Pulaar / Fulfulde, like many African languages, has been transcribed with the Latin alphabet since the 1960s, under the auspices of UNESCO. The African Union, which has adopted this transcript, has set up an Academy for the Development of African Languages (ACALAN). Pulaar / Fulfulde has a subcommittee called FULCOM. Pulaar / Fulfulde is one of Africa's leading languages, spoken by more than 50 million people in more than 20 countries around the world.
