The Cambridge AXR-100 is my pick for best Hifi product under $1000 USD. It can/will be/should be, the heart of your system. It can scale up and grow with you.
Hello 👋 I've had mine for 4 years and from day one the cooling fan kicks on after 10-15 minutes of powering on and boy is that fan loud.Even at low volume levels, the fan kicks on. I contacted Cambridge and was told it's normal. Betweenthat and all the cheap caps ( samxon ,deacon) ill be selling it in the near future.
@@Thetimeisnow78 Was going to say sth like you. Sound/power - really nice. But that active cooling, like WTF... Enjoy high pitched small diameter and high rpm fan noise.
I'm having issues with the volume knob. It's not working properly when I try to turn it manually, but it's fine when I use the remote. The knob itself is made of flimsy and cheap plastic, unlike the knobs on my SX-1010. Even the build quality of my early 90s Onkyo A809 blows the Cambridge out of the water
@@Thetimeisnow78 I am sorry to hear you are having an issue. Did you reach out to Cambridge for assistance? You can reach customer service in the US at (877) 357-8204. I hope you can get your issue resolved.
Total noob here watching dozens and dozens of videos trying to accomplish both streaming Airplay from phone and using my apple TV into my TV …and getting HT sound to my Sonos Arc (HDMI) but to a SEPARATE 2 channel system for music Ur the 1st video to explain how the different connections work .. which Dac is used for which connection type…. That i can use the optical out on the TV for the 2 channel/AMP system This has helped me so much Thank you !
Once you get it, let me know what you think. Tip: Let it run for about 24 hours before you give it a serious listen. I am very happy for you. It is a wonderful unit. Thx.
@ it arrived, sadly the speakers are out of stock (indiana line tesi 6) so i still have to wait up to a week for them to be delivered, but i hooked it up to some aiwa 6 ohms 3-way speakers i had around from an old "hi-fi" 2000s system and even those shine under it. i hooked it up to my pc via toslink and ...man it just pushes the speakers with an accuracy that they never dreamed off. of course it has enormous power but the thing that i find incredible is that sound stage. everything is so meticulously positioned, i just love it. you were right about everything and i tap myself on the back for trusting your ears sir! this is my first ever true hifi system and its paradise to my ears! thank you so much !!!
Man, I am so happy for you. It is an amazing unit even at twice the price. I really how it brings you as much enjoyment as it has brought me. Keep me posted. That's awesome. Thx.
You convinced me. Just bought a refurbed AXR100 that arrives tomorrow for $500 Cdn. I have a pair of Elac Debut 2.0 b6.2 and a Fluance DB10 sub. I’ll see how they sound for a couple of months and decide if new speakers are in order. Can’t wait.
@ man I've gotta tell you this amp is out of this world. my speakers have arrived, a pair of indiana line tesi 6 and the sound is holographic it feels like I am hallucinating, and the bass is sooooo deep, when the drums hit I feel them dancing on my chest. Bear in mind I am not an audiophile, this is my first hifi system but it sounds so goooood. And the levels it can reach in a 40m2 living room, it's like your own concert or dance club, it's pure power and beauty this amp. you will love it it's guaranteed!!!!
I will let others do that. I do however like a good inexpensive product if it is fun or performs better than expected. Example: the FiiO K11 DAC I just reviewed. I thought it was pretty cool. Thanks for watching and for your kind words.
Thanks Ed, for reviewing the AXR 100. I have had my AXR 85, for about two years now, and it is a really nice sounding addition to any configuration of audio modes.
@@jpbezanilla I think so. I have opened them both up and I can't see any difference. Even if there was, I am not sure I could hear the 15 watts difference anyway. If you don't need the DAC go for the AXR85. If you are stateside Cambridge has open box units on eBay for $449 with the warranty. That's how I bought my AXR100 a few years ago. Let me know what you decide. Thx.
I have had the AX R100 for six months now. Paired with an Andover Songbird HR streamer, a Martin Logan 10” sub & a set of Monolith B6 4 ohm speakers. Sounds fantastic at any volume! The fan noise that I see people refer to is not an issue for me, even when driving the amp hard. I found your review to be spot on sir. Nicely done!
You had me at silver face Ed! I like the fact that you reviewed a unit that you have listened to for three years so you know it so well. I hope your HK 3370 wasn't in listening range. LOL
Mike, I love them both but, would give the nod to the Cambridge. The HK lives in downtown Chicago with my youngest boy. All my kids have great rigs. I am trying to build a new generation of Hifi enthusiasts. My mission!!
I’m with you on the Cambridge Audio amps and receivers. They offer great value in current market, with excellent sound quality. I’m running a CXA61 powering Wharfedale Diamond 225’s, and I’m happy with this setup in my small listening room. I am now a British fan boy for stereo gear. I’m not Carl. Good overview of the AXR100. 👍🏼😎🎶👊🏽
Your will love this. I have a pair of 225s in the house for review. I will pair them with the AXR100 and I am expecting magic. Yes, my friend Carl. Mr. Magnapan. He is unrelenting with his opinions. You know me, all are welcome. I am glad you love you system. BTW, I have a CXA81 MkII on its way to me for review. I am also getting an Audiolab 6000 in as well. Should be fun.
@@OldGuyHifi I do love that. Looking forward to your thoughts on the Diamond 225 speakers paired with the AXR-100. I was running Klipsch floor standing speakers with dual 8” woofers and horn-loaded aluminum tweeter configured in a 2.5 way array. They sounded good, but I moved to a smaller space and they were a hassle to lug around. Gave them to my grandson. Decided to go bookshelf route for speakers. The bottom-firing port of the 225’s intrigued me. Herb Riechert’s glowing review inspired me to try them. The Wharfedale speakers then inspired me to try a British amp, so I got the Cambridge amp. I’m pretty sure this is my rig now. Sounds fantastic and it fit my budget constraints. Can’t wait for your upcoming review. Curious, did you buy the 225’s or did a subscriber send them for review? Enjoying your videos. I feel like I have a buddy to talk about stereos & music with via your channel. Sadly, my two best friends that I discussed music & gear with passed last year. Miss those discussions. Thanks friend. 👊🏽🎶😎
@@Norman-bone13 Norman I love our conversations. You are welcome to email if you wish rather that just talk in the comment section. The 225s are from a local subscriber who was generous enough to lend me them along with a vintage Adcom stack. Should be fun. I must admit that as a kid my Dad had K-Horns and ever since, I can't find any love for the Klipsch sound. I do love the British sound i.e., Wharfies, Andrew Jones ELAC designs. Mission. & Monitor Audio. I don't like the current B&W & KEF sound. 25 years ago I did when they used soft dome tweeters but now more. That said the Monitor Audio Silver 100s I have in use metal dome but, on the AXR100 & EVO150 they were magic. That review is shot, edited and ready to go maybe next week. Hint: I liked them a lot. Thanks so much for letting me blab on. I appreciate it.
