Mention Arizona State’s 1976 team and the most passionate Sun Devil fans (of which I was one) will go numb. ASU started the season ranked no. 2 nationally, with everyone - including John Jefferson - back from the only undefeated team the previous season. And with lots of network TV build up, they were off and rolling on becoming the nation’s newest college football power. Well, nope. This _loaded_ ASU team lost their first four games, including a 28-10 dud at home against UCLA in the season opener on ABC, leaving Keith Jackson without a woah Nellie. They could go only up, and rebounded to go to their home standing Fiesta Bowl. But it was a whimper of an ending to what had been billed as grand debut on the big stage.
I was a huge ASU fan in the 70s and 80s and that Labor Day loss 48 years ago was a huge flop. Terry Donahughs first game as UCLA coach with Wendel Tyler and Theotis Brown running all over them. Lost to California, Cincinnati right after that. I still think the most deflating ASU loss was the 82 Arizona game. A win would have put the Devils in the Rose Bowl but got destroyed by the Wildcats in a game not nearly as close as the final score. It was a depressing Monday at Shadow Mountain HS for us Sun Devil fans.
There was no national championship game in 1982. Penn State played Georgia in Sugar Bowl and Nebraska went to the Orange Bowl as Big Eight champ. Penn State jumped SMU for the national despite PSU losing to an 8-4 Alabama 42-21. SMU tied a top twenty Arkansas 17-17.
Foge Fagio was the coach at Pitt in 1982. Sherrill had left for Texas AM.
And one of his assistants was Bob Davie.

@michaelmartz8426 it autocorrected.
I love that you dig into actual college football history…not just the last 15 years!
Thanks for watching, please share. Trying to go over as much college football history as possible

Love this channel, Great content.
Thanks, I'll have more content coming all season
I think that Auburn also had busted seasons in 1984 and 1990. Some people had them preseason #1 in both of those seasons.
The Flutie Hail Mary is my 1st sports memory. (I’m 46)

Well Arkansas State finished 11-0 in 1975 but I digress. Lol.

The only reason Paul Hornung won the Heisman is because he played for Notre Dame. Apparently the fact that they were terrible that year didn't matter.
I miss Quinton Flowers
2005 Tennessee was preseason #3 and didn't make a bowl game
Also 2012 usc was preseason #1 and struggled badly
How do you get to Memphis? Get to the Alabama one and go left.
Basically: teams that didn’t live up to expectations
Florida State this year must've set the record for bustedness.
