I'm absolutely sick about it but we had to cut my Hemlock down yesterday. The previous owners planted it very close to the house and after 10 years of me fighting for some way to keep the tree, I had to give in... I am currently looking at spots to plant a few new ones so they don't damage the house. I love these trees!

The fact that these trees can live for 1200 years is incredible to me. I just picked up some tsuga canadensis essential oil because i love the smell of wood oils, but was surprised to notice it seems to have helped with my throat/breathing issues. Apparently the oils are good treatment for things like asthma and respiratory weakness.. Beautiful smell though. Black spruce is another favorite of mine and also Siberian fir

Wow!!! Amazing! We stole a small one off the side of a super curvy road on a mountain in NC. We just thought it was pretty and we are ready to transplant to our property. We do get deer so now we have to think about maybe just putting it in a bigger pot. We have woods and a large field on a hill.

Note of interest, while digging a water line in Vermont I uncovered a 100 year old hemlock water line berried and still intact. 10 foot sections’ with male female connections and bored through the centers. Very rot resistant.

In CT they released natural predators of the hemlock wooly adelgid throughout the state and it seems to have solved the issue.

Thanks Gary. Suggestion. Revisit the peach tree you pruned earlier in the year. Be nice to see how it has grown.

Super video from a real expert, who is articulate and equipped with knowledge through a horticultural career. Thank you for new info on this gorgeous tree I just bought today for my shady moist but we'll drained garden on a hill close to the Danube (just outside Vienna).

Gary what an awesome overview of this interesting tree. Just subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning more. We have a shady corner of a garden in Zone 7a on the East Coast where we're thinking of planting E. Hemlock. From late spring through mid-late fall, it's shaded by a 15 ft Japanese Maple and only gets some filtered sunlight. From mid-late fall through late spring until the maple leaves grow in, it gets a lot of direct sunlight. If we start with a 5-6 ft tall E. Hemlock, about how much will it grow every year? We're planting it in good soil, mixing in 2 in. of Bumper Crop and Espoma Organic Tree Fertilizer.

Di you think it will grow in Dallas? It gets 110F here and the summer heat here kills sensitive plants much faster than the winter cold

No way, this tree only exists in special environmental situations in which they prefer cool, shaded stands with rich, moist soil that contain a special consistency that is hard to describe. I grew up in Penn’s Woods and these trees are very special to nature. The feeling of these groves is old and wise.

Gary, I enjoyed the video. A question for you: Isn't the hemlock a host for Cedar Apple Rust same as cedars?

So I have one of these beauties that is getting too wide and it is beginning to encroach on the sidewalk. How in the heck does this get pruned and when?

Hi Gary- do you have any recommendations on propagating the Eastern Hemlocks? My dad has a few that seem to be disease resistant and I would like to grow from them to plant on property.