I have a powernode 2 and was thinking about getting the AXR85, do you think the dac in the bluesound would be better than the built in dac on the AXR100? Pairing with the Kef Q150 and a sub but also worried about how the low pass filter will work. Thanks!
I am excited for you. The AXR100 is the piece that reinvigorated my interest in the hobby. Even with all the cool stuff I get to review, the AXR100 is my touchstone. It reminds me that for a modest cost you can get world class sound. Leave it running for 24 hours before you seriously give it a listen. I know your will love it. Keep me posted on your thoughts and experience with it. Thanks so much for letting me know.
@@OldGuyHifi Thanks! Mine is a refurb I bought from Cambridge on ebay with a 1yr warranty.. this was probably just a returned unit inside of an amazon 30 day return plan (or something similar). I'll let it run for 24 hours regardless before I really let'r rip. Take care!
Replacing my edifier 1280db with this CA AXR100, Elac Debut 3 DB63s speakers and RSL 10k subwoofer ahhh plus the wiim mini. Cant wait! Christmas coming early this year!!!
I Enjoy your thorough reviews especially when you remove the tops and start speaking of the internals. That and the educational replies on our comments is what sets you apart from the rest. Keep up the great work!
I always highly enjoy the opportunity to get a peek under the hood of gear. I don't even understand much of the circuitry, but somehow for me it adds to the character of the devices to see their insides. Thank you!
Thanks for such a great and thorough review. I have the AXA35 Integrated amp driving a pair of Polk Reserve R600 tower speakers in a smallish room, 13x13. But Polk recommends an amplifier with at least 100 watts per channel. So I bought a Yamaha AS701 with 100 watts compared to the AXA’s 35 per channel. I was expecting a big improvement. In a nutshell, NO! The Cambridge matches the Yamaha in the bass and I think sounds better overall. I was dumbfounded. I assume the Yamaha would do better in a larger room, but who knows? So now I’m thinking about getting the AXR 100, not only for more power, but for the DAC. I have the WiiM Mini and have to use the Wiim’s DAC because the AXA35 is all analog. Again, thanks for a great review.
Yamaha has a reputation for being thin and bright regardless of room size. The Cambridge house sound is smooth and very detailed with good bass and great imaging. As I said, I think the AXR100 is the best piece of Hifi under a grand. I stand by that. Thx for tuning in and commenting.
@@stanionman8178 I love it. It is a fantastic not only at the price but full stop. I will always own the AXR100. I listen to it as often as I can. It is warm, smooth and detailed. Very good. I you purchase one please let me know your thoughts.
Another really great review Ed. Thank you also for getting into the internals! Always cool to understand architecture, design and quality of production and you’re one of the few that take the time and effort to go there. This makes me consider getting back into a really nice integrated someday 🙏🏼👍🏼
John, Thanks for returning. FYI, I do have a Cambridge CXA-81 MkII on its way to me shortly so, that might pique your interest. I find the internals interesting and I want to do videos I would like to watch. I guess that's my niche? Thanks again.
From Tunbridge Wells Kent UK. Fantastic review, thank you for posting and sharing. I run Spendor A4's and Rega Planar 3 50th Anniversary, which replaced my 1980's Rega Planar 3. My current amplifier are my professionally rebuilt 1980's Cyrus 2 and PSX. I'm getting better results from my budget but good Yamaha A-S201. Call me old fashioned, but I want tone controls. A HiFi studio near me have demonstrated the Cambridge CXA61 and the Rega Elex Mk4 with Spendor A4's and Rega 3. It's personal I think, during the demo I had no control over my early vinyl - 1963 to date, (all mint and in plastic covers I should add). In my opinion some recordings need a little help when playing. Until I saw your review, I wasn't aware the AXR100 had tone controls, it's not obvious, so thank you for covering that. The tone controls on the A-S201 help a lot. So where do I go from here after reading lots of reviews and one demo? Coming away from your genuine review, which I really enjoyed, I'm going to get myself an AXR100D. I'll report back. Thank you again for posting.
I am glad I was able to help out. I love my AXR100. I have the CXA81 MKII in for review and lament the lack of tone controls. It does sound very good despite that. Review soon. Yes, please let me know how you like the AXR100. Thanks. BTW my family hails from Dorking. Holmwood, Dorking along the A24 just south of Dorking. Not far from you.
I think Cambridge makes good products that most can afford. If I needed something audio wise, I would consider them. Thanks for your review. I was a little disappointed that you just gave the FM "tuner" module a mention, but didn't even let us know how it sounded or how its sensitivity and selectivity was, and what antenna you used. I'm disappointed that manufacturers don't even give bonafide FM tuner section specifications, like in the '60s and '70s. These days the emphasis by manufacturers is on digital formats which, of course, outperform FM radio, but I'm old fashioned. Like you, I like the through hole construction on the amp section. Gives me a better chance at being able to repair it. Thanks for the review. Stereo amps and receivers are my interest.
My studio is is a basement so I have no way to run an antenna. I do use the internet radio feature of my Cambridge MXN10 Streamer and this wonderful. Way better than broadcast. Thanks for your view and comment.
I don't know how all the sensitivity specs and that stuff works- but I will say that FM stereo music sounds great on my AXR100 and I just use the little wire antenna that came with it. Don't listen to FM at home that much anymore, mostly in the car. I remember the good old days of LA radio in the 70s and 80s KMET and KLOS and KROQ. I also remember stereo salespeople and advertising were much more serious about what the tuner specs were back then and FM was more important to people back then.
@philsince59 Yes, tuner specs were very important back then. Thanks for sharing info on your Cambridge. And you older FM listening experiences. I'm not far from NYC and the amount of good FM stations we have can satisfy many. We even get some great Connecticut stations down here on Long Island, too My younger friends don't share much enthusiasm about FM. But I grew up with it. Happy Listening !
Great video, Ed! I really enjoyed your depth and detail on this one. Especially enjoyed the look inside, and your take on thru-hole vs SMT is spot on. Now I just need to find a place to put one!
I almost got one of these, but ended up Opting for a CXA60 instead... It was a while ago, i can't remember why. I sometime have regrets because I think I'd like to listen to fM radio. In any case, Cambridge do a good job of making solid products that look and sound more expensive than they are.
I use a Node2i and if I want radio I listen to tune-in, I can listen to over 50 am and fm local channels on top of channels all over the world Paris France, Berlin Germany or Doublin Ireland. I use the CXA81 Cambridge.
