  • Beatles guitar lesson PLEASE: Read video description below BEFORE COMMENTING.
    Solo 0:28
    Outro 1:23
    I eliminated the second verse, the first bridge and third verse. This is a 1966 Gretsch Country Gentleman played through a Vox AD15VT set to AC30TB w/ no effects. Min Bass, Min Mid, Max Treble. .010 -.046 nickel plated wire wound strings. The amp was close-mic recorded with a DR07 digital recorder and then mixed with the backing tracks created from the original recording. Compression was added during mixing. Harrison used a Gretsch Tennessean which sounds very similar. Also, a 1991 Gibson J160-E recorded with a Tascam DR07 digital recorder 1 foot from the guitar slightly ahead of the sound hole. Strings are Masterbuilt Phosphor Bronze .012 - .052 No tabs. No profanity in comments please.
    My videos are really intended for accomplished guitarists who want to polish up their Beatles repertoire and can benefit from "seeing" how a song is played - I am not a guitar teacher and do not provide tabs. I welcome specific questions. If the various chords that I am playing are not familiar to you then I would suggest that you visit some of the many free guitar chord sites. I had to learn these songs by listening to vinyl records and watching live performances on tv.

    I'm 74 and still learning Beatles songs corrected thanks to your videos. After learning this "simple" tune realized there are 9 different chords in it. G, D7, D, Em, B7, Am, F, A and C Just such a great tune and one of my favorites. Fun to play along with.

    Thank you! I've always loved this song. Funny how Hendrix gets all the credit for the 7#9 chord. Beatles were doing it way before him. George even snuck one in near the end of the solo on Till There Was You.

    The lead guitarist wrote this riff when he was 20 years old. His name:
    George Harrison.

      Bobby Henderson According to Dave Rybaczewski, the song was written during their first US Tour between Aug 19, '64 and Sept 20, '64. The song was recorded on Sept 29, '64.

      Beatles Guitar Secrets I guess that would make sense, since they usually had a pretty short time to write songs! McCartney says he remembers getting calls from Brian Epstein saying "Boys, you have a extra week off to write for the album" lol. i couldn't imagine this. Love the Gretsch btw! I had the chance to buy one and foolishly didn't. It sold one week later when i had changed my mind, and was on my way to purchase it.

    In reply to Jakarooo96, the playing style, amp and recording process are a big part of the final sound - in addition to the actual guitars used. Thanx for your comment.

    I'm just laughing because it sounds so perfect, like the tone of both the Gibson and Gretsch are spot on! I guess they identical instruments to what they used in the recording, but like if played that song on my normal acoustic or electric it wouldn't sound like it.

      Thanx for your comment. Please read the channel description B4 commenting. First, I only cut out redundant sections - this is for accomplished guitarists who will be able to figure out the rest of the track - if you can't figure out the rest of the song then you need to improve your overall guitar chops and then revisit the site. And secondly, by cutting out sections of the song it is much easier to challenge copyright claims.

    I've already said this but to me you are the best Chanel on UA-cam! Amazing how accurate everything sounds. I know you learnt by ear and by watching live videos but I have a question... I want to also start learning songs by ear and was wondering if you have any tips since it seems like you have mastered replicating all the notes, chords and solos. How did you start your learning process? I know you are not giving lessons but would love some tips on how I could start replicating the right way!

    • @BeatlesGuitarSecrets
      @BeatlesGuitarSecrets  10 років тому +1

      Thanx for your comment. You need to study the player whose performances you are trying to replicate -- Everyone plays a bit different. Harrison plays many of his licks and solos based on certain chord voicings. By watching/listening to his playing you will get a sense of which chord voicings he favors and his picking/strumming techniques. After that, the more you know about guitar playing the easier it will be to recognize certain sounds/techniques. Isolating the lead guitar while listening helps as well - I use panning and eq to bring up the lead as much as possible. The more you listen the more discriminating your ear will become. I was fortunate enough to inherit my Mom's musical ear - she could hear a tune on the radio and sit down at the piano and play it quickly. Be prepared to dedicate lots of time if you are serious about developing your talent.

