Here's some pieces of brella info that I don't think were mentioned in the video and don't seem to be covered in the comments. These may or may not be important. 1. Bumping someone with the splat brella shield does 30 damage, so it combos with a shot for a very fast kill. 2. You can tell when the shield is available by looking at the reticule: it's a whole circle when the shield is ready for use but the circle is broken into quarters while the shield recharges. 3. You don't need to hit with all the pellets to deal maximum damage from a brella shot. The splat brella fires enough pellets in a single shot to deal more than 81 damage, but the damage is capped against players, so hitting with any more does nothing.

brellas have the most interesting mechanics of all splatoon. I love running sub power up on brella so my ink mine tracking lasts longer, which means more assists, which means my undercover canopy will recharge/regain full health twice as often. marked players killed by teammates count as assists! no other weapons have this depth even close.
Undercover has been my main for the past 2 games, and I’m glad to hear that, instead of going off about all the bad things about the undercover, you instead give some useful tips with it and praise it for it’s good abilities. I will say that, when coming directly out of spawn, you don’t want to be having your shield up while painting unless there’s an imminent threat. You can tap-fire the undercover brella, and cover more ground while painting around the same amount, which is good for painting while getting up to the front lines to use your at best sub-par special. Mines also give good use as you can use it to track players and gain assists off of them. Undercover might actually be one of the only good weapons for point sensor/line marker as long as it has a good special to bat (something like tenta missiles). Anyway, I hope this helps for anyone looking at this comment!
important things that weren't mentioned here - tenta brella is a heavyweight while undercover is lightweight. so 10% swim speed/8.3% run speed penalty and 5% swim speed/8.3% run speed boost respectively. nothing huge, just something to keep in mind. i've heard that most tent players advise _against_ running additional AP of swim speed just so your speed matches that of the canopy a bit better also undercover's kill/assist regen mechanic; pretty self-explanatory, sets your shield back to full health if it's partially damaged or gone entirely. mines are REALLY good for activating it which distracts me from the fact that they genuinely should've just ported splashdown over would synergize really nicely with opening gambit if they ever give it the LDE treatment
undercover main here! i noticed you used your mines only like 2 times during the entire 5 minutes. USE YOUR MINES-all the time! the most important thing about the undercover brella is that you need to set up your own fights WELL in advance, by placing down mines at every opportunity you get (you don't want to have zero mines on the map at any time) because if an enemy triggers them, they now have taken damage that significantly reduces your time to kill, and marking which makes it easier for you to get max damage per shot. and as others have already mentioned, any kill or assist will fully heal the undercover's shield (bringing it back if it was broken), which means that effective use of your mines and chip damage can make you really difficult to pin down. if you don't have your mines set up properly and the enemy team gains map control, it can be very difficult to get anything done with the weapon, as it can't effectively set up its own fights with the mines anymore, and doesn't have the poking tool to make up for that.
