Detroit Big Time Wrestling (1975)

- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- Hosted by Lord Athol Layton with matches including
Gene Debois vs Waldo Von Erich
The Patroit vs Jay York
The Sheik vs Tiger Jeet Singh (US Title Steel Cage Match)
Ron Doner vs Stan Stasiak
Angelo & Lanny Poffo (with Saul Weingeroff) vs Mikey Doyle & Billy Red Lyons (Tag Title Match)
As a kid, I got Lord Athol Layton's autograph in the parking garage at Cobo Arena in about '69 or '70....
I was from Michigan and I grew up with this on Saturdays
People like me only read about this action and gawked at the pics every week in Wisconsin. Larger than life
My condolences.
We wrestling fans in Saginaw never got to enjoy Detroit Big Time Wrestling. I believe that if Ed Farhat ($heik) could have worked something out with mid Michigan promoter, Dale Miller, he would've collected nicely back in the 70's.
so did the person that posted this i do believe
Lucky enough to get Johnny Valentine's autograph at Combo Hall. It was in parking lot before the card. He wrestled the Original Sheik. Also saw Pomparo Firpo, Bobo Brazil, Sailor Art Thomas.
All unforgettable to a 10yr old.

My apologies I didn't catch that. Thanks so much for showing the correct spelling. It may have gone unnoticed for all eternity.
The great Stan the man with his famous heart punch..one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step in the ring...
KNOWN AT THIS TIME NOT FOR THE HEART PUNCH BUT AS THE CRUSHER.
Wow, Jay York the Alaskan. This footage was from shortly after Jay returned to wrestling after taking a few years off to be a percussionist with the rock band Delaney and Bonnie & Friends. When the band broke up, York returned to wrestling.
now THAT is a FUN FACT. sounds like a fantasy life to me
Thanks for sharing this classic footage
I'm
Sixty in August Raised in Toronto Lord Athols Dignified Voice Hooked me watching on Chanel 11 Every Saturday.
First time I get to seeTiger Ali’s dad in action and it’s a CAGE MATCH vs. The Shiek!! SWEET
This is what pro wrestling always was and always should be. I just cannot stomach the stuff that goes on today. It simply does not rate with those great shows of the past. Thank you for sharing this great video.
Sthu, corny oldhead
Great card.
The Poffos, The Sheik and Stan Stasiak on the same show? Wow.
🍻🍻
I thought all of NWA Detroit was taped in Detroit and I didn't know Lanny worked there. Great find!
Originally they taped in Windsor, Ontario on channel 9, but after being voted most disliked TV show by the Detroit Free Press they moved over to channel 20 in Wixom, Michigan.
@@MrWhiteboyrick did the Windsor TV go all the way into Detroit? I don't know the lay of the land there but seems like a far reach.
@@Kayfabe74 Yes, the TV station was located on the Detroit River. The city of Detroit is actually south of Windsor, Canada. The station Channel 9 was owned by RKO at the time, until the government forced a sale to a Canadian owner. , It was broadcast at 10 pm on Wednesday and then rebroadcast on Saturday. When the show came in dead last in a Detroit Free Press poll of all the shows shown in Detroit it was canceled and moved to an UHF station Channel 20 in Wixom, MI. They taped two shows on the Sunday after the Saturday show at Cobo Arena.
@@Kayfabe74 Channel 9 the Windsor station was right on the Detroit River. One time Mark Lewin's (A Baby Face In Detroit ) brother (another wrestler )had his arm broken when they taped outdoors when he was showing his watercolor paintings of historic wrestlers. This set up a match with I think either Killer Karl Kox or The Sheik. Detroit is actually south of Windsor, Ontario and since the station at the time was owned by RKO, probably more Detroit's watched the station as they had great kids shows after school, Hockey Night In Canada and afternoon movies six days a week. The first showing was at 10 PM Wednesday with repeats on Saturday afternoon.
@@MrWhiteboyrick thank you for the information, the first time I saw anything about the Detroit territory was when I rented "I like to hurt people" in the 80's and have been fascinated with it ever since. I take it Detroit's loop covered Michigan, the part of Canada it bordered and Cincinnati right?
I miss days when every wrestler was over the age of 45
That’s because wrestlers weren’t all screwed up from dangerous angles and bumps while simultaneously encouraged to take pain pills and steroids.
@@wilhelmheinrich7502 or ran companies & pushed themselves
Lanny Poffo is very young here. But the rest of em….
thats a VERY young Lanny Poffo.
