Burning Man: Huge queues as people leave festival - BBC News

- People were finally able to leave Burning Man festival in Nevada on Monday, after wet conditions eased.
Heavy rain had caused a mud bath, with rainfall near the end of last week thought to have been the heaviest since the event began more than 30 years ago.
Drone footage shows huge queues of people heading away from the festival.

As an introvert, this is one of my worst nightmares.
You'd never find me there in the first place.
Felt bad for the ones who were dragged by friends or even kids
Why?
until kumbh mela comes with 120 million people 😂
You wouldn't be at burning man to begin with lol
It always takes DAYS for everyone to leave. This happens every year. This is the first time in decades they got this amount of rain. Your "expert" doesn't know what this event is about. Go to the website, people are warned before coming what to bring.
The police shifted a few climate extremists so the BBC has decided to go after the festival. That is how BBC news works now
So true. This is a lot of speculation from someone who hasn’t done much homework.
What you lot need to do over is look at what we do over here do you think we let a bit of rain shut down Glasto no not at all
@@JackoJackson-v2p Glastonbury is vastly different. Burning man is held in the middle of the desert, hours from civilization. Burning man doesn’t even have water for attendees. Glastonbury is held in the middle of the Cotswolds…
@@damnjustassignmeoneit’s on farmland in Somerset!
Who was this “expert” lady being interviewed?? It’s a self reliant festival, people that go know what they sign up for! 🤷♂️
2:40 There is absolutely no water provided at Burning Man. Organizers instruct you to bring your own 1.5 gallons of water per day or 10.5 gallons per week.
This lady hasn’t done her homework. She could’ve at least read the Wikipedia article on burning man before showing up as an expert on it on the bbc.
@@damnjustassignmeone …or looked at the Burning Man web site.
Radical Self-Reliance:
This isn’t like any other festival, we do not expect to be looked after, we look after each other
In fact, could someone please clear this up for me : Does 'radical self-reliance' mean that people are supposed to look after & care for each other if needed, or does it mean that when the shit hits the fan, it's 'every man for himself - sayonara suckers'??
This expert has no idea what this festival is about. Attended this once and had to bring in own water, food and supplies. As did everyone else. also the only way to solve a once in a generation flooding issue would be to ship in hundreds of tons of gravel, permanently scarring the site. Id bet 95% of the people who got stranded were cool with it. And the other 5% probably shouldnt have come in the first place. Poor analysis
i love how people tried to drive out in the mud or the ones who walked 10k to sit for 2 days waiting for buses, they are the ones crying. I do want to attend this event. looks amazing.
I still find it funny purely out of irony that BURNING man got FLOODED.
You are funny
“You buy a ticket to the event, you come under the care of the organizers, and you expect to be looked after.” That’s not how all of this works lady. One of the principles of burning man is radical self reliance. And, as it turns out, people were mostly fine.
So if you are being "Radically self reliant" where do you take a shit?
🎉 INDEED!
@@PK-999read the list of things You have to bring and take back home with You! It's on their website. It details EVERYTHING!
This interview demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the situation.
This wasn't the Fire Festival. This is an entirely different type of event. One death in 5 days out of 70,000 is really not a bad outcome given the circumstances. For an event of that scope, a death on site is not uncommon and, in this case, was unrelated to the flooding.
You never been to Glastonbury? The toilets can kill!,,
This is how it looks EVERY YEAR.
usually not as much mud. i feel for the people in tents, they must have been miserable. i'm saving up to go and will rent a RV to sleep in.
You just don’t have the same environment in Britain. Just not the same thing. This is the Nevada desert.
the burning man has been extinguished.
How is this still in global news. A festival has a long cue to get out? Practically happens at every massive festival!
this festival it's always 3 to 5 days to get everyone out. some people stay to help clean up.

