    The GROM-MST 4 unit with bluetooth accessory is fantastic! The sound quality is top notch and the pairing/unpairing procedure is straightforward. After pairing, I love that it connects automatically to my phone and starts playing through the speakers as soon as the stereo is turned on. This means I can jump in the car and continue listening to what was playing previously on my phone (eg. a podcast) through the car speakers without any manual intervention whatsover. This is a great tonic after having tried so many other fiddly solutions (eg. various phone to FM transmitters; phone to tape adapter; external bluetooth speaker). Also the GROM bluetooth solution is the best solution aesthetically because there are no external cables/hardware to spoil the show. Now I'll be able keep my XC90 (2005) quite a lot longer now because the lack of bluetooth was my biggest annoyance with the vehicle which otherwise suits me very well.

    You might mention, at least for my model, that it take T-25 driver to remove the screws. For Bluetooth I removed...carefully, the CD player as I never use it. Also, the box insert between the screen and the CD insert I drilled a hole that allowed both my Bluetooth mic and my USB cable (for charging). You can't see a thing, cosmetically. The distance between having a mic at the opening of the insert and a mic beside the mirror is was just a few inches. It is a monster job to run the mic cable through the glove compartment and up through linings (did it for dash cam).

      Also, I just listened to the Bluetooth for more than a few seconds. My gosh, it's just as seamless as when I used USB. Plus, I can charge my phone with the USB cable and listen to music via BT. You guys put out some really fine products. Oh, and I am a first class audiophile snob.

    My tip is that you should disconnect the car battery before starting the job. This is so you eliminate the risk of flatting your battery, which happened to me. Make sure to follow the instructions in the car handbook for disconnecting the battery. With the battery disconnected, you can still insert the key in the ignition and move the gearshift into D, giving you space to remove the radio/AC unit. It's very important to fully deploy the Parking brake to it's furthest extent before shifting into Drive otherwise the car will roll off. And remember to shift back to P and then turn the key back to "0" before reconnecting the battery.

    To securely hold the GROM unit in place, I bought a short piece of velcro (about 10cm) from a sewing shop. This holds it firmly in place upside down on the bottom of the stereo unit, beneath where the CD slot is.

    Where does the box go after installaton? In the back of the radio? Glove box? If the glove box, does that mean wires will be hanging out of radio compartment?

    • @gromaudio

    This may be a stupid question, but your video doesn't show how to close back up the stereo...is the GROM unit small enough to tuck into the back of the dash with no cords hanging out?

    • @gromaudio
      @gromaudio  6 років тому

      We recommends routing the GROM unit to the glove box for the easier accessibility. The cable is long enough to reach to the glove box.

    • @ElishaDavid
      @ElishaDavid 10 місяців тому

      The colored cables move into the glove box? Or do you have to drill a hole into the glove box from the side? I'm confused, this seems like something that is necessary to show on video. Do you have an example?@@gromaudio

    • @gromaudio
      @gromaudio  10 місяців тому

      @@ElishaDavid It depends on the vehicle. On some cars there is the space between the glove compartment and the rest of the dashboard. you can use it to lead the cables to the glove box. On other vehicles you have to drill the hole. Check one of our examples video here:
      ua-cam.com/video/aFxZGE2QCj0/v-deo.html

    Where's a good place to route the female USB cable end? Do you have a recommendation? You could drill a hole in the little pocket in the center of the head unit and route the cable through there. I'm trying to think of a place to route that cable. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!
    EDIT: I guess I could also buy the bluetooth adapter and not worry about the USB cable. I'm assuming plugging in the microphone for hands-free audio is optional (I can't tell from the pictures on the website). I have no intention of using the hands-free microphone. I could just shove the wires in the back and not have to worry about it. Thanks.

    • @gromaudio
      @gromaudio  2 роки тому

      Positioning of the USB cable is totally personal preference and the ability of the installer. You can drill the hole and add the flush mount, such as the one here:
      gromaudio.com/store/accessories/cable-c-fmusb.html
      Bluetooth is also an option. You do not have to mount the mic if you are not planning to use the phone calls portion of Bluetooth functionality. However if you do not connect Android phone to the Bluetooth phone calls, the next track buttons might not work (this is the limitation of Android technology).

  • @tomperkins5657

    So, I have had somewhat a change of mind. I am finding that it is difficult using the mic at that distance to be heard. I am now going to bite the bullet and run the mic up to my headliner. Do you have a schematic or video for anything like that? I suspect there is a generic how-to out there. Incidentally, a year later and everything works quite well.

    Hi, Thanks for the tutorial video. I'm considering ordering this unit myself, but was wondering how will the files stored on the flash drive be read. I've noticed in this video that the system still acknowledges the unit as CD1, track XX . Is there a limit to the number of "tracks" that can be read from USB ? How is the folder system handled , as one continuous playlist or ... ? What's the max amps that can be drained from the USB connector - thinking about attaching an external hard drive. Thanks !

      +Claudiu Octavian you can refer to the manual here: gromaudio.com/docs/Grom_USB_Setup.pdf There is no limit to the number of tracks that can be read from USB. The GROM unit can supply up to to 1.5 Amp of power.

    If you add the bluetooth dongle, how do you select inputs for the GROM unit? I'm thinking specifically I would have an iPod tucked away and iPhone connected via BT, but would want to easily switch between them.

    • @gromaudio
      @gromaudio  8 років тому +1

      +Jamie Liptan Bluetooth will always take over if it is active. For example if you were playing iPod (via USB), and then the phone call comes in to your iPhone (via BT), the iPod will pause. If you will start playing the music via BT streaming, it will also pause the iPod (via USB). So there is no MODE change needed to get to the Bluetooth.

    Buyer beware, if for whatever reason your vehicle isn't compatible with the MST4, GROM will not refund you outside of 30 days. Prior to purchasing, they informed me that it should work in my 2012 MINI after dealer reprogramming. Turns out they were wrong and it isn't compatible at all (my car lacks the necessary optical connections) and since it's outside of 30 days they are offering me a pathetic $80 buyback for a $280 product :(
