    Went to my first LIV event Sat at the team championship at Doral. I have to say the way they welcome and include kids is amazing. We only had grounds passes and they invited my two young children on the tee box as DJ and Phil tee'd off. All the free activities in the kids interactive zone was amazing. My kids want to go to all of the matches we can. They filled a spot missing in the PGA tour.

    I have watched every LIV event since its inception and really enjoy it. I attended The Greenbrier for all 3 days and followed Bryson the entire 54 holes. It was as much fun as I've had attending a professional event. There were way more people there than I expected to be honest. I have attended plenty of PGA Tour events as well and of course enjoyed them as well. I love the LIV schedule day to day. You show up an hour or so early, they tee off and 4.5 or so hours later its done. So easy to schedule your day. Arrival, golf, dinner after etc. If people hate it so be it...

    Something doesn't sit right with playing golf with Horvat, Poulter etc... then coming to talk about them with ol'Guy here on your podcast. My take is that if you have something to say, say it to Horvats, Poulters face, give them opportunity to respond to you, then close that round/conversation. If you keep this "gossip guy" format, it might undermine your ability to attract new players on your videos later.

    The Liv - Guy thing is wild. Like, why are Liv folks so sensitive? They beat up the legacy golf without a 2nd thought of hurting anyone's feelings. In my experience, it's because they've been found out. If it was a good product, you would have all the teams sold, ESPN would be broadcasting it, and every corner of golf would be excited about it. Instead....we have this.

    as an Aussie it's easy for me to select my team. I wish it was countries vs each other, USA could easily be split into West Coast, East Coast, Central, North and South, add in a feeder league for rookies to relegate the bottom players at end of the season so not only is the top exciting but also the hunt to avoid relegation, ensure each team has at least 2 rookies per season or something to that effect. I think that would be the winning formula! really got into Ryder cup this year for the first time imagine that passion and atmosphere

    • @dyn4mic87
      @dyn4mic87 10 місяців тому +1

      @jackiejay4556 example in tennis would be the Hopman Cup which is country based, mens singles, womens singles and mixed doubles to compete for points, it's a well covered and watched event. It works well because other countries are represented, the Ryder Cup is not diverse enough as USA and Europe only, leaving out quite a lot of potential for other countries to be involved.

    One of the things with LIV that has been an eye opening for me is the few names that are on the rise and you use not to hear about them on the PGA tour, Lahiri, Munoz, Gooch, Ortiz, etc.. these players are suddenly on the spotlight and I really like them, if they would come back to the PGA tour they would be more followed than before just because of the exposure.

I got to know the entire field throughout the season and was fun to see guys like Scott Vincent and Richard Bland fight to save their spots at the end of the year. Your takeaway issue is EXACTLY what I figured out in my swing about 9 months ago. When it happened it was an "aha" moment! I would intentionally keep my face closed on the takeaway and then hook the hell out of the ball. When I started just naturally allowing my face to travel correctly, my contact became much better and face was more square! Awesome job to both Robbo and Rick for listening and taking his advice!

    Rick and Guy, you don't get it. PGA is dying. They were hurting before, but now they're irrelevant. Seriously, when has anyone watched PGA? They don't show the first two days or mornings. They only show a few players. And if they don't have the top players, they lose money from broadcasters. That's why OWGR can't give LIV world ranking points. It would destroy PGA financially.

    LIV is a faster pace to watch and I personally enjoy the hit after hit after hit - more action, easier to watch. Could it be better? Absolutely. But doing pretty good for a 2nd year tour.
    Also, I agree with Rick on the teams are not captivating folks...pair them with a nationality or city or continent or SOMETHING for people to identify with. In America, folks are VERY on their teams from their towns...Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Lakers, etc.
    Keep up the podcast, enjoyable listen/watch.

      @@whenisasnakeatail4933most do with an open mind... Doesn't matter your politics if you go to an actual event it blows the PGA events out of the water. More to do as a family with kids, the golfers are very engaging with fans, if you're the party type they have the DJ and live concerts, they have so many activities, and the set up all the way around is very professional... I like PGA and been to some of those events as well and tbh LIV was way better. I'll still go to PGA events as well because I like to watch in person but more to do at LIV events and fans are treated way better.