i had a very aggressive style as a tenta brella. i barely if ever opened my canopy and basically played it as a blaster. yeah it’d be nice to have a functioning shield but if not, i’d actually give it toxic mist (so your opponents move just as slow as you can fire shots) and zipcaster (activate from safe distance, can oneshot at close quarters)
when i first played tent i was so confused about what it was supposed to do, because the weapon's kit seemed so anchor/support-like when the main weapon's range was just totally the opposite. after maining the vdapples i started playing it completely differently, just getting in their base in the most awkward of ways (with aggressive beakon placement) because what are they gonna do-get me out of there with my gigantic shield and vac? and even if they do, i'll be back in another 5 seconds anyway
The Undercover Brella. Oh god, the Undercover Brella. That weapon had such a fall from grace from its Splatoon 2 incarnation which is impressive considering it wasn't even good in that game either. Words cannot describe how baffling I find its kit to be in this game. Ink Mines are... fine, but they really hamper the Undercover because its range is already terrible, but without a throwable bomb, it legitimately can't make any forward pressure on its own, given its complete inability to poke at range. The direct hitbox does do 45 damage which does technically bring the brella itself to 2 shot range, but the far more practical indirect hitbox does just 35, failing to meaningfully change time to kill. It also just can't do much with the tracking effect, as it cannot push into enemies even if it knows exactly where they are, it's not like the Explo which can lob over walls, or the Squiffer/Nautilus which can use the tracking to more easily ambush someone. As for the Reefslider, if there ever was an actively detrimental special/main combo, this'd be it. The Undercover does not like to play that overtly aggressively, and the endlag stacks with the short delay before the canopy is opened, effectively rendering it even more vulnerable than other weapons using the special. The Reefslider's middle hitbox does do 60 damage which comboes cleanly with the weapon's 40 damage shots... but the range at which the Reefslider does 60 damage also happens to be the range the Undercover Brella starts to struggle to do max damage. There's very few situations in which the Undercover Brella benefits from its Sub or its Special. Oh also, just want to chime in and fact check. You mentioned object shredder plus bombs breaking the Undercover canopy, when that just isn't true. Despite appearances, Object Shredder actually provides no damage bonus to Brella canopies whatsoever. The true cause of the canopy instantly breaking is it has 200 HP, but lethal bombs get a 2x damage multiplier (with or without OS, it's a completely seperate mechanic) against Brella canopies, bringing the damage up from 180 to 360.
If the undercover had a with a low point wave breaker and a good bomb I think it would have a good niche as it’s self heal allows it to stay in fights for very long periods of time as long as it’s being activated. So having a special that could help proc it’s heal on assist would make it useable on smaller maps. It probably still wouldn’t be great but it would usable
I find Splat Brella fun, I picked it up as a joke before Fresh Season and actually found myself doing well with it. Maybe it's my internet, being in the UK, but I don't really get as many fake blocks as others complain about. It's just kinda strange to see people clowning on it so hard while I end up carrying quite a bit with it.
Also, the example game (10:40) is such a bad example of a good way to play Brella, as well as a bad example of handling chokes in the first place. There's no waiting for teammates or going alternate routes, just rushing the same place and hoping it works. I personally play Brella as a Quick Respawn weapon, utilising its ability to shield for teammate's defence while Super Jumping, while also putting pressue on anyone not aiming at me. This video looks at Brella with the idea that it will play like it does in Splatoon 2, but it just doesn't. Edit: Also, no special use at all. Brella does work well with its special, and it's good to have some Respawn Saver so you can use it more frequently.
The best advice I can give for this travesty of a class: If you're playing X Rank in Takoraka division and you're outside of Australia/Japan…don't even bother touching this weapon class in there. Generally the best brella latency in your favour is closer proximity and good connections. Speaking from experience, I personally have what I'd consider above average connection, playing from the UK in generally European lobbies, and I can get solid brella latency mostly everywhere but against Japanese players. If you’re playing with people on an entirely different continent halfway across the world, the netcode and connection is naturally going to be a lot worse for you, and any time shielding is going to be nightmarishly delayed. (Also avoid Splatanas, they are a brella's mortal enemy)
Brella was one of the weapons that got me really interested in playing Splatoon when it came out, sucks that Splatoon 3 (my first time playing the series) it’s at it’s lowest point.
I play Tenta from time to time and I've been firing my shield a lot to help push and skirmish. Though what I never thought of is using flanks with the shield to keep enemies away from the objective which is really smart. I'm happy you made this video so I can learn a bit more about this weapon.
I wish this weapon was buffed. I want to main it so bad since it seems like such a cool concept, it's a shotgun equipped with a shield, but not only is the shield broken and the shots are slow, weak, and inaccurate, I also just can't aim. I don't have much knowledge on the game to know what would be the perfect kit for it, but I hope it gets something good in the future.
The unfortunate reality is that, as an Undercover main in Turf War, I learned nothing from this vid. Not because Gem is a bad teacher. I actually think he's great at teaching. But since most ppl don't use this weapon, it's relatively unexplored. So I already know everything Gem said. In fact there were things that I know that he didn't mention. I wish we could get a better kit and some buffs, because I wanna main Under Cover in more competitive play so badly. Alas, tis not to be
Splatoon devs should play anarchy battles with real players. There's a lot of issues they don't seem to notice. That or they are putting out fires we don't even know about.
