Splitting a box with a friend. He's getting the soulless, monstrous bad guys. I'll be getting the Tyranids.
Only issue is who gets the cool book... I'm considering asking him if I could give him a tenner or so to keep it, so he effectively gets a deeper discount on his half. We have a pre-order secured at our FLGS so we'll be paying £65(!!!) each
Just cut the book in half... problem solved!
@Jarlaxle Daerthe Brilliant. Then I can kitbash the second half! Maybe with the Battletech manual?
What did you wind up doing?
@APFlood I ended up doing just this, I gave my buddy £55 for all the nids and I sourced the rulebook and mission cards from The Troll Trader as they were slightly better pricing than what eBay was offering. I plan on building my nids this weekend!
As a new Warhammer 40k fan, I wanted EVERYTHING that was in that box. So I bought it. My best purchase in my life so far
Awesome, I'm thinking of buying mine this weekend! It will be my first 40k experience. Did it have everything you needed to play?
I dipped my toes in Warhammer with the Introductory Set. The only things I bought other than that was an x-acto knife and can of rustoleum 2x flat black primer. Marines and ‘Nids are constructed, all are primed and the marines have their second coat of Macragee Blue and I’m HOOKED my local hobby shop has like 18 Leviathan Sets left and said they would sell me one for $185 that’s 26% off!!!
Got it for 185! They only had 4 left. Got the marines all put together and most spray primed ultramarine blue from army painter lets go!! Now i gotta decide between a battle foam pack 180 with 40K combat patrol leviathan space marines load out or Citadel battle figure case.
I just did some rearranging in my hobby room and found a sealed box of Indomitus under a pile of other things - I don't think Leviathan will fare any better so I'll not be getting it. Some of the new sculpts look good though, I hope people have fun with it.
You keen to get rid of that Indomitus box?
This is where I am. I did open the box but all the models are still on the sprues, LOL.
@@shannonsteven3982 Heh - no, it'll stay on the old pile of opportunity for a bit longer I reckon - you never know when the urge to build and paint random stuff will strike!
Same with my indomitus models. I didn't even get the whole box but still have to do those. Ha.
Can I have it? Lol
My friend and I played 20 years ago. We just recently got back into it for nostalgic reasons. This box is perfect for us.
Same here about a month ago after a 15 year hiatus! Models have improved so much aye 😂
the hype for 10th edition has given me so much motivation to paint the models i already own that i don’t really want to buy this box and work on that instead, which was probably not their intention lol
Same for me 😂
For me it is just assembling both nids and space marines I have owned since 5th edition.
yeah same here too... I got a enough plastics to keep me busy during 10th
Kinda works for me. The Combat Patrol system in 10th sounds great, for someone that has limited time and resources. I had an attempt with 8th and fell off.
Ditto
I genuinely appreciate this video. I was getting caught up in a fomo frenzy, and realized I am unlikely to have to hobby time for it. I am budgeting that time for the next warcry and Old World.
The worst part about the Leviathan Box set, is it is not balanced. It is heavily slanted into the Space Marines side. Many people say you need to add nearly 200 points of Tyranids to balance it out. Money wise you get quite a bit worth of Tyranids though, just not enough to make it balanced.
I've not played since the 80s when a buddy introduced me to Warhammer Fantasy Battle... we spent hours playing that simple game. Warhammer 40k has always been on my radar being a huge fan of the books and lore. Now as an older gamer with plenty of disposable income it seemed like a cost effective way to dive into the hobby.
Im new(returning) to the hobby and primarily will be collecting Eldar. However I have decided to pick this up for the Combat Patrol selections for the Space Marines and Tyranids so that I have other forces to play against with my ELdar with my kids.
Leviathan Box is perfect for me as i play and collect and paint custom space hulk games at home and i love both the the space marines and Tyranid armys. Im from the UK so it would cost me around £150 so bargain.
Dude that is awesome do you have some social media or soemthing to see your work?
