The Elegant Eastern Hemlock

This is a beautiful, elegant tree with a magical presence! Although it doesn't exactly fit with the name of this channel, the eastern hemlock lives on as a relic conifer of the last ice age! The tree creates a cool, shady microclimate, which forms a unique ecosystem not found in warmer climates. Even though the eastern hemlock struggles to grow on windy sites, high pH soil, and heavy clay along with little tolerance of summer heat, drought or invasive insect pests, it grows extremely elegantly when given the perfect location and preventive care.

One of my favorite native species, they are native here in the D.C. area as well, we are also on the edge of their range. Sadly many have died or are dying from the adelgid, so sad. There are a few local groves which are being treated and look really beautiful! Thanks for the video!