Hi, I watched your video on Sunday last week. I was after a replacement amp for my Denon PMA800NE. I had a few amps of interest, but the price range of between £500 - £750 presented a number of options, but I had the quandary of would I be wasting my money. I was unaware of this amp. But saw that Cambridge Audio were selling on eBay and they had open boxed and refurbished. I purchase the refurbished option at £319.00. I have listened to three CDs and am happy. The sound has more muscle and does not sound shrill when turned up. I still have to listen to vinyl to see what I think. but suspect I shall be happy with that too. The only issue I have is that the volume has to be turned up further, but it does go to a level I can listen too. I don't overstretch it ever. Thanks for posting your video. It certainly solved my amp purchase.
Yes the gain on the volume knob is a bit slower than most people are used to. Cambridge volume schemes are typically very linear rather than weighted. That means on other products you get more volume initially with less of a rotation. I find I am very happy at around 38-42 or so on the display. I am so glad you were able to get and are happy with it. Keep me posted on what you think of the vinyl playback. Thanks so much for watching.
@@OldGuyHifi I inadvently booked for delivery to my home address and needed it to go to a store to collect. The guy at Cambridge Audio was very responsive with emails. Unfortunately it was already out to be shipped. Thankfully DHL were able to redirect to a Store.
@@OldGuyHifi oh wow I'm running a set of old onix rocket elt bookshelves. sensitivity is 89 dB. I use the optical out on my Sony television and stream everything through my Xbox series x . I noticed to get to a volume I like to listen to especially when watching movies I have to get into the mid 20s for it to reach volume i enjoy. The fan kicks on pretty fast and I hear it especially when there's a quiet part in a song or movie I'm guessing because I have to run it so high? it's an annoying clicking sound like it literally sounds like the fan is hitting the wire in the back a few people told me I should return it that it shouldn't sound like that?
I usually skip reviews where I have no interest the products. Just saying you have a good style and offer a lot of info and interesting insights that make me watch regardless. I cap modded a Schiit Freya +, run it with some really good 9-pin tubes and find that OA StarCrimson amp drool-worthy…so just keep doing what you’re doing.
@OldGuyHifi I have 2 pairs of old KEF Q-series. Q10 (10-100W @ 6 Ohm) & Q50 (10-150W @ 6 Ohm). There has been a statement by Cambridge that running both pairs with 4-6 ohm speakers at the same time can conclude in overheating. This statement makes me hesitant to buy the AXR-100. After 35 Years my AKAI - AM-M739 fumed and needs a repair. But before I spend too much on a repair I'd rather look for a new amp. The other alternative to the AXR-100 would be a Yamaha A-S501 to drive my KEF's. I mostly need the amp to connect my Pioneer mixer to listen to vinyl records and a tape deck. I appreciate your channel and knowledgeable insights. THANK YOU !
@@OldGuyHifi It could happen. I guess if I do not play at too high volume it will be fine. Still though some amazon reviews are not so positive about the longevity of this amp. If the return/warranty rate is rather high I am still hesitant to trust this amp as much as you do.
Great review! I've got a Cambridge Audio Azur 640r that is 16 yrs old now and absolutely love it. Huge toroidal transformer - very powerful too @ 170 wpc in 2 channel 👌
Great review. I’ve loved everything about this unit but one thing. The fan noise on mine was very noticeable. Everything else was definitely bang for buck worthy as that thing is powerful.
Mine used to sit behind a glass door so if it ran, I never heard it. That said I have been using out in the open for reviews and I have never heard it. Maybe I got lucky? Thanks for returning and commenting.
I'd bet that my Keces E40 Integrated Amplifier would give the AXR100 a run for its money and its MSRP is $749.00. I have it powering a pair of $2,400. Neat Acoustics Motive SX3 Bookshelves and I prefer the E40's synergy with the SX3's over my REGA Elex MK4 Integrated. So much so that I'm selling the $1875. Rega Elex MK4.
Ed, thanks for another fantastic overview. I believe you eluded to the fact that this was no longer your daily driver. Do you mind sharing what that is these days?
Jeff, The EVO150 is now a permanent part of the family. I really liked it and it gives me a high-end benchmark product for reviews, plus the wife liked it. That is the best part. I hope all is well with you and yours. Thx.
From what I hear that Marantz unit is very good. I am reaching out to Sound United to see if they will send me some Marantz review units. 🤞 Thanks for watching.
@@OldGuyHifi It's a very decent networked integrated amp and would be great for the majority. It's just things have moved on and a non networked amp along with a dedicated streamer would probably be the better, cheaper option these days.
Daz, You make a good point. I am just suggesting this unit as a great budget upgrade to the cheap Class D stuff out there. Add a WiiM unit of the like and it is a compelling option. Also, I am basing it on sound quality rather than just features. BTW, I do own an EVO150 so I know the top of the market.
When I started the title of the video, I was getting ready to ask something but come the end and you answer my question before I even asked it. Did you read my mind? ;-) And yes the question was how the DAC compares to the MXN10. (really really wish the A/MXN10 had 1 digital input....)
Honestly, the AXR100 works well with almost any speaker. I would not pair them with a speaker that is overly warm. Like a Linton. That said it works arresting with the Diamond series. Also, Dali, SVS, and Q Acoustic.
I think you will find that they are almost sonically identical. I can't confirm it but I think they are the same amp. I am sure you will find that they both sound great. Keep me posted on your thoughts. Thx.
@@OldGuyHifi I thoroughly tested both as well as the Arcam A5. Hands down, the Cambridge was better. The AXR100 was put to B&W 606's S3's..wow! Punchy, rich warm sound with a massive soundstage! Blew socks off the Arcam which was priced at £300 more than the Cambridge! The Arcam was not accurate at all and very bright sounding, no midrange at all. Cambridge was taken home that day 👍
Just writing to let you know I got the unit with the noisy fan swapped. Great service from Cambridge Audio. I had to wait a couple of weeks to be available to collect. They delivered the replacement three days later. This unit is fine and no issues with the fan. Very happy.
I did, more or less, replace it but the replacement was $3000 USD. I have put the Cambridge EVO150 in the rack as my daily driver. That said, I will always have the AXR100. It is my god buddy. Thanks for tuning in Stuart.
I've had my axr100 for a couple of years and have really enjoyed it for the most part. I started with kef q350s and SVS 12 inch sealed sub. Much to my chagrin the aluminum drivers on the kefs ripped twice - once under warranty and then again out of warranty. I replaced them with a pair of KLH Concords. But now the axr100 keeps shutting itself off saying "overheat protection" every time I turn it up past -20 to -15 (the backwards volume level numbers drive me crazy) which is the volume level where I like to listen LOL. My phone Bluetooth is my source, and the receiver is well ventilated on a shelf in a cool room. I'm wanting to ditch the KLH and get Klipsch RP 8000f ii but I'm worried about this constant auto shutdown thing now. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. PS you taught me a lot about my own receiver LOL-also, never had any fan noise problems.
