    HOWARDS END - 2016 4k Restoration
    Directed by James Ivory
    Written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala
    Starring Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Thompson
    One of Merchant Ivory’s undisputed masterpieces, this adaptation of E.M. Forster’s classic 1910 novel is a saga of class relations and changing times in Edwardian England. Margaret Schlegel (Emma Thompson) and her sister Helen (Helena Bonham Carter) become involved with two couples: a wealthy, conservative industrialist (Anthony Hopkins) and his wife (Vanessa Redgrave), and a working-class man (Samuel West) and his mistress (Niccola Duffet). The interwoven fates and misfortunes of these three families and the diverging trajectories of the two sisters’ lives are connected to the ownership of Howards End, a beloved country home. A compelling, brilliantly acted study of one woman’s struggle to maintain her ideals and integrity in the face of Edwardian society’s moribund conformist values.
    Howards End is part of the Merchant Ivory library of films.

    I could only imagine the effort they made in recreating Harrod's during the holidays, only to be seen for a couple of seconds in the movie. It was grand.

    Love this movie. It will always be a Timeless classic, in my humble opinion. Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Vanessa Redgrave and Helena Bonham Carter gave outstanding performances, as they usually do.

    Emma Thompson was brilliant, and so was Vanessa Redgrave. Both should have won that year. Redgrave didn't win because of politics, but she was clearly the best of the supporting players that year.

    Why is it they advertise "Howards End" as full movie and all that's on the list is an almost endless list of clips in a variety of languages? I just saw this for free on Netflix. No wonder it won awards. It captures your interest from the beginning. The actors make ti look so real. The English put out some good movies. This movie is all about peoples stations in life. Rich v. poor. The sisters were women who believed in helping the poor get out of their situation. Until one marries a wealthy man who was the cause of a poor man leaving his job and eventually to his death all because they trusted this boastful wealthy man. One sister marries this man and forgets about her ideas about helping the poor. Very damn good story. Oh what a world we live in.

    • @tanyastebbing9763
      @tanyastebbing9763 2 роки тому +1

      Too simplified. There are more layers than that. The sisters redeem themselves via Helen and Leonard's son, who will be the inheritor of the sanctuary Howard's End. Henry also submits in the end, he no longer thinks himself superior just because he stood on islands of money. Far more layers. And Ruth's wishes are finally honoured, Margaret owns and honours Howard's End. She gets that the house is alive.

    I've read there are issues with the Cohen blu ray version including an odd aspect ratio that crops some of the image and there are artifacts (specks on-screen). I've also seen images comparing the Cohen release to the previous Criterion blu ray with the Criterion images looking much better (at least to my eyes) and un-cropped. I see the Cohen blu ray is out of print, do they plan to re-release it with these issues addressed?

    I hated Henry Wilcox, as played by Anthony Hopkins, so much it was hard not to throw something at the screen. I also lost respect for Margaret for marrying him. I did not understand how she could stay with him when she learned of his deception regarding Ruth's dying wish that Margaret should have Howard's End. I liked this film, back in 1992, but I did not love it.

    • @DeepScreenAnalysis
      @DeepScreenAnalysis 5 років тому +26

      Margaret married him because she was in a position where she had to survive and he offered security. She did grow to genuinely love him. I think you need to get your head out of the romantic clouds and realise that EM Forster was writing about the real world, not your Jane Austen fantasy.

    • @paulineGao-pn6xq
      @paulineGao-pn6xq 4 роки тому +3

      @@DeepScreenAnalysis I think your point is invalid. Meg married Henry because of her "Personal Relation" according to Chapter 4. She is the one who suppressed her own identity. Yes, she believes she could have changed his attitude; unfortunately, she gives herself in. Moreover, in your supporting argument say she married him because she wanted to survive and he offered her security. The truth is she has her property: Wickham Palace. Her character is perhaps a caricature! She does not LEARN. She GIVES IN EVERY TIME. She knows his character so well but she does NOT DO ANYTHING.

      @@DeepScreenAnalysis The Schlegels were not forced to sell Wickham Place. The lease expired and the owners had a huge apartment building constructed on the land. The Schlegels had more than enough money to pay for themselves and find a new house, they were not fighting for their survival. They simply were unable to find a new house that felt like home.
      As for why Margaret married Henry and stayed with him - she first feels that being with him she can reconcile her intellectual world with his productive world, add grit and life to her beautiful but essentially sterile existence. When she realises that he's actually a broken fraud, she feels pity for him and cares for him in his last years while taking control of things and raising her nephew who will inherit everything. It's quite symbolic.
