that is by far the most informative video I have seen on how to use a field guide. I am sharing this great video and adding it to my favorites. thank you for taking the time to educate me
Oh my! Thank you for this video. I always flipped through pages and searched online. Now, I am armed with this knowledge, I am ready to hit the woods. Thank you for this video.
He is using a Peterson Field Guide in the second part of this video. I personally have used Peterson FGs that cover several subjects (reptiles, trees, birds etc.) and they have never let me down or left me confused. Peterson guides are descriptive, having all the basic info and goes into deeper info as well. Peterson is a widely trusted and recommended book. Peterson is probably the standard across many subjects. I hope that helps. I would also suggest getting a 'pocket guide' and carry it in your pack, pocket or whatever and take it with you every time you go on a hike whether that be a day hike or just a lazy stroll around the block or take it with you on a trip to the doctor or anywhere you may find yourself waiting with time to kill and you can even look out the window a lot of times and use the pocket guide to reference any trees you see. But yeah, to answer your question simply I would say Peterson Field Guide(covering whatever area of the country you live in i.e. eastern, north east etc.)
Its humbling when you learn that you have been IDing a tree wrong for years. Not sure if that was what you meant by your comment but I've been watching tree id videos and I guess I was a little crooked because I too got set straight 😅
Also remember: build a man a fire you keep him warm for a night, set a man on fire he'll be warm the rest of his life ... Sorry, I had to. GREAT VIDEO! Great info!
+barbsluv1> How bout: Build a man a fire you keep him warm for a night, send him to hell he'll be warm for an eternity. Or: Build a man a fire for a night....like in California, there will be no trees left to identify!
Awesome vid! I’m confused on how to tell white ash from wild cherry at first glance. All the black cherry (and choke cherry) have to go since I’m getting sheep and goats...

hey! love the way you speak man, so easy to listen to! do you know of a similar book for woodlands in the UK? i live in london, some friends and i are thinking of buying some land in the south of england to manage/grow woods and we need exactly this type of knowledge!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he will spend a fortune for a fish equipment, and fish once or twice..., just saying
I was perfectly OK until you said, "Go through the maps of the trees that have opposite arrangement." Opposite what? How do you find the maps of trees that have "opposite" arrangement? Thx.
This is the single most useful video about learning trees that I've ever seen. Nice work!
One of the simplistic explained tree ID guides I have seen. thanks

Thank you for the feedback. Check out the Master Woodsman website too, will eventually be far more info there. All the best!

There are many kinds of softwood deciduous trees..