Sounds like you love to party! The Klipsch are much more efficient and should play louder with less power. I am surprised the AXR100 is shutting down. If you didn't have that issue with the KEFs, which are much less efficient, then maybe there is an issue with the KLH? Let me know what you ultimately decide. Thx.
Get yourself a computer cooling fan, I have a twin fan sitting on the top of the amp drawing warm air out of the unit, I bought it on Amazon for around £12 ! I plug the fan into the usb service port to power it !
I did get the Klipsch RP 8000f mkll- my system is everything I could possibly want now - it totally rips! The SVS sub is pretty much unnecessary now but it makes the system even more outrageous! Awesome system for 2.0 or 2.1 music or movies all for around $2300. The axr100 does not shut down anymore with the new speakers so maybe the KLH had a short or something I don't know. BTW great idea about the computer fan connected via USB!
Hi excellent review. One question, when you say set level record output, what exactly does that mean? Is that to say that the front panel main volume control knob has no affect on that outputs volume? Basically I'd be using a pair of powered speakers, what outputs would I use? Thanks.
This is kind of a off question from the Cambridge review. I see alot of systems vintage and new with either CD players or streamers stacked right on top of the receiver, even turntables. Isn't that a risky move because of heat? Any chance of a Wiim Ultra review? Keep up the great reviews. I like the fact that you open the hood and point things out. I've learned a lot from your videos.
Jim, Great question. Yes & No. In the case of the AXR100 it is fan cooled so heat is not an issue. That said the only time I stack like that is for the review shots. Normally I wouldn't and curiously it is not for heat reasons. I try to keep everything a fair distance apart because of Electro-Mechanical Interference (EMI) & Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) concerns, especially with sensitive digital circuitry like streamers and DACs. I am not sure about a WiiM Ultra review. I would have to buy one to do that. There are a lot of reviews already so... Thanks so much for all your support Jim. I really do appreciate it.
Thank you sir. My fear is that with products like WiM there is a lot of hype, tons of reviews and I am afraid I would just add to the noise. Maybe I will. I also have to be interested in the product and frankly WiiM doesn't move the needle that much for me. I have found that power supplies can be sources for both type of interference.
If you get the opportunity, try the musical fidelity A1. To my ears, it’s a very special integrated amp. It won’t win any awards on clarity or detail, but I promise you’ll be emotionally engaged….
Such a great review, I wish you threw in a comparison against the competition. How would you compare it to the Yamaha A-S501 ? I really enjoyed this. Why is the CXA81 so much more expensive ?
In my opinion it is better sounding than the Yamaha unit. It has better dynamics and a much fuller sound. Watch my review of the CXA81 MKII and see. Thanks for watching.
Bill, If you are interested Cambridge does sell open box/refurb units on eBay and they have the AXR85 at $339 right now. BTW, that is how I got my AXR100. It is also less expensive than the CXA35. Nice phono stage as well. @@OldGuyHifi Yeah! I second the eBay store. That's exactly where I purchased mine a few months ago. I got it for around $360 as they were running a deal around January. It arrived DOA and I contacted Cambridge and they sent me a brand new one! so I ended up getting an AXR100 for about $360.
It sounds very good, I have them on my system, but recently I added a S.M.S.L SU-1 outboard DAC, and omg, this has made such a huge difference, cost only £67 in the UK from Amazon, the sound opened up so much more, I also run my turntable through it as well with similar results !
I'm very undecided between the Cambridge Audio AXR100 (or the AXR85 because it's at an excellent price, not needing the DAC) and the Marantz PM6007, what do you recommend?
@@OldGuyHifi In a local store they are trying to convince me to buy the Nad c316bee v2, which I think is a good amplifier, but I think the Cambridge Audio AXR85 is better, but they insist on the Nad (I suspect they don't have the Cambridge AXR85 in the store). What do you think? The Cambridge AXR85 is better than the Nad c316bee v2!
Great review and to the point and as many mentioned earlier, glad you focused on sound quality rather than price. My question: to pair it with a streamer, why not Cambridge dac magic plus ? Thank you
The DAC Magic Plus is not a streamer it is an DAC only. For streaming, my first choice is the Cambridge MXN-10. It had a built in DAC or I sometimes use the AXR100's internal DAC. Both provide great sound.
My old JVC KD-V6 cassette deck died and I found a different, used JVC deck in great working condition and when I connected to an old Onkyo TX-NR809 noticed most receivers nowadays don’t have tape in/out connectors! Thanks for the great review. Wish I could listen to a CA receiver and compare to my current system. How does the AXR100 sound compares to the amp on the EVO150? I still can’t find the playlists, no community tab in my screen.
For me the Linton is the biggest disappointment ever after the buchards S300, I have now the the axr100 and monitor Audio silver 100, this is a very good match
I just got a CXA81 MkII Friday and I am burning it in right now. My guess is that it will be the same as yours. Watch this space for the review in couple of weeks. I am going to compare it to the Audiolab 6000.
Bernardo, Yes. The MXN10 does very well with that type of music. It does very well with any type of music. I have listened to a lot of Vivaldi, Bach and Mozart with excellent results. It also does well with complex fusion Jazz like Miles Davis "Bitch's Brew." One of the nice things about it is, if you ever want some more performance, you can always add an external DAC. The MXN10 will scale up with much more expensive gear. I have used to feed signal to DACs costing upwards of $2K USD. I use in almost every review that I do. It is very good. Thanks so much for watching and asking.
@@OldGuyHifi thank very much for your response. I own a bluesound Powernod2 and classical music played on the Powernod2 always seems dry and tonally incorrect especially compared to CD. Best, Bernardo
I think the weak link in the Bluesound is the DAC. They went for a low cost chip. The MXN10 use a very good ESS chip set. Good luck. Let me know how it goes. Thx.
i have a denon - avr4306 receiver and want to upgrade to a stereo receiver. Would the cambridge AXR100D be a good choise??? will i notice the different in sound quality???
Nektarios, That is a tough question. That Denon unit was pretty expensive. The Cambridge is not a surround unit. It is only 2 channel. Denon's house sound is warmish and a bit thin in the bass and mid-bass. The AXR100 has a warm, smooth sound and good authority in the bass and mid-bass. There may be a μικρούλι amount of roll off in the top end but it is never fatiguing or hard to listen to. The AXR100 throws a huge sound stage and images beautifully. I hope that helps you. Ευχαριστώ που είδατε το βίντεο και σχολιάσατε!
I am interested in buying one of these. I do see some complaints about the cooling fan. You still have not heard that fan? But you keep this unit behind glass? I would think a person could change out that fan quite easily, would you agree with that? I am retired and have started listening to music again, but I like cd's, especially the old original cd's. I also listen to radio, mostly a school's radio broadcast.
