. I would have to say that had Jeff Lynne been born a few years earlier he could have fit right in as a Beatle, he really is an extension of The Beatles with his influences and styles. If you'd like to see a perfect example of this, check out George Harrison's album Cloud 9 the song is called When We Was Fab, it's George Harrison and Jeff Lynne with Ringo on drums and it is as Beatley as any Beatles song!! I know you will dig it Chod. I love watching yours and Dee's videos. Also Chod your a man after my own heart ,you're a guy who loves the "feel" of the music. You're an old soul who "gets it" I also just nearly fell out of my chair when Dee mentioned Summer Breeze because that's a total "feel" song. You put that song on,Summer Breeze and lyrically and musically you can almost feel that Summer breeze straight off the bat!! You guys are great. Not to mention another great one by Boz Skaggs & Duane Allman..Loan Me a Dime. The feeling put into that song just brings you somewhere else and keeps you there!!

    The early stuff was more the influence of co-founder Roy Wood who was doing medieval sounding songs that were very heavy on the stringed instruments & left after the second album. Lynne eventually gravitated to more commercial pop/rock with guitars & synths & by the end of the 1970's/early 1980's the string section were pretty much redundant.

    In the early years of the group's existence, there was a real ability to dive into the artist's true expression of their sound, but when the 80's and MTV hit, they had to go with the flow. Those band then produces what was called Corporate Rock which was watered down. This was why bands that had to go that route were not appreciated by the hardcore early fans of their music. The latter music was done for profit, instead of continuity