@@ByGraceThroughFaith4991 I think they can get another 500 days out of some people in another country having mud on their shoes. Watch.
I have read that this is the site of an ancient lake bed. Up until 15,000 years ago, there was a lake there, Lake Lahontan.
Perhaps the festival should be held somewhere with a slight elevation, to encourage water run off.
Bbc why did you turn off comments on your sarah sharif story?
let's ask the blue haired woman....
Doesn't look very GREEN.!!!!
How much was tickets
$425 for general admission and it sells out every year. YOU DO HAVE TO bring certain things that are checked before you can enter. i'm saving up to go and it'll be about $10,000. you should go to their website to see the list you have to bring.
@@bernadineshelbourne8915 what a rip off, bring everything into the desert and pay. They were lucky this time
@@TT-jg8ju this event started in 1986, this is the first rainfall they've had. all other years you had to worry about dust storms. i so want to go to this, will need about $10,000 (will bring others to cover costs) this is THE ART event in north america.
@@bernadineshelbourne8915 why 10k? Ur renting the best RV? Dust looked bad too. Why not change location?
10k is for renting good RV also a trailer for about 2 weeks. You need to bring a lot of water 1 1/2 gallons per person per day. Also, need food and whatever art project you'll be creating or displaying. And bring a couple of bikes because once you are parked you can't move your vehicle until you leave. @@TT-jg8ju
When burning man turns into drowning men 😅 hope everyone is safe!
they had 2 days of mud. the only people who had problems were the ones who tried to drive out and they got stuck. the organizers told people to stay but some didn't listen.
The signal to leave was given but stranded people were strongly advised to wait 5 hours to avoid congestion. But these stranded fools still exited immediately only to sit in 5 hours of stand-still traffic. Dumb! 😖
A freak rain that happens maybe once every 20 years. The organisers make it clear what ppl need to bring, its in the dessert with no amenities...and uk festivals have descended into mud fests before where ppl need to just make do...
"huge learnings " I guess this the updated replacement for the overworked "lessons were learned".
The person being interviewed uses 'care' 'looked after by organisers'. She is assuming that the organisers give a monkey's for the attendees - they don't. The mission statement of this festival pretty much states 'every man/woman for themselves'.
The vision is incomprehensible.
As per a message below - attendees need to bring everything they need to survive. The organisers bring nothing except a spot in the desert (and a growing bank balance).
they don't make much money from this. never been the point. and it takes 5 months to plan, need to pay those people if you want the best.
There is a HUGE list of stuff when You sign up. There is no other event like this. The site is humongous and areas are huge. The area is the size of a small city and no "organizer" in GB knows about this kinda deal. This thing is like a refugee camp, but for a festival. And you CAN NOT forecast weather in this desert. These weather conditions were unfortunate and sad, but talk about "should have" , when You cook 50 dinners as a routine and tell people how to cook 2500 all of a sudden. Not to mention when comparing Glastonbury and NY Woodstock to an empty desert with no asphalt roads etc.😢
Some were actually looking to be compensated because of the bad weather.
😂🤣😄🤣😂
Wow it must be a great festival 😀🤘hope they get home safe.
if i had $10,000 i would go in a heartbeat. it's an artists dream to attend.

Next year, you two need to go to Burning Man and see what it is about because obviously you aren't able to understand very clear instructions and description of what Burning Man is about. You cannot judge this event.

The wisest thing that should be on everyone's mind currently should be to invest in different streams of income that doesn't depend on the govt. Especially with the current economic crisis around the world. This is still a good time to invest in gold, silver, and digital currencies (BTC,ETH...)
Please, how do I go about it? am still a newbie on investment trading.
The crypto market is highly profitable with an expert broker just like Mrs Rhonda Beck. I got recommended to her, and since then, my financial life has been a success.
Since I started my investment of $1,000 with Mrs Rhonda, I am now having $29,450 in my portfolio.
I just searched about her on Google and yes, she's won my heart. She just gained herself a new client
please, how can someone get to speak with Mrs Rhonda?
Why is this woman bloviating about something she is completely unaware of? Culture, climate, geology, geography - does she have any pertinent knowledge at all? Has she visited a desert? Altered her state? Even been to America?

It is in the Nevada Dessert what on Earth would people expect... perfect weather conditions? 😂
Not floods!
The most popular dessert in Nevada is the Gateau Basque, and what people would expect to find in the Nevada Dessert is a jam or pastry cream filling. HTH
Why is it called Bernie Man?

Radical self reliance is a #1 at the burn. Burners prep for the event this expert has no idea what burning man is lol could have taken 10 minutes to read their website to know what is up
it's usually sand storms that are the problem not mud.
@bernadineshelbourne8915 hehe I know I spent a lot of years at the burn.
When it started the Extinction Rebels halted cars coming in, for about 2 miles long traffic jam. The authorities cleared them by ramming their vehicles and arresting them, etc 😂
This great venue was a disaster as flooding and mudslides and no way of communications but one group of spectators had a portable satellite connection. Now it’s the exodus.
Funny how people all flock to the desert during this infernal climate change 😂😂😂😂😂
There is no climate change
seems someone needs to organise a helicopter courier buisness to the site to beat the traffic
and see how british petroleum make money selling fuel for their carvans. business and art are same, bbc knows
oh no, look at them getting stuck in traffic.....in a dry flat open land.
So, no useful suggestions then. Thanks Helen.
How about scoping a maximum number of attendees? How about individuals having a pro-active emergency plan like extra food/water?
most people bring double what is needed because they know some don't (only a few). the only people who had problems were the ones who tried to leave before things dried up. if you look at the site now it's back to bone dry. and it always takes 3 to 5 days to get everyone out. if you go to their website they state that.
Is that because a challinger 2 can 🔥 Burn too ..... 🙈👁️🙉

I have a doctors appointment today and have to use the only highway out of the valley I live in and about half of those vehicles will be on it. I'm leaving about 2 hours early! The road goes over a mountain range and those RVs and buses go about 5 miles per hour.
Okay, but the exodus from burning man is like this every year, and it’s been happening for nearly 40 years now...