Something useful with a mines weapon like the undercover is against a team that has ink jet users on it, like the one Gems was facing, is if you see their launch spot, and you don't intend to camp especially so, is to put a mine on it for when the special ends if you have the moment and ink to spare, you can do the same for super jumps if you like, but you have to be a bit quicker on the uptake.
I found a way to dominate with undercover umbrella. Basically spam the crap out reefslider. Undercover umbrella can spam reefslider like no other weapon can. 1. I put the best gear to charger special/save special. 2. Tag the floor to provide ink for your team and charge special. 3. Spam reefslider into large crowds. Umbrella hates 2 on 1 battles. But reefslider loves crowds. 4. After reefslider plants two mines. Your ink recharges after special. 5. Finish any enemies with your umbrella when it is a 1 on 1 battle. Hopefully they ran into mines and are weak. Rinse and repeat. It you are doing good try to aim for 8 reefslider a match. The most I have gotten was 9 reefsliders a match. Basically nuke the place with reefslider and mine then finish off with umbrella 🌂.
If you dash forward, by swimming up to someone, and then fire and hold, you can combo it with a brella hit to kill, it allows you to shark with a brella.
it really shouldn't considering most of the full auto weapons can just submerge and emerge while shooting without any delay to ink recovery. Brella has a decently sized delay before recovering ink.
Splat brella used to be my main all the time when they FIRST dropped in splatoon2. The weapon seemed to work just FINE(?) In terms of shielding & everything back then. It wasnt until they changed its ink consumption rate that the weapon just began to feel awkward and even moreso: have the WEIRDEST interactions with its shield just outright being garbage at blocking shots for whatever reason. To this day i still have NO CLUE what they broke in that regard but its honestly so weird
As of right now, the Undercover Brella is my only white-flagged weapon, and I have no idea what that says about me as a player. Zones is easily its best competitive mode, if you were wondering what variety of happenstance facilitated your one win there.
Thank you for the weapon select videos. I watch them all and save them in my Splatoon playlist. Then if I choose one of these weapons later I can go back and watch the specifics. 😊
Finally ! I’m so glad to have waited this long. I’m a 5 star user with both the Explo & Tenta. However, I have coincided more with Tenta because I just find it much more fun to use. It’s unfortunate the current state it’s in and I hope Nintendo gives it some serious sauce soon. I would also love for the next kit to have Angle Shooter. That has so much potential to me! Also, I did not know about ninja being useful with it, but it makes sense.
if they give one of the weapons in the worst class in the game the worst subweapon in the game I will riot. angle shooter is the worst sub in the game and even if it was actually good it also has no synergy with the tenta brella.
I have two brella class ideas. 1. Meta Brella: Canopy made of metal. About the same damage and range as Tenta Brella when shooting. However it won't release a canopy like Undercover Brella, but nor does it autoshoot like Splat and Tenta. About the canopy. It can't get destroyed, no matter how much enemies ink on it like big test dummies or Marie's umbrella. The canopy itself can deal enough damage to splat an enemy when touching it like most rollers. 2. Parasile: About the same damage and range as Splat Brella. It will launch a canopy in about a second after holding. When releasing it, it will also launch a mini missile like Tri-Stringer with mini bombs and it travels fast and reach the same range as Splat Brella. When an enemy touches a canopy it will explode and deals damage of 60 or 30 if they're adjacent, otherwise it will just explode when reaching to an end. The canopy has 100 HP and consumes about 10% of full ink after releasing along with 5% from the shot. It won't explode when destroyed like torpedo. After releasing a canopy, the new one will respawn immediately, so you can launch maximum 6 times with full ink non-stop. The canopy can also explode if an enemy touches it, even though it's not launched.
They currently have some utility in Salmon Run at least, but it’s sad that they don’t work properly. I really enjoy tent, it’s fun to rally with, but not being able to trust your shield is rough. I like the flanker idea too, faking people out with the launched shield, but ink vac is only really viable if you’re protecting your team. 😢
Really hope the Brellas get something new and bug fixes. Right now it feels if you want to use the Brellas, it's best to wait for a Salmon Run rotation that has them.