The only complaints I have heard about fan noise have come from folks who listen at very loud levels i.e., at a constant 80dB and up. Yes, mine lives behind glass but, I often use it out in the open and at 65 to 75dB the fan never runs. I am not sure there is a reason to change the fan. The few times I have heard run it was very quiet. I hope that helps. Thanks for tuning in.
I've had an axr100 for 18months and never heard the fan. It has a large cooling grille at the back. I wonder if people experiencing fan noise haven't allowed enough space behind this grille?
Hi Ed, I'm paranoid about the fan. Most complaints in users' reviews are about the fan. Can you see what make/model/size the fan is, so that one might consider an upgrade to a Noctua fan? From what you've shown us, it looks like it'd be a fairly simple modification. Thanks!
Do you plan on playing it very loud with inefficient speakers? I use mine out in the open often and have never heard the fan. I suggest you reach out to Cambridge for that fan information. I can't see any markings on mine.
@@OldGuyHifi Thanks for replying Ed. I did manage to find the fan info by scouring the web and youtube. The original fan is Model: JSL JDH8025S 12V 0.35A 808025MM 8CM. Outside of the fan business, how would you directly compare the Akitika Gt-102 to the AXR100? I currently have the Z4 version of the Akitika driving Wharfedale Lintons, and it really is great. But as as we all do, I wonder what could be even better, for a good price. I'm running a Geshelli DAC --> Topping Pre-90 --> Akitika GT-102 Z4 --> Lintons
@@naastradamus The AXR 100 while have much better dynamics and headroom. It is a very detailed but it has a smooth sound to it. Huge soundstage and great bass performance. IMHO. I would not replace my AXR 100 with the Z4.
Hello. My front JBL floor standers are 6 ohm and my rears are 4 ohm. Does it have individual A/B ohm settings or is it automatic? Great review by the way.
I wouldn't run both pair at the same time. I have had 4 ohm speakers on it without any issues. The is no 4vor 8 ohm setting. The amp is ballsy enough that it won't care. Just don't run both pasture simultaneously. Thx for tuning in.
@@OldGuyHifi thanks for the reply. I currently "y" connect two Dynaco ST 70's for front and rear out 4 ohm taps and have done this for a few years now with no problem on the same set of speakers front and rear. I love tube but thought about setting up a 2nd system in the bedroom and going solid state and this amp is one I was looking at. May look at some 8 ohm speakers to go with it as I really like the full 4 speaker sound with a sub.
Cool review! I’d like to see your take on how the Aiyima A70 with the Sparkos or the Bursen op amp upgrades compares to the AXR100 (sound wise). It seems the A70 could be considered the top of the fun-fi category in amps. Kinda curious about how the hot rodded fun-fi compares to the bang for your buck hifi category amp. Looking forward to your reviews on the DACs you got coming up!
Michael, I do own an A07 which has the exact same TI amp chip as the A70 and I have rolled a lot of op-amps through it. Sparkos, Burson TI 1656s, NOS Burr Brown chips, etc. Honestly there is no comparison. The Cambridge is so much better. Class D chip amps like the Aiyma don't product very much current. Speakers run on AC 20Hz to 20KHz. You measure current in amps not watts. Chip based Class D amps don't have the current capability of any Class A/B amp. It doesn't matter how big the power supply is. They max out at maybe 6 amps and take an amp or two away to power the non-amp circuitry and maybe 4 -5 amps on a good day? The AXR100 can produce +/-12 amps to the speaker terminals. I like my A07 for the desk top but it couldn't cut it in the main room. Great idea though. Thanks for tuning in.
@@OldGuyHifi Wow I really appreciate your answer on this being a current issue. I realize that watts can be mostly voltage or mostly current. I never thought of that making a difference at the speaker terminals. I guess the voltage (pressure) current (flow) analogy might apply here. Correct me if I’m wrong but the signal is carried by voltage variations on the speaker wire. That voltage change is relatively fixed between amplifier types other wise the sound would be corrupted. So at every given voltage/transient the available current at that moment is much higher for class A/B than for class D (fun-fi) even though on paper the wattage ratings are similar. I realize that this difference is probably much more significant than the addition of load Independence frequency response feature recently brought to the table on the newer Fossi and Aiyima models. Anyways sorry for this response being so long winded but im really excited to learn something new.
One way to think about it is: watts are like horsepower and current is like torque. F1 cars make a lot of horse power at the top of the rev range but they don't make enough torque to pull the peel off a banana (Class D chip amps). A big lazy V8 typically doesn't need to rev high but, can pull down a house at low RPM because they make torque. So, Class AB amps are kind of the best of both worlds, they make good horse power (watts) but have a good torque (current) reserve for when needed. Big toroidal transformers make that possible. Actually the signal on a speaker wire is current, AC alternating between 20Hz & 20kHz. Of course watts are component of that signal but it is the current that does the work. Does that make sense? Thanks for the great comments. I love this stuff.
@@OldGuyHifi Ah! Thanks for the further clarification! I was thinking that the signal on the speaker wire was alternating voltage not current for some reason. Anyways conceptually understanding what electricity is doing seems to be difficult. At least I understand the difference between the cheaper class D and A/B now. I also understand that the higher end class D is a different story. For example that beautiful orchard audio you reviewed.
@@michaeldina1103 Yes. That and my EVO150 both produce a lot of current. They both actually discrete Class D so current isn't an issue. The EVO150 can product 17 amps and I think the OA amp is about 25 amps.
Daniel, Either is ok. I do prefer the AXR100's built in DAC. It is very resolving and smooth. Since you have both, wire up the WiiM to an analog in and take the optical into the AXR100 and switch back and forth. You will figure out which one you like best. Keep me posted. Thx.
@ Been going back and forth with wiim pro+ and axr100 dac for 3 weeks and settled on wiim’s. I’m new to hifi and still learning how to understand measurements. I did a lot of experiments on my setup which is wiim, axr100, kef q150 and svs sub. I first noticed the weird sound around the bass area and found out it’s a problem with q150. So i played around with the axr100’s tone control and switching dacs. Axr100’s dac has deeper bass but the wiim’s sounds punchier. Then i finally fixed the bass by masking with the svs sub. I went up to 140hz just to mask the distortion on the kef’s and found that on the sub, placing it almost center of the speakers and use negative polarity makes the bass sounds coming from the speakers. A few more tweaks on axr100’s tone controls, sub volume and dacs then i finally made it sound great for me. I did room correction setup on wiim just to see how my experiments measures and found that i settled on the more neutral sounding. Though, i choose not to use the room corrections eq or eq. I really love how it sounds now, been listening to music all day!
@@danielcabel8203 I am so glad you found the sound you like. I am not a fan of the WiiM's Room EQ either. Keep me posted on your journey. Thx and have a Happy New Year! With new tunes!