@@darksisteroflimbs6373 Im not in anyway a youtuber or anything like that. My work wont get any awards anytime soon but massively enjoy getting stuck in. Playing space crusade back in 90s and watching aliens gave me loads inspiration. with the launch of leviathan it just up the game for me as my new project is currently getting underway My new space hulk is simply called Luna which is a pirate ship well it was until the tyranids came on bored 😂
Great video as always, Uncle.
Also, just got my hands on the print version of Majestic 13, and it’s great. Can’t wait to get it to the table.
Keep up the good work.
All good points, Adam. You released Majestic 13 at a perfect time, just a few days before the David Grusch story 🛸
It’s all just part of the marketing campaign. Thanks for watching!
It's $420 here in Australia. I vividly remember buying the Dark Imperium set in 2019 for only $250 Brand New at a Gamesworkshop store. You can say what you want about 'inflation' but that price jump in plastic over just 4 years is absolutely ridiculous ... cool models though 😅
And the combat patrols suddenly costing an extra $50 or $60 is insane to me. I haven't bought a model in about 2 years now
I'm super glad I called up my LGS early enough to be number 12 on their list basically as soon as the launch box was announced. I'm seriously looking forward to that book! My buddy is a Xenos fan and I of course like Space Marines so I'm giving him all the Nids. While I'm not immediately painting the contents (still finishing up my 2k pts of Tsons) I'm extremely excited to make my Custom Chapter! Hope they release some more flexible rules for Chapter Masters, as mine is a psyker, but either way I'm looking forward to this launch!
This is like one of those deprogramming sessions for leaving a cult.
An exceptionally level-headed video. An excellent was to help curb expectations for some.
That being said, I'm looking at the Neurotyrant and thinking it'd be brilliant for Majestic 13.
I want to buy it, but am not sure that'll be possible. In Australia, my FLGS and the two biggest online retailers didn't get enough copies to cover their reservation list.
You are SO right about local store as source for boxes. I booked the two kill team sets (prior to ashes of faith) through my store no worries. These sold out in seconds on the GW site. As usual thoughtful. I appreciate you rowing back against FOMO.
You left out my personal favorite reason to buy the new box, to make gags about it being a new version of Space Hulk.
I never even took the Indomitus Box Set models off the sprues.
This box is pretty much perfect for me my two favorite factions are the space marines and the hungry space bugs
I bought the Orks Combat Patrol because 1) I was able to buy it off the shelf 2) no FOMO 3) had just finished painting a test mini so had the colour scheme nailed down already and 4) ORKZ
I have too many of the big boxes GW has made over the years, and quite frankly I’ve never come close to finish painting any of them!
Also, having the core rules and data sheets be available digitally is great. I have decided never to buy any physical books from GW again (Blood Bowl as the exception) as they are frequently made outdated.
I still buy the books as there new system proof. I want to read my height in there books. I have only read 2 books on pc and it strains my eyes more then books. There books are not as tuff as the old ones though. Hell I opened mine to fast and dented it lol
I've had a break from 40k since 7th edition. Im So hyped for this. Battle for Macragge was my introduction. Leviathan is how my son is about to be introduced to it! ❤
I think as beginners box it's absolutely perfect. Everything you need is right there to jump into the hobby. As for myself I've already got two large armies I'm happily painting through for Horus Heresy. I'll likely get the new rulebook on its own, but that's it.
if you want to see a perfect starter box from a gamer point of view then look at Mantic's Deadzone.
They even have a paper map with instructions for your first game ... (only downside is the resin minis and the build instructions aren't as detailed as GW's)
Why might I not want the Leviathan box...Because my Indomitus box is still in cellophane. Which I bought to jump start an active return to the hobby. Then I started a 8-12 week remodel of my house...Which should wrap maybe in the next 3-4 weeks.
Local stores here in Australia were getting around half of the allocation they requested. So either GW are holding a lot back for full retail, or it will sell out instantly.
that's happening everywhere, uk included
Yeah. If they can't provide a 40k launch box, they really have no business releasing anything else.
Yeah, around half is what I have heard as well, also weird that this is the third video I have seen released the day before launch stating "maybe you don't want to buy it".