Where is nintendo splatoon devs listening in tho? Can we make our voices louder on those forums or channels about the state of brella? I dont think devs even watch youtube.
The brellas actually have a unique counter to crab that is so useless I've only gotten it to work once. For some reason, when you bump into a crab it take proportional knockback for its size. I have bumped a crab off of the map one time on resort, though I have also bumped a crab off of a snipe after this once or twice, wastes a bit of time for the special if you happen to be in position to make it work, but don't go for it as a response to crab, as it will just shoot you.
I noticed that it wasn't mentioned how object damage plays into Brellas. Particularly how the prevalence of Splatanas and their absolutely bonkers object damage invalidate the use of Brellas. I wouldn't say I "main" Undercover, but I feel that it gets a lot of bad rap from people who don't understand how to play around its mines, and that Undercover is probably the best Brella simply for the fact that it's at least functional. Splat Brella was great in 2, but it's hot garbage in 3, and the same can be said for Tenta. Undercover actually got BUFFED with the change from Splashdown to Reefslider. (even if Reefslider is trash too)
I actually LOVE the undercover brella!!! I use walk speed up over swim speed up and it tripped A LOT OF DUALIES. You really have to aim carefully and play with strafing. Back up when rollers get too close but take as much shots. It's basically the "surprise @#$%" of the weapons next to the mini splattling. You can also run ppl over with the shield as the shield also can push players off if they are near hazards like water xD... A certain map with a carp ton of water is definitely its playground. But be careful as you can also get bounced back and have your shield damage in the process.
I think its quite interesting how effective the splat and Tenta brella are at countering undercover. its super easy to get max damage on undercovers large surface area, and undercovers slow kill time is often just incapable of breaking the enemy shield and player behind it.
For Gear I'd tend to reccomend a lot of Ink Saver main and a little bit of run speed across all brellas, alongside the usual one sub of certain things like bomb resist. (Tenta could also do ninja squid and enough swim speed to cancel it out.) Yes undercover can also run the QR gimmick but eeeeh.
I feel like the best comparison, in terms of League of Legends, on how to launch the tent shield would be to throw out a few and dont follow them like a Neeko w which you can do a fake out with sometimes
25:30 Object Shredder does not work on brella shields since it's part of the main weapon, Suction literally just did enough damage alone to break the shield in 2
Serious question: Would Splat Brella be overpowered if its maximum damage was increased from 81 to 100? It would be able to one shot opponents in close range if all the pellets hit them, like a Shotgun should be able to do. Anything far away should be pretty safe from the one shot, but the Brella would still deal more consistent damage with a buff like this.
2:10 i think the problem is the smae as ultra stamp. Lasg season we had a connection bug where ppl wouldn't die even if you hit them so maybe it should be the same for the brella shield too?
My current goal in Splatoon 3: Get all badges of the Brella class currently got none of them lol; it's 0/6 right now although i do have two stars on both the tenta and good ol' undercover favorite memory of undercover: it's just me bullying this inkbrush who i trapped in a corner and killed (this was turf war) and also for some reason, i'm pretty sure this is just me, but like, why does it feel like the splat brella open up slower than the tenta.. just like, why
the brella class would be more effective if you could keep it in its sleeve and just hit people with it like a club instead of trying to shoot and open its canopy
I hope they fix Brella, I never really played them in Splatoon 2 but I want to try them for the same reason I picked up chargers: they are difficult to play. But I also want to play strong weapons not weak ones so I haven't touched it yet
It really depends on your internet. I'm in Europe, where the netcode is more consistent, and in all honesty, Splat Brella is not the garbage that people call it. The key is to play around the weaknesses of the weapon, using things like Run Speed Up and Quick Respawn to avoid major losses, and at the same time, you have to know when to shield. in Splatoon 2, it was easy just to block in the middle of getting hit, but in Splatoon 3, it's better to pre-emptively block and then move to a better position. If you have any questions, do ask!