Good point. I didn't choose the CXA-81 because as you mentioned it is disco'd and it doesn't have tome controls which can be important for many folks. FYI, I do have a CXZ-81 MkII on its way to me so, watch this space. Thanks for watching.
I owned the OG CXA81 for a few years. Never missed not having tone controls. It sounded great as is. It or the v2 is my recommendation for an integrated amp under $1500. The balanced inputs, sub and preamp outs, and quality on board DAC made it a great anchor for my system. Another bonus was it looked great stacked with the CXNV2.
Errol, Thanks for coming back. FYI, I have a CXA81 MkII on its way to me for review. I will also have an Audiolab 6000. That should be fun. Watch this space.
Great insightful video, thanks! Do you have any famiiarity with audiolab 6000a? Trying to decide between that and the axr100 to pair with my denton 80s
@@OldGuyHifiwatched! Interesting, and leaned into some abstract concerns I had from what I read. But I saw the CX61 or 81 in the background- got a review of that incoming? Again I'm interested to know whether it's worth the jump from the axr100...
@@BillChapman-d6j Wow! I bet that sounds amazing. That is the perfect smallish system. The AXR & the Dentons? That must be wonderful. I am so glad you are enjoying your system. Keep me posted.
@@OldGuyHifi Thanks. And do you suggest to use an external DAC with it or its internal DAc is good enough? In case which DAC do you suggest for axr100d + 3030i?
Honestly, to me all the bluetooth schemes sound the same to me. The DAC in the AXR100 is very good the bluetooth sounded quite good. I think it is 5.0. Thx.
In another of your videos (forgive me can’t remember-speaker review?) i thought i heard you say the 85 had more bass/dynamics than the 100? I thought it odd when i heard cuz usually the higher number unit is the more advanced (and $$$). Can you sort this for me?
Hello and good evening. New subscriber here. 45 years old and just getting into building my audio setup. Just picked up the audio technica lp120, Cambridge axr100, and for speakers I went with the KEF q-series 150. What do you think?
Blake, That will be an great system. All good choices, all good units and all good sounding. I really love my AXR100 and I hope you get as much enjoyment out of yours as I do from mine. Thanks.
Stokić, The good thing about the AXR100 is that it will sound good with almost any speaker. I personally like Wharfedale, Elac, and Polk. I do think that KEF, Dali and Paradigm would go well also. It is a very easy unit to pair speakers with. Please let me know what you decide to do. Thank you so much for watching.
I really enjoy your review, but feel that as a 'reciever' it, imo, requires an HDMI/ARC input. I would rather refer to this as a preamp, although it does have a tuner module. This unit would certainly be a great center unit for a music system, but with my movie and video streaming activity, I personally need HDMI connectivity. This would replace my Emotiva TA1, but that system sounds amazing and has bass management, with preouts for power amp connectivity.
Simon, I get it. I didn't miss HDMI connectivity as I just ran an optical to the unit. I don't really watch any TV or do any gaming. That TA-1 is a great price for sure. You have got a great system. I hope all is well and I appreciate your friendship sir.
@@OldGuyHifi I understand not everyone has the same needs or requirements, I use a Marantz AV8801 in my 'main' system as my receiver, that I got secondhand for $600 and at the prices today, it would take a very special audio visual receiver to replace it, connected to several MA500 monoblocks, for my visual, gaming and music pleasure. So for now I am very set. All is well beside a little area flooding and I too appreciate your friendship and acceptance of mine. Take care.
Absolutly. The AXA35 is a chip based amp and the AXR100 is fully discrete and very powerful. It also has a very nice built in DAC and can handle two pairs of speakers. It also sounds wonderful. Thx.
@@OldGuyHifi I have r51 Klipsch speakers, the 500 and 600 are on sale for under 300,Kef are 350,what speaker would you recommend paired with the Cambridge 100,thanks.
Hi this might be an incredibly stupid question but I am just trying to be certain before I buy this (vs the DAC-less AXR85), only the digital inputs should go through the DAC correct? There is no reprocessing of data through the RCA ins? I already have an external DAC which I am fond of the sound on, and would love to send the signal from that through this unit and out to speakers without a second round of processing.
The AXR100 does not digitize any of the analog/line inputs. Only the Coax/Toslink inputs run in to the internal DAC. You are safe. Your external DAC will do the processing and the AXR100 will do the amplification. Great question. Thank you. Keep me posted on your experience with the AXR100.
I have an axr 100 and shopping for new speakers. I get worried that speakers with 4 ohm nominal impedance is gonna make it over heat or under power the speakers. I wish Cambridge validated a 4 ohm rating
I have run 4 ohms speakers on mine without issue for extended periods. I have not tried the Buchardt's though. Lots of Audio companies have reduced or stopped making note of their 4 ohm rating. As I understand it, the EU has changed the power rating tests and it is supposedly very brutal and does not reflect real world usage scenarios. Let me know what you deicide. Thank you.
I run mine through a pair of Q-Acoustics 3050i floor standers, what a combo, absolutely stunning sound, highly recommend these speakers to go with the AXR100D.
Taffy, I you add an MXN10 you will get a terrific internet radio function with local channels, plus a very good streamer. I did a video about that if you are curious. That CXA80 is a very good sounding, well built unit. I like those.
Hi Ed, I own similar model AXR-85 without DAC. I am on the market for new matching bookshelf speakers. What are your recommendation lets say below $600 USD and below $1000 USD?
Ivo, The AXR85 is a great unit and a fantastic value. I really like the Elac DBR62s as they pair very well with the AXR sound. I use a pair as my reference bookshelf speakers. Review in a few weeks. In and around the same price point as the Elacs, I would also look at the Wharfedale Diamond 12.2s. They match up very well also. For a bit more money I like the Monitor Audio Bronze 100s. They have a bit more energy up top and image very well. I would also recommend the GoldenEar BRX. They will surprise you with their full sound and bass response. I hope I was able to help you. Thanks so much for tuning in and sharing your system.
Either I got a bad unit, or this receiver is painfully thin. It reminds me of a cheap Chi-FI class D amp. I don't understand how one can be defective in that it will get loud but seem to have no loudness. Lots of midrange. Shrill treble Not much for bass. A Denon DRA-335 puts it to shame. Is there a loudness On function I haven't found yet ?
