This is dude right here is the personification of good music. I wish every up and coming producer would follow his blueprint that all great producers follow. Take chances, keep it funky, and experiment.
This was a on the spot beat. Still sick though. Im pretty sure he prefers to be in the comforts of his home making beats privately. Still fire though. Big ups to Madlib the badkid
Has Madlib been known for his pristine audio quality in his work? Am I missing something? Please tell me what ya'll are expecting...because being a long time fan I think he tries to do the complete opposite of that lol....What are ppl on about?? I think ya'll either don't know who Madlib is...or have forgotten. Also, he's known to knockout several beats in no time without fully mixing them...that is LITERALLY his process of production loll ...Some fans drive me crazy lol 🤦🏾♂️
JahmBProducts That’s exactly it. Nobody sounds like Madlib.. you don’t need an expensive ass studio or hours of mixing just to get the sound clear or to your* standards. Plus he always flipping some rare shit y’all never heard about. Just appreciate O for what he does.
Madlib just trolled the hell out of Noisey with this. basically just jammed a lil on the drums and CDJs, didn't even make a beat. hope he made a nice buck.
So many professors on this thread lol. Madlib is the guy that continually redefines what beat making means. He is relentlessly innovative, makes music with everything he gets his hands on - taught himself to play rhodes listening to records ffs. Who are you guys? lolol
So what's his process? - Sample the drums and record to the keyboard - Make a beat from the recorded beats on the keyboard - Go to the decks with the sample on one side and the drums on the other and mix them - Mixing a few samples with the beats he made on the keyboard to make an ever changing beat - add effects/film samples/sirens Is this right haha? I'd love to know more about his production techniques
this is basically absolutely nothing like his normal process. his actual process varies quite a lot probably, but the absolute barebones is sampling from vinyl into an sp303 sampler (or at least it was some time ago)
I fux with madlib... dope to me... He just did it old school... when you're a Dj, a programmer and a musician, you find faster ways of making trax from scratch... The difference between having 20,000 tracks and the next person having 200... You spend time chopping he spends producing, recording and helping other artist...
I'd have been just as satisfied if Madlib only had one camera, a turntable and a sampler. This seemed more like a studio montage than a beat making video... Respect to the Bad Kid though.
he basically used what he always does on his stuff. He has always talked about using live drums sometimes, or a keyboard. he can make a beat with a turntable and a 303 but he likes to experiment with all sorts of tools. the keyboard is basically a synth / sampler and the cdj's are the turntable. all he was doing different from your suggestion is jamming live on drums to make the original beat
I know Madlib likes to use a variety of equipment, and has mad flavor with live instrumentation. I just feel like despite all of the flashy equipment and videography, he would've made something better with a simpler set-up. I also feel the use of 1 or 2 camera angles makes for a more personal video than 10. It all just seemed very orchestrated. The focal point should be Madlib and the beat, not Vice's overproduction. To each their own though, I guess I was just a little disappointed with the outcome.
yes horrible acoustics, feels like I'm only listening to flutter echos and resonance modes of the room, how is one supposed to nod the head to that?? The visual setting is also complete contradiction to the feel, vibe and grainy quality of Madlibs music.. big fail
stickanimator469 Cllctr ***** Im not complaining about the actual video content, it's really cool to watch but this is basically an ad for Sony's camera, which one of the selling points is the special mic. So if they were trying to sell me with this video they've failed and it's not even the mic's fault.
I feel like they did this in a warehouse to get cool shots on a camera, but didn't put any soundproofing so the recording of the drums is just absolute shit. I have no clue why they did that.
I need black thought and madlib to collaborate 2021 full length LP. Madthought the instrumental soundscapes and samples with thoughts ridiculous vocab and flow!
there wasn't any mad skill! tell me one part that you could call MAD skill. all those flashy light and expensive tools for that boring beat and awe full mixing? off
Blows my mind how comfortable he is around the gear. Like he's in his own living room
This is dude right here is the personification of good music. I wish every up and coming producer would follow his blueprint that all great producers follow. Take chances, keep it funky, and experiment.
Dats what im doin im a music producer a lot of my beats experimental and boom bap
Besides his music contributions/credentials this man is always dressed sharp.
The dapper Don himself
I like this. Madlib is one off the best producers out there.
Madlib needs to do a 10 track project with Slick Rick
I could see that.
Ilï
Oooowwweee
Madlib has enough beats and deserves to do an album for every talented lyricist
that would be crazy
This was a on the spot beat. Still sick though. Im pretty sure he prefers to be in the comforts of his home making beats privately. Still fire though. Big ups to Madlib the badkid
Most coke-heads are! Paranoia is serious!
this man can do it all. Greatest living producer no doubt no question. Possibly the best to ever do it.
Madlib is mad talented. Funny seeing him scratch without vinyl. ;)
I have a theory that he sampled the Melvin van peebles films on to CD and then scratched on the cdj like that for his quas stuff
I'm super late to this video, but I've always wondered where he got such sick drum samples... Turns out he was just sampling himself 🤦♂️ lmao
mostly samples old drum breaks from records tho
He definitely digs for samples too tho.
LEGEND!
lmao your fuckin EVERYWHERE lol
I'm a travellin man. Moving through places space and time.
MH DOOM Yup. Seems like we have similar music tastes, big ups
charlieag1126 maybe.. My upbringing helped me have an extensive background of music.

He likes his stuff more gritty and dirty so....I mean it's authentic to him and that's why he's one of the GOATS (no sarcasm intended)

Madlib is the shit!
Got damn, Lib transcends hip hop all together
madlib is the greatest of all time.
Would love to see a cat scan or some kind of brain imaging while he is creating a beat. It would be more lit up than a Christmas tree
This was literally a DJ set and I am fine with that
Madlib is one of the best

So what's his process?
- Sample the drums and record to the keyboard
- Make a beat from the recorded beats on the keyboard