Lanny Poffo: born in Calgary while Stu Hart trained and broke-in Angelo Poffo. Also born in Calgary around the same time was Tully Blanchard while Stu trained and broke-in Joe Blanchard.
I.... did not know that..
I think Stu was breaking in Poffo's and Blanchard's wives. I heard Tully and Lanny were recently discovered to be half-brothers. 😬😲
How unique! A national anthem (in this case Oh Canada) aired on a televised "sporting" event.
When I was a kid the national anthem was the ONLY music you would hear on wrestling. The Freebirds were the first ones I saw with music, then Austin Idol, and then everybody.
It's only right since Windsor Ontario and surrounds were parts of the Greater Detroit metro area. Detroit TV and radio covered that part of Ontario just like Windsor's "The Big 8" CKLW served the Detroit area back in the day and was a major popular station in Detroit.
In all my years of watching wrestling, I can't remember once when a commentator actually got involved the way the gentleman did at the end. That said, I've watched a lot of "old school" wrestling from the 1970s and this was the most exciting program that I've seen from that decade; one would think that it might have come from the '80s during the height of pro-wrestling's rock & wrestling era, it's that energetic and exciting.
Lord Layton used to get involved and judo chop people a lot. The Sheik was pretty much the first promoter to have his own TV truck. They were showing stuff from arenas years before most people. They also rented the truck to people who wanted stuff shot on location, concert's Highschool sports and they would film and produce commercials for people
Amazing see real wrestling moves rather than acrobatics of today.
U mean more like the ballet
Geez did Stan Stasiak ever look young? He's 38 here. Always Looked in his mid 50's
Only when he was born....the very next day he was 48 and weighed 270 and some odd pounds and was known for the heart punch
No....when he was born he was actually 39 yrs old
There are a bunch of wrestlers like this, arn Anderson, Greg valentine and John tenta spring to mind.
The Sheik was born 60.
Heavy drinking and chain smoker.
Geez, even at age 21, Lanny Poffo was trying out, The Genius outfit.
@Martin luther Kennedy III I thought, that the one of the right was Lanny. It looked like him without the beard.
@Martin luther Kennedy III with the blonde hair, it doesn't look like the Lanny at all, that we would see in the WWF/WWE.
@@marcs3145 That nice way to put it was that Lanny was still "learning the trade" at that point. He was very raw and his father cleaned up after him the entire match. Fun to watch nonetheless.
My first look at Jay York, The Alaskan. Very nice match, and his flying clothesline finisher would have been unusual for the time.
I agree with you Dave. Great match really between the two. I would have liked to see this match go even longer, or a re-match between the two. Both talented wrestlers, using holds well. I enjoyed it. I would have liked to have wrestled the Alaskan myself.
Loved the couple of times too that the Alaskan pulled the Patriot in tight and put the fist to him where REF couldn't see, then returned back to classic use of wrestling holds to weaken the man. Great leg worked holds too. Working the hold and the camera catches the visual reaction on the punished opponent's face as he refuses to concede the match.
It was almost identical to the Masked Superstar’s clothesline.
Jean Dubois aka Dave McKigney, and Waldo Von Eric aka Wally Streiber, were best friends. They knew each other as teens , and remained good friends for years. They were often matched against each other.
i remember in the 60s the sheik threw fire on tv!!!!!!!! he was nuts lol-great!!!!
Great
Yeah....and now he using the fire to light his crissak.
This '75 footage looks A LOT better than all of Memphis's '80s & '90s TV footage.
Great 😃👍 Memories from my Childhood.
Hello! is there any footage of Gino Hernandez as US champion in Detroit?
Did Lord Layton leave Detroit TV to work in Hamilton and Toronto exclusively at some point (late 60s or early 70s)?
I.always loved Nazi heel Waldo Von Erich...a legendary bad guy....and The colorful Tiger Jeet Singh...this was a great card and the crazy Shiek at his bad best!
You could see a lot of the Macho man in Angelo and Lanny✝
Ref "Did you hit DuBois with a thumb to the throat?" Von Erich "Yes I did you jealous?"
Jay York did a nice job in there, I liked his wrestling work! Wish I could get in there and bounce off them ropes and lay in some stiff forearm smashes back in the 1970's.
I heard Layton mention London Arena, so I presume London, Ontario.
London arena or london gardens?
Poor lord athol had to go to london ontario
@@Steveunnie2798 Clearly said London Arena, and the old arena was still open until the mid 70's.
