A fantastic piece, Chris. Thank you. Had goosebumps for almost the entire run of the video. I felt particularly moved by seeing and hearing the Mongolian elements that took part in the ceremony; though he's a naturalized Japanese citizen, and though Sumo is and will remain distinctly Japanese, it's obvious he loves Mongolia still, and it warms my heart to see cultures share deep respect for one another and mutually partake in a significant cultural event. Hakuho surely worked harder than any other to make that possible, though Asashoryo took the first step. I'm so grateful I got into Sumo in may 2021 just in time to learn about Sumo and Hakuho to realize the significance of his last Basho in July. Even though I've just seen one basho with him in it, thanks to all I've read about and seen of Hakuho (and your channel is a significant part of it) I still feel like he's missing. The last bout with Terunofuji is still my favorite Sumo moment, and I hardly think it will be surpassed, but rather magnified, throughout the years. However, it's not all gloom, not at all. In some ways I think Hakuhos, or rather Miyaginos, story has just had it's first triumphant part finalized. I think a glowing future is ahead for Sumo with him as the head of his stable and a proponent of Sumo. In some ways I think this was just a beginning for something maybe even greater. I very much hope so at the very least.
And so goes the greatest of us all, that who we should strive to become. The most dominant athlete in recent memory and possibly ever to live, unrivaled and unparalleled. We will never see his like again. Rest now, Hakuho. Miyagino, may you rise.

Thank you for enjoyable Sumo! His son desires a live outside Sumo and we hope for his best. The effort to honor his father he showed in the final match was beautiful.
Wow, I knew this moment was coming ,I could feel it, I wish I had more time for Sumo, but such is life, I am so happy I saw this wonderful man in so many tournaments, What a beautiful and such respectful ceremony this was to watch. I have never actually seen a retirement to this fashion as many of the Sumos I follow do not have the reputation of this man here. My oh my, I could only imagine being there
A big part of the event, or so it seemed, was highlighting the sheer value of the Hakuho brand for the JSA... with all that it entails. He whole-heartedly embraces the land that saw him thrive, and all that it represents, but still proudly represents his land of birth. His brand alone stands strong and proud on its own, yet he has impacted so many and so powerful that, should he (or his allies) ever need help, people will trip over each other to do so, even at a premium (he "only" got 300 cutters... yet, at such an exorbitant price tag, it highlights the level of support that the Hakuho brand commands). His Miyagino stable is already full to the brim with future stars, while the respect that his name commands, and the work he has put on elevating amateur sumo, will provide his stable with a pipeline of strong, proven rikishi, to dominate the sumo world for years to come. If the JSA wishes to acquire all of those boons that Hakuho brings, he is but glad to provide them... as long as the JSA accepts and embraces him as he is.
The man the myth the legend. Generations in the future will speak for he’s achivements and he will always be remembered. Long live hakuho enjoy the rest of your life.🙏
I'm very happy and proud to witness this occasion for Hakuho's retirement. It was my last class of secondary school when I started watching Sumo Tournaments, the incredible thing that happened is when NHK World Channel releases the Basho is the late night in my country (0:30 AM) local time, but I was happy to wait to watch Sumo Wrestling. But today it is easy to watch on Sumo every time I want in UA-cam. That was my story in this amazing Sumo event. Hakuho, we will miss your spirit fighting. Thank you Grand Sumo.
This is a wonderful video, Chris. You have done a great thing with this channel. Your videos are not only invaluable documentation, but masterful examples of journalistic coverage. You are among a pantheon of sports journalists.
For people who haven't seen other videos of the event, it wasn't just about the money though this is the main reason for these events and its good to hear from Chris how it all works. But much more than that it was an emotional occasion - Hakuho was fighting back the tears on more than one occasion.
How did I miss this?!...started the day with Shozan's retirement which had me in tears. Hakuho's on the other hand left me speechless....and made my day! Nothing compares to Sumo - nothing!!!....🙂
Thank you so much Chris, this is worthy way of the emotions and atmosphere at the ceremony and give us a glimpse in to us who could not witness it in person. It is a new day in Sumo
Wonderfully and thoughtfully narrated Chris, thank you! That was well said of his son. If his son chose to sumo, SURELY the expectations placed on him would be massive. There will likely never be another Hakuho, not in our lifetimes anyway. Looking forward to seeing what his stable will produce!
It must have been so moving to finally hear his homeland’s anthem being played at the venue. Let’s hope that he is treated with the respect he deserves for his singlehanded dominance in the sport.
I'm not going to ignore Fing Steven Seagal got to snip Hakuho's hair.. like WHAT THE ACTUAL F**K?! Do we need to go over the list of atrocities that man has to his name.. and he took part in this?!