Having said that, I love the content Bryson has been putting out there with his 9 holes 2 v 2's. Everything needs history and LIV hasn't anything. It's a shame that the PGA gaffers didn't let PIF join in, in the first place. And I do blame the PGA tour for this.

    Just throwing my 2cents in: I feel watching PGA events (other than majors) do you really watch the middle of the pack guys because usually its a pre picked group and thats all you get. Liv does offer an alternative that gives you the full course experience and you get to see some of the 'others'.
    You find it hard to choose a team because they are new and youve only just started watching! Its like saying youve just started watching ice hockey and dont really get it and not sure which team to follow. Most of us with football have a team because of family, or following a player we like, or as kids even colours you like! But if you think about it people love the Ryder cup. Liv golf hit a grand slam introducing the team aspect. In fact I am shocked the PGA never thought of this. Liv proved team golf works with the finish they had. Bryson and Bubba's teams put on one helluva show. You damn right Liv Golf is working. They just need their own majors, a few more teams and events. The best part of Liv is the schedule it doesn't eat up the entire day. Shotgun starts are great

They should create a channel where you could just have that. Or maybe be more like the DP World Tour announcers. They don’t talk nearly as much as on the PGA. I get Guy’s points about LIV but I think he’s just caught up on how it’s still new. There is only so much they can do to make it better and better. Time and history of its own tournaments is what will ingrain it into a league full of enriched history. They can’t speed that up no matter how much money they put into it. Think about it this way…the next LIV tournament’s press conference will not be exciting because there is no history of champions for that specific tournament. There is nothing to get excited about for who will win because you don’t have past champions win’s to compare to. Where as for the PGA tournaments it’s plentiful and there are soo many people who can recall historic moments and wins that now the current players must live up to. What will it take to win it this time. Theres no way to figure it with LIV as everything is the first. But 10 years from now that context will be there and it will give meaning. That’s the answer, time. I do think if you understand that and give it a chance LIV is an entertaining product. Even just the free app is really cool. I can go on there and watch any of it live plus all of the additional content and supplemental content for each tournament week. Stats and leaderboards are super accessible and organized. Other fun features. The team names and relevancy are kinda ehhh but like I said in 10 years they will be seeded in their own history of context whether that is greatness or not.

      You think LIV will be around in 10 years hahaha? The Saudis only started LIV because they wanted to force the PGA's hand and get a stake in the PGA. They have done that now so LIV is no longer needed to them. Ratings are bad (more poeple watch the WNBA than LIV lol) and dropping more and more. They are no longer throwing massive money at PGA players (they got no one good in 2023) and its clear the Saudis are over LIV. Bryson had a match with his team (he and CHIII vs Anirban and Paul Casey) which was cool because you see their personalities. Just because of that I wanted them to win. This makes it very easy to support Stingers and make Stinger supporters much more invested in the team's success.

    As far as teams in LIV go, they've tried to do some of that pull (as you said) by grouping players together.. if you're from the UK, you'll probably gravitate to Majestics or Cleeks, Aussie then the Rippers, Spanish? Fireballs.. not sure why you don't feel that pull exactly, other than the name not being "Team UK"... I have generally liked the Crushers (have had a Crushers Hat that I wear for over a year now).. and I picked them because I like Bryson.. He's the captain of that team, and so I wanted to cheer for Bryson over Brooks or DJ etc... am I really "Invested" a ton? no, but if I'm watching golf cheering for Bryson or whoever, the team is a one add-on point of interest for me, not a drive... and in the end, now I maybe like Anirban Lahiri or Charles Howell more than i would've othewise.. the individual golf is still the draw, and teams is fun. The team golf for me is great, I like having it in there, but it's never going to be the main drive of things like you would have in a TEAM SPORT, golf is still an individual sport with a team aspect on the side.

    Maybe Guy is trying to be provocative to get more comments (I guess it’s working…), but the team concept really isn’t too complicated. Just pick a team and root for them. I like the Crushers because I think Bryson is the most exciting and interesting person in golf right now. Pretty simple iyam.

