  • As an architect, Doug is traditionally used to designing large homes, but when it came to his own house, he decided to go for something different and instead designed and built his own tiny house on wheels.

With his experience in architecture and design, Doug has been able to build an incredible tiny house, which is not only efficient in it's use of space and high performance materials but is practically designed for full time living.
    www.livingbigi...
Located in Wanaka, New Zealand this tiny house on wheels has found a truly wonderful parking spot right by the river. Hight house prices in the area have encouraged many to search out alternative living situations and the tiny house movement is now flourishing. The home's off the grid design allows it to be parked and lived in anywhere, with solar power supplying all of the homes energy needs.

Bryce, i don't think you know ( and i hope you never do, because it is clearly a great gift
you were given) how much your beautiful manner and vibe, and strong energy means,
; that you listen so attentively and with such heart, and report, contribute in an egoless manner, with joy, and then -- summarize so concisely, and appreciate, ( and please accept my accolades to your cinematographer, and, for the editing!) and when you shake the owner's hand at the end it is a serious "moment" that reverberates... Oh, I know. Our wonderful politicians are waging a war on tiny houses because they want more tax revenue. that's the major drawback for me. I would like to build a very small house, just not on wheels. In Los Angeles, the smallest I can go is 800 square feet. I'd go a little smaller if I could. When I build it, I'll use tiny house space planning techniques.

Wow, this is an honest tiny house for a single fellow. Doug's done a great job with an almost _Tardis_ like interior, particularly the kitchen space. Though the design is probably too small for my needs, it has some really great elements, the shelving idea being just one of them. I had never heard of 'aluminium breaking' so that's something I'll have to look into because I've never really thought about it as a weak point in the insulation. Thanks Doug for a job well done, and thanks again Bryce, for a great episode.

I had to look and look at this to determine that it wasn't a window of some kind...of course it is the deciding wall between the wet room and the main part of the house..but the design is seemingly simple..(though actually not ).

The real turn on is a man who can talk insulation and broken double glazed windows, sliding wall units for tables and shelves. Such a clean cut useful design. But the New Zealand park is the part of the living room that is excessively lavish and unforgettable. Thank you for interviewing so well.

👍Amazing location & view. Very nice tiny house. I like having that map on the floor & like the extra bed setup option. Not too sure about having to access the bathroom/shower/wet room from outside. I agree that having a built in ladder or steps to access the loft bed would be better. 🤔

Definitely the South Island. I live in the lower North Island- very green, but just miles and miles of farmland. Not quite the fairytale world of the lower South Island that people think of NZ as.

  • @JelenaBraum

This is probably the first tiny house I watched on this channel so far that I didn't like (open shelves in the kitchen with sports gear - too big a chance of everything smelling like onions, and high risk of spills; no shower and bathroom in the tiny house, which is all fine... until you are sick; not really working with the outside space - I wouldn't want to work looking into a wall when I have a river just outside the other window.). But I guess no house can have just admirers. The owner seems to be a very nice person, though. I wish him good luck.

I love the quote “I may live in a small house, but my windows look onto a large world.” Awesome. I also dig your youtube channel about tiny homes. Not only do you cover the building of the tiny house, you go over the cost of materials, and of the land. This is so helpful as I plan to downsize and build a tiny home someday. I live in America now and have been researching zoning laws. The rules about building an off grid tiny home varies wildly from state to state & even county to county! I have been to New Zealand before. Me & some friends river boarded from the north island to the south island, and I fell in love with the country. I may want to move there someday to build my tiny home. Looks like this guy came up with a great solution with parking his tiny home on a campground instead of buying land. $70 a week not bad!

It's what I fell in love with a decade ago, now we are emigrating from South Africa soon. There's beautiful places all over here, but the murder rate and home invasion rate is off the charts.

Thanks Geoffery. No Problem , most of my generation of white SA have or want to emigrate for safety and financial reasons. I was shot two decades ago in a hijack attempt outside my flat, came away with all my stuff and no major injuries, no real investigation from cops. It was a bump in my career, that's all, and I had a great support group. Now my concern is for my Kids. They were mugged last year, again no investigation. Not cool.
During my tour of NZ a decade ago I met South Africans pretty much wherever I went (London too) and Melbourne. I cant tell you how many times I was invited to a "braai" and people switched to Afrikaans the moment I used a South African term. I have a fairly international accent, but there are colloquialisms...
You South African? By the way, I'm not generally rude, but we all have our thresholds. Autism I know little of, I did watch the series on Netflix, the name escaped me. I'm a bit dyslexic, so written communication a bit slow and much use of spellcheck. My gran was a teacher, she did remedial work with me in school holidays after she retired, my parents would ship me down to PE from Pretoria. My youngest is challenged that way. I prefer working with challenged people, they are more real and I have patients. I was a missionary and youth pastor in my youth. All the best, I'f you are in Nz, perhaps we meet sometime? I plan to show my boy's the whole of North Island, but only South when they older in case the alpine fault ruptures. I have many SA friends in NZ, all over North Island. The kids are the main reason we leave SA. My partner and I always wanted to travel in camper, then found out about tiny houses, hence the sub to Bryce's channel.

BRYCE, I see that you are continuing to make high quality videos which are personable, friendly, informative, and enjoyable, with always really nice home owners, and in this case the architect, and in such wonderfully beautiful locations. Stay safe, well and take care. Love from Alice in SC USA.
For those of us who are more liberal - this state needs some mighty big changes in city, state and federal office holders, and our country needs (please send positive thoughts our way) a new President/VP and a new Administration, qualified Cabinet Heads, and Congress. First order of business: Put virus experts in charge, fund and support them. Then get money out of elections. There is so much that needs to be done, and I know we have plenty of qualified, ethical, principled people to fix all the damage which has been done to our country over the last 40-50 years. I personally know a large number of activists who work for justice, and they will be successful if we don't have to fight officials over universally held goals of respecting and healing our environment, ending war, ....
Sorry about all the above - after "Love ... USA." Hopefully, our citizens are learning that if they don't stand up, speak out, take action, educate themselves, vote ... democracy slowly fades and money and power- hungry tyrants fill the void.
