26:36 "Howard Cosell left a trail that no modern broadcaster has dared to follow." Spot on! Cosell, Phil Donahue and Howard Stern were the three great original broadcasters of my lifetime. But while Donahue and Stern have been imitated to death (and, mostly, poorly), no one has tried to be another Howard Cosell. Music Brothers, thanks for posting this. I don't want people to forget just how incredible a man we had in Cosell, and "SportsBeat" and "Speaking of Everything" broadcasts don't show up on UA-cam that much.
As a High School Football player in the late 60's & early 70's I can say every sunday before the NFL Game kickoff at noon, The Sabol's NFL Films would highlight specific postions from Coaching to Water Boy and all positions in between! As a football athlete, understanding different positions on the Grid Iron and showing Great Players, playing them along their battles against the players they lined up on the otherside of the scrimmage line! Help me to understand the game of Football better! I can say to this day as a 70 year old man , that knowledge I carry in my Brain Housing Group to this day! And they should be showed again by a different postion feature every week before each game so the viewing audience would know what NFL Greatness truly is! Ed Sabol NFL Films was ahead of it time! Ed & Steve Thank You & RIP!
Great piece by Steve Sabol. Howard Cosell was such a fascinating figure. You could love him and hate him within seconds apart from each other, and you couldn't ignore him.
Absolutely. Im a steeler fan but it didnt matter if they werent on mon night cuz it was must see tv with howard cosell, gifford and dandy don. They will never replicate that trio.
@@javiermori1710 for sure , those guys made football exciting , Howard’s half time highlights from the previous Sunday was something to look so forward to .
I had the pleasure of meeting Chet Forte when he was broadcasting on XTRA Sports Radio in San Diego in the 1990s. Chet was an absolute gentleman and class act.
9:06 Howard was not often known for his modesty but as was the wont of many other men of his generation, he chose not to mention another of his qualifications: His stellar and invaluable service as a Logistics Officer in the US Army during WW II between 1942-1945 where he was one of the youngest men to be promoted to MAJ.
I can see a huge influence from Cosell on Stephen A. Smith. The vocabulary, the cadence, the emphasis they put on words. Now, obviously Stephen A. has his own style, but there's a good deal of Howard Cosell in there.
Howard not much on style or substance but was funny to listen to. He didn't really know the dynamics of any of it, foootball baseball or boxing. He was funniest when he interacted with anyone on Monday Night Football. He was a living parody of himself which he would be aware of at times. His first announcing job was as a little league announcer how priceless would that experience be to hear.
Terry Bradshaw yea, one of the greatest ever QBs. Bradshaw can do anything. He liked to pot stir. Thats rough though. Big point is he was funny. And you learned stuff listening to him. I agree. Best broadcaster ever. Truculant lol
Howard Cosell made a disparaging remark about a girl high school classmate of mine representing the United States in Winter Olympic cross country skiing which I told her about and condemned his remark. That was the early 1970s, hopefully times have changed and we value our girls as much as the boys.
Pregame postgame and halftime all World generated by Howard cosell's halftime commentaries on Monday Night Football people don't realize that back then there was nobody doing that you wanted highlights you had to wait till the 11:00 News.
Howard was a blowhard in most sports but if you got to 20:54 you will see why he was either the greatest boxing announcer of all time or second only to Don Dunphy -- there was simply no one better
He was jealous of their ability to have played the sport, and he was jealous that they got their jobs in broadcasting based upon their ability to play a sport.
His point on what he called the ”Jockocracy” of professional sportscasting, was exceptionally accurate-with the most notable exception being his own presence in the Monday night crew. Both Gifford and Meredith were far more informative, classy, and entertaining than Howard, whose trademark and sole contribution, was his obnoxious ego. Today however, again with VERY few exceptions, the Talking Heads have zero stage presence, constantly guffawing at each other’s lame attempts at humor, and act like third graders when the teacher leaves the room.
Im laughing at Cosel when he thinks that someone talking about sports should know current events or they are not credible or qualified. Howard was just bitter becasue his ego wanted to go into politics and social commenttery and of course he was typecast as a sports guy. Its not different with women on mens sports trying to be relevant in our current sports shows and commentaries. People like to watch or listen to people who played that are interesting or informative and a colorman thats the formula. Any male with a sex life dosen't want commentators in sports that are women in the booth or on a sports commenatry show unless it a womans sport. Sorry if that offends people but the ratings in espn and most everywhere else shows that. I don't care what a woman on tv has to say about the steelers front four or Tyson Fury's jab. In real life Im all ears if a woman gives her opinion because Its not a expert setting its a social setting and their time and right and good manners make it ok. If i want to see it on Tv I want people that were in that sport and a colorman like a cosel or a curt cowdy or Brent Musburger with them
Just listen to Larry Merchant. My God, what a hypocrite. I remember when little larry got into Floyd Mayweathers face after Mayweather won again. little larry tried to humiliate Mayweather by saying he wasn't tough. Dear Lord

Love or hate him, he shined a light on taboo subjects😮
Miss the great Steve Sabol.
And his Father Ed who started NFL Films
There will never be another Howard Cosell ever. He did tell it like it is. 🏈🏈
Thanks to Ed & Steve Sabol.
Once again, producing the BEST short films ever.
I looked forward to hearing Howard’s voice on Monday night football , was never the same after him .
it really wasn't. And then it dropped off further when Meredith departed. Unfortunately.
Absolutely. Im a steeler fan but it didnt matter if they werent on mon night cuz it was must see tv with howard cosell, gifford and dandy don. They will never replicate that trio.

Yup
Howard cosell the greatest sports announcer ever 🙌

8:25 Absolute all-time classic SportsCenter commercial
Howard Cosell 🏈 Simply the Best
Took me right back to my childhood.
The back and forth with Don Meredith was classic.... sometimes better than the game
howard was an amazing man nobody was like him my god
i would loved to hear him call a hockey game!
Thank You for this

When you heard his voice on the intro and halftime highlights it made you wonder what was going to happen🏈

What did Howard Cosell say about her?
What was Howard cosell's famous last words
5:48 😑. Oh my
The fact that Rick Reilly hates him makes Cosell the best
April 6, 2000 Broadcast date on ESPN.

❤️⭐️✊
He would have been a better Senator then anything they have today.

Couldn't agree more!! (And..."Down goes FRASHAH" will forever be one of the greatest calls in ALL of sports broadcasting!!)
5:47 Well, that aged well. 😬
Even Howard got fooled by O.J. Simpson.
Ain't it the truth? Ain't it the truth?
Howard Cosell was also a lawyer.
Boy he loathed former athletes being in the booth.
He was jealous of their ability to have played the sport, and he was jealous that they got their jobs in broadcasting based upon their ability to play a sport.
5:47 That didn't age well. 🤣
When MNF was on, I would turn off the TV sound and listen to the radio broadcast to avoid Cosell.

Steven A. Smith is a low budget version of Howard Costello in my opinion. I say that because of the overuse of vocabulary but no law background.

Never lend your truck to your friend. You don't wont to be truculent.
Skip Bayless thinks he is Howard Cosell
Howard became bitter near the end. 💩 on everyone😮
Imagine if Howard was profiled on 60 Minutes
Who else went bankrupt from Datek? 🤚
The only ego that can compete with Cosell is that of Trump.
Just listen to Larry Merchant. My God, what a hypocrite. I remember when little larry got into Floyd Mayweathers face after Mayweather won again. little larry tried to humiliate Mayweather by saying he wasn't tough. Dear Lord
never liked him.
