Tea Sandwiches and British Afternoon Tea Etiquette

- Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner.
This tea is usually enjoyed with different types of tea sandwiches, scones with jam and butter and as conclusion - small cakes.
Strong black tea is served with some sugar and milk.

I like the idea of mixing mustard with the butter to enhance the flavour.
I am English. Lovely sandwich fillings. In the UK we spread the bread slices with butter before adding the toppings. Tea should be made with boiling water, not boiled water as it needs to be boiling to properly infuse the tea. Most times we would use tea bags these days, unless you’re at a high end establishment where you may be offered loose tea as you have served. At home we would use tea bags, maybe Earl Grey as well as black tea. We NEVER use warm milk in tea, by the way. Scones would traditionally be served with clotted cream, which is a much thicker cream than double cream, or what you would know as whipped heavy cream. There is a great debate between Devon and Cornwall as to which gets spread first, the jam or the cream. Either way is delicious. Thank you for sharing your ideas, very elegant.
Lovely either way...thanks for the information.
@Lara Gravenor Lara....I lived in Umthata,Transkei....attended a few lovely "Teas'' given by Lovely Xhosa ladies....learned to make scones as well.... Love Tea parties to this day
Lyn I can heard the love of this tea prep ...
Thanks Lyn. I appreciate your input.
TY for sharing. This may be afternoon tea in some country but it is certainly not England. Formal afternoon tea is a much more elaborate affair. Please put fresh boiling water into your tea and warm the pot beforehand. We never use warm milk in tea my dear. Keep going with your research for future videos though you have a pleasant voice. Regards Kate
It was the Industrial Revolution, and the man of the house working late, that necessitated late family dinners and therefore inspired afternoon tea.
Thank you for chopping the salmon, it's the first time I see it done that way, and it makes such a difference. I do the same and I do season it. All those sandwiches look delicious
Thank you so much! I actually have tried them this evening for our dinner and I must say, they were fab! Thank you for sharing the recipe with us! Love from Venice🥰
That is awesome 👌 I am glad you enjoyed it! 😊Hugs and take care 🙏❤
That platter with the lemons and the milk jug with the lemons look fantastic!!!!
Thank you.😊
@@NastassjaCanCook I too, love that lemon platter. Can you tell me where you got it, please?
I’m English. I didn’t know there was an afternoon tea etiquette, but then I never have afternoon tea.
Very nice video, I love your teapot so pretty; your whole table setting is beautiful.. In England we use cress in our egg sandwiches usually (not watercress) and don't use onions or chives, and we butter our breads. I haven't seen the smoked salmon minced like that either but it will taste just as nice. Yummy.
Thank you. Just a little improvisation. 😉
I loved this video! The tea sandwiches look delicious and the display is so bright and pretty. Hope you had a great tea party!
Thank you so much. Yes, everyone liked❤😊
@@NastassjaCanCook Your little cakes are so sweet and it was a lovely touch adding roses to the plate.
Beautifully done - thank you!
I love this! I remember my trips in UK
Lovely!
Thank you for this lovely video! 💖
Nice touch with the fresh rose!
Other instructional afternoon tea videos say don't puck up the saucer when seated at the table. You only do that if you're going to stand and walk around. On another note, I lived how you wrapped the mix sandwiches with a strand of chives-- like a present. So cute! The decorations, especially the roses, make the food look even more appetizing! So nice.
Such a beautiful and elegant spread. Tea has become my favourite drink and event. I love the teapots and pretty teacups. Thank you for this 🫖☕🥪🍰
Thank you🌹
Beautiful!!
And looks human like delicious.
Nice! So many people that do how-to videos make them so long and boring, but you move right along and just talk about the essentials.
Thank you 😊
Love this video! Thank you 🙏🏽 😊
🌹
Very informative...thank you for sharing 🤗💕
Beautiful sandwiches, Love your presentation an history behind them. Excellent video!
Thank you ❤😍

