    Gorgeous!
    Some people just have all the lovely gear.
    Loving the sound. Lo-fi ethereal. Fits my introverted Saturday evening very well.
    Going to give it a few play-throughs. Thanks for sharing.

      goawayyootoob dontwanttousemyfullname thank you! I’m glad you like it. The gear acquisition has been a slow process for me. For instance, I’ve wanted a Nagra for over 10 years, but just now got one. I thought about going modular for several years as well. Same with the Ciat machines. Just a little at a time. Thanks for watching. 🖤🙏🖤

      @@JayFrederick Slow but steady wins the race. My investments have been all over the place. Selling a lot of property at the moment, but after 7 years finally got into tape with a Fostex X-24 and an X-28 coming in this week and a Sony TCM-59V. I am head over heels in love and finally get to make the ambient I've always wanted to make.
      Thanks for the inspiration.

      It's weird your Nagra does not have the manual/automatic level selector.. You miss the beautiful compression it's capable of when recording stuff

    Hi mate! i have the same mixer and i have a question for you,if i'm not wrong you just can multitrack the 4 mono channels via USB, and i think you are putting Delay from the Boss pedal and you also have the fostex recorder into one stereo channel right ? So how you are recording everything ? Thank so much!,really cool stuff btw :)

    • @JayFrederick
      @JayFrederick  4 роки тому +1

      You can either record mic lines 1-4 or you can record the 2mix out of the usb. Choose it in the Soundcraft control panel. I'm just recording it as the finished stereo bus from the usb to computer as I don't need it the multitrack for something like this. All correct on the aux sends. Thanks for watching!!

    How do you find using the 4.2 for music production seeing as its only mono?

    • @JayFrederick
      @JayFrederick  2 роки тому +2

      It's great. Can send through stereo effects to widen or lots of other options. Not really different than any other mono signal or instrument imo so far as how to use it in production. The only limit would be sending a 2mix to it for tape saturation of the full stereo mix.

    If I may ask, what cable do I need to record for example my Op-1 into the Nagra? Do I need to ground the machine somehow too? Thanks in advance!

    • @JayFrederick
      @JayFrederick  2 роки тому

      If you want to record with the proper line in, you'll need a banana to minijack with a banana grounding lead--it would be a custom build or you can purchase from places like this: www.bugbrand.co.uk/product/banana-to-minijack-interface-cables/
      Or do what I do and record with xlr to 1/4 or 1/8 adapters and be very careful of the gain staging (i.e., very low output on the instrument line out and the Nagra preamps at a low gain setting to avoid clipping/distortion.

    Hello, could U use this machine as an echoplex? Or are the differences in speed not that different, short=slapback, long=More dreamery. And still need a mixer too? Not as an ep ready to go, I guess...Not that technical so...thanks

    • @JayFrederick
      @JayFrederick  5 років тому

      Hey Broek, i'm not sure if it would really work well as an echoplex or not. It might be possible but would take some trial and error. You'd definitely need some kind of mixer. Hope that helps. Thanks for listening.

    • @broekhoest6858
      @broekhoest6858 5 років тому

      Thanks Jay! I saw one for sale, but they're still kinda expensive...so trial and error is not really an option for me, but an echoplex is even MORE expensive :-) looking for some alternatives...

    Hi there, how would you comepare the Nagra 4.2 to the iii? any major sound differences? thanks

    • @JayFrederick
      @JayFrederick  4 роки тому +2

      apologies for the delayed response. i missed your comment. i think the 4.2 is a little more reliable. i don't think the sound quality is all that different, if any.

    • @davidwelch6796
      @davidwelch6796 3 роки тому

      The 4.2 replaced the III and had a wide number of improvements. The main improvement was two powered (switchable) mic inputs with many people modifying them with an extra mic input, internally switchable and controlled by the centre line/PB control. I never noticed any major differences in the sound quality, that was all down to mic. selection and placement. As a matter of standard practice I always set mic and playback controls to zero unless they were in use. Also I always tried to avoid setting any control to maximum unless absolutely necessary. The 4.2 is more versatile than the III or the now uncommon IV L. If you can, go for a 4.2 every time unless you enjoy working with an even older machine.

      that is the Lumix GH5 with the 12-60 Pana Leica. The IBIS plus the lens IS is a very powerful combo--all hand held.

    source > record equipment > playback
    sound effects themselves at best should be recorded on reel ,
    otherwise you play digital philes on reel.