@@Gumlass1especially after they screwed the other releases leading up to 10th ed because they had to switch production to make up for the numbers they need for 10th.
I accidentally talked out my friend from getting one. He was feeling the FOMO and I said I'd play Combat Patrol with him if he got a box, but that he can also wait a few months and he can always find one cheaper. And if not, we're not lacking things to play.
Remember that there will be 3 levels of 10th edition start playing boxes coming, just like they did with 9th edition. Those were cheaper, had both armies, terrain, and the updated rule book.
Yes, I mentioned that at the end of the video. Thanks for watching!
There was that guy you couldn’t get though. The demon summoner dude.
I mean, I got the 8th and 9th edition boxes at launch, and never got around to playing any games of either. And still haven't painted the Marines out of 9th.
Me and a friend are each getting one and then splitting so I’ll have double space marines, he will have double tyranids. First priority will be building and painting a combat patrol so we can have a battle for the event via the code.
I suspect the Combat Patrols will be the models they'll pick for the "proper" Starter Boxes, so this might be another way to get the 2 combat patrols, with more gubbins to play the game(dice, measures, terrain). The Leviathan book has the Crusade Rules/ the first Crusade Supplement, which will be released separately. The Leviathan in that form, not just the cover but also the contents(Lore+Combat Patrol Rules+Core Rules+Crusade Roles) will not be available again. Getting the book except for collection reasons will be not a good idea, though, as we can expect the rules be amended/faq'd/eratta'd pretty soon. I used my proper 9th edition rulebook.. 1 or 2 times?
This video has been super helpful, thank you. After thinking about it now I don’t really need the box for what I want to do
You need to remember Atom, they need to market their starter boxes to everyone ranging from old school 40K vets to people that have never even heard of 40K before.
This means that stuff like the book needs to have a lot of fluff and art and what ever else to make it feel more full and really bring a new player into the lore, the atmosphere and just the overall gritty aesthetic of 40K.
A vet player like you might say that it’s all a little to much and to fluffy, but a brand new player might just be blown away by the sheer volume of material they’re receiving in the starter box.
My biggest issue with this is that it seems like a fancy version of the 4th edition Battle for Macragge, which I got back in the day. And I’m already swimming in tyranids…
Plus I managed a grand total of ONE solo test game of 9th edition…
If this was not a limited launch special, I definitely would not be buying. Now I’m undecided…
Uncle Atom's "Midwest nice" is so strong even telling you to not get something he says "why you MIGHT not want" 😂
The only reason why I might not want it, because my pile of shame is already big enough, but that´s just a reason no hinderance.
It's more then a combat patrol on both sides. Both the Tyranids and space marines combat patrols will be missing quite a bit of contents from each side. Theirs about $400+ of models on each side. Combat patrols have never been anything close to that much value. Of course their still great value but this box set has almost 1000$ of value if you were to buy everything separately. Then you look at say a space marine combat patrol that has about 200$ worth of models and they sell for 160$ on there website. Of course their are some that hold more value then others but overall the combat patrol boxes aren't outstanding deals like this is. I believe you can actually see the new combat patrols in the combat patrol section of the book including, the Tyranid combat patrol is no longer in there and was replaced by a different combat patrol and so was the space marines. I watched AngryJoe go through the book and there was all factions combat patrols listed as I believe detachments? I'm not sure I don't have the book yet but I know it's in there.
Thanks Uncle Atom.
I've ordered Majetstic 13 in print, and look forward to fielding a horde of beholders as my aliens.
Until other card decks or starter boxes, the launch box "Leviathan" comes with the only missions/ battle types/ battlefield layout other than the singular 1 (only war) in the core rules.
So the cards are certainly being overlooked in terms of their importance.
You definitely tampered my expectations. My store called to confirm a pre-order for me yesterday. I'm calling them back today to cancel. I have been collecting Combat Patrol boxes for months in anticipation of 10th Edition. I have 10 CP boxes now. I'm just waiting on the CP rules and datasheets to be released so I can actually build/paint my sets, which happens on the 20th of June I believe. I was only leaning toward getting the box because I could not find a Space Marines CP box in the US. Luckily my wife took a work trip to London and found it (and others) there that I can't get here. I was surprised at how much cheaper Warhammer models are in the UK. Each CP box was about 30-60 dollars cheaper than here in the US or on Amazon.