@@chrisdunn2614 yes, i heard him too! Thanks! I saw kiss and roxy music there. I also saw the sheik vs the mighty igor at london gardens
Yes
Lord Layton reminds me of Lord William Regal a little bit man.
I agree!
No, he's more Lord Al Hayes.
Lovin the commentary.
22:42 That is such a great camera shot.
Never realized what an out of shape old man the Sheik was back then.
Sheik might not have looked in shape or like toned athlete, but he was tough.
Sheik would have been 49 years old and in the business for 30 years at this point. Even if you put the age aside, your right, he didn't look the part of a monster heel anymore. When you think about it, there weren't that many guys his age still working on top like Sheik. Certainly it was his promotion and unfortunately, in my humble opinion, his staying on top didn't help the promotion by this point at all.
@@alvinhorhn6524 The Sheik looked 60 in his 40s. He was never in shape, but was an incredible personality.
Is that the W.W.W.F. belt Stasiak is sporting?
Can we get some worse lighting please???????...............Thank you!
Interesting that the Detroit territory had the same rules as wwwf for the cage. We’re they the only other ones to have those rules? Still doesn’t make sense.
the alskan lol- it sounds like he really didnt care about what name he had lol
I would like to see someone throw fire in the face of an opponent in the UFC today 😂🤣
I would like to see Joe Rogan just change the result of a fight, because he didn't like how the fight end.
seriously, the first 4 highlights in the opening credits was shiek throwing fire at somebody. that doesn't seem like the best idea-- it gets over only 1 person and also takes the edge off the fire ball spot.
but i'll watch tiger jeet singh any day
Wow. I didn't know that Angel was the original "Genius".
Nice haircut Lanny
Stan Stasiak is listed as North American Champion from late July to late August 1974. So I figure this show is from 1974 instead of 1975
Xontar02 that is possible! It was marked 1975 so that’s just what I listed. It is possible it was aired in 1975... some promotions were notorious for gaps in tape/air dates.
Well, I later looked up the Poffos tag title run, and they apparently won the belts in January 1975 so who knows?
funny how that title looks alot like the wwwf title Stasiak won from Pedro Morales
Was this only broadcasted in Ontario?
Nice
Is anyone else not getting sound with these videos?
Make sure there's not an X on the speaker icon.
Stasiak actually pinned his opponent by placing all of his weight on opponents shoulders. Imagine that.
No surprise seeing The Sheik easily defeating that dirty Indian Indira Singh. And Stan the Man looked good with his Heart Punch against some Canadianbum.
Wasn't the Heart Punch banned or outlawed eventually? Seems I remember hearing about it but can't find anything during a search for it.
Yes
I think that was more a case of some territories banning it(basically as a gimmick since he can use it to cheat to get a win)
From what I read that a man died from it....... Ox Baker made it famous..... Then the Undertaker used it when he was know as Mean Mark Callous
Crush was the last person I ever saw use it back in '97/ '98.
@@XantroyX your right
This show is better than AEW Dynamite
Main event was really good. Poffos were really good.
sheik won cleanly?.. i didn't watch whole match....
Is that Lord Alfred Hayes?
Lord Athol Layton. Different ex Brit wrestler.
@@misterslats Lord Layton was born in Australia.
@@colinduff2922 noted.
I miss Gentleman Saul.
Lanny always was a natural heel
I loved his scroll gimmick where he would toss fancy little scrolls to the crowd. They were printed with an insulting poem.
Weres the mighty Hercules lol🎉
So Angelo was the Genius before Lanny was? I didn’t know Lanny went this far back….meanwhile Randy was trying to make mlb
The Poffo's got screwed. SInce when is an announcer a referee?
Receding hairline? Jay York had no hairline. 😅😂
The commentators hairpiece, ooof
whos that ring announcer in blazer? not lord layton
Bob Finnegan.
@@vinnysamways63 thx now i remember

If a wrestler was thrown out of the ring in the nwa or wwf, there would be no dq,the aggressor would always win
Is this taped in Brantford?
Kevin Nagle LONDON ONT.
Description says doner
Ring anouncer says stoner
😳😎😉
Lanny Poffo was a horrible wrestler....nothing like his brother Randy...he looks so sissified and his movement is pathetic....a undercard zero!
This has to be the worst wrestling program I have ever seen.
Back in the 70s it was the best you were going to get
So hilarious, dim lights only showing the first 3 rows of seats. Like a ly’n briben rally…
A wrestler from North Bay Ontario. I never heard of him.