    LIV golf may not be for everyone but let's be honest it's still more interesting to watch than your average PGA or DP event where the field can be completely random. The best part of LIV is that it is a consistent line up of good players, the PGA have basically admitted that LIV was a good idea as they have tried to copy it with their designated events. LIV going global is also more interesting than 95% of the top tournaments taking part in the US. Guy, when you say you don't care about what's going on in LIV, that's fine, but do you really care about whats going on in the other tours as well? Lets be honest, the majors and the ryder cup are the only important things going on in golf and the rest of it is just there to fill the gaps!

    From a relatively new golf fan
    When I first started really getting into golf, it was more golf instruction videos like you, I want Peter and Danny and then I volunteered at Hero World challenge and walked with Rory, Colin, Scottie and JT and really became one.
    Problem was anytime I wanted to watch highlights of the PGA events where like Rory, Jon Rahm and others were playing. It was always putting highlights and they were three minutes long. It was very frustrating as a golf fan.
    When liv started to pop up what I enjoyed was that the highlights for each event were 15 to 18 minutes long so you were seeing full shots and it was pretty spread among the field. Luckily thanks to that competition. I think the PGA started improving the quality of their highlight videos and I got to see more of the tournament which was great so I’m happy for any form of competition. I am not a fan of what can be a monopoly. Also don’t mind the format too much, reminds me a bit of F1 so a little more fast paced, but do like a PGA event on a more relaxed day if that makes sense.
    Sidenote: crushers because of Bryson and my country had pirates haha

  • @tszampruch
    @tszampruch 10 місяців тому

    I don't love or hate LIV, but do think they could make some changes to improve the product. First, they could put it back on UA-cam. I understand the importance of television sponsors, but UA-cam made it so accessible. Second, I think they need to lean in to the team element more. They could have the first round where the teams play in foursomes together. They could help on reads, talk through shots, etc. Also, I think it would be great if the teams had "home courses" just like other sports have home stadiums. When a team plays at their own stadium, day 1, the "home" team could play from the first hole. Additionally, only merch from that team is sold there. These matches would be stroke play. Any courses that LIV needs to add to fill a season could be specialty matches like Match Play, added points for longest drive / closest to the pin.

    I think it funny that you get bored watching LIV. I have the opposite feeling now that I've watched lots of LIV. I watch PGA too but now I know why people say PGA is good to take a nap with. I literally have a hard time staying awake watching PGA and am very glad they've started doing more graphics as LIV does. I watched a big tourney a few months ago and the firs to tee off were back in the club house before the last groups had even teed off! Shotgun start is a blessing.
    No matter how you try and tie teams to some other aspect of the sport or life some people will be alienated by it. If you use club manufacturers for instance some people have issues with NIKE labor practices and potentially all players on the team would have to use all the products even if they have always played TaylorMade. Are there even 12 club mfrs with enough money to own teams? If you go by countries only 4 Americans can play? I think this generic team concept is the only way they could go and leave the biases I mentioned out of it and permit player movement within the teams each season.

    Rick,
    you asked what could another $3.5M mean to these guys. These are competitive athletes who are the best in their sport, they play with the same goal each time; to win. A team win is a team win no matter the sport or league in which it is accomplished. Think of why Team Europe winning the Ryder cup mattered to those guys. They weren't representing their countries officially, they were playing for each other and for pride.

    I went to the LIV tournament at the Centurion with my 20 year old "kids". We loved it. Great entertainment, food, drink and golf - it was really buzzing - it was the whole package - better than European and PGA Tour events I've been to, on par with an NBA game. However I still don't tune in to watch the events and I watch the PGA Tour on TV. Might be my first comment on the podcast (left a few on the main channel) but this finally pushed me to leave some critical feedback of something I observe somewhat frequently. I enjoy the show and find both Rick and Guy to be positive and entertaining but I'd put Guy in the category of someone who can easily use 10 words in what should be a 4 word sentence. The LIV rant started about 28:33 and around the 31.55 mark he even acknowledges his long-winded rant but then continues on until almost 36:25. That's nearly 8 entire minutes of what I'd estimate to be 95% Guy rambling with 5% of Rick getting in a comment or two. Would never expect this kind of podcast to be scripted but that's the extreme I think would be needed to tighten up the wandering commentary that happens more than just occasionally. No, I don't expect anything to change but I've thought about commenting on it before and this episode finally made me do it. 😁