My boyfriend and I were already interested in nids and space marines. I want tyranids, and he wants blood Angel space marines. This box is basically exactly what we needed, so it’s great value for us.
My local playgroup has a dedicated Tyranid player, and he approached me about a box split. That became a no brainer to me. I have two armies and one of them is space marines (sorry guys I’m not playing GW’s game that each marine chapter is it’s own army and you have to buy more of them for each color scheme, something GW seems to finally agree with me on in 10th).
So I get my new space marines, of which I only have about 10 unpainted ones left, and he gets his bugs.
I’m not worried about missing anything with my second army, it’s Thousand Sons so I know best we will get this edition is one new model. I love their aesthetic and it was an easy army to collect because the range is so small.
I actually like the fact that you don't necessarily _need_ the Leviathan box to start playing. Especially because there will be explicitly newbie-targeted products later down the line. Still excited, though!
I agree. I wanted a second army for small games as a change up from necrons, so getting the marine half made sense (I also just like the books). If I was good sticking with necrons, I’d just stay on course.
Getting the box my store sold the entire allocation of 100 on Thursday. My version of sanity is just buying one box. They hit the nostalgia button hard with this redo of black reach .
If i can get it for $200 before taxes ill buy it. Ill put the terminators in a badab army im starting, the flamer guys in my black templars, the dread into my marines malevolent, the stern into either my crimson fists or my alternate timeline sons of horus, and the apothecary i think into my minotaurs, the libarian is going into my horus heresy sons of horus army and the lt probably just paint him up as Ultramarines just for fun. Not sure on tyranids i like behemoth but will probably try something with a base coat of purple that goes to turquoise.
But I need alien sculpts for Majestic 13...
best use case for the Tyranid models that don't fit in the Combat patrol ? :D
Ya… really on the fence about this box, because I like all the 3D chapter specific shoulder pads, which for these leviathan models I’ll have to cut off the smooth ones to keep that theme going and just waiting for the multipart kits later would save me that trouble. But I do want a bug combat patrol. hmmm
The fact that they moved to the "all digital downloads" model will probably translate to even more expensive minis... This is my fear as I already cannot afford Miniatures (in general) and this would probably drive me out of the market. Thanks God I have a huge pile of opportunities in my basement 😅
Mine is now being delivered. Got it from a discount campaing for 155€ including delivery! I am so hyped!
The preorder is sold out less than a minute, guess I'll be saving my money for something else
I'm coming from the non tabletop aspect (cool mini collecting, painting, and lore) so I'm looking forward to the box. I don't have an Tyranids yet, and you can never have enough cool looking SM, plus the lore and art in the book is appealing to me.
Bold of you to assume that I have a significant other, but in all seriousness, this was really helpful in my decision to ultimately purchase this! I love both tyranids and space marines, and this box was super cool!
I've heard speculation that the reason the latest releases have been so quickly sold out is that GW is using most of their production to stock up on Leviathan boxes.
I just want bug, my brain is small, smooth, and ready for bug
I got the box and the more I play the space marines the more I question it. The Apothecary doesn’t attach to any squads that I have. The lieutenant doesn’t either. The captain and librarian only attaches to the terminators but only have one squad of them so just one of them can lead them. I’m still new so maybe I’m missing something.
Awesome video! just one little correction here, the leviathan Box comes with a deck of index card for each army. Thank you for showing both the upsides and downsides of the box, not a lot of people do that.
Uncle Adam, how DARE you try to temper the FOMO flames in my heart???
In my memory, starter boxes always have come with 1 or 2 exclusive models that they dont release ever separately.
It’s possible - but then you can get those models on eBay. Thanks for watching!
I'm still salty about parts of 9th. My local 40k community is solely comprised of tournament players and playing each time feels like i am just another training session to them. Plus i hate to hunt the meta (again). So this will get a hard pass from me. I have enough pretty minis to paint. And playing wise i just play a lot of skirmishers from other companies.