Hello sir from Greece. I’m new to the hobby of the turntables etc. I choose for my first the project debut evo. And now I search for good entry-mid level amp and speakers. Between the AXR100 and the Yamaha AS701 which do you prefer? Main music is rock-metal. Speakers? I find the Triangle borea br03 and the ELAC debut reference dbr62. Or something else? For a small room. Thanks a lot for your time. Every help is appreciated. :)
Max, Greetings. Thank you so much for finding my channel. The Yamaha is a nice unit but it doesn't have a lot of dynamic power on reserve. They can also sound a bit sterile. The AXR100 on the other hand is very dynamic with a big lush sound. it is a bit warm through the midrange and smooth on top. That means that with poor recordings the AXR100 still sounds very good and will tame the recording if needed. I have a pair of ELAC DBR62s (review soon) that I use as a reference bookshelf speaker and can tell you that the AXR100 + the DBR62s is an amazing pairing. Huge soundstage with depth and width. Great center image. Good bass. Because the DBR62s are front ported you can get them close to a wall in your small room without issue. I would very much recommend that combination. Please let me know what you decide to do. Thanks again for watching and asking a great question.
@@OldGuyHifi thanks a lot for your immediate answer. Perfect timing then with speakers amps and everything hahaha. That’s all I want to hear. If you suggest that combination of speakers and amp (axr100 with dbr62s).. I hope these will match with the turntable. I’m very happy. When I get all of them I will be back to tell you my experience. @@OldGuyHifi last question. I forgot it. At low level of volume is it good if I want to read a book or something like that? I hear music at normal volume, if I rock hard I volume up close to max 😂 The question is for normal use. Or I have to buy a new phono or something pre to hear good?
@@maxcavalera2845 It sounds very good at low volumes. You may want to turn the bass control up to "+2" just to compensate for your hearing at low volumes. Let me know when you gat everything set up. Thx.
Honestly it will sound exactly the same as the Pro. Early word is that the DAC in the Ultra isn't any better than the Pro/Pro+. I think there will be plenty of reviews of the Ultra available. I will tell you that the Pro was very good with the AXR100's internal DAC. I only did the Pro because nobody was doing a deep dive into the room correction. I have already sent it back. Great suggestion though. Thank you.
Muzammel, Yes for about 6 hours I did. A pair of Polk Legend L600s and there was no issue. I also ran two pair of 6 ohm speakers at the simultaneously without issue. That said I wasn't playing them at silly volume levels maybe 80-83dB. The fan was running but it didn't make noise. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching.
Agreed. No signal other than the tuner signal pass through a ribbon cable in the unit. The ribbon cables handle things like the display and powering the switches. Again no audio passes thru a ribbon cable except the tuner and frankly who cares about that? Great comment and thank you for sharing it. I appreciate your view and thoughts.
Carl. I thought about that but, with the popularity of streaming devices it didn't seem to me to be a big omission. You can also get little USB to Toslink converters to help take care of the issue. I stream from a PC so I understand. I always went to an outboard DAC so I got around that. Thank you for your comment and view.
@@OldGuyHifi Not having a USB port isn't a deal breaker for me, I run my DVD player through the AXR via the optical input, so altogether I can run a Turntable, CD plyer, DVD player, Digital Radio all in one unit, all this for so little !

Nice to see through-hole circuitry still being used. Responsible heat management (so critical). Overall, nice unit layout. 👍
They do, do a very good job building their gear. Thx for the view.
I always highly enjoy the opportunity to get a peek under the hood of gear. I don't even understand much of the circuitry, but somehow for me it adds to the character of the devices to see their insides.
Thank you!
Thank you. I am glad you are getting something from my content. Thank you for tuning and letting me know your thoughts.
Great review! Just liked and subscribed, looking forward to watching your other reviews.
Thank you so much.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support. I do appreciate it.
Hi.
Just ordered the Cambridge amp based on your recommendation.
Wow! That's great. I hope you get as much pleasure form it as I go/get from mine, Thank you. Keep me posted on your experience.
How did you get on with it please ?
Love it, great stuff brother, thanks.✊🏾
Appreciate it!
Super in-depth review, Ed. Thank you and nice shirt. 😊
Glad you liked it!
We even get some great Connecticut stations down here on Long Island, too
My younger friends don't share much enthusiasm about FM. But I grew up with it. Happy Listening !
Great video, Ed! I really enjoyed your depth and detail on this one. Especially enjoyed the look inside, and your take on thru-hole vs SMT is spot on. Now I just need to find a place to put one!
Maybe in that one room where you need some Hifi? Thanks for coming back for more and commenting.
Watching from Surrey UK, great video keep them coming.
Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
I almost got one of these, but ended up Opting for a CXA60 instead... It was a while ago, i can't remember why. I sometime have regrets because I think I'd like to listen to fM radio. In any case, Cambridge do a good job of making solid products that look and sound more expensive than they are.
Thanks Kevin for returning and commenting.
BTW, I bought mine the same way here in the US.
@@OldGuyHifi Yea, I shall keep you informed.
Not remotely interested in any of the products mentioned. But your informative reviews are must watch. This was another really good one.
Thank you, I think? What would you be interested in seeing? Maybe I can make it happen.
Thank you. I will. If there is something you would like to see let me know.
@@michaelperry3578 That amp was truly special. Thx.
@OldGuyHifi I have 2 pairs of old KEF Q-series. Q10 (10-100W @ 6 Ohm) & Q50 (10-150W @ 6 Ohm).
THANK YOU !
Why would you want to run two pairs of speakers at the same time? Are they in two different rooms? Thx.
@OldGuyHifi I use the smaller pair as monitor speakers when mixing records.
@@Realhirsi Ok but. are they both playing simultaneously?
@@OldGuyHifi It could happen. I guess if I do not play at too high volume it will be fine.
Still though some amazon reviews are not so positive about the longevity of this amp. If the return/warranty rate is rather high I am still hesitant to trust this amp as much as you do.
Great review! I've got a Cambridge Audio Azur 640r that is 16 yrs old now and absolutely love it. Huge toroidal transformer - very powerful too @ 170 wpc in 2 channel 👌
That is a beastly machine. I really like Cambridge units. Thanks for the view and comment.
Stop already Mr. Grumpy Pants!
Hi Ed. Great take on this unit. A real sleeper. Great value for the $$$. Could be the best in its price point.
Thank you my friend. I have a couple things I am going to hook up and listen this weekend. You may be able to guess what they are. ;-)
@@OldGuyHifi that’s wonderful to hear. Look forward to your thoughts on it all. Have fun Ed.

Thanks for your great review! Can I use it as a preamp? Best regards from Germany
No. It is just a receiver. Thx.
Fantastic! Love your pacing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thx.
Good video!! Can you make a video on the Cambridge audio MXN10 streamer I would like to see what it does before buying one. Thanks 😊
I have done 3 videos on the MXN10 already. Check them out. Thx.
Thanks Ed
You're awesome, keep up the good content
Thank you. I will try.
Great video. I agree on thru-hulls…wish Schiit would use this rather than surface.
For DACs and headphone stuff Surface mount is fine for low current circuits. I don't know why they don't for their big amps. Thanks again.