      Beatles Guitar Secrets
      Thanks for sharing this. I've been wanting to ask this myself. I can only imagine the significant amount of time you invested in the learning Beatles only.
      I'd love to know if you ever took your talent to the point of forming bands etc.
      I know I would have someway, somehow.
      I'm not much of a fan of the look-a-like Beatles bands that's out there today, but I have to admit...some are pretty incredible. I just recently watch a Philippines Beatles band and was very surprised at how good they were too.
      But everyone is different.
      Thanks again for sharing my friend.

    • @BeatlesGuitarSecrets
      @BeatlesGuitarSecrets  10 років тому +1

      boramfan87 Thanx for your comment. I was a self taught guitarist using a large chord book and listening to vinyl records. I took my playing to a higher level when I joined a band at around age 13 and for about 10 years afterwards. Sharing what you've learned with others is the a quick way to improve your skills.

    • @boramfan87
      @boramfan87 10 років тому +1

      Beatles Guitar Secrets
      Thanks for replying.
      You took your skills to a higher level at the age of thirteen!!!"
      Meaning you achieved a lot for such a young age, before you even joined a band? To me...that's incredible. But I am not the least surprised considering your complete and total knowledge of Beatle music.
      For a fun fact, this means you had to be a near expert by the age of 23yrs. I bet you were one popular guy in your private circles.
      My head swims at the possibilities of my having been that Beatles knowledgeable at the age of 23 yrs. In my world... it also means that you "lived it" closer than many of us here today could/would even dream of.
      And that's fascinating. : )
      By the way, I hope you'll pardon my many overly enthusiastic sounding comments, for I don't mean to sound so over-the-top with them, but to me this is very exciting information.
      For you've lived a musical life that I could only dream of. Here's a very respectful bow to you my friend. A bow to dedication, commitment and fanship in the highest order.
      ok...I'll shut up. lol

    Looks like your fretting the two high strings on the G chord with one finger on the acoustic guitar, never saw that done before.

    • @BeatlesGuitarSecrets
      @BeatlesGuitarSecrets  10 років тому +1

      Thanx for your comment. Not sure if you mean the chord voicing or the fingering. The chord voicing 320033 is pretty standard - a Beatles favorite. As for using one finger for the high E and B strings I do whatever feels most comfortable -- occasionally using my pinky and ring fingers. Try using one finger - you might be surprised at how comfortable it is.

    i think that opening riff is quite unconventional,i just dont hear riffs like that much.it's i guess, a simple country thing,but it is surprising to me how much George played inside chords,uh much like his mentor Chet Atkins[one of his mentors]

    • @BeatlesGuitarSecrets
      @BeatlesGuitarSecrets  10 років тому +2

      Once you realize that Harrison did play "inside chords" figuring out what he played becomes considerably easier. Of course learning his favorite or go-to chord voicings is a big help as well. Thanx for your comment.

      Beatles Guitar Secrets Spoken like a man who knows..Would you care to comment briefly on what those "favorite,or go to voicings"are,as you see it please?PS. i like how the D chord here is overlayed with that 13th funk chord[think its a 13th]on basically a country type song.Anyway,please do, if you will,enlighted us all about go to voicings of George?Enjoy you so much.Thank you.

    As usual, great stuff. During the solo, I always wonder if the open A played against the D7-5+9 was a mistake by George. I see that you did not play it. I know that I'm splitting hairs here but what is you take?

    • @BeatlesGuitarSecrets
      @BeatlesGuitarSecrets  10 років тому +4

      It's a D9 no5 X5455X and D7#9 no5 X5456X. I don't hear any open A played by Harrison at that point or anywhere else in the solo. An A (the 5th) wouldn't be an error. Lennon plays D at that point and may strike the open A string (it's part of a D chord - D, A & F#), but I can't hear it. Thanx for your comment.