I've already ordered the new game I want. Majestic 13 has already shipped for me. Been looking over the pdf and hobbying for my teams. As for Leviathan, fool me once GeeDubs, shame on you, twice shame on me. Played that little game with kill team releases, not going again.
The greatly discounted price of this box is a very good reason to buy these models sooner rather than little. Once these are released separately you won't even be able to buy either faction for $250. Each army is pushing well over $425 each.
My local store had like 60+ preorders
I discovered your channel and I must say - great job. a lot of information in one place. I would have liked a little more pictures of what you're talking about, but that's not a complaint.
FOMO is real with this pre-order. I've had to talk 3 friends out of buying that have neither faction. Spend your $270 on a faction you care about.
Hey I met you at TMX! Thanks for this video and all the videos.
I’m excited to play 10th. Haven’t played 9th since like January due to busy life and work. Now I’m just waiting to get the SM codex released and I’m gona finish painting up some models I already have.
I got into 40k not too long ago with 8th edition. I got the starter set, bought codexs for Space Marines and Death Guard, and played a bit. Then GW said "Oh wait, the Space Marines Codex isn't good any more. We published A NEW codex which you now need to buy. But don't worry, even though 9th edition is coming up, this new Codex will still work".
Then 9th edition came out and the "new" 8th edition codex didn't work, you have to buy the new codex again.
I quit playing and only a few months ago was thinking "I would like to play again. Maybe I'll just pick up the 9th edition rules and codex. I'm lucky I didn't because now 10th edition is out and I'd have to buy it all again.
Back in 8th edition it was thought that "This is it! 40k as it should be. We're set. This is perfect." Then, it had tons of balance problems and rules kept being updated.
Then 9th edition came out and we thought "This is it! 40k as it should be. We're set. This is perfect." And yet, it also had problems which had to be fixed afterwards.
And now 10th edition is out and I just wonder how long I'll be before GW decides "We haven't made people buy the same $100 of books in a while. Let's make a new edition"
All the stats (and even the core rules) are available for free with this new edition. Check the ‘FAQ & Downloads’ section on the Warhammer Community website. Thanks for watching!
Just pre-ordered a Box. Probably not a great Idea but I'm not waiting for scalpers to get there first.
Mostly getting it for the Tyranids and some Marines.
Apparently at my local shop the dude turns up 30 minutes early to get ready and there was already 35 people waiting to pre order 😂
I still haven't finished painting the Battle of Macragge boxset!
Played 2nd edition and started into a little bit of 3rd edition.
No idea if I want to get back into the game.
Let’s find out.
This is the only video that is a reasonable take on FOMO marketing.
Every single hobby UA-camr got a free box but also doesn't get paid for promoting GW products.
Personally, I don't play GW games because their business model is antithetical to a hobby that takes a very long time to get ready to play an actual game with.
Luckily, there is Wargames Atlantic, Northstar Miniatures and other manufacturers that don't push the FOMO. Okay, I guess they do the Kickstarter FOMO thing but at least they only design the minis and have no control over the game rules themselves.
If it were White Scars or Salamanders in the box, then I would be tempted. I realise I can still get the shoulder pads myself, but yeah, not too tempted with the default Smufs :)
We don't even get transfers for White Scars and Salamanders in the box.
How do you not already have a ton of decals lying around already? I tossed a bunch away because they were taking up space and I wasn’t going to use them.
@@timunderbakke8756 uh, because I get f*cking Ultramarines transfers every time, and guess what, I don't play Ultramarines.
I'm not a gamer yet, but in my case I couldn't wish for a better box because I collect Dark Angels and would like to paint more tyranids, well there is one little thing I would like more - if instead of Ultramarines there were Dark Angels with new Ravenwing and Deathwing models. Overall a great price for such a thick set of miniatures. A video quite useful for new people that this is not a must have set
Who are you kidding! This is an Ork boxed set! All new stuff to loot and kitbash for da boyz! WAAAGH
I’m buying the box for my birthday tomorrow (the 21st of June) and going tyranid! Along with snagging a knight or two. Going to be kaiju’s and mechs for my two armies. Going to theme them around Godzilla and pacific rim/Gundam. Really looking forward to getting into the hobby!
