I love a pot of cabbage every once in awhile. Not into the dumplings though but that is just me. I don't think anyone watches your videos for the kind of house you live in. they come here to learn from you.

My grandma used to make something similar. Instead of the dumplings she added sliced potatoes. She called it bubble & squeak because of the sound it made when it cooked. The onions would carmalize with the cabbage and the potatoes would crisp up. Wow, I can still taste it. Thanks for the memory! :-)

That’s a brilliant way to stretch a meal and add some heartiness to something that was/is cheap to get. My grandmother did this too. And she said cabbage was a staple. As were dumplings because you could fill a family up on them. They used a lot of animal fat because that’s what they had on the farm. Excellent recipe Jaime. And your kitchen WORKS, it’s clean and your family is happy...to heck with anyone who don’t like it! Bunch of priss pots can hush it!! Blessings always~Lisa

Loved the lighting and the occasional blue glow. Thought it was perfect. And your kitchen reminds me of when Jordan and I started-out in an apartment with no kitchen. We were cooking in a borrowed electric skillet on a 2x2 remnant piece of 3/4" plywood on the floor. That was our stove and counter. We washed dishes in the bathtub. It was a glorious day when we installed a kitchen sink. Eventually, we got some fold-out tables like yours. Graduated to filthy second-hand cabinets and countertops off Craigslist. Cleaned 'em up, painted them, and made a beautiful kitchen. Still... the glory days are sitting on the floor making ground beef with peas n' cheese, or grilled cabbage in that borrowed electric skillet. Three years later, we live in a nice, brand new house, but to us, your kitchen is about as romantic as it gets.

My Mom calls those dumplings, spaetzle. We grew up on it. Her Mom was of German origin. Mom made it like you did but she doesn't add any thing other than salt and pepper. Spaetzle is basically an egg noodle. She would drop it in chicken soup by the half tsp full at the end of cooking or cook them in water and fry them in butter. When she fried them they were the size of pot stickers or less. We kids would fight over them. I add sage or any spice I feel like. Love these things. You don't need a spaetzle maker either.

I grew up on cabbage & dumplings. Every time we went to my grandmum's this is what we asked for. Like you she used a little bit of bacon grease and it really does make a huge difference in the end flavor. The Great Depression era cooking was a time when people learned to make great flavored dishes from very limited resources. Thank you for sharing! The only difference I noticed is my grandmum added a tiny bit of dill seed. Of course a little dill went into so many of her dishes I think she just had a love for it.

The first time I made this the kids weren't huge fans. The next time I fried up some ginger and garlic in the bacon fat before adding my veg mix. I did a blend of cabbage, onion, graded rutabaga, and grated carrot. I also added some soy sauce.
This is a great, versatile recipe and one I will be making often from now on.

This vid brought such a huge smile to my face, so of course I had to grab a head of cabbage and whip up a batch. My PA Dutch great grandma called this dish Haluska, a definite family favorite. Mom usually served it as side to crispy fried kielbasa - and some baked beans. Talk about comfort food! It's nice to see other families continue to enjoy some of the simple dishes many of us grew up eating.

I love cabbage and I can’t wait to make this recipe. The house looks just fine and you look marvelous in that lighting.
My sister and I were talking the other day about gratitude. Think about the housing you saw in Nepal. Think about all the people who live in other third world countries that basically live in a cardboard box. No wood stove, no stove, no solar oven, no vehicle, etc, etc.
We have so much here that it’s sometimes not easy to see what we have. I was complaining about a home repair and she said what if you didn’t have the money to do it? Or what if you didn’t have a house to repair. You know it’s the whole forest for the trees thing.
Ok, I’m stepping off my soap box now. We all have so much to be thankful for.

I made this, and it was great. I love a thrifty tasty meal. We made it again, used coconut oil and bacon grease. Made a sauce using 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce, 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons mirin, and some pepper flakes. I made the dumplings smaller. Added the sauce after cooking and stirred it in. Dressed it with raw chopped green onion. It was a lovely supper.
Thanks for sharing your recipes, Jamie.

Cabbage is an under rated food staple. Most people only think of cole slaw, but there are great recipes using this leafy bowling ball (yeah, that's what we used the old ones for)
For a twist, try making Russian Perogies. I prefer the cabbage-boiled egg mixture, but mash potato-garlic is pretty good also. Stewed apples, cherries can be use for the sweet tooth. The perogi dough remains the same for all. Heck, you can put ground meat in also. Pretty versatile.

One of the things I love about UA-cam is all the knowledge you can gain, it might be rough around the edges but when I do it myself it all comes together. Go ahead and make these videos as they are really neat. I wish I had my grandparent's cook books but they got lost in a fire many decades ago.
One a different note, can all of you believe how many politics ads are on UA-cam this election season? To me is seems worse than the 2016 election cycle.

I will have to add cabbage to my list and this looks good. The sun cooker brought me to your channel.

Instead of the dumplings, I often cook ground beef with the cabbage and onion. I guess you could still add dumplings to it in the end. Also, I like a bit of coriander with the cabbage, as well as salt and pepper. Glad to see you again.

Jamie, that looks amazing. I think I might add some liquid aminos . Thanks for the idea.

That's a lot like the Japanese dish 'okonomoyaki' which is cabbage and noodles and whatever else you decide to put in

That looks tasty. I'm a really good cook. But that looks like it's worth trying. I don't have cabbage right now, but when I do I will be making this. I'll add some dry mustard powder to this recipe 'cuz mustard & cabbage were made for each other ;)

Wow, this takes me back to when my father who was Siciliano born 1899-1967 would make this all the time for us kids.

I'm Italian, my grandmother, during the depression, made cabbage and polenta, just about the same thing, just added garlic to the spices. Boy would that fill a tummy!

Just made this! It's delicious! I did throw some cajun seasoning in the dumplings. They were awesome. First time making dumplings! Didn't know they were so simple and delish. Thanks for sharing this!

May not be pretty - but definitely underscores you do not need a lot of infrastructure to get this done!