Another great review Ed. I have me wishing I'd picked up one of these rather than the Marantz PM7000N I have.
@@OldGuyHifi Oh I know you do Ed. I watched and liked the review you did of it. That's actually what I want to replace my Marantz.
I promise you will not be disappointed. That EVO changed my whole view of Class D amps.
When I started the title of the video, I was getting ready to ask something but come the end and you answer my question before I even asked it. Did you read my mind? ;-)
And yes the question was how the DAC compares to the MXN10.
(really really wish the A/MXN10 had 1 digital input....)
Bruno, Yes that would be nice. Your wish may come true this fall. Too early to tell. Thanks for coming back to view the channel. I do appreciate it.
Great review. Any recommendation on speaker pairing? Thanks
Honestly, the AXR100 works well with almost any speaker. I would not pair them with a speaker that is overly warm. Like a Linton. That said it works arresting with the Diamond series. Also, Dali, SVS, and Q Acoustic.
Great review, next week I'm testing the 100 and the 85 on B&W 606s S3. Have you reviewed the 85?
I think you will find that they are almost sonically identical. I can't confirm it but I think they are the same amp. I am sure you will find that they both sound great. Keep me posted on your thoughts. Thx.
@@OldGuyHifigood to know, I will update you after the session 👍
@@OldGuyHifi I thoroughly tested both as well as the Arcam A5. Hands down, the Cambridge was better. The AXR100 was put to B&W 606's S3's..wow! Punchy, rich warm sound with a massive soundstage! Blew socks off the Arcam which was priced at £300 more than the Cambridge! The Arcam was not accurate at all and very bright sounding, no midrange at all. Cambridge was taken home that day 👍
Room correction on Wiim is a joke.
Apart from that, streaming capability and quality is just awesome.

Just writing to let you know I got the unit with the noisy fan swapped. Great service from Cambridge Audio. I had to wait a couple of weeks to be available to collect. They delivered the replacement three days later. This unit is fine and no issues with the fan. Very happy.
That's great. They are a good company. Thx for watching.
@@OldGuyHifi Thank you
I know how much you like the AXR 100 but what you replace it with please keep up the good work 👍
I did, more or less, replace it but the replacement was $3000 USD.
Thanks.
You don't a unit like the AXR100 for powered speakers. Get a nice streamer with an input for analog in case you want to do vinyl. Thx.
@@OldGuyHifiI like your take on things as far as reviews go. Never considered the EMI or RFI. Interesting.
Good stuff! Thanks Ed.
Thank you sir.
If you get the opportunity, try the musical fidelity A1. To my ears, it’s a very special integrated amp. It won’t win any awards on clarity or detail, but I promise you’ll be emotionally engaged….
I will see if that is possible. I do have the Cambridge CXA81 MkII and an Audiolab 6000 heading my way soon. That should be fun.
Great review Ed. Unfortunately the AXR100 is not in my budget. How do you think the sound would compare with the AXA35? I'm a big vinyl lover. Thanks!
Bill, If you are interested Cambridge does sell open box/refurb units on eBay and they have the AXR85 at $339 right now. BTW, that is how I got my AXR100. It is also less expensive than the CXA35.
If you don't need the DAC the AXR85, sounds near as makes no difference, the same as the AXR100.
@@OldGuyHifi thank you for clarifying and your prompt response 🙏

No. Optical connections don't have any control functions, just a digital audio.

I have had the CXA81 integrated and I agree that they have a great wide soundstage but I do wish it were also a little bit deeper.
I just got a CXA81 MkII Friday and I am burning it in right now. My guess is that it will be the same as yours. Watch this space for the review in couple of weeks. I am going to compare it to the Audiolab 6000.
Love it again great help good video thanks
Thanks Stuart. I am glad to help.
Thanks for reviewing Axr 100 and MXN 10. Can you tell me if the MXN 10 is able to play complex music like symphonic and chorus. Thank you
Bernardo, Yes.
@@OldGuyHifi thank you very much!!!
@@ralpabetical Thank you, good to know! I'm going to get one once payday is here on the 3rd. I look forward to it.
@@ralpabetical Great observation, That could be the issue. I have only ever seen 2 or 3 complaints and they were worded almost identically. Hmm.

@@OldGuyHifi Thanks Again Ed.
@@naastradamusI am now aware of the fan's dimensions, and I am grateful.
Did you replace it with Noctua?
Which dac should i use? Wiim pro plus dac vs axr100 dac?
I would pick up a CXA81 instead. They are discounted to 900 because of the MK II

Yes really been looking at this:)

Thanks.
Who are the speakers you recommend for cambridge axr 100
Stokić, The good thing about the AXR100 is that it will sound good with almost any speaker. I personally like Wharfedale, Elac, and Polk. I do think that KEF, Dali and Paradigm would go well also. It is a very easy unit to pair speakers with. Please let me know what you decide to do. Thank you so much for watching.
I have a pair of Q Acoustics 3050i, they sound amazing on this amp !
Take care.
Is the 100 better than the 35 for 200 more, thanks.
Absolutly. The AXA35 is a chip based amp and the AXR100 is fully discrete and very powerful. It also has a very nice built in DAC and can handle two pairs of speakers. It also sounds wonderful. Thx.

@@OldGuyHifi thanks for getting back to me,will do
Hi this might be an incredibly stupid question but I am just trying to be certain before I buy this (vs the DAC-less AXR85), only the digital inputs should go through the DAC correct? There is no reprocessing of data through the RCA ins? I already have an external DAC which I am fond of the sound on, and would love to send the signal from that through this unit and out to speakers without a second round of processing.
The AXR100 does not digitize any of the analog/line inputs. Only the Coax/Toslink inputs run in to the internal DAC. You are safe. Your external DAC will do the processing and the AXR100 will do the amplification. Great question. Thank you. Keep me posted on your experience with the AXR100.
Sub woofer out?
Yes. Crossed over @200Hz.
I have an axr 100 and shopping for new speakers. I get worried that speakers with 4 ohm nominal impedance is gonna make it over heat or under power the speakers. I wish Cambridge validated a 4 ohm rating
Like buchardt s400 mk2 at 87 db efficiency and 4 ohm load. Is my axr 100 enough to justify spending that kind of money?
I have run 4 ohms speakers on mine without issue for extended periods. I have not tried the Buchardt's though. Lots of Audio companies have reduced or stopped making note of their 4 ohm rating. As I understand it, the EU has changed the power rating tests and it is supposedly very brutal and does not reflect real world usage scenarios. Let me know what you deicide. Thank you.
I run mine through a pair of Q-Acoustics 3050i floor standers, what a combo, absolutely stunning sound, highly recommend these speakers to go with the AXR100D.
I have a CXA80, wish it came with a tuner.

No. No loudness. Thx for watching.