I’m getting this box, and I’ve hooked up with another player to buy the SM portion of his box. Also getting it at 15% is pretty nice, so shop around fellas!
Just started a deathwatch army as a former heretic, so the marines part is a good start for that, the tyranid models go into the 4000 point army that's already there. No waste here
I... Never noticed that the TM logo at the top right was 3d and occasionally rotated before.
Could I have the one they sent you then? GW said they "Had enough for everybody" but thats not the case because they don't plan ahead properly.
Do you have any game stores nearby? I’d check with them to see if you can get one from them. The website always sells out, but local independent retailers don’t always. Also, I’ve already built the Combat Patrol from the Space Marine side and they’re half painted already. Thanks for watching!
I'm halfway through my Tzeentch daemon army with Thousand Sons and Tau on queue. I also have a Recruit and an Elite starter box that I got after I missed out on Indomitus and I haven't touched those to this day. I'll pass.
My local store cant sell the preorders and discounted the preorder. This really worries me as the same thing happened with Dominion. Dominion ended up being on holiday sale at my local store for $88...
Was so hyped for this. Then I get to the website and they already sold out of preorders. I'll keep trying through the 2 week pre order period but it's looking like I might have to wait and buy the full release on launch day. Damn...
I already preordered and paid for this. So excited. Even more because I'm trading the tyranids for another Space marine half to get extra models! Can't wait!!!
The combat patrols will be the same but lack the neurotyrant, neurogaunts and screamer killer, and for the marines, lack the Ballistus Dread, the Apothecary, the Veterans, and the lieutenant
Buy, split, sell, profit!
yes I will get it, but just in case of a miniature diorama painting project I have in mind ;)... and yes I could wait... but I can't wait =D ...
I'm going to pass on this box. Both sets of new figures look brilliant, but I've overspent on GW for the last 12 months, and my wallet needs a break! Plus, I've got loads of unpainted figures still from Indominus, the Black Templar box, and a load of Kill Team boxes I really need to work on! 😅
I want it so badly, but i can't start a second army now when I still have kill teams to build and paint
Basing it on current standards (which may be completely wrong once they release point values) I estimate this box to have 950-1000 points of space marines depending on loadouts and how they price the lasdreadnought.
I haven't really played since 4th edition. I got a space marine army and a Tyranid army both over 3000 points. I'm getting this to flesh out both armies.
Me and a friend are both getting boxes, he giving me all the SM and I’m giving him all the Tyrannids. So one group will be for my Ultramarines and the other for Black Templars
I fortunately have ran out of models to paint (even my backlog!) so its perfect.
Always wanted to get in to 40k when I was a kid, my son has started getting in to it & we got the small introductory set. Hes all about space marines, so ive got the tyranids, a store nearby has a couple boxes left still - considering getting it & putting away for xmas. The fact it has two complete combat patrols is awesome for playing at some event nights at the shop 👍
I'm waiting for mine. I just have to decide if I'm keeping the 'Nids, or giving them to my boy.
I already pre-ordered it through my local game store. I've been sitting on the sidelines since 5th edition and been itching to get my models back on the table. As much as I'm all for playing as free as possible, "$250" for this many new sculpts and a rulebook too? (And mission deck) like your recent price compares of the Combat Patrol boxes, there is just so much value in this box for those of us who play Marines and Tyranids.
I got the box. Sold the space marines, sold the book, the cards, and 1 or 2 of the HQs for the nids. and sell 10 of the termaquants. Got me a free Tyranid Kill Team and 2-3 free Big monsters for DND. #freehammer
"The box only contains space marines, tyranids, and a book with beautiful art" ... okay, you talked me into it. I'm in!! 😁
I so do NOT want this box that i would pay money to not have it if it was pushed on me to have it for free.
But i did jump on the Octarius box. That one was phenomenal.