I'm crying to village square and other places..because they don't have enough for me..
I'm looking forward to making these soon. Just discovered your channel. Excellent production and presentation.
Thank you 😊
Excellent content and informative! New subscriber. ❤️
The quickest way to peel the shell of the boiled eggs is to rinse under cold water in same pot straight from the stove. No need for ice or anything. Let it sit in the pot of cold water for at least 10-15secs before peeling. Comes off easy peasy.
Great video
Thank you 😊
loved it big thumbs up your new friend here 😊
Thank you so much 👋
'' F A N T A S T I C '' JOB …….. Thank you Excellent video ….
Thank you so much ❤
I `ve seen many videos on this theme, - yours is the best! Thank you!
Thank you so much ❤
Thank You... learned a lot from you... I subbed...
Thank you.😊
Never never never warm milk with tea! Yuk! Loved the sandwiches though!
The servant only get the trimming pieces .....🙄....hmm....
Almost there just missing a tea plate to put your selection onto..
The fastidious amongst the elite would require a cloth napkin and better selction of cakes...
Ps .. scones dont get butter its jam and whipped cream...
Surely you mean CLOTTED cream?! Lol
@@fennecfox8623 lol ideally yes
Nice whipped double would be most agreable too
Hi Nastassja, if you could do a video for a small batch of jam, it would be great.... Thank you in advance 🤗🤗
Yes, that's a great idea!👍❤
I also enjoyed reading the comments....I got really tickled as I was taught to use room /warmed milk as not cool the tea too much....by the way ...These where lovely Xhosa ladies in Umtata during my stay in the Transkei in 1979 The Hostess served Quiche puffed pastries...
Thank you so much for this lovely video by any chance do you have a link to that beautiful lemon teir?
Thank you. I will find it for you🌹
Making a cooking video for something as simple as sandwiches is not easy! I must congratulate you... This is a lovely, lovely video👌👌and.. a beautiful presentation 😍😍 and.. your sandwiches look so delicious 😋😋 I actually felt like I just had my afternoon tea with you.🤗🤗
Thank you so much for appreciating the effort.Yes, it was quite challenging. I am so glad you enjoyed it❤🌹😍
The fact that you didn't rinse the eggs after peeling and mashed some stray eggshell fragments into the egg salad mix has given me a permanent eyelid twitch. Otherwise fantastic, keep rockin.
It all looks very nice, but traditionally scones are round, not triangular. And we never use the milk warmed.
Thank you.😊Yes, I made a separate video about homemade scones, jam with clotted cream.
Just discovered your channel beautiful presentation do you have the recipe of these scones
Thank you for discovering my channel ❤️ I do have a recipe for scones, but not the ones used in the video. Those were store bought.
If i dont have watercress, does spinach work? I'm also making curry chicken salad, can you imagine all the raised eyebrows I will get. LOL 🤣 also I heard frozen bread helps with cutting Sandwiches?
Hello 👋 Yes, baby spinach or micro greens will work. I am not sure about frozen bread, but good bread knife should do. Thank you for your comment 🌹
Does each person have a strainer or is their just one on the table? Thanks.
You can just use one to pour tea for every person.
@@NastassjaCanCook 💕👍🏼
A very expensive recipe ((( and the Russian mayo..? haha
Mayo is a mayo. Prepared the same way.😏
@@NastassjaCanCook Oops, nope. As a Russian you are to know its quality😉
Why put salt in the water when boiling eggs? :-D Dosen't make any sense.....??
So they don't crack. Salt hardens the shell.
Salt also brings the temperature of your water up when boiling.
very nice and good recipe i love it wish u visit me too
Did she say she adds boiled tongue to the chicken sandwich?? Did I really hear that?
Don't help with jello...
Always milk first when having tea this way
No this is not necessary. It was milk first in the old days for lower class since they drank out of clay cups. Hey didn’t want to add in the hot liquid first so they put the milk in to cool it down to not shatter the mugs. Upper class always had fine China so they put tea in first. Me personally, I like to add tea first to dissolve the sugar and add milk to my liking.
Someone keeps playing with my grocery's and they keep stealing my money because they gave me a bad time they think i stole their mom they are trying to be fascinated..so i cant cook today they've been stealing and take over my life for a long time can I get some help.
Village square has no love..for me or any where dose..
The egg salad sandwich is much healthier and better tasting without the extra mayonaisse on the bread. The extra mayonaisse is a turn off for me because you've got enough mayonaisse in the
egg salad.
Boiled chicken? 🤢
Cooked.
All that butter on the bread of the chicken salad sandwich is not healthy. I would eat that chicken salad sandwich without the butter. I think it would taste much better too!
this party has cakes and scones with heavy cream so she never said it was supposed to be healthy lol
Everybody has cakes and scones at a tea party but you can still cut down on all that fat and the sandwiches will taste better without all that butter.
To each their own. A little extra butter isn't the end of the world. Great news is you can omit it when you make your own 😊