@@wurtknurte7283 i enjoy the weapon a ton so I've been playing it a bunch the past few months and I gotta disagree, it definitely is really bad. The stats really need some tuning, it needs lower points for special, etc. but I agree about the netcode. It really isnt the biggest issue with this weapon class and people are kinda scapegoating the main flaws of the weapons onto the netcode. Fix the netcode and these weapons still wont be viable.
Whenever I do see a brella player in turf war, they often cause me trouble. They are either super skilled, or I never see them on the field somehow?¿? Or they don't like to use the shield mechanic.. I like to use brushes, so maybe that's part of the reason why. Really sad how underpowered and unloved(by Nintendo) the brellas are, was very interested in the class at the start but grew into brushes instead.

Anyway, I hope this helps for anyone looking at this comment!
important things that weren't mentioned here - tenta brella is a heavyweight while undercover is lightweight. so 10% swim speed/8.3% run speed penalty and 5% swim speed/8.3% run speed boost respectively. nothing huge, just something to keep in mind. i've heard that most tent players advise _against_ running additional AP of swim speed just so your speed matches that of the canopy a bit better
also undercover's kill/assist regen mechanic; pretty self-explanatory, sets your shield back to full health if it's partially damaged or gone entirely. mines are REALLY good for activating it which distracts me from the fact that they genuinely should've just ported splashdown over
would synergize really nicely with opening gambit if they ever give it the LDE treatment
undercover main here! i noticed you used your mines only like 2 times during the entire 5 minutes.
Undercover is a fairly used weapon only because it’s bad witch is very sad
It is the ultimate meme weapon in the game.
Bad witch
Its the new meme weapon in anarchy
@@rpgnerd7610 it was always a meme weapon
I somehow found it good on Tower Control when I decided "why not?"
But that's probably because they were still S rank battles and not the S+0 / higher
THANK YOU GEM I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SINCE THE FIRST EPISODE OF WEAPON SELECT
We need our 3.0.0. Meta from splatoon 2 that had umbrella, blaster, and dualies.
Every morning you upload I always put it in my routine to watch, squid school is part of my regular school schedule now
If the undercover had a with a low point wave breaker and a good bomb I think it would have a good niche as it’s self heal allows it to stay in fights for very long periods of time as long as it’s being activated.
The sigh at the beginning really summed it up ,_,
I play Tenta from time to time and I've been firing my shield a lot to help push and skirmish.
I used to main Splat Brella but then I started playing the new Trislosher and now I don't want to go back because I'm actually consistent 😭
You went to the dark side ☂️life
The unfortunate reality is that, as an Undercover main in Turf War, I learned nothing from this vid.
Another thing to note is their atrocious ink efficiency. It shouldn't be as bad as it is.
it really shouldn't considering most of the full auto weapons can just submerge and emerge while shooting without any delay to ink recovery.
I really hope Nintendo fixes the state of brellas as it's pretty much the only weapon I use yet is just so inconsistent
Hopefully the netcode is fixed by the time tenta camo drops...
Tenta Camo with Angle Shooter & TriZooka!
I will forever remain loyal to the brella
Despite all this, we brellas still go to protect our team's superjumps.
Every. Single. Time.
(Unless they Inkstrike/Booyah bomb the jump spot, sorry I'm out)
As of right now, the Undercover Brella is my only white-flagged weapon, and I have no idea what that says about me as a player. Zones is easily its best competitive mode, if you were wondering what variety of happenstance facilitated your one win there.
Thank you for the weapon select videos. I watch them all and save them in my Splatoon playlist. Then if I choose one of these weapons later I can go back and watch the specifics. 😊
It actually happened!
welp we may as well prepare for doomsday, at this rate brellas are going to get new kits and be fixed!
1. Meta Brella:
Canopy made of metal.
2. Parasile:
About the same damage and range as Splat Brella.
I like the idea of a Boom Boom Brella.
I dont think devs even watch youtube.
it's worth noting the tenta brella can struggle to kill point blank- it's actually most effective slightly further away than point blank
(even if Reefslider is trash too)
I mean, I play Splat Brella and it seems fine.
