James Long you're right. I think he might've gotten overexposed for a period there, and the constant smart jokes in the booth were a bit too much to handle. But man I would love to be one degree removed from Al Michaels... him and Dennis must have some hilarious private convos :D
You kinda need knucklehead comments in the booth, thats why Madden excelled. Obscure references are going to fly over the heads of many, and his brash manner of speaking might further complicate live broadcasting. So I think it wasnt the right forum for him, and they made the right call. However, its a tough act to follow the iconic men of TV sports broadcasting. Another guy not mentioned here who was a genius on air was Tom Mees whenever he did hockey telecasts. Man, what a loss that was for the sport when he passed away.

Al Michaels getting dissed in this day and age is unfathomable. He still has it, just dont put him with Tony Dungy and youll be fine. Something wrong when a legendary announcer gets demoted. That would be like telling Vin Scully to take a hike from Dodgers broadcasting.

Norm was commiserating with Letterman about being fired by him from Weekend Update, and Dave mentioned his NBC days and Don Ohlmeyer thinking he was one of those ‘creative types.’ Dave went on to say that Don Ohlmeyer couldn’t create gas after a bean dinner.