I'm with you. Out of respect for Chris I'm not saying what's really on my mind. Anyone here can certainly read up on Seagal's nefarious life and activities.
I consider myself blessed to have witnessed him in his prime. I was a fan of his biggest rival Harumafuji, but towards the tail end of Hakuho's career I started to realize, that I had to enjoy every single basho, every single bout, because I won't see his equal in my lifetime ever again.
One would try and use Legendary as a word to describe Hakuho Sho and his career as a Rikishi and Yokozuna, but I think his name suffices on it's own. Those who know about him, witnessed him, and will hear about him, will all know the name. Hakuho
The lady at 1:06 caught my eye as it seems like she’s holding Takakeisho’s head from this angle, lol. The GOAT shall bring us many champions as an oyakata, sumo’s future is bright!
As an American who just started watching g sumo a few years ago, I'm a bit sad that I only got to bear witness to the tail end of an illustrious career. But man, in spite of that, am I grateful. Grateful that I got to see that last glorious chapter of the greatest Yokozuna to ever do it. It's going to be a long, long time before we ever see someone reach the heights that this man did.

Long live hakuho enjoy the rest of your life.🙏
Thank you for bring this coverage! And thank you Hakuho for your greatness!
This is truly sad to see for me. I first started watching when he became Yokozuna. His reign on top was truly legendary
Thank you, Chris! As always your report is the best! Thank you for explaining us the inner working of this great ceremony!!!
Was waiting for your notification for this! Thank you, Chris!
Thanks for this Chris. I'm so happy I got to watch the last few years of Hakuho
This is a wonderful video, Chris. You have done a great thing with this channel. Your videos are not only invaluable documentation, but masterful examples of journalistic coverage. You are among a pantheon of sports journalists.
Thanks Chris for your coverage of this and your dedication to this wonderful sport.
now we wait 22 years to see Kanreki dohyo-iri from Hakuho
Still in awe of Chiyonofuji performing his while he was nearing death's door. He still looked great, all things considered.
For people who haven't seen other videos of the event, it wasn't just about the money though this is the main reason for these events and its good to hear from Chris how it all works. But much more than that it was an emotional occasion - Hakuho was fighting back the tears on more than one occasion.
Exquisite package and fitting tribute!
How did I miss this?!...started the day with Shozan's retirement which had me in tears. Hakuho's on the other hand left me speechless....and made my day! Nothing compares to Sumo - nothing!!!....🙂
I´m in tears, thanks Hakuho!
Thank you so much Chris, this is worthy way of the emotions and atmosphere at the ceremony and give us a glimpse in to us who could not witness it in person. It is a new day in Sumo
Tears in my eyes. Wished I could have been there. Thank you so much for giving us an inside feel of this historic moment.
superb editing Chris. I love the last encore!
Thanks Chris.
This must have been a total thrill. Congratulations on being there and thank you for sharing with us. Wow
Hakuho, you are the greatest ❤️ 🙌 ♥️
It must have been so moving to finally hear his homeland’s anthem being played at the venue. Let’s hope that he is treated with the respect he deserves for his singlehanded dominance in the sport.
Wow! That was amazing. I think its fair to say we miss him greatly, but excited to see what his future brings us!
I was eagerly awaiting your take on this, Chris.
Hoshoryu the next Mongolian Star
The greatest of all time ❤
I'm not going to ignore Fing Steven Seagal got to snip Hakuho's hair.. like WHAT THE ACTUAL F**K?! Do we need to go over the list of atrocities that man has to his name.. and he took part in this?!
I'm with you. Out of respect for Chris I'm not saying what's really on my mind. Anyone here can certainly read up on Seagal's nefarious life and activities.
Japan doesn't care
C’était un honneur de le voir combattre et porter le sumo à ce niveau d’excellence
You did an excellent job on this video, thank you for sharing as always! I hope you had a great time chilling with our boy Hakuho!
You made a beatifull video out of it Chris, thank you for this perfect summary and tribute.
Thanks for covering the event so well
Amazing video as always, Chris! Thanks a lot for explaining so much interesting information that was hidden for me :)
This is fricking AWESOME, thank you so much for taking time to share great content like this. 🙇
Excellent clip. Appreciate your effort!
Thank you for this. I have missed Hakuho terribly and now this surely means I can never expect to see him on the dohyo ever again. 😢
You will see him around it though. He will be a grander attendant now with his presence on the clay through his charges. 🤟😎☮️🇦🇺👍
Didn't like seeing mostly only Mongolians standing for their national anthem if that is what that clip is from. I'd have stood out of respect 😅
That's what I thought too, actually, lol.
Thank you, Chris. Wonderful to see the bittersweet joy of this day firsthand
I was waiting for this video. As a Mongolian it's a pleasure to see things from Chris's prospective. Thank you.
Legend among men.
