I love that you make sewing videos. I'm proud to say that I have sewn my own cosplay. You and Adam Savage make sewing truly part of being a maker. Great costume. Great Video. PLEASE make the staff, even if it's after DragonCon.
Making the handle section a square with spacing markers was genius! Had I been doing this, I would have wasted so much time trying to lay out a perfect grid with a fabric pencil or something
"I want to be part of the cool kids' club." Don't we all, Bill. But I could have sworn that you had a lifetime membership. Aren't you in the cool kids hall of fame?
My wife occasionally makes clothing for herself, and what she prefers to do for the pattern is to setup a projector pointed straight down at the floor. You need to do some calibration to ensure you have it plumb and that the image is scaled correctly but then you simply use a piece of chalk or such (something that will wash out) and trace the pattern directly onto the fabric. She has an ultra short throw projector now, but she started with a plain Jane cheap projector, I embedded a length of 2x4 into a 5 gallon bucket load of cement, and got a cheap harbor freight tv wall mount, the mounting pattern of course wasn't compatible with the projector so I mounted the projector to a piece of plywood then mounted the plywood to the TV mount. Tada, a projector that points straight down.
Have really enjoyed being along for the ride as the skills have developed from foam, to resin casting and molding, to 3D printing and now sewing and soft tech! Always been an inspiration. Thanks guys :)
Last year, I was invited to the Las Vegas premiere for The Marvels as a cosplay guest. I decided I would make the new Ms Marvel outfit... and taught myself this whole process as I went along. Had to rip many seams that came out wonky lol! I think I learned a lot and I'm actually remaking it right now because I cut out a lot of detail to make the suit in time. I'm loving seeing how you took on this costume, especially the stamp!! My suit has a pattern as well but I was thinking I could do a stencil
I am loving seeing you and Brit making Gale and Karlach. I'm also making them for myself and my husband! Just had a Gale weekend and got most of the robe made, just need to tackle that belt. Loved seeing your Tara too 😂😍
Yours definitely came out better than mine did. My first real sewn cosplay was the Witch King of Angmar. It came out too big but I made it work anyway. Had to patch together three different patterns to get the robe and cowl and those ridiculously long sleeves. Then I spent at least two days tattering the edges with a steak knife and a wire brush. I'll not be wearing a long black robe in Atlanta in August, thank you very much. Have fun at DragonCon and thank you for sharing with us! You guys are the best.
Looks great! And I bet it's super comfy! 😉 Your whole process totally gave me flashbacks to when I made my Wong cosplay 5 years ago, even down to the purple & red color combo! Ah good & frustrating times... 😂😂
For someone that doesnt sew you've certainly made quite a leap into it this year With t he number of hours you've put into projects requiring a sewing machine! Great work on the costume.
Now just to make some wings for Willow. Could be a fast and fun one day build with some foam. Pose her with some feathers on the ground around her and done!
I recently got into sewing for cosplay but totally cheated when it came to cutting out fabric by using my CO2 cutting laser. Blades work, but light beams are better! 😅
Please, next time you need a large print, go down to a print shop. They can do it for not very much on the blueprint machine. Usually charge by the foot. Even counting the trip it is probably faster than all that taping. Paper easier to handle too.

Thanks so much! =D
That little 3d-printed stamp for adding the diamond pattern to the sleeves worked amaaazzzinnnggg!

@@Beanedict_C Yeah, I noticed that too! These guys are so smart!
Thanks so much! =)

Nice work! I liked the idea of the magnetic clasps, they look nice and add a touch of realism. Hope Dragon Con goes well!
The clasps are a real triumph. Thanks! =D

Thank you for the kind words!

Oh that’s so fantastic! 😄
Cannot wait to see what you two look like when you're done!!!
It's gonna be epic!!
Looks great!! So cool, you & Brit are going as Gale & Karlach. I love them both!
Hurraaaay! Thank you. =)
Excellent job. Nice look with the beard and wig!
Thank you!
I appreciate the sewing video, I struggle with it. Your pointers will help for sure!
The thing that helps me the most is going slowly.

Yay for remembering that windows in the day make adequate lightboxes for lining up multisheet printouts!
It worked so well!
The de-aging of your beard was really impressive... I need some of that action! :)
I was pretty amazed at how easy it was and how well it worked.
This looks great. It being out of your comfort zone and making something cool is awesome.
Thank you!

Thanks so much Elton! Your Wong was EPIC.

I've been having a ton of fun getting more familiar with this newer sewing machine.

Always a fan of the magnets, Bill!
Heck yeah! =)
I'm looking forward to seeing you and Britt in a couple's cosplay. Have fun in Atlanta.
Thanks so much!
Cutting it close Bill! (I have zero room to talk...) Looks comfy though and love the 3D printed magnetic clasps. That's my jam!
Oh yes, this year is gonna be down the wire. =/
If you had added a layer of quilt batting and some backing fabric when doing that leather back piece the sewing would have added a lot more texture.
Oh awesome, thanks for sharing!
Great video! You guys will be amazing as Karlach and Gale! 👌🏻
But to more pressing matters. Have you given the sewing machine a name?! 👀
*gasp* No, we haven't!... YET!
Bill: Gale's a wizard right?
Me, thinking he's talking to the audience: 😊
Britt: Yeah! ❤
Britt is my DM. =)
Shout-out if you're watching this while working on your own DragonCon cosplay! #ConCrunch
Oh heck yeah! =)
What did you use in the collar to make it stand up on its own
Bill, I feel like you need a plush Tressym for this costume.
I love it! =D
Hey, I'm wanting to make one of these myself, do you have the file for the 3D printed stamp you could share? Thank you.
You missed the clasp below the belt
Yeah the split is a little far for a clasp, so I decided to omit that one.
Question about the 3D printed stamp. Did you print it in pla and what ink did you use? Just regular stamp ink?
Yes it's PLA and normal stamp ink. No idea if it will wash out, but it appears to be quite permanent.
The big question is: Are you making the underwear too? Since it was so prominently shown on the etsy listings.
I was tempted!
It is awesome.
Though in 1 of end shots the collar looks like pigtails.
Thanks so much!
don't know why but I get a sheogorath vibe from this cosplay
Gotta be all that delicious purple.
@@punishedprops yeah

Oh yeah that's an awesome idea!
Don't forget his earring. 😊
I’m making that today. 👍
“Do you wear wigs? Have you worn wigs? Will you wear wigs? When will you wear wigs?” Haha please tell me you’ve seen that LOTR interview.
Awe, sorry I missed that one.
@@punishedprops Check it out, it’s just a little prank interview between Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood.
:)
You said chuffed! I didn't know Americans say chuffed, or did you pick it up from an English friend?
I know I picked it up from Auntie Donna.
I picked it up from Wheeler Dealers. See also: "tatty" and "pants"
Yeah I picked it up from my pals across the pond.

That's a really good tip!
Thank you.
Please forgive the personal comment but, de-ageing your beard takes at least a decade off you.
Oh, I'm aware. HAHA! =)
