8 out of 9 snares go to UNT, and 7 of those were the PASIC winning UNT Snare ensemble this past fall. (The only non-UNT snare is the girl on the end.) Just crazy consistent technique across that line. Not sure how many of the rest of them are from UNT.
Man this comment isn’t brought up enough! 3 drum judges all day. One on the field, one in front of the pit, and one in the box. It’s a shame what DCI has done regarding that.
@@joshudenbut they always had love. The judges judged the groups so much they knew when to come to the front and go back on to the field. They're getting more love but the battery is barely getting any at all
Parent of one of the quads. :) i asked about the sticks under the stands too. Basically the equivalent of putting a piece of paper under a leg of a wobbly table. 😄 its so their drums are level.
@@agedoutpodcast The interesting thing many people don't notice is that the members (mostly in the horn line) are carrying bags as "Vagabonds" and that is how the color guard does equipment changes.
@@skeletizer I've not noticed them either but I think they use them for rifles and sabres. I know they have some stuff staged on the front sideline too
As an SCV alum, I'm biased...but jeez. Wow. I always see them this time of the year (there were 2 shows at this venue--Walnut, CA--I caught the 2nd one), and I don't remember them ever being this clean. (Apple to apples--I'm talking about warm ups, not on the field.) I think the snares and tenors are one of, if not THE best that Rennick has had at SCV. Especially the tenor line. I have the same concern about them peaking too soon. I also worry that they're ranked 8th in DCI right now, and the overall corps won't rank high enough for them to win drums (if that doesn't improve). But still--I'd rather have them playing this well than not :) Thanks guys! P.S. FYI--Paul and Sandy Rennick were both inducted into the SCV Hall Of Fame this past weekend...joining Fred Sanford and Ralph Hardimon (among other great SCV drum staff over the years).
Rennick won the Sanford with Phantom in 2010 when the corps placed 6th at finals. I think they'll move up as a corps when not going on first at every show.
love your guys' content - thank you! I was at the shows in Walnut & San Bernadino... (just off to the right by the golf carts in this one) -- SCV was straight thunder right outta the gate...every bit as good & tight as BD. SCV cyms are especially good this year! It was a heavenly opening weekend...
I love that Rennick keeps the unison impacts in the players’ back pocket until the last possible moment. There’s almost a symbiotic relationship between drum 4 on quads & bass 5. I love those hammered beats without “giving it all up” unnecessarily, it comes across with a totally unique quality.
hell yeah. some thoughts: a) i really missed vanguard, so stoked they're back. this crew is playing really well, and i have them more or less neck-and-neck w BAC for the sanford (just going off batteries...havne't heard any FEs yet). b) SCV's bassline this year, i think, seems to me the weakest link (by a hair) at this point? some of those gnarlier rhythms are a bit difficult to read c) snare vis at 12:49ish is so slick--the vis of the summer for me d) that lick at 13:03ish seems like the 2nd half of a book report? e) drums look super fresh, part of me wishes the unis + hardware were evergreen.... f) sparkling water is the #powermove
Oh boy, this is going to be a wild year, not just for the Sanford, but top 3-5 Corps over all. Kudos for SCV going with no props. Marry that with Rennick's No F's Given book, this is a "We're Back" statement for the ages.
Drumline is cranking same with Front ensemble. They are being pretty smart about wanting to peak at the right time but they also have that pressure of being the Vanguard percussion force. Already they sound much better since the first show. Fun fact is how much they spend on fundamentals and tracking during subs.
The question is can this line be this clean while moving as well?! The Cavaliers were DAMN CLEAN whether in the lot or on the move with show music! That’s the million dollar question leading to a Sanford this year! The Cavaliers set that standard in 2023!
@@sugarfreebrownies7265dude still trying to argue with like 20 judges in a row last year who gave cavs the highest score in percussion from dekalb to the finals night 😂😂😂

Also in person they are so loud, in my video editing the audio was always peaking so I had to tone it down and my ears are still a little tingley ...🤩 🤩 Wow
I remember rennick talking about the drums at a UNT camp, and he said something about asking dynasty to make a 10 ply shell with a single piece of wood instead of 10 individual pieces of wood, or something like that. The drums sound really good too.
Maybe that's what was meant in their unboxing post on insta, by "stave shell". They said: "Thank you Dynasty for the most wonderful drums! Complete custom finish shells and hardware, stave shells, and custom finish carriers bring the look together. #SCV2024"
I wanna say it’s because of the front ensemble, but after hearing both groups Vanguards front is just cooking ridiculously well. Maybe it’s the points of exposure are getting picked in weird spots by the judges.
Vanguard going on first then going before Academy and PC is really hurting their scores imo. I don’t think mandarins beats them overall if they go on b2b.
Saw them in the lot at dci west. Insanely clean in person. The BD book seemed a bit harder and choppier but they were dirty and the dynamics and overall feel of the BD book didn’t hold my interest like vanguards does. I hope they win drums this year!
Interesting that they are consistently scoring higher in Achievement than Content. I wonder if that has anything to do with the simultaneous demand Evan mentioned?
There are just SO many good groups this season. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like there could easily be 5+ groups who could realistically gun for the sanford this year. Lines seem to start the season cleaner and cleaner by the year nowadays. Also it's great to see another world class cymbal line back in the fold🙏
Every subsection is playing the same thing together. Like unison across the whole battery. A bunch of paradiddles into a triplet roll figure that the quads and snares play together with the basses splitting the exact same rhythms for example.
Great show, fellas! Quick question.....do you think DCI will LET Vanguard win High Drums this year? I almost wonder if they'll be slotted in 2nd place since they didn't march last year. I feel like it's BD's "turn" to win it......but I'm afraid Vanguard is muuuuuuch better! And, once again, Thanks for breaking down the music for me!!!! I absolutely LOVE watching and listening....but my goodness they're throwin' down some notes! Continued success fellas!
I truly don’t believe that judges will base a groups current status off of what they may or may not have accomplished previously. If vanguard percussion is good enough to win, they’ll win. I think that was proven last year with Cavies and with Phantom in 2010. Can it be harder if the overall corps is less successful? Definitely. But that’s also part of game.