I noticed this too. Usually ends up in both parties revolving around eachother trying to get past the shields
I want them back. Undo their consumption and damage nerfs over the course of Splat 2, honestly.
I have a feeling this video won't become outdated for at least 2 seasons
I hope it’s outdated ASAP😅
@@alfredc.7777 Same, but unfortunately I don't think Nintendo is going to suddenly give Brellas some love
26:46 Actually a 9-shot
"I can't stop the rain from fallin'.
I'm drownin' in these tears I cry." 🎵
“Probably the worst class”
I don’t think you need to be using the word “probably” there
For Gear I'd tend to reccomend a lot of Ink Saver main and a little bit of run speed across all brellas, alongside the usual one sub of certain things like bomb resist. (Tenta could also do ninja squid and enough swim speed to cancel it out.)
Yes undercover can also run the QR gimmick but eeeeh.
they screwed over brellas in every single possible way, just because they're a shooter counter
I feel like the best comparison, in terms of League of Legends, on how to launch the tent shield would be to throw out a few and dont follow them like a Neeko w which you can do a fake out with sometimes
They don't know what to do with the brellas in this game.
They will definitely get a new kit for the new season.
25:30 Object Shredder does not work on brella shields since it's part of the main weapon, Suction literally just did enough damage alone to break the shield in 2
Finally, shotgun (splat brella), super shotgun (tenta brella) and ??? shotgun (undercover brella)
Auto shotgun
Finally the brella episode is here, I played tent for most of 2s lifespan even though they don't function they're still cool weapons
On the bright side, why use toilet paper ever again? Just use brellas!
As a brella main I hope for buffs and real bug fixes in the future
2:10 i think the problem is the smae as ultra stamp.
Lasg season we had a connection bug where ppl wouldn't die even if you hit them so maybe it should be the same for the brella shield too?
It's been painful farming up the max freshness for regular Brella, Splatanas and Stringers make life miserable as have the other issues plaguing it.
FINALLY MY MAIN CLASS WEAPON (Nintendo pls buff brellas)
Why daddy Nintendo why must you make my favorite weapons so bad
I LOVE nintendo. I truly do, but only they could make a weapon where it's main fault is just "bad netcode"
Undercover umbrella? Food!
He did it!!!
Ofc they don't stop the rain it goes over them silly
I’m curious if buffing the fire rate if the shield is off/broken would help the class at all
Dudeee I've wanted this forever. Shields down would make it turn into more of a burst style shot. Like a two tap burst shotgun.
The Genius man guide
My current goal in Splatoon 3: Get all badges of the Brella class
currently got none of them lol; it's 0/6 right now
although i do have two stars on both the tenta and good ol' undercover
favorite memory of undercover: it's just me bullying this inkbrush who i trapped in a corner and killed (this was turf war)
and also for some reason, i'm pretty sure this is just me, but like, why does it feel like the splat brella open up slower than the tenta.. just like, why
Yes finally.
My main
Brella Love lets gooo ❤❤❤
the brella class would be more effective if you could keep it in its sleeve and just hit people with it like a club instead of trying to shoot and open its canopy
Brella pog
They should make brella users immune to ink storm as compensation
Honestly ink storm is the least of my concerns as a brella main
Thank you for doing timestamps for me Gem
Question, what is the death message for being splatted by being walked into by a brella? Crushed by brella?
this class seems like itd be fun if it didnt get so shafted in this game :(
I hope they fix Brella, I never really played them in Splatoon 2 but I want to try them for the same reason I picked up chargers: they are difficult to play.
Uh oh...
i played splat brella quite often back in splatoon 2, tried picking them up now but it just hurts to play. these weapons have been absolutely gutted and need to some attention
Is there any utility with drop roller on brellas?
They probably mutilated brellas so bad just so their precious crab tank could be the _only_ proper tank in the game :|
Ok, seriously when I'm up against a brella player they usually win! Why are they considered such a bad weapon? The same with bloblobber. 😢
I really like how reg brella feels to play, but it's just so... not good! It sucks. Hope they somehow get patched even if it doesn't feel like a possibility
