I've seen this show many times. All over the world. NYC, Chicago, LA, SF, Seattle, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, London, Madrid, Berlin, Moscow, Oslo, Tokyo, Bejing, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Athens, Istanbul, Quebec, Montreal, Mexico City, and many South American cites. I did see this rendition in Finland 30 years ago. By far, this remains the very WORST rendition of Evita. Choreography is terrible. Voices are horrible. Dancing lacks substance. My opinions of course.

Missing is that awesome raked stage deck with the textured floor that has rows of lights that light up from underneath and in the center there's a circle that lights up as well. The screen above doesn't move like it does in the full scale version. And it's also missing the row of lights that beam down on the floor from the bottom portion of the screen. The choreography is very simplified here. Should be much more forceful and thrilling. Pro dancers not needed on this tour, I see. The orchestrations are horribly thinned out and very weak! They produce a whimper and every now and then you hear the thundrous timpani but why bother when everything else sounds reedy and thin? The costumes stay true to the original designs but those wigs are tragic! The balcony does do that thrilling full turn after "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." I can hardly see any projections. Did this tour even have them? David Hersey's original lighting design seems to be missing something. Maybe it was dumbed down like the rest of this tour. The cast is VERY good. Kris Montgomery as Eva is excellent. My first viewing of her was on another video also here on UA-cam which is filmed from a distance and you can't see expressions and I was also very distracted due to construction going on outside all day, so my initial review of Montgomery's Eva wasn't good. I said she was sort of common and generic. After watching this video, I have to say I take back what I said. Kris is a fantastic Evita! I really, really like her voice. One of the most powerful I ever heard. She does have a sort of girl-like quality to her voice which at first seems miscast but you soon forget about that and notice her amazing range and very effortless execution of that demonic score! She definitely ranks among the best like the Evas from the early days that all had their own unique stamp that you didn't soon forget like Patti LuPone, Loni Ackerman, Valerie Perri, Elaine Paige, Florence Lacey, and Derin Altay. While my review on the scaled down sets and simplified choreography, orchestrations, and lighting of this tour stands, the cast makes up for all of that and I can say I enjoyed this performance far more than I expected to.

Proving again that you may be able to hit the notes (sort of) but without star quality or acting ability, Eva goes flat......
